Yes, I know what you mean. Unfortunately the translucent sandpaper-esque 'graininess' effect on whites and light colours is present on all modern PC displays, regardless of matte or glossy (yet strangely absent on smartphones and tablets).

I see, thank you, guess I'll just have to get used to it then. I don't notice it on retina macs though so I figured it had something to do with this particular panel type or something.

It will be a protective coating while the macbook uses edge to edge glass instead to protect the panel.

Where are you downloading the drivers from?
I'm trying to download the latest versión of the Hotkey software but it's so slow.
Any other source? -

Wooo my NP8652 just shipped, can't wait to get the thing!

I also notice this graininess on the desktop monitors at my university and my brother's desktop monitor (FHD TN).
No idea why but it has become very, very commonplace. It's a recent trend.

I see, thank you. I've been mostly using a five-year old Vaio and a similarly-aged iMac along with a few smartphones so that was quite a surprise for me. The fact that it's present on all kinds of displays now is pretty astounding, but at least I hope that means choosing Sharp instead of Samsung was not a mistake.
-
I probably didnt notice the weird grain because of possibly having all my displays with it made me accustomed to it.
-
Yes I find it very strange that smartphones and tablets have stayed immune from this trend, yet it has pretty much become ubiquitous in recent PC displays.
It's not matte vs glossy as both types can have it.
It's not high PPI vs 'standard' 1080p, as again both can have it.
It's not TN vs IPS, as yet again both can have it.
The only clue to the potential cause of this effect that I have found so far is that older displays seem to not have it, but more recent ones do - and the fact that smartphones/tablets don't seem to have it.
Then again, I remember seeing a super cheapo unbranded tablet which did have it. That's the only instance that I've ever seen it on mobile devices though.

Hello fellow NP8651 owners, I love this laptop's performance however I'm not sure on how to get Nvidia's Surround setup for multiple monitor gaming. (I searched the thread for "surround" and "eyefinity" and did not find any information.)
Have any of you been successful in enabling Nvidia Surround on games and your multiple monitor setup? It appears the "surround" option is missing on the Nvidia Control Panel.
I've read if you disable the Intel GPU in BIOS you can see the Nvidia Surround option but this BIOS does not have that option. (I haven't switched to Prema yet but it doesn't appear to be in Prema's options from what I've read). -
You cannot disable Intel iGPU in optimus laptops. I have yet to check for the Nvidia Surround setup though. I will look into it once I am out of the car.

You won't be able to use nVidia Surround as all screens need to be connected directly to the dGPU.
In the P65x all screens (internal and external) are connected to the iGPU.XzeroR3 likes this. -
Guys does anyone know where can i see clear pictures of the P651 and the P650, i can't find a decent picture with enough light to spot the material difference.

I saw those, and also searched on the web, but they are either on weird angles or seem altered. Does anyone know a picture of the laptop with a front angle on the palmrest of both?

Alright, the day has come!! Mythlogic got my P650SG laptop build and shipped much sooner than their "12-15 day business day" time frame had indicated. Under promise and over deliver, I suppose
The wife just texted me and my laptop has been delivered. I can hardly stand the fact that I will be stuck at work for the next 6 hours!
Anyway, my head and spinning, and I feel like I need to come up with a check list of things to check and test over the first few days. I have the 4720 CPU, the 4k Sharp screen, and the 980m.
Besides installing games; I have WoW, Diablo 3, Far Cry 4, COD AW, and Shadow of Mordor. What other utilities should I download and what tests should I run?LoneSyndal and flamy like this. -

Shadow is not that of a combustion maker... It surely heats gpu but cpu is not that sollicitated until 75 enemies are on-screen
Edit: Jaybee you forgot mr Fox's drivers for gpu optimization -
So my display is an LQ156D1JX01B (as expected pretty much) and while it might be hard to see on a photo this is pretty much how it looks (no Lightroom here yet so didn't fix the colors, it's much more bright IRL as it should be)

Rainbow noise ahoy, flat bright colors all look patterned. Granted, I was in a store today and looked at some of the screens there and indeed, not all of them but a lot of displays had this to a certain extent. This is somewhat annoying so if I don't get used to it I'll be on a quest to find a high-res screen with a less pronounced noise, if one will ever exist.
But this sharpness is just so good regardless, 4k is the way.
P.s. this laptop has a "display off" hotkey! Awesome, this is one feature I thought I'd miss after having that nifty button on my Vaio. -
I'm probably whining over nothing, just to avoid any accusations towards the otherwise excellent Sharp panel. Maybe I will get used to it, time will tell. At the very least I don't see it being a problem in gaming, maybe only when working with graphics.
P.s. in anime it's kinda annoying since it might not always be noticeable on the BGs, but it sure is noticeable on the character faces, heh.Last edited: Jan 22, 2015 -

For look with grain with matte film on. I dont want to go through the trouble of removing to see the default grain.
It doesnt trouble me at all though as I have used a workstation with same grain matte display. -
Just got shipping confirmation from Xotic! My SG should be here on Tuesday, Hurry up UPS!

Laptop has arrived, but I won't be able to get it until after the 26th.... Grrrrr.....
Just a quick question, does this laptop have an option to switch power profiles when on main/battery? My old Gigabyte laptop did that and it was sweet. (Power saver on battery then auto-switch to high-performance when on AC) -
Has anybody with a Eurocom laptop flashed one of Prema's bios? Any issues?
-
Hmm, so I downloaded the latest Hotkey, re-pasted both the GPU & CPU, and under-volted by around -40mV.
When running the stress test in XTU, I still get CPU temps of up to 93C.
Will flashing a new BIOS/EC really make much of a difference in terms of temperatures? -
Does anyone have the Mythlogic version of this machine? They have a few options that I have not seen the Sager versions have and supposedly their FHD IPS screen is a 72% gamut. I have read really good things about XoticPC as well and I know they have a big presence here. However, a better screen in FHD rather than 4k would be ideal.
-
Ok, I've tried the prema vbios for the 980m and it's still having possible gpu issues.. It runs smooth and then every few seconds the FPS will just fall to 10 fps for half a second. This is not exactly the enjoyable experience I was expecting for a new laptop. I don't think the GPU is throttling and I know the CPU is fine, however look at the attached image. The little troughs in the GPU Load and Memory Load align perfectly with my FPS drops. Thus the GPU is saying it's suddenly being underutilised when it shouldn't! Does anyone have any suggestions or possible causes for this?? Thanks in advance

How is the 8652 for Battlefield 4? I primarily play WoW, Marvel Heroes, Starcraft II, LoL, Football Manager and Civilization V, but the one FPS game I do play pretty regularly other than TF2 would be BF4 (and BF Hardline when it comes out)
Also has anyone tried any MMOs or strategy games at 4k on this machine and are they playable? I'm at the point where I am trying to decide between two very different machines (8652 and the GT80 Titan) with my primary goal being to play as many games at 1080p and avg 50-60 frames for as long as possible. It seems like the 8652 can largely do that for $1000 or so less than the gt80 titan and obviously is a lot more portable, but the gt80 does have a much better screen and a little bit more future proofing).
Thanks! -
