    Back on topic...

To anyone who bought this laptop from XoticPC, how long was it from order to ship? I know they say 9-16 days but the last laptop I ordered from them shipped 4 days after I ordered.

This is awesome but what if you did the same thing to the 980M version?

But could you? The 180W power supply might not let you. Also, the temps COULD be a little too high

They cap both at +135mhz however with a modified BIOS you can unlock both.

Given the temps is it safe to say that the life of the gpu should not be affected?

Exactly. In my opinion the 970m version is simply a better value. Like you said, Save $300, Smaller form factor, and more overclock head room. As you've just seen the 970m can reach the 980m level with just a +50mv boost. Temps are still fine on it. On my 860m, my voltage was +138mv and it ran just fine but really hot. Can't wait to see the limit of the 970m. Any word on max safe voltage for the 970m?

Back on topic, like care to share that bios Mr. Wingnut?

We should level the playing field and let the 980m free from its chains too. I volunteer mine :)
I can already increase the clocks, but unlocking the slider not yet. Also for the overvolt I'd like to look at your Voltage Table. Your power table is of interest too...

Prema will be the one to release the bios to public. I'm sure he's asked wingnut to hold off and keep testing until prema is more confident it won't cause issues to folks. This has been the case when I've tested bios mods for him in the past.

    Also:

It would be really nice to get that BIOS. However, I have a bad feeling about it :(
Prema also made me a BIOS but he was not able to release to everyone because the BIOS was somehow locked to my laptop. (Eg. He could not make a custom BIOS for ALL p34gv2's; each BIOS had to be custom made). I really hope it isn't the case, but I think the modified BIOS Wingnut was given works only on his laptop

    Edit:
Found the reply from Prema when I asked about using the modified BIOS on other systems:

"That model [P34Gv2; however the same MIGHT apply to the Sager Np865X] can not flash a modified BIOS the regular way. I can only make it flash your very own dump, which contains your serial number for warranty, your MAC address etc. We can prepare something later that dumps the users BIOS, then automatically Mods it and writes it back to the chip, but that requires a bit of time, otherwise we end up with many broken systems...

So if you want yours modded now, make it worth my time and push my coffee button and I'll do a custom Mod which will work on your very own system only."

I THINK Wingnut might have a customized version just for him; though he would know best. It'd be great if Prema could let us know if we can expect a modified BIOS for the NP865X in the future.

I'm torn on this one (Specific bios required for each person...)

If he had to custom make a bios for everyone, he should require some type of donation for each person he modifies the bios for...which I think would be great. Regardless of how much he currently collects in donations, it isn't enough for the guy. He provides incredible work for us and I value that work a ton.

On the other hand...if everyone has to message him for bios mods, it will take him away from other projects...besides--I can only imagine the nightmare of repetitive questions this thread will have to endure. :p

Good idea. Curious to see how temps are and how far you can go. Of course, if you see the max performance of the 980m OC'd we need to also see the max performance of the 970m OC'd ;)

    STOCK AUTO FANS were used.

It is actually only about 50-60mV bump. The voltage is correct in GPU-z, not correct on the nVidia Inspector slider.

It seems there is TDP limit though because much beyond this, regardless of voltage, there ends up being some GPU throttling/bouncing of the clock speeds.

Mod is courtesy of Prema, and I'm sure he will be releasing a mod for it soon, granted donations to him are always welcome.

Very enticing... I was actually in the middle of studying the Maxwell Tweaker, but all mods are to desktop cards and those Power Tables do not correspond (we need those upped!). Also I can't seem to get a straight answer on either the voltage slider unlock or the clock slider unlock so all I have now is a higher boost clock.

Still, your cards clocks are sick... Congrats. Any ASIC score to go with that?

I just PM'd Prema and volunteered as a Guinea pig.

So correct me if I'm wrong, but you just reached 980m performance levels while running COOLER than the 980m?! That doesn't really make sense... From your screenshot your max GPU temp was 64 and a user with a 980m reported 75 max temperature...

Well the P650SG I have for review it ran only 61C: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...mpressions-review-htwingnut.html#powercooling

But also note that fan speeds need to be taken into consideration. Fan speeds were faster/louder on the P650SG than the P650SE. Unfortunately it seems we can't read fan RPM speeds with HWInfo or other app.

I see what you guys mean. Fair enough. Even so, that temperature is remarkably good. Seems like the 970m is a no-brainer- 980m performance with temps in the mid 60's on a thin laptop thats under $1300 USD. SOLD! :D
(OK, I'm biased since I just ordered the 970m version ;))

    Hi guys.

Got a question for those with GTX 970M 3GB vRAM.
Do you guys suffer any stuttering issue due to not enough vRAM?

Here's a compilation of vRAM usage of some of the latest game from gamegpu.ru website :

You are in the Clevo section here, no locked down secure flash nonsense like MSI, Lenovo, Asus and all the others (YET). ;)

Slowly slowly big boy, we also need to find the (PSU/temp) sweet-spot for everyone...

Anyway, of course you also have your usual "GO-WING-NUTS" - version with power throttle completely disabled in your inbox. :D

No idea, but I can tell you that the vRAM of the 3GB GTX970M and 4GB of GTX980M clocks a couple hundred Mhz higher than their MXM counterparts.

'Not enough VRAM'??? Most games I've seen require at most 1 GB VRAM to run smoothly. Shadow of Mordor is cr*ppily un-optimised. Even X-Plane 10 doesn't require > 1.5 GB and that is reputed to kill all graphics cards.

That chart is meant for desktops which are water-cooled and have no power/temperature/space limits (hint: take a look at the specs in your chart.)

As far as I'm concerned, I don't need and want games to run at 60 FPS continuously - this means that my GPU isn't being taxed much, if at all. My personal sweet spot is 30-45 FPS.

    But to each his own

Finally had time to try some overclocking on my laptop, with a 980M. I'll be interested to see just how far it can be pushed should an unlocked BIOS be made available! FWIW going for a 500MHz overclock on the memory caused 3DMark to crash out. I didn't tinker with voltages.

Well, just did a quick test on Dragon Age : Inquisition on my GTX 765M with 2GB vRAM

1366x768 on High - around 1.2GB vRAM dedicated usage from GPU-Z
    1920x1080 on High - around 1.3GB vRAM

    1366x768 on Maximum - around 1.7GB vRAM
    1920x1080 on Maximum - around 1.9 (almost 2GB) vRAM

It's good if you guys have no issue on stuttering.
    Coz I've pre-ordered the Gigabyte P34W v3 with GTX 970M 3GB.

Hark! Bluetooth survives yet another day without issues!

A real stress test: in excess of an hour in Crysis 3 just standing there still - with a resulting constant 99% GPU load. Bam! Laptop handled it like a champ. Maximum of 63°C for the GPU and 64°C for the CPU. No thermal throttling of any kind. Bam!

On systems with "unlimited" AC Power like the P5 and P3 with dual PSU it's best to disable the power targets for good and just only leave a reasonable thermal barrier...

But on this model either the AC Adapter or the thermals will dictate us the limits and the public mod will be adjusted accordingly so people don't have to face AC Adapter shutdowns.

Anyway HT also has a vBIOS with power limits disabled, so let's see what it can really do... :D

My memory cannot overclock well. While my previous Gigabyte P35X v3's 980M managed +500 easily, this one has graphical artifacts at a mere +300. I think around +200 is going to be the stable limit. A shame, but it means that I will be able to increase the core clock more without breaking the PSU 180W power limit. Core clock is the more important factor in performance, as I found from my P35X v3 testing, even at higher resolutions than 1080p.

I've been getting constant crashes to desktop as soon as I launch FireStrike. In windowed mode it runs fine, but not the proper test in fullscreen mode - which you need to run for the overall score. Latest Intel driver. 344.75 NVIDIA driver. Stock clocks. Games run fine though.

Yep.. nice to see the potential but like you I aim for this laptop to be in service for years. Once the need arises to push a little more all the fine work done by folks here will make it easy to squeeze more performance out of my machine. The main reason I sprung for the 980m is longevity. Spend a few hundred more to get longer service out of the beast!

FYI - My laptop finally shipped!! :D Tracking shows it hits my door on the 2nd.

I've found my stable memory clock. A measly +130MHz. Wow. What a dud.

In a more positive light at +135/+130 I'm in no danger of breaking the 180W barrier according to my power consumption monitor.

But still... that memory overclock is shockingly low. I've never had GPU memory that is so incapable of overclocking. Really makes my previous 780M and 980M look amazing overclockers by comparison (both could do +500MHz easily).

That's excellent! 970M is a brilliant price/performance ratio, makes me want to consider getting one for my laptop if I could make it work! Is that Prema mod a modded vBIOS like svl7's, or is it somehow bound up in the BIOS (so not a stand alone vBIOS mod)?

Yeah, this time around I came out a loser.

Of course I have no idea how high the core can go because of the stock BIOS +135 limit. It may turn out to be a good core clocker to make up for the poor memory performance. One can but hope.

Nice OC HT but I'm quite sure I'll beat that quite easily once I get my 970M ;)

Just joking but the 3940XM will help with the overall score... Perma, once I get the 970M working, I'll PM you and hopefully you can help me with an unlocked vBIOS ;).. I will give you a free beer too :D

Yeah mine finally shipped on 26th too. Scheduled for 2nd. But no way I'm waiting (potentially) whole day for them. I put it on hold and will pick it up myself. Time to hope for a good silicon.

    What's your asic cakefish?
