Is the vapor chamber upgrade worth it if I don't really plan on overclocking?

It's not necessary but will help with temperatures/noise.

I broke down and preordered from XOTICPC. I'm hoping that I will notice a performance boost in encoding/rendering with the 2 extra cores of the 8700k compared to the 4 cores of the 6700k in the P870DM-G. I have a couple of 1TB Samsung 960 pro drives showing up this week to put in, whenever the laptop actually ships, so that will give a bit more of a boost compared to the 950 pros that I currently have installed in the DM-G. Damn the upgrade bug...

its a big shame theres no m.2 optane SSDs thats decent for laptop.
i was thinking of putting 900p in slave GPU location and direct 12v from the slave GPU power cable, wonder how that would work.

I want to purchase a new laptop, there are 3 on the table:
    - HP Omen X 120 Hz 25 ms 7820HK GTX 1080
    - ASUS G703VI 144 Hz 7 ms 7700HQ GTX 1080
    - P870TM 120 Hz 5 ms(?) 8700K GTX 1080 SLI

Does the P870TM have better quality than the P775DM3-G? I owned a P775DM3-G and it was horrible. Sofware wise the vga was bugged and in RoTTR DX12 it had a graphical glitch (no problem with my desktop system) and in the inside even worse. The contact of the heatspreader had the quality of a cheap Chinese laptop, it was full of scratches and pits and not 100% smooth/flat. The contact on the GPU was so bad even the best paste dried out in 1-2 weeks of heavy usage. Not to mention that after a few repasted, the cheap quality screws literally broke when I tightened them and I had to deal with the huge problem of somehow getting out the other half ...

The ASUS has a better screen(144 hz) but the Clevo has 6 core cpu...if I go with the Clevo, I need to go all in with an SLI system, because 1440p would be too much for a single GTX1080 in some occasions. However I am concerned about quality. Did it improve or it varies by reseller?

The Asus 144Hz screen is only FHD (1920x1080). You could put that in any system...

There has been and is no faster/more powerful Notebook system on the market than the Clevo P8 series for the past 3 years, doesn't matter what other ODMs try to tell you.

Any pics of the new CPU heatsink? Are they still running with 3 fans or is there a 4th?

You would need to do it this way:

    http://www.bplus.com.tw/Adapter/M2F.html

It would also require an M.2 extension cable as well as a way of fitting the U.2 drive in the SSD spot without letting the connector making contact.
Or wait for the M.2 900P Optane... ;)

heh im pretty good when comes to looking for weird cable and mods, take a look at this one.

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/NGFF-M-2-t...800114?hash=item3adce072b2:g:u3gAAOSwsW9YyNwm

this one will guarantee to fit under the keyboard.

well in both cases the item from bplus and this era-adapter cable, both need 12v rail for 900p to work. 900p is 15mm height and might fit into where slave GPU is but i dont have any measurement so i can't say for sure, as i dont own the laptop. like what meaker mentioned they could make laptop thicker with thicker heatsink when 8 cores come around but thats another yr.

technically we can use the 12v portion from GPU power cable to give 12v to power the 900p, but im not sure how that work, cause sata power has 15 pins and that GPU power cable only has like 7-8, and not all of them are interchangeable.

That would have been a fourth fan but it was not included as the performance difference was not considered worth it (and ducting the main fan round hurt performance), the passive block helps keep the VRMs a little cooler.

In regard of quality, p750 p770 p775 p870 are all of exellence except for the keyboard.
The best keyboarded laptop released recently are the old alienwares and if we go further, the old thinkpads. Tbh keyboard of the mentioned Clevo laptops are very disappointing and the worse thing is the keyboard gets too hot to be actually used while playing games for couple of hours. The old alienware such as m17x r3 or r4 or even r5(aka aw17 r1) had very decent keyboatd layout and the temperature of the keyboard were nice to be used as well.

If you are using a laptop with an ext k/b or mouse, then clevo is the best for sure but if you are not, msi laptops such as gt8x with mechanical keyboard even though they may suffer from throttle, are very nice choice for sure.

I agree, I'm back to an M18x and the keyboard is great. Love the aluminum chassis as well.

Hoping Clevo does a better keyboard and possibly aluminum chassis next time around

i love this new CPU cooling but i see clevo still put this old noisy fans. I was hoping for some kind of clevo's AeroBlade 3d with thin metal fins. Not this old plastic ones.

I really want to buy this and im getting excited about it however I am on the fence because of a few issues.

    1. The laptop chassis looks so damn cheep!
    2. Worried the upgrade path for both the cpu and the gpu might be limited due to chip manufactures such as needing a new motherboard for the next line up
    3. How long would it take before a permia bios to come out for this model also?

Maybe silly to be concerned about this stuff but its something i think about maybe someone can help me along with these concerns.

1- It isn't the best, but isn't cheap either. But then it doesn't really matter because the performance you get out of this beast is the most important metric. Just take care of it and you're good. Enthusiasts don't buy this laptop for looks, fluff, lights, etc.

2- Noone can guarantee upgrade paths for laptops anymore especially when Intel and nVIDIA are changing the design of their stuff very often. Just buy the best that's out there today, and enjoy. Otherwise you'd be waiting for ever and life is too short for that my friend.

3- Only @Prema can answer that but if you get it from a Prema Partner, at least you know you'll have it the moment it's released.

don't forget to email [email protected] if you were gonna buy it to get your NBR Forum discount

Thanks for that, I have a BGA 7820HK highly upgraded and have been happy over all however I have been less than happy with the limitations of the processor not to mention to know im already at the end of my upgrade path, that said its been solid thus far. Though it can get very toasty in there and I have to wonder what the temps will be like in this system though im more inclined to keep an over clock on the lower end.

I have one more question would anyone recommend 4k screen i didn't go that direction last time and was always curious about it but kinda shied away because i herd it looks off on windows but i've never seen it and cant make a judgment.

    Thanks for your help

At that point, I think most people would just be getting a new computer. That's a lot of mods for a new board.

we are not talking about a budget laptop
If I buy a p870km1 for 3500/4000$, 300$/400$ for those parts are not a big problem IMO

That's partly why I didn't mention price. That's a lot of modification, which in addition to cost may cause problems with other hardware, may not work even with alteration, may compromise case stability, may not fit right even after modification, and may even break things in the process of upgrade. No one factor alone would necessarily be a deal breaker but when you're modding that many things to make something work, then issues, costs, risks, and compromises, potentially to its use as a laptop (what if the case doesn't close/fit when you're done?) can add up. By no means am I saying not to try it or that it's completely impossible (edited previous comment), but the lack of overall practicality would likely mean no one is in a hurry to facilitate it either. The barriers to actually doing it would be significant.

No plans to do so, for the same reasons as mentioned by others on this thread.

To be honest it's not up to Clevo to provide customer service or drivers to owners of the laptops, this is the responsibility of resellers and system integrators - and as you'll see here there is a lot if good customer service, support and drivers available from the majority of us

Installing drivers off of the disc that came with the lappy now, and VGA states wrong version for WIN10 Pro x64, and the Killer network manager requires .NET 4.6 to install... LOL

No need to go for a go faster stripe just yet but it's a modding option ;)

On a serious note, why would the Nvidia driver installers (downloaded and on disk) tell me that it isn't compatible with my version of Windows (Win10 Pro x64)?

edit - I also tried installing the driver through the device manager, it can identify the 1080 card, but won't install the driver.

edit - GRRRR locking driver installs to "updated" Win10 versions...
