sure you can but you'll pay double. single retail CPUs are expensive (can only speak for Germany where i live) - and you'll have to search for somebody to buy your old i5 :-D I did this with my P170EM - my i5 did not give me much money on Ebay even it was only a couple of months old :-(
I think the CPU is the last thing to spare your money because of a low budget. I would start with i7 and on the other hand take a smaller SSD because their prices will drop a lot faster.

GPU is the last thing to spare really since if you thought CPUs were expensive... That's if it is removable. But yes if you can get it now it makes sense.

It is something that Clevo has available, costs extra to enable and just a chip to install. If you bought from a Sager reseller, Sager doesn't enable this feature in their systems when buying them from Clevo. For Clevo builders it'd be something listed on their configuration page to select to include as it does cost extra as indicated above.

Just pulled the trigger on a W230SS with a 4710MQ

Been traveling alot more for work and since I cant use ny work laptop for personal stuff, I have to lug around 2 laptops (tablets just dont do it for me)...need something more portable than my Asus 15.6" N550JA and this little Clevo should do the trick....Will transplant the 256GB SSD and 16GB of memory from the Asus once she gets here...

Do all models of the W230SS show backlight bleed? Even the non-IPS screens?

It should be different on every single laptop. Some might have none at all, some might have it terribly.
It's notorious for having backlight bleed though, so the chances that your laptop has it are larger AFAIK.

I am about to flash PREMA's BIOS to play around with GPU overclocking and CPU undervolt. What's the best tool to overclock GPU? Perhaps there's some kind of guide on how to overclock gtx850/860? Thanks in advance!

Nvidia control center or whatever it's called. Just use first party software (Actually don't even know if it's possible, always used AMD CCC until my lappy arrives). If not, MSI afterburner is a good tool.

I recently got this laptop and everything about the specs seem great. My only concern is that I find the keyboard to be pretty warm while multi-tasking and of course while gaming. For most laptops I've owned, including an ideapad y470p, the keyboard usually doesn't feel so warm until after a few months due to the thermal paste wearing out.

Is this normal? For context, I did get the standard paste and the hdd, both of which might contribute to the extra heat.
I'm going to do a repaste today with better quality thermal paste and see if it helps. Also watching for deals on ssds.

You do not want OV, these are so damn hot anyway. I have undervolted CPU 40mV and GPU is at stock voltage. GPU is OC'ed +200/+130 and it's fast. While gaming the temps are for GPU @86'C and CPU @90'C. And all re-paste tricks done.

Normal, the half the GPU GDDR5 chips are directly under the keyboard, those can get hot with use.

Yeah my W230SS runs pretty hot as well. I suppose it's because of the poor factory paste application and hot SSD (60-70C). My temps are 80C for GPU and 84C for 4710mq after hour of BF3. I am surprised that some people owning W230SS report temps 10-12C less than mine. Don't know why there's such a difference. :(
But I will try to OV anyway, just out of curiosity. Want to see how temps gonna change.

Differences arise from different calibration of the silicon sensors inside the chips, chip quality, heatsink/fan construction, ambient temperatures/conditions and paste jobs.

I got myself a W230SS from MySN UK. Love the laptop so far, but I worry a bit about the battery. All my previous laptops had a built-in battery, as this one does not what do you recommend doing? Keeping the bat on or off when used through the power plug?
BTW I have the laptop for two weeks and my "wear level" based on HWInfo is already 2%! I run the laptop dried 2 times and had to charge from around 9% before.

Hey everyone, stopping in to get some feedback while I read through the discussion here. I"m in the market for a 13-14" laptop ( have a thread open ) And narrowed it down to 2 laptops, and having a hard time deciding which to grab.

I'm coming from an M11x R2 so regardless it will be an upgrade.

My 2 contestants are the Clevo W230SS and the P34Gv2

Right now I'm kind of leaning towards the P34Gv2 due to the dual fans as I feel that might be better for cooling, however knowing clevo, there may be something good as well. I've owned several clevo's in the past dating all the way back to early 99, the last I owned was the 9750 released in 2005, which lasted me until almost 2010.

Curious to hear from some of the owners on their experiences, how well games play, and most of all heat and throttling issues I hear about, whether that was something seen in the early release stages or if its something that can be avoided or just overhyped. Appreciate any feedback.

I have just ordered a W230SS from Eurocom, Canada. It will be shipped to INDIA soon, where it will be used for the rest of its life.

The only issues which I am worried about is heating. The ambient temperature in INDIA can be as high as 50+ deg C plus lot of humidity!

Whilst, everyone is interested in overclocking, I would rather undercclock. Can anyone guide as to how to go about it, and how much cooler can things be run by underclocking?

    TIA for your valuable inputs.....

A good idea would be downloading Prema's bios mod .
You don't need to underclock per se, just lower the voltages until it's just stable (most people seem to get to about 70mV).
If you clock your chip lower you might be able to get even lower voltages, but it's the silicon lottery as always.

I'm looking at possible pickup up a W230SS and was wondering about the power supple. I do fly internationally a few times a year so I would like to be able to use the outlets on the plane, which usually only supply ~75W max before they shut off. I'd mainly be watching movies. Is it possible to to safely use a smaller power adapter for flying and if so, do you have any suggestions?

hi all! So I get mine. I bought it from notebookguru. This is a German seller very good for me in Europe. Very happy with my shop all went well quick delivery etc. I get the following configuration: I7 4810m , 16Gb ram. W7 and Sandisk ssd installed by me no problem.I Doing some test now with XTU and I have some question.
With entertainment mode selected in Clevo CC the cpu frequency never rise over 3.49 Ghz during xtu stress test
With Performance mode selected in Clevo CC the cpu frequency never rise over 3.39 Ghz during xtu stress test
Once said that I have very good temp. as it never rise up more than 80 Celsius even during stress test the questions are:
Why higher frequency in entertainment mode than performance mode?
And why with no temperature limitation the cpu frequency never rise to the nominal 3.6 Ghz (4 core active)? What is limiting the cpu?
    Any suggestion?

    Hey guys,

This is my first post. This thread is nuts, i think it needs to be broken down and have its own page.. I can't go through all 188 pages to get some info. Anyways, I've been searching the web for like a month now on a new gaming laptop, and this seems to be the best bet in terms of performance and price.
I'll be purchasing from ReflexNotebook, since I live in Toronto Canada.
This is what I got configured:
    Clevo specs.png
Any thoughts/concerns/comments/advice on my configuration would be great!

    Thanks!

Hello, I have calibrated the LCD of my W230SS and posted the calibrated color profiles on my blog,
Check it out here : Calibrated color profiles for W230SS | manatails' blog
It will give you much more accurate&natural colors on your screen

If you think your W230SS has a tint, you've got to check it out!

Figured I"d revise this since its been a few pages, and may have been missed. For those that ordered/own the w230SS, what were the selling points that allowed you to confidently make your purchase? That + what about this won you over the competition ( i.e P34Gv2) ? I'm on the fence between the 2 and having a hard time deciding.

Dual band means that it has both 2.4 and 5 GHz.
I now realise I might've come across as a bit of a [...] in my previous answer. Sorry if that's the case.

The reason I went for the W230SS was its price mainly. It's much cheaper than any laptop with a GPU this powerful currently out in the Netherlands. I also could've gone for the 15.6" version of this laptop but it's thicker (seriously, why?) and more expensive, and has a rounded glossy aesthetic, which I didn't like. In terms of this vs P34G v2, this laptop mainly has the price going for it. The P34G is slimmer and better looking, but also quite a bit more expensive...

My points are pretty much the same as renshuizer's. I had around 1000eur as a budget for a new laptop and W230SS from the local Danish Clevo reseller turned out to be by far cheaper than any other similar performance laptop. I had an opportunity to buy a second hand 17.3" Clevo with gtx780m for the same cost as new W230SS, but decided not to due to the size and heaviness. Plus its design looked really ugly IMO.
I really like W230SS. The only minor complaint is yellowish display and few back light bleeding spots.

Thank you so much for the feedback. As for the yellowish display, is this a common issue w/ the displays, or something that comes up due to QA issues prior to shipping such as bad lemons etc? This is a big concern.
