Hey wingnut. on stock settings What temps do you get at load eg b3 with the balls propped up?

I know 90s is high generally. but my current laptop was only able to be customised with i5 in the 13 inch frame identically to w230st. I upgraded and added i7 2630qm/6630m. and goes up to 97c that high but im seeing you guys get this also with new tech so I guess part of it is cooling in the small frame.
I ask because although I could set up all this voltage. I don't wanna have to keep adjusting settings and just use it till at least prema and yourselfs come up with a solid bios mod :)

The only problem I have with using a laptop as my "main" system is that the keyboards are still proprietary, closed systems. AFAICT, there's no way for anybody to write a utility or driver that can hook into what the Fn key does. Win+arrow keys is for window control (maximize/minimize), and I have this extra modifier (Fn) *right there*, taunting me, that I can't use. :(

I installed windows 8 from 7 hoping my problem would be fixed, but it wasn't. I think I will just get a refund and go with lenovo.

Sucks that I have to do this all because of a webcam. It's pretty important and basic. I tried the fn+10 but it did nothing. Thanks for the help

Is anybody with the 7260AC having issues with it showing as 7260N in device manager and task manager.

I only have a wireless N router so I can't test actual AC performance, but I had previously bought the 7260AC card on ebay and ended up installing it in my w230. I wanted a dual band solution and thought I might as well future proof while I'm at it.

I know I specifically ordered the AC version, but I think I may have been given the N version of the 7260.

Just wondering if anyone else is having this issue or could point me towards correct drivers. I've used both intel and clevo drivers and neither seems to work.

Yeah this is what my control center looks like

    http://i.imgur.com/L6LvP4t.png

I know what you mean, it usually says webcam in the bottom row but for some reason it stopped showing and working yesterday. I kept trying the webcam driver but it always says no webcam plugged in.

I guess I just have to return it.

Anybody have any issues with the USB 3.0 ports on Windows 7. I tried to connect an external hard drive on one of them and sometimes it works, other times it asks me to reformat the drive because the drive is not initialized.

    I have read that
    1. should set the USB so it doesn't go to sleep / power saving
    2. that the USB 3 port don't supply enough power - but I'm using an external powered drive
    3. USB 3 drivers provided on the CD is not the latest drivers

    Any thoughts?

Fn like in pretty much all laptops is hard coded to the hadware. I only used Win+arrow as an example, you can configure how you like. Use Ctrl+arrows or ctrl+pgup or win+pgup or win+pgdn, whatever suits you.

Does it show up as an unknown device in device manager? And your Clevo Control panel doesn't show the camera icon, weird. It may just be unplugged. Let me see if I can find the plug location and you can at least try to plug it in or see if it's attached.

Nope! It doesn't even show up in the device manager. How on earth does a built in webcam get unplugged??? Is it even possible for me to fix it without tearing my laptop apart?

Should either be under the bottom panel or under keyboard. Just a few screws. Just which one is it is the question. I can fuss with it later, when I get a chance. Sometime in the next day or two if you can hold out.

hey guys. I've been playing with my w230st for 2 days now and I've gotta say its an amazing laptop, such a powerhouse. I underclocked cpu and using throttlestop as well as nvidiaInspector and temps are much lower but that makes me think. If I lover cpu to 3ghz or lower for some games then i won't be able to use its full potential anyway right? I'm accually considering returning my laptop and getting 4702qm instead so i dont have to play with xtu and throttlestop every time I want to play. What do you think ?

Do you think it's safe to just remove the bottom panel altogether and put a cooling pad under instead?

Flip the laptop upside down, unplug your AC cord, remove the battery, and open the bottom panel of your laptop (3 screws). In the upper left corner (assuming battery furthest away from you) on the side by the SSD, that connector is for the Webcam. See if it is attached. If not, connect it. If it is, push down on it to make sure it's engaged. If that doesn't work, if you're comfortable doing this, then very carefully (and I mean carefully) pull up on it and wiggle a little bit and disconnect it. Don't use any excessive force or you may rip out the wires. Then reseat it. If that doesn't work, then send it back.

If you look to the lower right of the connector, in teeny letters you can see "CCD" which is for the camera tech. I pulled my connector out to verify it was the right one, and sure enough my webcam didn't work. Plugged it back in and it worked fine.

The connector location is here circled in red.

Yes. Just peel it off, use a little alcohol if you need to.

So far I've found this just as effective as a cooler.

Screen is gorgeous like you guys said. I was worried about such a high dpi on a small screen but it is no problem, can see it all clearly. No dead pixels as far as I can see either, and I did not pay for dead pixel guarantee. Havent looked all that closely yet though.

Mythlogic runs benchmarks and include them, will browse through them when I have time and post the results.

Superfetch, prefetch, and scheduled defrag were all on -- I turned them off, I'm supposed to, right, for an ssd boot drive?

The Windows Experience Index result is interesting, barely higher than my 1st gen Envy 17, except the ssd. The Radeon 5850 in the envy registers 7.0, the GTX 765m registers 7.1.

BIOS has a ton of CPU tweaking options, dont know what to make of it.

Can the ball become a "ball" (i.e., are the velcros on the halves "opposite", so they can stick to one another?)

Lol no the balls can not be stuck together. also if this happened you would have ridiculously high elevation at the back plus there no Velcro on the round side of the ball to do this. also the y wouldn't be able to stick anyway. that part would be attached to the base as wingnuts picture shows. just pull away when not in use. I like that it is detachable. better than putting the laptop half hanging off the table to stop the surface obscuring the cool air LOL

Congrats! I know it's too thick for you but hope you enjoy it anyhow. ;)

Superfetch and prefetch are at your discretion. Scheduled defrag is always on but shouldn't be activated for SSD at all. Click on configure schedule and select disks and only HDD's will show up. You can see when I choose "select disks" I have nothing showing up because I only have SSD's installed.

Yes please photos of BIOS screens. Most interested to know if it has CPU voltage control and if Intel GPU can run full speed on battery.

Usually such foam is used keep away mechanical HDDs away from the chassis. HDDs vibrate, and directly touching other parts / the chassis might amplify the sound, up to having the chassis being like a bass-box.
If the hdd sits tight and you dont hear your HDD too much, you should be fine

The foam on the bracket is to help keep the SSD or HDD snug to the bottom panel.

I am not sure what the other separate foam pieces are for.

Taking off that paper isn't going to do anything. It isn't enough of an insulator and doesn't cover enough of the pipes to make them warmer. Besides, 99% of the heat is dissipated from the fan blowing air over the heat sink fins. You can take it off but you won't notice a difference.

The BIOS seems to only support two drive RAID 0 or RAID 1. It can be msata + msata or msata + sata.

Otherwise you can do a RAID 5 from within Windows. It will just consume CPU resources and you will not be able to boot off the RAID 5 array anyhow.

I have a 4702. I haven't run The Very Most Demanding Games yet, I don't think, but everything seems fine performance-wise. I ran Hydrophobia -- a few years old, but very demanding for the physics effects -- and it was smooth as butter at full resolution. I tried XTU once or twice but I'm not sure the hassle is worth the few extra percent battery life, or the few degrees cooler temps, at least for my system.

I got mine with 4702 from Hawkforce.de, but that probably doesn't help if you're in the US. When I was shopping, I did see at least 1 US retailer that was selling a totally barebones shell, but I wasn't sure where one would buy a CPU in that case, since I don't think the Haswell chips are available in a "retail box" yet. In any event, if you have a favorite reseller, you can always email them to ask for a special order...

No, no. I meant: Can the halves be stuck together to form one ball, for easy storage? Rather than having two halves, ya know? Also, is the velcro pre-affixed to the halves? Hope you know what I mean...

Pretty sure it's a "no". What you want is one half with velcro loops and the other with velcro hooks.

It's cheaper to make them exactly the same. Both halves with velcro loops, laptop adhesive side with velcro hooks.

Unless you're telling me they are using 3M "Velcro"

You can mod them if you would like to.

    Hi,

I have been reading this forum for a while now, I bought the 4702MQ version from xnote.pl about a month ago.

Everything is fine except that Intel XTU doesn't load my profile when I reboot. Earlier on It was ok, but when I tried -110mV, after some longer gaming I got a crash and since then I can't get it to load up on startup. Now im using -90mV and it's stable.

Anyone have a solution? Manually doing it every time is very annoying :/

They both have the hook side of the velcro. They will loosely stick together but not real well. I know what you mean though. I only take it off when I throw it in my bag, but even then it fits just fine.

It should only reset after coming out of sleep mode (suspend to RAM). Hibernate does not affect it. I agree it is annoying. Prema is trying to see if he can unlock the option in the BIOS, but it may take some time to figure it all out. He's planning on getting a W230ST though which is good, then he can go full boar getting the BIOS to work.

So far some CPU things can be changed like turning hyperthreading and speedstep on or off. Voltage change may be possible, but hunting through the uncharted parts of the BIOS can be a bit daunting.

    Hi Genghis.

Can you run the wPrime tools, and test the 1024M test on flat surface(no cooler, no popping up the back), and share us the highest temp?

    Download wPrime 2.10 | PUTME
    *Run as admin.

Can you also run HWmonitor, and share us the idle result for the "package on powers" using power saver mode?

    Appreciate it.

    Thanks!

Since I'm using my laptop on a flat desk, no cooling pad, no popping up the back I thought I could share my temps with you.

    Ambient temp. 26C

    Idle gives around 60C

EDIT: I changed the pic, it wasn't accurate.

Too bad the fan starts to run at max speed when the CPU reaches 94C, hope the new bios will fix it.

When you say "package on powers", do you mean CPU Package Power? On "Power saving mode" (in the Clevo control center), it hovers right around 7W.

I downloaded wPrime, and ran 1024M on both Quiet (71c) and Performance (92c) on a flat wooden table. As far as I can tell, wPrime didn't tell me how long each took, but Performance as definitely faster -- something like 5 1/2 minutes for Performance vs about 10 for Quiet. Does that help?

ETA: For those thinking about the 4702, or just on the fence about the thermals for the W230ST generally, I'd like to point out that even though the CPU approached 92c, the fan never went to max, even on Performance, and nothing actually feels hot. I've stressed everything gaming for over an hour and at worst the housing feels "warm". I'm very happy with the heat output of my system

Thank you for sharing the results.

It gets quite hot too, so it seems.

How long was the Prime95 test?

Objective is to get the max temp of the 4702MQ.
Maybe to make it more fair(due to the bad fan profile), can you first turn the fan speed to max(FN+1), and run the test, and report the max temp you can get?

I'm in a mid of deciding whether I should change to 4702MQ or stick to my current 4700MQ.
Maybe this will help others too in making their decision.

    Thank you very much!

    Thanks man.

It hovers around 7W while the load is less than 10% or was there some other load at the time?
If it is hovering around 7W while the load is less than 10%, means that there's not much difference with my 4700MQ on idle.

92c is quite hot, but not as hot as my 4700MQ where it reached 95c on flat surface.

Like the above post, to eliminate the bad fan profile factor, can you do an FN+1 first before you run the 1024M test?

Again, thanks for sharing the results!

Hello guys, i'd like to show you my chipset cooling mod :E. This small radiator lower the temp about 10C. Before i reach 85C in intensive use, now PCH hit maximum 74-76C.

Almost ordering this one, just gotta do the wore transfer on Monday. One question, has anyone tried using external audio devices (USB) with this one? Any issues? I can live with the other problems but need my audiophile fix.

Great thread, a great read for a lazy saturday afternoon lol, much appreciated.
