did it boot with 1.5v for you? I have tried 2x8gb 1.5v in my w230ss, but it's unstable in Windows.

Mine did nothing at all. Only keyboard backlight was on. Screen was black. Same behavior without any RAM. Is this normal? I had expected a BIOS error beep code without any RAMs connected.. Also fan is not spinning.

I'm having a very small issue with my W230SS. Whenever I boot into Windows 8.1 the screen backlight goes up to 100% and the Keyboard backlight turns on regardless of whether it was on before. This always happens a short time after the boot finishes. Has anyone else had this happen and come up with a solution?

Hi, If people aren't happy with the intel ac 7260 wifi card, avadirect has a bunch of other wifi cards available for the w230ss. Including the intel ultimate n 6300 which I always heard worked very well. Just thought you would want to know!

True, and if portability is a concern, you could get a dedicated numeric keypad rather than a full keyboard, which connects via bluetooth or USB (for example, this one or this one).

Saw this tool on another thread and recalled several posts here asking about calibration. If the windows calibration utility doesn't do enough for you, and accuracy is very important for you, then you might want to invest in this Datacolor Spyder4Pro S4P100 Colorimeter for display calibration. For $149 it sounds like a nice little tool, particularly if you're into photoshop / media production in a big way.

Just thought it worth a mention.

Same. It goes up to 90C during BF3 online sessions. I think temps could have been a little bit lower if not SSD that runs very hot as well.

Looked at that a little while back - appeared to be no significant difference in terms of temps (either for the SSD or the GPU/CPU).

The one closer to the touchpad works much better for me in terms of temperature. m500 runs around 5C cooler in that slot.

    Hi guys!

Just received my NP7338 in the mail. Specs: 4810, 256gb EVO SSD (I don't really need much storage, can always expand if I need to), 8 gigs ram.

Anyways, running 8.1 and I was wondering if you guys had any tips on what I should do before anything else (besides default windows updates). Keep in mind I'm new to windows since I was running a mac the past 5 years, so any driver recommendations, must have apps/programs, etc would be great.

Also, the trackpad is really my main disappointment with this thing so far. I heard it was bad but I didn't think it would be THIS bad. Maybe I'll get used to it though. Any recs on if/how I can improve this? Thanks in advance everyone

Does anyone know if there are RAID drivers for windows 7?
The windows 7 installation doesn't pick up my drives when they are in RAID.
I was not able to get it to detect the drives even when I tried to load drivers off the driver CD.

There are settings in the Control Panel for your mouse... you can try there.

For the most part, though, I'd be using an external mouse.

Hey guys! I finally decided to upgrade my old, trusty gaming laptop from 2010, an ASUS G51JX with cpu upgrades. That brick overheated like nothing else I've ever seen before, due to the CPU upgrade. I always had a cooling pad under it but under video transcoding and 100% cpu usage, I was always hovering around the 80-90 degree C mark. I loved the 1080p screen on that laptop, even though it was glossy.

I bought this laptop due to portability and the 4k screen. I really wanted to try out 4k. However, I do have some regrets for this laptop. Especially the 4k screen which I will elaborate right now. The 4k panel is the pentile type.... and I did not do my research before buying the laptop. It was kind of an impulse buy.... I needed it for the raw cpu and gpu horsepower in a small package. At the max resolution, 3800 x 1800, the screen is sharp. But, when you look closely, the lines aren't straight, but more like one pixel on top of each other alternating. I will post pictures if you guys are interested. Second drawback about this UHD screen is the DPI scaling issue with Windows 8. Some programs work fine, but one particular program I used did not scale at all, and I had to put DPI scaling back to 100%, which caused all text to be very very tiny. Currently, I am using this screen at 1920 x 1080 and occasionally at 1600 x 900.

This screen is great when I am doing video/picture editing. The amount of space I've gained is so helpful when looking through hundreds of pics side by side. However, if I were to buy another one of these laptops, I would stick with the 1080p matte screen or maybe try the 1440p screen next. Unless there is a non-pentile 4k screen AND windows fixes the DPI scaling, I will be hesitant to recommend a 4k screen on a 13.3" platform.

    Some tidbits:
Keyboard is rather shallow. I'm used to mechanical keyboards on my desktop and I felt the difference immediately.
Power button is funky, sometimes I have to press hard on it to work, or press on it longer than a "press"
USB port placements are really awkward on the right side.
One really big disadvantage of this laptop is the missing displayport port.
    LCD casing is very flexible.
Only one fan for both cpu and gpu. Not an issue yet...
A little thick, but definitely more portable than my old Asus laptop.

    Some likes:
    I love the keyboard backlighting
1 SATA AND 2 MSATA PORTS. AMAZING
4th gen i7! This is faster than my desktop's Xenon x5650 and my old i7-920xm I put in my old asus.
    Maxwell GPU!
Inclusion of num "pad" in keyboard via function keys

Yep, I've been warning people in here about the "4k" screen for a while. You can buy a 1080p panel to replace it for about $100. You can probably sell the 4k panel for ~$200+ as well.

HDMI 1.4 (which most GPUs and monitors have) can't handle 4K at anything higher than 30 Hz. There are a couple of monitors that use dual link HDMI (two HDMI cables) to manage it, but I wouldn't suggest it.

There are some HDMI 2.0 4K monitors, like the Asus PQ321Q.

Nvidia also have 4k with limited colour bands working on earlier versions.

Of course optimus solutions rely on the Intel chip which can't output 4k at all.

Would anyone be willing to do a gaming benchmark with hyperthreading and turbo boost disabled and show the results? I'm specifically looking for temperature info, as my w110er with hyperthreading and turbo boost disabled dropped temps at least 10c.

Is anyone using the Intel 7260AC and having bluetooth issues with the play/pause functionality?
Seems like it is only picking up previous/next, while play/pause does not work.

Like this? How Has Nvidia Managed to Push 60Hz 4K Over HDMI 1.4?

Man with 4K moving along fairly rapidly, 4K support can't happen soon enough.

Will the Intel 7260 AC wireless card disable the onboard module? Or is it possible to keep both functional?

The reason why I ask is I'm considering installing MotionInJoy for PS3 controller support. It "writes" over the bluetooth driver however. So if I can use MotionInJoy with the one card and keep the other card for regular bluetooth, it would be great.

I just googled it. Looks ok. Not sure about bluetooth support. Xbox One on PC has no wireless option either at the moment.

For now, I'll just stick to the good old keyboard and mouse, wireless of course, so I can have the NP7338 attached to the TV via HDMI and I can sit on the couch. :)

I am also looking at purchasing a DS4 controller specifically to use with this laptop. To play Dark Souls and also any racing/fighting type games plus other games that are bad console ports.

With the software, they seem to have gotten nearly everything working - rumble, bluetooth, etc:
