Yeah I just updated to the Prema v5 BIOS and I don't see a difference in terms of the fan. My main test is to open 20 tabs at the same time through Chrome...without fail it'll burst for a good 3 seconds.

Prema's v5 Bios is not released yet. That is the Stock Clevo Bios that Prema compiled with the EC.

That's weirdd. Mine does not burst when I do that. When the temperature reaches around 66, a low fan speed will kick it for mine and cool it down to low 50s.

But the fan would burst if I was using Windows 8 Metro Apps for no reason. When using desktop apps, mine is really quiet :)

They guarantee that their displays are in ISO class II, so no more than 2 dead pixels. Here's the link

Got mine from Mythlogic for a week but too busy to play with it. One problem I encountered so far is the Fn on brightness. Fn + f8 or f9 doesn't seem to work for me. My current brightness seems to be at max. Without Fn + f8 or f9 I can't adjust it, and it's too bright.

    Any suggestion guys?

^ Install control center (hotkey driver)

Check your temps while doing that.
If your cpu's heat increase a lot at that time, then fan burst is normal.

You can use Clevo's profiles in control center (performance/quiet essentially), they influence it. Also, windows (advanced) power options include a "fan profile" setting (can't remember the exact name), with which you can set the cpu cooling to active or passive.

Hey gents and I hope at least a lady,

I just took my W230ST on a long business trip and I have some great news for any long haul flyers. I was able to plug my laptop in to the power outlet on the plane and was able to game for 9 hours straight. Previously I had a Asus G73 and the power brick would trip a breaker in the power outlet. This little monster ran like a champ and the mildly attractive lady sitting to my left was even happy about the tiny blow dryer that was pointed her direction since the flight was rather cold. I liked this laptop before but after realizing I can catch up on my offline gaming while airborne, I am completely in love with it. Just wanted to share that with any of my other frequent flyer buddies out there.

I've had the same interrogations, so I took it to mysn.eu (which should be the same).
They answered that they do offer a dead-pixel warranty, which costs 100€.

Unfortunately they didn't give much more details, so I sent them yet another email to ask them how long that warranty lasts, and what dead-pixel issues it actually covers (also in regard to the link posted by verchan, which is about the dead-pixel policy... notice the emphasis, as I believe the policy is standard and included for every sale, while the warranty gets on top of that).

I might have an answer by next week.

For those interested, I had other questions for them that got answered:
    • Additional batteries can be bought for 99€ each (they're not in stock yet though)
    • The screen is Chi Mei Innolux N133HSE-EA1 (CMN 1343)
    • Un-branding is possible

There are some Chi Mei screens for around 100€ on ebay, so that warranty is ridiculously expensive.
A 30-day warranty is around 12€ by PCS, if I remember well. There's also a 1 year warranty, can't remember the price though.

Oddly I lost activation on windows 8 after flashing my bios (I think it's from booting into windows with the recovery bios running off the usb drive) so that's lame windows 8 does that, I had no idea.

It's a move away from keys that could be stolen (or moved to another system which I think is the big driver from microsoft).

My machine didn't come with windows installed on it. I have my own copy I put on with my own product key. Sort of weird that even when you do that it ties itself into the bios like that.

Yes, I think this policy mean that if you get a display with more than 2 dead pixel they will exchange it without any extra cost.
Regarding the warranty I can't find any option to choose this on the mysn page (I'm from Germany so the german mysn.de was my main focus), but I'm curious what they reply on how long that 100€ extra warranty is...

In the UK you are covered by distance selling regulations which stipulate that you have 5 working days to return the product for a full refund for any reason. Some sellers try and get around this by saying that you need to go back to the manufacture but as the contract of sale is between you and the re-seller its down to them to resolve. Not the same as a warranty but can be used as a method of getting around any DOA issues. You of course are liable for the postage back to the seller.

Really? My old bios ended with an 01 and this current one that I flashed said 05.

I'll try to take a video of it and then tweak with the power/fan settings that lastnikita mentioned.

From what I understood from their email, we have to write the "addons" we want (that are not listed already) in the " order comments".
I've simulated an order up to the payment, and I haven't seen any comments area...

EC should also say 1.00.05...that's what controls the fans.
If for some reason it doesn't just run "step1" again...

That's really very odd as if a key de-activates it usually just gives a warning message and asks for a new key.

Maybe the bios you got had a key on it?

Hello from sunny Portugal, guys! I'm in the middle of my vacation and had a few quick questions. I feel like earlier in the thread there were people with these issues but now I can't find them.

First, sometimes when I plug in a phone to charge, the USB connection comes and goes -- connected for 2 seconds, disconnected for 2, on and off over and over. It seems that some ports "work" and some don't, but then at other times all the ports seem fine.

Also, sometimes I go to use Bluetooth (for a wireless speaker, or a mouse) and the Bluetooth chipset is disabled in Device Manager. It's only one click to re-enable it, but I don't know why it's happening in the first place. Maybe it's something to do with switching between power profiles in Clevo Control Center -- I noticed that the wireless card more or less disappears (!) when I go to Power Saver mode, rather than just (for example) enabling Airplane Mode.

Anybody else run into this? Is there a fix? I have this vague notion that the two problems might have been related.

(I have the Intel 6235 card if it makes a difference)

I also had the case with bluetooth once, and my wifi is losing its connection from time to time when PC gets out of standby (limited connection)
I have to disconnect and reconnect. I have the basic realtek one for now..
I have no idea why there is a airplane mode but no way to turn off wifi via a button.
Airplane mode driver seemed to crash on win8.1 so I uninstalled it.
Maybe the BT issue occured before I uninstalled airplane mode..

I don't get it either, I went from the one that came with the PC (bought this from Sager, but I got it de-branded so it came with the Clevo BIOS) to the one on perma's blog (1.05) and like I said it acted like I just installed windows when it came up after I flashed the BIOS. Bought the PC completely OS free from them and put my own in when I installed it. (bought the PC with no hard drives either)

I'd take the silent period as a positive sign :p Usually activity means there are problems to solve

I'm pretty happy with the 05 bios: although the fanstill ramps up, it seems to me it regulates back to the "moderate-speed"-setting earlier. On the old bios this middle-speed-setting was close to nonexistant.
Playing around with undervolt with the Intel XTU right now.

I Used the package from biosmods.wordpress.com/stock/

Random note: Don't do it in the middle of the night... the monospeaker beeps throughout most of the process, it seems to be some kind of "Don't turn the notebook off" warning

Then followed this guide ( FLASHING GUIDE | Prema Mod ) til step 4 - I had to disable UEFI mode to boot from USB.
But instead of "update.bat" (which doesn't exist in the W230ST package) I typed in "step1"+return - it did some stuff and then rebooted
Then boot from the usb stick again and type in "step2"+return: Now the notebook starts to beep for the whole progress until it restarts again - done.
(incase windows is installed in UEFI mode, enable it again)

So I did the test with the "Quiet" setting vs "performance" concerning the fan and yes when on Quiet, the system's fan is in passive cooling mode and when I open up 20 tabs simultaneously the heat peaks at 78 degrees and the fans stay quiet. But if I put it in performance mode which makes the fans go into active cooling then the fans will max spike for a few seconds. I'd rather it speed up just a little bit for "longer" rather than having it go full blast for a shorter amount of time but yeah...

Do you guys know anything about the

    COPPER COOLING UPGRADE

on XoticPC website? Does anyone have a Pic of what this is?

also apparently another guy is saying you can call in and get it downgraded to a 4702MQ CPU, which seems like quite a good idea.

Performance wise its almost the same but heat wise.... its quite a bit better. What do you guys think about that?

HTWingNut, had a question for: I watched your video on undervolting with XTU and I understand that not every computer is the same, but since we have the same processor (4800MQ), I figure that some of the figures would be at least similar. However, at idle with default values and on a cooling pad with the fan turned on, my CPU core temps are 10 degrees higher than in your video, around 63C. Is there something wrong with my thermal pasting and/or heatsink? Furthermore, my computer isn't stable at even -50mV, when some of your posts indicated that -100mV is your sweet spot. What could be accounting for such a difference? Any thoughts would be much appreciated, thanks.

    Hey everyone!

I'm considering ordering one of these babies but I'm just curious about one thing.. I just got a new monitor with 2560x1440 resolution and I would hate it if the W230ST didn't support that.

According to the specs it has HDMI 1.4a and according to Wikipedia 1.4a supports 4K video. Can someone confirm that 2560x1440 works on W230ST?

    Thanks a bunch!

I think others have observed this already, but SB Cinema and the Hotkey programme now work for me with the latest Win 7 driver versions. This is one awesome laptop. My only remaining nitpicks are the fact that my trackpad doesn't work below about half way and a dead pixel (to be replaced when more stock comes in).

Depends on which monitor do you have. The monitor has to support 1.4 too. I got the asus pb278q, which supports 1.4. The u2713hm from Dell doesn't support it (u2713h does). But you can create a custom resolution. search 1440p in this thread, there is a link to a blog post on how to do it. I tried it with a 2009 model acer laptop (hdmi 1.3) with the asus and it works flawlessly. So I'm quite sure the incoming Clevo will work too.

K time to complain. So I picked up my laptop today to pack it into my sleeve to go out and study. I hear rattling inside when I lifted the computer up. I flip the laptop over and hear the rattling again. So I opened it up, took the bottom lid off, flipped the laptop upright again, and a screw fell out. I didn't care too much, so I just screwed it back in. Just to make sure, I put my screwdriver into all the other screws, and like 6 of them were only halfway tightened. (The loose screws did not include the 3 screws that secure the lid/cover to the computer, btw.

Unacceptable! Luckily I'm pretty handy at screwing, so it's alright now. But I must ask: WHY CLEVO/SAGER/XOTICPC, WHY?!
