u can play around with intel xtu but without an unlocked multi u wont be really able to accomplish much there ;)

i was just curious as to what clocks your cpu would be holding under continued stress :)

If I am not mistaken and I will certainly double check it was 2700 mhz...
But that was default.. I will put the turbo one and see what it runs and what temps it hits..

Other than that the 6700HQ is locked.. so trying for a higher lock won't happen right??

@JMattes Which driver are you using on the 980m? I'm having trouble getting the 980m to perform under load. Are you using the FireStrike test?

Only load I placed on it was the 3D Benchmark test.. Can you link me to Firestrike?
I grabbed the drivers off the Sager Website and have not updated them. I typically like to avoid new Graphics drivers as they often have issues..

Honestly I was just curious, noticed mine heated up pretty quickly in that area as well.

@JMattes I actually just used the drivers on Nvidia's website and got a hell of a jump in performance. Firestrike Results:

    Score: 8301
    Graphics Score
    9633
    Physics Score
    9942
    Combined Score
    3634

The power supply from Sager on the P650RG (980m) is 200W made by Chicony

Uploading images to this site is a bit tough so I went through Imgur.
I didn't realize how smuggy this metal frame gets!

I ran the Strike (demo) test and got the following score on the test:
    Score 8458
    Graphics Score 9893
    Physics Score 9840
    Combined Score 3681

These were off the Sager site drivers and doing nothing else other than plugging in the psu..Not sure how to control the fans yet, but during the Strike you can hear the fans ramping up. GPU hit 99% load and 71C max during the test..

What do I use to run the GPU at 100% load for a few minutes??

Turned on the high performance mode to run prime blend again... core are sitting at 3093mhz at 100%, however the max says 3493mhz, but that isn't what they are doing during the test... Throttle?? Fans remained normal in sound

It's pretty cold in my place... Thermostat says 66F, but seems a tad colder.. Couldnt get the CPU Core to spike higher than 68C in blend.. Needed to run Small FFTs to get an increase.. to 72/74(one core).. Ran that for 10 minutes.

The left side by the vent in only a tad warm..

wow, 200W psu! nice, thatll give u P6 users more headroom to overclock the gpu ;) u can use occt, prime95 or intel xtu stress test to put 100% load onto the cpu for custom timeframes :)

could it be that 3.5 ghz is the max turbo on one core? either that or its the regular power throttle one sees with BGA cpus ;)

Actually thats not throttle....the 3.5 Ghz is just for one core....these are the clocks you get per core
    1 / 2 / 3 / 4
    3500 / 3300 / 3100 / 3100

so what you described was perfect for all 4 cores running at those clock speeds...so that means constant full turbo without any throttle and low temps...nice :)

I am extremely happy with the temps even tho that top right side by the vent gets warm. I can tell that will require maintenance/cleaning every 6 months or so.

Can someone link me to a program that will allow me to stress test the gpu?

Also last night I streamed my Xbox on my laptop (Win10) and it was smooth as butter.. For some reason i really wanna say it looks better on my laptop than the 65" tv I have :p

Anyone have any other request or questions? I am happy to try to answer.. I know my posts are no where near review status, but I try o_O

Hello guys, anyone with new Clevo P650RG (Sager NP8658-S) with a 4K screen, can you please confirm if the screen is matte or glossy? everywhere it says the screen is matte but some people reported the panel is glossy...

If you can share your experience with the 4k screen on this laptop that would be great... I'm looking for glossy 4k screen, but if it's matte and it's good enough (viewing angle and colors) I'll still go with it.

Some people say 4k screen is a problem on 15.6 laptops because of small icons and stuff, but I've heard windows 10 is great fixing that... if you can share your experience on this point as well, that will help.

    Thanks

Thanks Pat and JMattes! I'm pretty excited as this is my first new laptop in 11 (yes, more than a decade) years. It'll be a nice jump to go from a machine that was great for playing Knights of the the Old Republic to one that is great for playing Fallout 4.

Pat, you actually answered a question for me yesterday about the different network cards available while I was working with Cindy. The laptop is almost exactly what I wanted; I would have liked to have had my name laser etched on the bottom but that would have delayed the production enough that I wouldn't get the laptop in time for a trip I'm taking. Ah well, I know it'll be a great machine and I've read nothing but good reviews of Xotic so far. Looking forward to being able to write a positive review of both the laptop and the SI soon.

If it´s a Sharp 4k panel you could get either a matte or glossy panel. If it´s the crappy mustard yellow´s Samsung 4k it´s a glossy one (iirc).

Run Windows 10 scaling at 150% or 200%. 125% and 175% are not as good.

EDIT: from Sager - "15.6” 4K QFHD (3840x2160) Matte Display with G-SYNC Technology"

So after all the Samsung is matte. (It´s a Samsung because it´s a G-sync panel, the Sharp ones aren´t "certified" by nvidia)

So I'm planning on undervolting my laptop once I get it. I've skimmed the undervolting guide here on these forums but I'm aware of several other alternative programs besides RMClock for undervolting e.g. CPU-z and ThrottleStop. Is RMClock the accepted standard around these parts? Can anyone break down what makes it the recommended choice over the alternatives? Thanks!

I have always used XTU personally but then code any values into the bios once I am happy with a setting.

    RMClock doesn´t work with 4th 5th and 6th gen cpu´s (and i believe all "i" series cpu´s).

    http://cpu.rightmark.org/products/rmclock.shtml - yep, no "i" series cpu´s.

    Use Throttlestop or XTU.

The only (for now) 15" 4k panel that is certified for g-sync is a Samsung panel. On panelook, on advanced search, all i had to do was select brand:Samsung, aplication:laptop and resolution:3840x2160, and voilá, only one panel came up.

Nope, i have a P751ZM, check my sig. While i was researching my purchase i came up with some reviews of this Samsung 4k panel and they all mentioned mustard yellows....so beware. If you value nice colors you should wait for the Sharp 4k - Prema said it´s undergoing certification for g-sync.

Ah, good point! Thanks. Anything I should know to choose one over the other?
    (Edit)
Oh! It looks like Intel XTU only supports K and X SKU processors. I ordered the i7-6700HQ, so I guess that means I can't use XTU and must use ThrottleStop. ...I will still be able to undervolt the HQ, won't I?

It's meant primarily for those parts but yes I have mine set to 3.7ghz on all 4 cores with an undervolt of 55mv (it can do a bit more but I like to leave a margin).

    To the Skylake P650 owners:

*Could you tell me about the igpu dgpu switch? Is it toggled on from BIOS or by software then reboot?
*Has any of you tried installing any flavor of Linux on it? If so, does it work?
*If you acquired a Sager brand with Windows 10 pre-installed, how bad is the bloatware situation?

I would really appreciate it if any of those questions could be answered.
    Thanks in advance.

    @desktopsheavyonlap

    - Graphics switch is in the BIOS, so you need to restart. The options are a/ Optimus (MSHybrid or whatever you wish to call it!) and b/ dGPU only
    - Linux, haven't seen the Skylake model running it but previous gen worked with Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Mint and openSUSE and the current Skylake N1x0RD work with the same distributions. I'm sure someone else on here can confirm with P6xxRx models.

Will leave the Sager question to appropriate parties :)

No bloat ware really to speak of :)

You can get them without an OS and do it yourself too so there is no incentive for sager to stick any bloat on.

Hey guys, I got my P650RG yesterday. I basically swapped my old laptop's hard drive into it (after removing all hardware specific drivers and software), and it booted up without a hitch, with Windows installing all the basic drivers. I then installed most (if not all?) the Clevo drivers and everything is working great, with the exception of the finger print scanner and the SD card reader. I definitely installed these drivers, so not sure why they aren't working. And as for the SD card slot itself, it feels like I have to really force the card in there, its not a smooth slide. I'm in Windows 10 64bit... if anyone could help regarding getting the fingerprint and SD card to work that'd be great!

Edit: fingerprint works! Just SD card left... plus one "unknown device" in device manager with a hardware ID of ACPI\VEN_PNP&DEV_C000

Edit 2: sorted out the unknown device... it was the Airplane Mode driver. Now literally just SD card remains.

I personally still prefer a clean install, just to avoid any possibility of corrupt/missing/incompatible drivers.

Is it true that Clevo switched from the AUO B156HAN01.2 to the LG LP156WF4-SPL1 in this model?

I understand the former is compatible with G-Sync, but honestly i'd rather have the latter considering the massive difference in quality between the two screens.

I wonder if the AUO is available for those who don't want G-Sync. The screen is honestly the only thing holding me back from pulling the trigger on this.

LOOOOOOOOL I was putting the card in upside down... no wonder it seemed forceful to shove in there... how did it even go all the way? I've never used a laptop where the card is inserted with the contacts facing up. All good now.

They switched to LG because the AUO is not currently certified for G-SYNC.

The AUO has better colour reproduction/coverage, while the LG is brighter. I've had both, and they both have their ups and downs.

Eurocom offers both screens, just need to be specific as to which model you want (though the LG is the only option if you want G-SYNC).

just wondering, what is the impact on battery life of 4k vs 1080p? i know 4k uses more power, but i don't know if that's changed in the past year; have they gotten more power efficient now? i'm thinking about getting the 8658-s, and although I'm probably going to be ok with 1080p, I would just like to know.

Really? I don't see the option on their website, is this something you spoke to them about over the phone or...?

I'm not interested in G-Sync, so if what you say is true then I think I might just go with Eurocom.

if u go with 4k, go with the sharp instead of samsung display, since its IGZO tech helps it keep power consumption down :)
