My Gelid GC-Extreme thermal paste arrives tomorrow. I did a search and didn't find any P650SE/G repaste or heatsink removal videos.

Did I miss one or any recommendations?

    Thanks!

It's honestly the easiest thing you can do. Unscrew it properly and remove. Clean off properly the old paste (if using ICD, SOAK THE OLD PASTE FOR 3-5 MINUTES BEFORE WIPING OFF TO AVOID SCRATCHES) and then apply the new paste. A dot for the GPU (unless you want to spread it manually with a card or something) and a LINE for the CPU (as it's a rectangle). Real easy.

You can add me to the battery poll: p650sg plus fhd ips screen here, on power saver min brightness wifi and Bluetooth on, when browsing and coding I get around 5-6h of use. Battery life is something I care for, and this laptop fulfills truly my needs.

Edit: when on balanced and average brightness, it is around 4h too

My GPU Clock in Shadow of Mordor max settings was 1038 and VRAM clock was 2506. GPU usage was ranging from 90 to 99 % but usually 99%. Framebuffer usage was around 50%. Unfortunately I don't know the usages of those people at the moment.

Battery poll as well, around 4 hours on balanced/average brightness. All stock, Wifi on, bt off. I haven't tried power saving though, but coming from an average of 2hrs from my previous laptop, I can say I'm immensely satisfied. :)

Ok ...so my machine is coming tomorrow so I started downloading all the drivers and I would really appreciate your feedback.

    Here's what I have found.

    From Clevo Website:
    -cardreader
    -chipset
    -fingerprint reader
-hotkey app 3.09.21 (is this the latest?)
    -Intel Rapid Start 3.0.0.1051
    -Intel Rapid Storage 13.2.0.1016
-Intel Management Engine (is this necessary?)
    -LAN
    -Realtek Audio
    -Touchpad

    Drivers from other websites
    -Intel VGA 15.36.14
    -Killer Bluetooth 3.0.0.493
-Killer Wireless N1525AC 11.0.0.471 (just driver withouth Killer Suite bloatware)
    -Nvidia 344.75 (for OC capabilities)

    Are these the best drivers?

I read somewhere that some people are getting BSOD due to Synaptics Touchpad drivers. Are the ones from Clevo website ok or should i get newer ones from Synaptics website

What's the purpose of Intel Rapid Start, Intel Rapid Storage and Intel Management Engine.

Are all these drivers necessary or are there some that I can/should skip or replace?

Cheers for the battery polls all- I've ordered the P650sE (i7, HD IPS & 970m) from EuroCom :)

I plan on some creating undervolting/throttle limiting profiles so I can quickly & easily get into a power saving mode. If I can get 5 hours of this I'll be super happy.

I'll retract my previous 2-2.5 hours battery life statement. The lack of an "Estimated Time Remaining" next to the percentage level is throwing me off and I can't accurately gauge the true amount of time.

It feels like it doesn't as long as some other users are reporting. Last night and this morning I used it on battery approximately two hours (I attempted to log how much time I spent by looking at the clock) and have a 50% charge left. I also turned off keyboard backlight as it seems to drain a lot of battery.

It may well be that my perception of battery life is incorrect as it does last 3+ hours.

Fyi update on my broken touchpad and stuttering keyboard: have contacted XMG / MySn who have advised that I reinstall the drivers (which I had of course tried before) which didn't work so I'm now going to have to RMA the laptop (I'm waiting for them to reply to my email). Any idea how fast they are at turning this around?

Really annoyed at this :(. Brand new £2,000 laptops shouldn't have basic hardware problems like this.

Testing out a few things in Intel XTU regarding my cooling issues, and I've found that changing the 3/4 core multiplier down to 33 from the default of 34(effectively changing the turbo boost to only 3.3GHz for 4 cores) immediately lowers the temperatures by 5-6c.
Question though, is there any extra processing overhead in using XTU to change these values? Does XTU change the values at a hardware level? Or if I uninstall it will everything revert back to default?

@checkout87: with standard 2 yr warrantry they have a maximum repair time of 48 h inhouse. add to that the shipping time, depending on your location, and you could be looking at no more than a week tops :)

@fatpizza: intel xtu is directly connected to the system bios and needs to be installed in order to keep the values. the program itself doesnt need to be open, since there is a low-level service that takes care of saving the settings u input. big advantage in comparison with direct bios tweaking: if u input unstable settings, the system just resets to default values at the next boot :)

    @Jinx:

    - latest hotkey app can always be found at the clevo website (since its a clevo-specific software). just beware that sometimes the different download locations (asia, usa, europe) provide different versions. asia has turned out to be the most up to date
    - IME is necessary, or rather recommended to be installed
    - i would stick to the clevo synaptics drivers. i used to hunt down the latest touchpad drivers, but i stopped doing that because it involves a lot of trial and error with barely any new features whatsoever
    - rapid start = enhanced hibernation functionality, bringing back the system from an intel-specific sleep state
    - rapid storage = a must if u have solid state based storage in your system. gives a performance boost compared to the default microsoft ahci drivers
    - management engine = its a little bit aking to chipset driver, basically manages some low-level motherboard functionality
    - do not skip any drivers due to being lazy, they all have their place and function :p only driver in your list that i personally skipped was rapid start, since i never use hibernation anyways.

    cheers!

    @jaybee83

    Thanks man!

That tiny tidbit about intel rapid start is exactly the kind of info I was looking for.

I'm also not using hibernation so I won't install it.

I won't receive my SSD until 2 weeks from now so I also won't install intel rapid storage.

Now I also downloaded all test software that I guess I'll use:

    -3dmark v1.4.828
    -intel burn test v2.54
    -prime 95 v2.85
    -CPU-Z V1.71.1
    -GPU-Z V0.8.1
    -Furmark v1.15.1.0
    -Unigine Heaven

What other test software would you guys suggest?

Also where do you guys download kombustor...I downloaded Afterburner 4.1.0 and it doesn't have Kombustor included.

When I look for Kombustor on MSI website I can't find any download link

Same for NVFlash...could you give me a link for a version that definetly works with Prema's vBios?

afaik theres no additional program needed to flash the prema vbios...

you can pretty much skip kombustor and furmark, since nvidia cards throttle automatically, once they detect one of these tools being started.

    i can also recommend: 3dmark11 / unigine valley / Cinebench 11.5 & 15 / PCMark 7 & 8 / HWInfo64 / Intel XTU / AS SSD & Anvil Storage Utilities once u get ur SSD / CrystalDiskInfo / Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU)

Yeah the VBIOS is super easy to install. You don't even have to disable the GPU first. Just run and install and it works, as simple as that! All hail Prema!

So instead of furmark should i just us unigine valley/heaven and 3dmark firestrike for stress testing and/or overclock testing?

Already downloaded xtu and hwinfo64 but forgot to write about them :D

Anyone has done any overclock above 200MHz/380MHz stable? Still looking at others attempting this (if they are willing). I still cant get anything stable above those values and some other laptops are able to hit 240-260MHz on core clock. Was wondering what voltages is everyone using to get those...

Also, if you want, the Sound Blaster X-fi software which our model supports.

I like to use Cinebench as a standard test to quickly compare CPU performance across a wide range of results.

havent checked proper stability yet (just gpu-z built-in shader test), but ballpark on my mxm version is +295 Mhz on stock voltage and +440 Mhz at 1.2 V (core, that is. havent played with the vRAM yet)

make sure to properly place the thermal pads, since theres not way to check thermals on vRAM and voltage regulators... cover as many gpu components as possible with the heatsink and thermal pads!

Guys, I went ahead and ordered the MSI GE62 Apache Pro notebook. It was a bit more, but it made sense for me with the extra RAM, DVD drive, guaranteed good display, better battery, and 2-year warranty. Still I want to thank all of you for helping me out with my purchasing decision and providing me with great information about the P650SSE.

Not on memory, but on core I have got up to +300 and could easily have gone further with higher voltage, but I was too scared to try - it was sucking ~200W from the 180W adapter and I didn't want to risk the PSU dying on me!

    I'm on high performance

When i use msi afterburner it reads 540mhz, but on gpu-z it reads 1127mhz when i play games.

I tried playing grid autosport, I was averaging abot 60fps(yes vsync was off) on ultra preset 4x msaa.
It's alot slower than what i saw from others with the same settings.

But on TR on ultra i get around 100 when i did the benchmark, compare to other results it's about right.

btw my ram is a single 8gb, will i be getting alot better performance with 16gb dual channel memory?

I finally found and ordered the Sharp panel ( LQ156D1JX01) so that I could upgrade from the Samsung panel. Unfortunately, the Sharp panel uses a 40pin connector with a pin pitch of .4mm instead of .5mm like the Samsung panel. Did I just waste $250 or can I replace the display cable in my machine? I tried looking for adapters online but that was a fruitless search. I think i can get to the display wiring if I remove the GPU heatsink... But, where might I get said cable? Do you think Xotic or Sager would sell me one?

1 - Take GPU-Z and nVidia Inspector's info over MSI AB
2 - Some games (BF4 is one of them; Grid Autosport may be another) benefit from dual channel memory greatly. There is a distinct possibility (though I cannot check for you) if dual channel or not makes a difference in GRID, but I can 10000% guarantee it does in BF4.
3 - TR is fairly GPU-heavy and frugal on the rest of a PC
4 - Check and see what your CPU temps and speeds were during Grid. Grid 2 likes my CPU. A lot. I mean a LOT. If you are overdrawing your CPU or it's getting too hot, it may be throttling and you would lose performance that way too. If you are throttling from heat, you might need to repaste and prop up the notebook etc. If you are throttling because of power draw of the CPU (I.E. it's downclocking while in safe temps and you can't figure out why) then your only bet is to attempt to undervolt it as best as you can so that the actual TDP it uses is lessened. Once this is done, you should theoretically keep max boost more often as you won't be running out of power. Unfortunately increasing current limit and power draw limits does not work on HQ chips, so you're plumb out of luck increasing the values that way.

    Hi all,

I was interested in purchasing a P650SG from XoticPC and noticed that the default screen is listed as "Super Clear Matte Type Sager IPS Screen". Just wanted to confirm that this is the LG FHD IPS that everyone has been talking about? Thanks guys.

the SKU listed is our internal SKU. Not the display manufacturer SKU. They will be different. We can't guarantee a specific display to be used as we aren't guaranteed ourselves. If I've been keeping up with the thread I believe the predominant used is the AUO but every once and a while see Chi-Mei mixed in but not sure if those are specifically for Sager or if certain system builders would be using them.

Chi-Mei would not be LG. I was actually referring to the default displays. Didn't notice the referenced display was the IPS option, that would typically be the LG based on feedback here on this thread.

Alright, Gelid in hand, laptop open.

CPU heatsink/pipes came right off super easy.
    GPU...... not coming off easily.

So before I keep trying to remove the GPU heatsink/pipes, by using more force I just want some one who has removed the GPU heasink to give me a sanity check and tell me that it's normal for it to be more difficult to remove.

Are the fans separate from the heatsink for the GPU like it is for the CPU?

I'm pretty sure... but you might want to remove them if you have trouble taking off the heatsink first. Make sure it's fully unscrewed; you can use the service manual if you need extra help.

How to use bigger PSU with P650SG? Link in OP isn't working.

Edit: Found it here. Link in OP needs to be fixed.

Edit 2: And here is the correct link for the M.2 to USB3 mod which is also broken in OP

What options does Prema Mod unlock?

    Thanks :)

on the SE model the fans are separate. SG models the fans are part of the heatsink assy and just keep the whole thing together when removing.

Where are you all setting fan profiles? I'm just not seeing it.

I flashed both of PermaMods bios and updated Hotkey but don't see where to set a Hotkey fan profile.

edit: Fn + Esc key, doh ....
