Would it be possible to make a custom fan curve for this laptop?
I'm going crazy over it jumping to 100% and back to 50% all the time while gaming (you know, 75% is also a thing nowadays).
Not that it's exactly those numbers, but the fan only has a few modes, and a totally un-smooth fan curve.

    Hi.

I'd like to undeclock my W230SS 4710MQ to reduce temps.

In Intel XTU, is the only option to do this undervolting, or can I reduce something else?

I currently undervolted by -70 mV, reduced the TDP from 47W to 46W and reduced the Turbo Boost Short Power Max from 58.750 to 57.750

Do you think that is a good combination? Should I go lower? I only want to underclock just by a notch, to take off maybe 3-4 degrees, because I'd like it to max out preferably a 85 instead of 90.

You underclock by reducing multipliers. From there, it really depends on what you use your laptop for.

On mine I've undervolted by -55mv, disabled Turbo Boost entirely, then reduced multipliers to 29/29/29/29 (effectively capping me at 2.9Ghz regardless of core usage). I don't do anything seriously cpu intensive at all though (gaming is pretty much unaffected by the reduced clocks).

How did you disable Turbo Boost entirely, did you set the Turbo Max Short Power to 0? Did you also lower the TDP? If not, why not?

I would be happy with 2.9 Ghz also.

As we all know, speakers are pretty poor on this.

VLC player can boost movie audio up by 200% which makes the speakers audible.

Is there a Windows program that can boost the audio on all applications? Cheers

i think he checked "Disable Turbo" in Throttlestop: http://i.imgur.com/eOjpxj6.png but how does he get 2,9GHz then?

You can disable turbo in Windows Power Plans, Advanced Setttings, set Maximum Cpu Usage to 99%.
By default, 4 core multipliers are something like, 35 35 33 33. On Intel XTU you can set them to 29 29 29 29. Its on manual tuning menu.

I didn't know it had this feature. Thanks for the tip. I actually disabled it, and restarted the computer. It's still there, it's very persistent!

This is a bit odd, your speakers shouldn't be that quiet. Sometimes I find mine to be very quiet, and as soon as I launch the hotkey app (fn+esc) the volume significantly increases. I had a few odd issues with the sound and it came down to the hotkey drivers, eventually I found that the drivers from pro-star's website worked best for some reason, even beyond what my vendor provided. Maybe give that a go

I am having a few intermittent hardware issues. First, the sound from the headphone jack becomes very muffled. When listening to music, you can't hear lyrics at all, and the instruments sound very muddy. However, the sound from the speakers is still completely normal. This problem only goes away with a cold reboot. Second, when waking up from sleep, the computer can't connect to a wireless network unless I disable and enable the wifi adapter (Intel AC 7260). Anyone experienced these problems and have a solution?

Hello again, I wondered that the lower lid of my laptop, the part that goes on the cpu and ram has covered the holes inside with some sort of tape. why not let the air circulate well. Currently I use a cooling pad and did not notice much difference in temperature. what happens if I remove the tape that have the holes. You can find attached a picture to understand well what I mean.
    Greetings.

Letting the air move over there could reduce the airflow over another part of the board.

I had the same issue with the sound, if you search for my posts a few pages back in this thread I posted how I fixed my particular issue. Basically it was the same as you describe, I couldn't hear any vocals just instruments. What I did was uninstall the hotkey drivers then install a different version of it. That seemed to fix it. Still, it wasn't that loud so I went into the hotkey app (Fn+Esc) and under the gaming tab I changed the headphone output from gaming to direct

You can find the hotkey driver I'm referring to over here. I am not exactly sure what is causing your WiFi problem, maybe someone else can give you some pointers on that. If you got the WiFi drivers from your laptop vendors website, try uninstalling it and getting the drivers directly from Intel

The tape is there to guard against dust. If you're savvy enough to remove it, then you're savy enough to open up every couple of months and clean the dust.

If you don't live in a dusty environment, even better. I removed mine and CPU temps dropped dramatically.

Has there been any word on whether this notebook will be offered with any of the Nvidia 900M series GPU's? Specifically the 970M (that'd be the ideal choice assuming it's 55W or less, but Nvidia hasn't released any TDP numbers for it to my knowledge).

No word yet, the 970m would be a significant increase in both power usage and pcb complexity (128 bit gddr5 to 192bit gddr5) so it would basically be a new machine.

I been doing some research and with little to no effort came across this laptop. So far it looks exactly like what I am looking for.
I am looking for a portable gaming laptop at a fair price.

I have some questions and some concerns so i figured since this is the Owners Lounge why not ask here; however if it does not belong here I am sorry as I am writing this post without reading the forum rules ahead of time....

Does the Sager NP7338 have an IPS display?
Would you guys recommend buying this even now that it is ~7 months old? or wait till the next iteration as I do not know how often Clevo/Sager comes out with new models, only recently been looking at this brand, but is it possible they will be releasing a new 13-14" laptop anytime soon? I would hate to purchase only to find out a new one is on its way.

Finally, a more generalized question unrelated to the laptop itself but does anyone know how the 860m holds up to DAYZ pref 1080p high settings?

    Yes
Probably. The build quality is quite bad at some points, and some screens suffer from a yellow-ish tinting.
Then again, it gives you quite a lot of power for your money.
You might want too look into the Lenovo Y50. It's slimmer, but it is 15.6", so it's just what you prefer.
There hasn't been any word on the lower end maxwell cards in the 900 series AFAIK, and seeing that the 860M is already maxwell there won't be a huge leap in performance.
It's all about what you prefer. If you really want that laptop now, get it and you won't regret it.
If you don't really need it, you might wanna wait out and see what nvidia has up it's sleeve :)

Well, the cooling system of this chassis was originally specced for the GTX 765M which had a TDP of 65W, users have been able to OC that GPU well in to the 75W range without temperatures breaching 85 degrees so I think it is very possible that a refresh of this machine will feature with the 970M which I suspect will have a TDP of 75W. I mean, the Gigabyte P34 is getting a refresh (in the form of the P34W) with the 970M and that machine has roughly the same cooling capacity as the W230SS.

You would need more PCB space for the GDDR5 too and a larger power brick.

Hi, I am having a really annoying issue, with 8.1, where my screen is just going blank for five seconds, when I assume the HD4000 crashes and then recovers. This happens randomly, from twice in 5 minutes to once in a few hours. It never happens when gaming, when the Nvidia is in charge.

Only in about one in 30 times do I actually get the balloon telling me it has crashed and recovered. I have tried looking in Event Viewer but all I see is ifgx crashed, 0x80000000000000

I have my machine set up with the laptop display off, and the HDMI connected to a 42" LG TV running XBMC and the VGA connected to an 24" LG IPS LCD on my desk. This is in extended mode. I assume this is a driver issue as in clone mode the thing doesn't even work properly without tearing in XBMC, which is a known issue with these HD4000 drivers.

If anyone has an idea in which direction I can go from here to solve this, let me know. I am running the latest drivers, and don't think reinstalling will do anything.

    Don't think, do.
    Try that first.
Have you installed the PREMA bios? Something might've gone wrong there that causes the crashes. You could try a reflash.

Remove the Intel drivers and nvidia drivers and put the latest intel wet on followed by the latest nvidia set.

The Intel always powers the display and is doing some work even if it's farming the 3D rendering to the nvidia GPU.

Hi guys, I really need urgent help here! My machine was working fine yesterday, but when I tried to boot today, instead of getting the prema mod logo like I usually do (along with the CPU information, enumeration of USB devices and hard disks), now I just get the information (without the prema mod graphic) and the system refuses to boot! I have work due today so it would be great if someone could help. If it matters, the UEFI boot is not set to windows 8.1, but set to others (that's why it doesn't boot windows immediately). Of course, I can't change it now...

EDIT: Never mind, figured it out. this happens when you boot the machine plugged into a VGA monitor that isn't powered... that was a scare!

It refuses to boot or just never gives a display? VGA simply detects a plugged in cable rather than if the monitor is on since it's an analogue spec.

Hey everyone. I just picked up a Sager NP7338 and have a question. My previous Sager (NP8130) had a design flaw that caused scratches to develop on the screen bezel just below the LCD because the bezel would touch the casing when the laptop was closed. Has anyone with NP7338 experienced the same type of scratches on their bezel? I haven't taken the protective film off yet and wanted to wait in case people are getting scratches.

    Thanks

Is anyone else encountering issues with sound? I had terrible problems and audio in general was very unreliable (sometimes speakers didn't work, sometimes the headphone jack was ignored).

Fllowing jinsirius's method, I uninstalled all the sound drivers (via hd audio driver/sb cinema/hotkey). I did a complete shut down using shutdown -s -t 0 (in the CMD). Then, I installed the audio driver first, followed by sb cinema and finally hotkey, peforming a complete shutdown after each installation.

It seemed to work- however today I woke my laptop up from sleep and no sound would play though the laptop (even though the 3.5mm jack was empty).

    Any ideas?

I just picked up my NP7338 and while I haven't been experiencing the exact issues that you mention I did have once or twice where the speakers outputted a few bursts of static noise. The kind that you might get if you were talking on the phone and the other person brushed their speaker a couple of times.

It hasn't appeared more than twice so I'm waiting to see if it's going to come back.

Can I make a suggestion to the moderators/forum managers?

So I've noticed that this thread alone has 243 pages of posts and the laptop isn't that old. It makes it awfully difficult to wade through posts (yes I know about searching). It would be much better if W230SS/Sager NP7338 was a subcategory and under it were several other categories or even just threads. The benefit is that I can skip the discussion about spray painting your NP7338 pink and get to the thread about X... When everything is crammed into a single thread and I want to read the discussion on X I have to wade through the Pink notebook questions. Does that make sense?

Anyone else having issues with the sound output not being reset back to the speakers when you pull the plug on the headphones? I've had to manually set the default to the built in speakers a couple of times after I removed my headphones. I'll troubleshoot it but I thought I'd see if this is an issue others are having. Hi Rlandor,

I was just wondering if you had any more success with this graphics patch under OSX? Thanks to the help of RehabMan and Scramject over on TonyMacx86
I have a near enough fully functioning system. Power management, battery reporting, sound, networking, everything is good.

I used your guide to get full res QE/CI and so far it is the only method I have tried that works well. However, I still have an Issue where it will fall back to a grey screen sometimes when restarting, but also when changing resolutions from the system settings. Here are a couple of videos that illustrate the issue:

    Not Booting
    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9t...ew?usp=sharing

    Changing Resolution

Are you experiencing anything like this? What did you set your DVMT to? I set 128 / 128 / MAX, but different combinations don't seem to fix the problem. I did wonder whether this might be a solution, but so far no joy.

Its probably worth mentioning, that unlike what you mention in your post I get no artifacting or graphical glitches whatsoever, so I'm wondering whether I should just count my blessings stick with what I've got.....

Someone on this thread confirmed that even the W230SS with a LED TN panel still experiences a lot of backlight bleed. Is this actually true? I was always under the assumption that backlight bleed was mostly a problem found only on IPS displays?

Can anyone here who owns a W230SS with a non-IPS display confirm/deny this? Thank you.

I can at least say back light bleed occurs in both TN and IPS.

So, what was the fix for the headphone sound issue again? It's really getting annoying to have to reboot my system every time I plug in headphones because sound just stops working altogether...

Headphone issues? What's wrong? I can plug in mine just fine and it works... Or am I missing something?

install all the drivers in the correct order and it works!

just search through this thread and you will find the solution. unfortunately I am unable to locate the exact post, otherwise would have linked it up here.

I'd rather stay out of the bloatware region, thank you ;)
It worked after I simply downloaded the audio driver from here.

The hotkey isn't what I would consider bloatware. It is a useful utility.

Indeed. 'Bloatware' is the crap that the other OEMs insist on installing on their machines, especially Samsung (I owned a Samsung notebook that I shared with my sister before this). Samsung literally filled the 500GB hard drive with useless bloatware like Smart Connect, Fast Start, CyberCam something, and the Office Trial. Even the backup image had all the bloatware in it. Typical Samsung (just need to look at their phones; my sister's GS5 was advertised with 16 GB storage space but barely 7 was usable - HTC FTW). I cleaned out the entire hard drive (also got rid of the useless Recovery partition) and reinstalled Windows from scratch. Regained some 100GB or so.

On the other hand, when I got my Clevo, there were barely 5 programs installed, excluding the front-end programmes for the various device drivers, such as Nvidia Control Panel. The Control Centre is very useful, and I certainly wouldn't classify it as bloatware.

Right guys. For some reason, PremaMod is showing that my dGPU is 'Not Present' in the dGPU menu in the BIOS. The drivers don't load in Windows either. I've tried re-flashing the BIOS a couple of times, to no avail.

This happened all of a sudden; I booted to Windows and all my games started running at 10 FPS. Upon further investigation, I found the above. Any ideas?

I had a similar problem (games didn't use dGPU, only iGPU).
What fixed it for me is:
    > Remove all graphics drivers (intel and nvidia)
    > Install Intel GPU driver
    > Install Nvidia GPU driver
    In that order.
It probably won't work for you as it doesn't even show up in the bios, but it's worth a shot.
I didn't look in the bios if my dGPU was recognized, but it was in device manager so I would assume it was.

That's odd, did you try switching back to the original vendor BIOS then back to PREMA?
