Wouldn't necessarily boost your FPS, it's possible, but I'm pretty sure it's negligible difference.

btw, with 980m, will i7 4710 MQ hinder the performance of 980m ?

No it won't. 4710HQ barely hinders the performance of 980M SLI, so no way in hell it'll bottleneck a single 980M.

Thanks, now I need to figure out how to get some decent frame rates in Star Citizen. I'm finding it hard to believe I need to tweak settings to get decent frame rates... Anyone here having fun with the Alpha on their Sager?

They have done that so that when it launches it takes advantage of high end PC hardware.

Thanks for this. One more question then; am i right in thinking 8gigs of ram is all you could realistically need if the most intensive thing you do is game ? Its not worth paying an extra £50 for 1-2fps. Maybe streaming ?

My personal opinion is it is enough for gaming at the moment.
Upgradable later from other online store, where its a lot cheaper.
For video editing or music production or other demanding tasks I would choose 16 gigs..

    Small issue with my p170sm-a:

From day one, (it's day four now) the creative xfi mb3 software tells me, there's no supported hardware.
Tried to uninstall realtech driver and reinstall from driver cd, newer drivers from clevo website and the newest from realtech website..
Also tried newer version of creative software..
Didn't get it to work.. Any experiences?

Remove both and install the realtek and creative at the same time (realtek first).

It's likely changes have rendered the current software incompatible.

What program is making it switch back and forth? Manually set that to IGP if you can. Remember though the OS is still beta so driver issues and kinks will be there.

    HI,

Is there any possibility that the TPM module is not activated on a Clevo P170SM-A?
My reseller is multicom in Norway, and according to their website this is a factory option, as well as the fingerprint scanner and kensignton lock. And as I have the last two I can only assume the TPM came with them along.
If I am wrong, how can I check if it is installed or not on it?
I installed last night the latest prema bios I found on prema's website, hoping that this will fix the issue, but I cannot find any setting in BIOS regarding this.
    Any suggestions?

No it should not go above 85°C. Your temp is too high. Try to repaste it. If repasting not fixed it, you might have a bad heat sink.

I just reinstalled my windows and download all new drivers , somehow the temp is hover like 85-87 when usage is 98-99% ( and it's quite damn hot in Aussie ), so it's ok to play for long-term with 85 C ? my driver is 344.75 btw

It's ok if its in a hot room, a repaste with some good thermal paste will help a little.

    Hello

I have just received my P170-SM with a 980M GTX.

I am running Windows 8.1 and I can't change the screen brightness which is stuck at maximum and quite high... I have seen a few people having this issue with older P170 and ATI GPUs... I have installed the Hotkeys driver but it didn't solved it. Any ideas?

    Thank you

I also just own my p170sm-a 980M like 2 weeks ago. Make sure that the moment u just installed windows 8.1, without installing any driver yet, the screen brightness should work ( my laptop brightness works right after fresh windows 8.1 install ) . Otherwise, u may get defected one.

Hi folks! My 170SM-A 980 is being shipped Monday. Under distance selling regs I can return without reason within 10 days, the problem is, I'm going abroad on Friday so I'm going to have 2 days max to test it before I have to live with it (can't take a monster box in my luggage).

Can anyone suggest what benchmarks I should run and the temps that I should expect after any given time? I don't want to stress the new machine to within an inch of its life, just some basics to be sure I haven't been sent a machine that 10 other people have already sent back because it was melting or throttling.

3dmark Vantage with extreme settings works very well but does require owning it, other than that do some heavy sessions on games like metro last light/Battlefield 4. So long as there is no throttle you are good.

Thanks Meaker - I read so many things about BF4 being broken on release that I skipped it until it was fixed. Is it fit for purpose now? It's hard to penetrate through the EA $'s on gaming sites to know, and just about any forum these days is filled with angry gamers :)

Do you or any other kind soul on this thread have (say) Witcher 2, Bioshock Infinite or Crysis 2 that would be willing to fire up one, play it for 10 mins on ultra++ and post some temps and frames? It doesn't have to be on a 980M 4710MQ. It's just that where I live the Clevo forums are inhabited by dozens of people looking to find what can be loosely be translated as the 'jewel cpu' (?) which I gather is one which responds flawlessly to oc'ing plus has low temps both naturally and oc'ed. To find this 'jewel' of theirs, they (ab)use distance selling regs to return as many machines as required until they get it. I'm pretty sure my p170 has a decent chance of being a jewel hunters' reject. Which is no problem if it's only 'not perfect', but a disaster if it's survived a week of amateur and risky oc'ing 'for teh lulz'. #firstworldproblems

BF4 is working well for me. They fixed the game. If you play MP at ultra setting, game can stress your CPU/GPU to maximum level.

BTW use hwinfo app to monitor your temperature. Start the app with sensor only mode.

I would suggest you look at your own more than others, is it throttling? Are the fans ramping up smoothly, are the temps at least 5-10C below throttle at stock when pushed.

I am doing my annual Windows 7 reinstallation today. After updates I have 31 software packages to install. I use my laptop for work and it gets a tad slow after a year (this time it has only been a few months). I get a major update to my software in December so I do a reinstall at that time.

What a life sucking experience. Ha!

You could spend a little less and get 1866mhz modules which provide all the performance. You could also try overclocking your current ones.

Interesting, I never thought about it, but how about the voltage?

The Hyper X modules have lower voltage (1.35v) compare with my current corsair (1.5), I thought it could help somehow in the overall system performance, beside use less energy.

EDIT: funny enough, on amazon the 1866mhz modules cost a bit more than the 2133mhz..

My P150SM with Crucial 1866 16GB kit OC'ed to 2133 without a issue. It only required a little tweak, but Corsair 1866 failed to OC (even after setting loose timings). Almost all DDR3L 1.35v ram can work with 1.5v, but the thing is you need to find the right memory kit and then little time to mess with settings.

Since the difference in price its not that much, I'll go directly for the 2133mhz modules at this point, thanks for the tip. :D

I noticed straight from crucial you could get some fairly cheap 1866mhz modules that's why I mentioned it. But there is no harm in getting faster modules just no real benefit.
