Huh, thanks for putting in the effort to perform the comparison! Confirmed, the exact same configuration of the non-S version is $130 more. Unexpected...

Haha I tried to figure every way to sunday to save a few bucks on the laptop.. If you looking for an SSD, RAM and some of the other extras then the best way is to go with the S..

    Best savings by far!

Not in any way am I an expert, but I suspect they don't offer that option since an i5 would bottleneck the GTX980m 8GB and this is a High-Specs machine

I dont think so, 6th skylake i5 has 4 real-cores basically its an i7 but without the HT, and with gaming I dont think HT can do much.

there are vendors that offer i5 cpus, but only with the desktop chipset...

with BGA laptops, its normal that the just go with 1-2 cpu models, otherwise the number of mobo SKUs would be too great..

As mentioned above, the Skylake i5 is a quad-core chip, just without hyper-threading. It won't bottle-neck the 980M, not for gaming anyway.

There are a few select titles that can benefit from 8 threads, but those are still few and far between. For most every day tasks and the vast majority of games, a Skylake i5 will likely match the performance of a Skylake i7.

Why does Metabox act like they manufactured the laptop!?

    Eg
    They didn't develop/design/engineer sh*t!

yes, normally they will do BGA with limited options, I agree. But its doesnt matter because even BGA or PGA, there is no difference between put an i5 or i7 into a mainboard because the cpus have the same "socket" as I mentioned the i5-cpu is i7-cpu without HT.
Exactly, and instead of i7 6820HK they can offer the i5 6300HQ, now they can focus on bigger range of customers, i5 for lower and i7 for highend.

haha, actually, lots of clevo barebone shops do that kinda thing mysn/schenker/xmg do that as well, but they at least actually DO stay in regular touch with clevo directly and give input into the actual design of the machines :)

Just got the laptop! But not off to a good start.. can't get the back panel open.. can't remove two screws (two corner ones) on the heats ink side.. idk..

Damn.. left like I was turning that forever!

Well got past that! The ssd went in like a charm and Windows is installing. Went with the Win10 on a thumb. Good stuff. Don't see any dead pixels but I did notice some bad light bleed on the bottom.. it would bother me at all except it's like off center on the left.. anyway to fix that??

Sorry if this has been asked, but can anyone explain to me what the difference is between the Sager 9758-S and 8658-S? The only thing I can really tell at first glance is the color illuminated keys, and the 9758 is a lot heavier and also more expensive.

NP9758 is the Clevo P750DM. This model is slightly larger (1.4" chassis, 7.5 lbs) and incorporates a powerful desktop CPU. P750DM also includes Thunderbolt 3 port, which is lacking in the P650RG and P650RE.

The main difference is cooling capability, desktop cpu support and total lack of optimus. It's designed for really heavy cpu intensive workloads.

May I ask if using the dedicated gpu only mode will it affect the longevity and stability of the gpu under both heavy and normal load ? And which gpu will control the hdmi if i use the MSHYBRID mode ? I have seen on many laptops have optimus that they use the igpu to control the HDMI.

Using a chip will always make a chip age compared to leaving it off but we are talking tiny differences in life and something else is far more likely to go first (say 17 year vs 20 year chip life span). As for load vs load there would be no difference.

To record temps, Hwinfo64 is a good program..

As for benchmarks, look for 3D Mark 11 (which is free) and get 3D Mark (you will get the basic firestrike tests, to unlock more you have to buy the full version..)

    Gents,
Had a question. I am looking between the Mythologic Dia 1615s and Deimos 1615S. Obviously the big difference is in the CPU and whether the components are soldered or not. So for a guy that will do basic office functions, surfing the net, and playing RTS games, which is the better purchase? Looking for it to last 5yrs if I can, and for portability will be taking it on work trips (for the hotel mostly) and on deployments.

Looks like their Deimos is the p750DM and the Dia is the P650RG/RE model. The Deimos using the desktop processor would be better for CPU intensive tasks as it uses a desktop processor, but it is a little bigger. If you don't mind the size of the p750 and you are you putting the same GPU in them, i'd say go with the 750. The 650 is going to be a little smaller and easier to take with you so for your work trips and deployments your back might appreciate the 650 :D

It's a 2 lb difference between the two, and the P750DM is also about .3 inches thicker. The power supply is a bit larger and heavier too.

I went for the 650 myself just because of the size and weight difference. :D Just bump the CPU up to the 6820HK if you do get the 650.

Sounds like you will not be doing anything super CPU-intensive - if that is the case, desktop CPU is probably overkill.

hm difficult in his case. he needs portability (RG), doesnt need extreme powah (RG), but wants it to last 5 yrs (DM). id recommend the RG with the longest extended warranty u can get your hands on! with both cpu and gpu soldered on the RG, ull be very happy to be still under warranty when something goes bye bye...

Thanks gents. Last question, I have been looking at getting the laptop with Mythlogic, and their Dia 1615S seems to be the 650RE not RG, as it is only .98" thick. Has anyone noticed a difference in cooling with the thinner model? The Dia is the only model I have seen at this size that has the 980m 8gb GPU, so I am worried that it doesn't cool as well as say the 650RG since its a bit thicker. Thanks!

Mythlogic combines the two into the same order page. If you select 980M, it will be the larger RG model.

So this is like the 2nd day of really playing with the laptop.. the first day I installed the OS and drivers.. Today I am trying to get some games on it for testing.. Upon booting I see all the icons are messed up.. The background was in ok though.. I rebooted and it was fine.. Anyone have any clues as to what happened? Never seen this one.

I'm guessing it was just a little hiccup in the boot up on the system, for the most part should be fine, if it keeps happening let me know!

This actually happened to mine as well! A quick reboot solved it.

Xotic do you have the drivers for the fingerprint sensor? It seems to be installed and it worked fine with the trial OS the laptop came with but with this clean install it doesn't seem to be available for setup in the windows account options like before. Any ideas?

The warmest part is the back left spot yes.. I did have it on my lap the first night getting it and just downloading drivers and surfing the web it was warm..
Right now it is rather chilly in my place (65F). I ran Prime95 on the CPU, blend test and it didnt get over 70 degrees during the hour I ran it and the warmest spot was that corner.

    Why do you ask?

    Initial Impression:

This is my first gaming laptop and first new laptop in awhile (5 years). The 8658 is sleek and seems to be pretty solid. I took it apart tight away and put in a 500gb SSD which makes everything snappy. Installing Win10 drivers were a breeze.

Only problem with my unit is the slight back light bleed on the lower left side.. I don't mind light bleed when it is in the corner, but this is a sold 3 inches from the corner..

The hinges, key board, and build seem good. The unit is slightly audible during idle, but you literally need to listen for it. During load it gets a bit louder as the fans ramp up, but once again it's not bad at all.. Doesn't feel like the computer is a jet plane or anything.

    Basic Tests:

    6700HQ (stock) Prime95 Blend - Highest Temp 70 Degrees

980m (stock) 3DMark D11 Basic Edition - Highest Temp 68 Degrees, Graphics Score 11845, Physics Score 7132, Combined Score 6759

    What else??

SO what else should I be testing? I tried all my USB ports to make sure they worked, tested the HDMI, and did a dead pixel test and its all good. There a few other ports that I don't have items to test them with.

I want to make sure the computer is solid before the 30 day return policy is up.

I can snap some photos if anyone wants.. let me know.

So I am considering pulling the trigger on the P650RG with a 4K screen and 980m, but I have a few reservations. For those who have this or the previous models, how is the battery life when browsing and doing light work? What is the typing experience of the keyboard like? What more mainstream laptop would you compare the keyboard to? Lastly, has anybody tried using an Oculus Rift with one of these machines? Thanks.

Can anyone with an RG variant confirm what Watt PSU you get with the laptop?
Clevo's website states 200 watts and all resellers state 180 watt

Is there a utility that will allow me to play with fan control? Also is there a way to adjust the CPU clock speed on the fly? Like turn on the turbo or is that only done in bios?

i believe that you can toggle max fans on and off with Fn+1. As for disabling turbo you can turn max cpu performance in battery settings to 99% to disable turbo but i see no reason why you would want to with those temps :p

And yes please do let me know about what watt psu you have :)
