Ethrem, I'm in the same boat as you, no room for a desk or table at home or when traveling. I've read a lot of reviews and done a lot of research...was thinking about getting one of these....some people say their temps drop by 5-10C......guess I can always buy and return if it doesn't cool at all.....I like that you can customize placement of the fans.

It is probably games that don't play in sli so they are only using 1 gpu which is why only one is heating up

You can check load levels to see how well balanced the use on each is, obviously if they are different then temperatures will be different too.

I have one of these. While I like that you can change the fan arrangements, the fans are rather small and weak, unless cranked up all the way to the max. I think a lot of the airflow gets blocked off by the holes on the cooler itself.

Planning on getting one of these though

    http://www.amazon.com/Gaming-Laptop-Cooling-Turbine-SGA-4000-KKNF1/dp/B004G603E2

After swapping the MX200 mSatas around, I figured that the proximity of one them to the master GPU heatpipe is what's causing it to heat up so much. I'm going to take them out until I get the new cooler to blast away the heat. On some tests, I've hit temps of 75C on several occasions but i don't see throttling, as far as performance benchmarks is concerned so I'm guessing that the sensor is reading the surrounding temps rather than the device itself.

The problem with those laptop coolers is the intakes on the bottom of the notebook itself are tiny... A few people dremeled them out and put wide mesh screens and saw up to a 10C temp drop.

The internals will get less airflow however.

How so? You don't have to put foam inserts around the fans like some have. Just removing that plastic seems to do 80% of the work.

By making the airflow in easier there, it will flow less from the inlets around the casing reducing airflow around there. The fan only generates so much pressure.

Is it significantly less such that we ought to think twice about the case modding?
The fans can get replaced by desktop case fans though for better airflow. I can't remember where I saw the link on how to do it though.

No seriously, is there no space in the bedroom or no spare rooms?

It comes down to what you have in the machine, if you have hot running SSDs and memory and run a lot of I/O you might run into issues, this is where a cooling pad could have an impact.

I'm my roommate's live in aide (he's an amputee due to diabetes, lost his left leg) so I don't have any rent... Although our bills are more than the rent would be...

People don't realise how dangerous diabetes can be :(

If you did use a cooling pad you can open up any vents you like as they would increase the airflow internally.

Dear me... Maybe do some junk clearing.. I guess you just have to deal with what you have.. I live with my parents+sister in a 2 bed appartment and there's hardly any space but you just have to live with it..

I know what you mean.. My grandmother had her leg cut off due to diabetes (literally rotted off) and no doubt diabetes played a part in my grandfather's death.. It's probably the world's number 1 silent killer..

New room mate required or car boot sale required or new room mate agreement required!

EDIT: (Ooops, that was a bit insensitive of me, I posted that before I read about the diabetes leg thing, but I guess he might not need all the 'junk' in the living room - you could still do the car boot sale!)

He's a total pack rat... I just put up with it. I have my room and the only thing of his in here is some of his clothes in my closet and one of his dressers. Everything else is mine so if he wants to leave the living room and everywhere else in disarray it's fine until the first time I see a spider. Then its gonna be a war. Lmao.

As for his diabetes... Its sad but he doesn't really take it too seriously either. Getting him to make lifestyle changes in the 2 1/2 years I've lived with him has been nothing but a fight so my sympathy is there but its limited.

Anyway I just decided to compromise on my temps... Medium AA means 20+C drop with very little visual impact.

I'm seriously considering this laptop. My other two choices would be the MSI GT72 Dominator and the Gigabyte P37X. So I have several questions. Best place to buy it? Mainly looking at XOTIC PC but would love to hear where you guys got yours since its kind of an obscure laptop that not many retailers sell. Would the i7-4710MQ bottleneck 970M SLI? If I upgrade the main hard drive to the 2TB 5400RPM [SATA II - 3GB/s] would I be able to use that as the optical drive hard disk? I ask that because I think I might want to plan on using SATA III drives for the slots that support it. Is the IC Diamond Thermal Compound - CPU + GPU upgrade worth it? Not an expert on this kind of thing by any means. How are the keyboard and trackpad? What about the display and speakers? Do 970M's get really hot and make the fans loud? Sorry for all the questions just really want to be confident in my purchase given how pricey it is.

Mythlogic is where I bought mine, and I recommend them. Takes a bit longer, but they are a builder, not a reseller, so you only deal directly with them, not with two companies.

I got the 4910MQ and dual 980s in SLI, along with dual 500 GB M-SATA SSDs in RAID 0. No hard drive other than that. Since dual980Ms are not stressed by anything, it's been hard to get the fans to even spin much; I have to run a stress test to do so, and when the fans are at full speed, they are not quiet (but not too bad), but I can't get them to spin that fast in anything other than a stress test. 970Ms would probably be about the same.

I think your machine is a bit of a special case though. We know that kind of heat ain't normal. Even I have problems overheating my 780M unless I overclock, and my main GPU needs a fan replacement >_<

Well I'm working on replacing the thermal pads, just don't know what size to get. Its the only thing that makes sense.

I'll tell you though... TW3 runs like a rock star... 31 min, 89 average with all the bells and whistles including the hair works... Plugged in my Sony Gold Wireless headset and fan noise wasn't an issue and 1126MHz boost throughout. If I lock frames at 60, temps drop from 81 to 66. Since the TV is 60hz, it makes sense to lock the frame rate.

    Hello,

I own a NP9377 with sli 980ms. My screen is a 60hz refresh. As some background, I tried to pair this with two separate Gsync External Monitors the last few months and despite my efforts (or because I'm just too damn dumb) I could never get it working with my laptop - thing would just freeze. So with the release of the latest nvidia drivers yesterday and the release on Sagers website for gsync enabled laptops, here are my questions:

    1. Can my existing laptop with 980m slis be given gsync capability with the existing gpus?

    2. The only option for this machine remains only the 1080p/60hz for now? I still want a 1440p screen in here but barring that am thinking about having someone (wink Mythlogic) replace it with a 120hz panel as I don't feel comfortable doing that myself.

The thought with all of this would be a gsync machine with 120hz. Even at 1080p, I think that might be nice.

Any thoughts or guidance here? Is this possible with my rig?

    Thanks

Right now NV are having so many problems with G-Sync you cannot be sure of it working for you, but a complete lock seems strange? Dozens of G-Sync issues posted in the latest NV forum for 353.06.

The only official response (amongst all the stupid posts!) it that nvidia had to make a change to the way it works with windows 10 and it's still a work-in-progress.

Did you try a driver install with the G-Sync monitor attached but not in g-sync? Just straw grabbing! Don't know a lot about the g-sync thing :(.

The 120hz panel is a worthy investment, especially when games like GTA V can max it out! Even if g-sync is not a possibility.

Hey man, can you check something out for me? Does DSR now work for you with the latest driver? I see the option but only 'off' can be selected and the cursor jumps away from the drop-down. Looking to see if it's something I need to fix of if it's just a driver bug? Thanks :).

Thanks man, now my only hope is that the 120hz panel is the culprit. Otherwise it's a strip-out and re-install, not something I like doing when my machine is gaming so well :D.

Yes works for me but I prefer the 120Hz 2560x custom one I created. Does DSR run at 120Hz because I can only see a 60Hz option. I have a 144Hz monitor, so I'm not willing to sacrifice refresh rate of the monitor. Maybe I have it wrong though

I am sorry but what is DSR, and if you are trying to get gsync to work with the display panel you have in your laptop? I don't think thats possible I think you have to have a specific gsync monitor/display PLUS gpu(s) that are capable of it also....just trying to clarify somethings

DSR is dynamic super resolution. Rendering the scene at a higher resolution internally then down sampling to apply AA to everything in the scene. It's basically super sample AA, very high quality/compatibility with games but VERY demanding on performance.

TW3 is the most demanding game out right now. Even 980M SLI can't handle 1080p with 4x DSR, which is essentially 4K, without sputtering.

When you have DSR turned on, it enables resolutions above 1080p to be selected in-game.

That's exactly why I wanted to give it a try. With every game (almost) maxing out my 120hz refresh it seems to be a way to get very good quality on a powerful machine!

I was afraid it would only work at 60hz but might be worth looking at?

I think I'll wait out a decent driver from NV. With win 10 around the corner NV are having a terrible time working with the new code (to avoid multiple driver branches). Maybe with MS giving it away all the problems introduced with the win 8 HAL (TDR's) can be overcome more quickly? NV already admitted the G-Sync issues are due to changes in win 10...

Thanks very much for the info guys :D.

It still displays at 1080 but you don't need AA. The image is created at the higher res and then down scaled. No need for an algorithm to figure out the 'jaggies' and smooth them - well that's the theory.

DSR is AA. Downsampling or OGSSAA to be precise.

I believe it is... let me know if not :)

Random - how do you sit your X8 mate? What's the best way to reduce the temps of your gcards?

Thanks, looks like I need to strip out the NV driver and start again. The problem I have has not been reported by anyone else so it must be something I've done :(. I did try to get 3D working some time ago and used an external emitter. Even if I forced the 3D installation it then told me my display was not compatible. Maybe that messed something up?

Thing is that NV are struggling with drivers ATM. So many people having TDR problems. No-one seems to have talked about what I think is the root cause, and NV are keeping quiet. Every time M$ release a new windows version video timing errors become a nightmare to fix. They patch earlier versions to be compatible and ease upgrading so you're not safe even staying on an older version. Only XP (and earlier) does not force the use of the HAL by drivers to get to their hardware.

GPU OEM's will use coding 'tricks' to get through the HAL as fast as possible. Problem is that some configurations cause a 'clash' and a timeout occurs. What fixes it for one may not work fore someone else :(.

I digress, haha, I'll wait out a solid driver before investigating further.

As for the cooling, I use a Targus cooling pad. I went with that after trying a cheap one as the soft underside makes it useable as a lap top, and it's easy to pick up the pad and lappy as a unit. Probably not the best but just having some circulation makes a difference.

About the only complaint I have with the X8 is the fan table. It never cranks up to max when temps hit mid 80's C. At around 86C the boost throttles back to base clock. This takes the load off and the temp stabilizes. Manually go to max fan and instantly 10c ~ 15c cooler and it stays that way. Prema moved the throttle point to 92c in his modded vbios so better overclocking is possible but that's not the fix I want :(.

I did repaste just to be sure there was not a problem, but apart from saving a couple of C I still need to remember to crank up the fans during an extended gaming session (GTA V).
