the underside of the 157sm does look better for thermal dynamics.
do all the 157 models come with those atrocious red garnishings on the side?

Yes the 180W PSU is more than adequate at stock clocks, and overclock is adequate for *most* games, just some heavy GPU titles like Dirt 3, Crysis 3, BF3 will hit the PSU limit with overclock.

Do all CLEVO's use the same type of power plug with all there laptops?
( the tip that plugs directly into the laptop)
Only asking to see if P177SM 330W power brick woukd fit the P157SM and allow more head room to OC.

No, the 17" machines have a 4-prong plug where the 15" have the single barrel connector with 5.5OD x 2.5ID mm connector.

wait so is the chassis of the 157sm different from the 150sm or are they basically the same shell?

No since the 157 also has a 7mm ssd bay and is a bit thicker.

The underside also looks like it has more holes, maybe giving better thermal dynamics. Is this correct?

Aren't you done with your review yet?...lol
Kidding but I'm down to 2-3 choices and your review would help a great deal as to which way to go.
    Side note:
Any higher rated W PSU's known that are compatible with this laptop?

From what I've seen between the P150SM and P157SM from reviews to pictures and even the official Clevo P1xxSM manual, there is no much difference between the two. But here is some screenshots I took from the P1xxSM owner manual from the Clevo website:

    Model A = P150SM
    Model B = P157SM
    Model C = P151SM
    Model D = P170SM
    Model E = P177SM

If you want to view the manual with all specifications and pictures etc yourself, go here -> CLEVO - Download And under the user manual, select "P150SM/P151SM/P157SM/P170SM/P177SM Series".

Also really want an answer on the red vents too.
Silver or black vents would have been 10x better.

The answer is No. The P150SM / P157SM / P151SM / P170SM / P177SM do not have the red markings on near the vents. The Clevo laptop that has those extra red panels on the side is the Clevo P375SM as pictured below:

Apparently you can simply disconnect it. Although, to do so, you have to remove the keyboard.
I would shoot a quick email to your reseller/builder and ask them to do it for you.

    thanks for the pics xjulzxk.

the 157sm clearly has the better placed vents. the 'additional' one is right where the gpu sits and the feet do not obstruct the fan's airflow as was the complaint in the hm and em series.

it just makes the choice betweem the two all the more intriguing. i personally prefer the more business like, sleeker look of the hm style chassis but the added benefit of better placed vents and a slightly thicker chassis (despite the touchpad and gamer looks) of the 157, seems equally compelling.

I've personally ordered two P150SM's myself with GTX 780M's in each of them. I noticed the difference with the vents as well on the underside, but realistically I've also played and experimented with over a dozen laptop coolers and have always stuck with the Zalman NC2000 and NC1000 coolers, they are the only ones that I've actually seen a difference with. Realistically between the P157SM and P150SM it's quite clear that that one extra vent over where the GPU sits will help. Won't help drastically but will allow slightly more airflow than the P150SM (but we are really talking about such a minor difference here, heat rises, it does not drop down).

Another advantage to the P150SM compared to the P157SM is the whole front part of the laptop is a lot more raised from the ground, whereas the majority of the P157SM is a lot more flat. If you've used laptops since forever like me, then one key thing you would of noticed that's critical to laptop cooling is making sure there is plenty of room and space underneath.

And hell, if you are really desperate enough, it's just a plastic underside cover. Cut your own hole in it and super glue or melt on some thin wire mesh and finish it with a nice rubber 0-ring seal. There's your new air vent ;)

The other advantage to the P150SM over the P157SM is the rear vents are more vertical whereas the P157SM has horizontal rear vents. So i'd easily be able to use an additional fan cooler on it if I wanted to. Example of the additional fan cooler I'm speaking about are these:

Besides the Zalman NC1000 and NC2000 laptop tray coolers, I would also recommend the above coolers for vertical based vents. The one extra fan makes a world of difference in my experience.

Running battery test on P157SM right now. Power saver, 10% brightness, wi-fi on, four tabs in firefox auto-refresh 1 to 15 minutes. Been an hour and less than 20% battery gone. If it continues, it should be able to exceed 4.5 hours!

    @julz

from the looks of it the 150sm's chassis looks like the exact replica of the hm/em chassis many of us already have. as such, its disadvantages have been discussed in threads over a year old in nbr. the 157sm's underside addresses on of the primary complaints of the design. also the new heatsinks most probably address the loose fitting ones of the hm/em models. also backreading the hm/em threads will let you know that propping up the back of your laptop with a bottlecap or a bigger rubber foot will give you better temps than any cooler could.
but these are old topics. im happy to know that clevo actually listened to feedback and made the appropriate changes, aesthetics notwithstanding. the 150sm is still a great chassis, and imho it just looks sleeker too.

    great specs.
if you have time please do a review of the system when it arrives.
as much as i like the thermal changes in the 157sm, the 150sm is still my preferred platform.

    hello.
i bought the sager NP8250-S and i am thinking to add the extra copper cooling my self. the NP8250-S got some ventilation under the GPU and CPU on its back cover so i think with a cooling pad cooler under that. the copper cooling will work . or what do you think guys, thanks

4hrs 36mins battery life, and that's a fairly aggressive test with LCD on 100% @ 10%, four firefox tabs open and cycling 1 to 15 minutes with some flash playing, wi-fi on of course, and SSD's ON for half the battery life duration.

trying to find a way to better cool the gpu and cpu on my new sager NP8250-s.. i had a Toshiba qosmio x305. it was my first gaming laptop. heat burned the gpu to hell. i need a good way to cool gpu on sager so this does not happen again. any one got any good ideas?

    thanks.

the 8250-s does seem to have a more robust thermal design than the past two 15 inch iterations from sager (hm/em series).
i always prop up the back of my laptop and use fn+1(max fans) when playing intensive games. i find that propping up my back a 1" rubber foot has improved my temps by 8-10c (or more i cant exactly remember), much much more than using a cooler master sf-19 which i sold. i also have hw monitor on to check temps after gaming or midgame during warmer days. i also regularly clean the insides with compressed air and do a repaste yearly.
i live in a tropical country and thus am very concerned about ambient temps and internal heat build up.

i just checked out the SF-19 and it looks a pretty decent cooling pad. fans go up to 2500 RPM and that is amazing. what i am thinking of is to apply extra copper heat sinks ... but as people are saying on the forums applying extra heat sinks will just create hot spots. using a good cooling pad that can throw in as much air as possible on the extra copper heat sinks will cool them down and overall lower the cpu and gpu temps. but i am still not sure if that is going to work.

    sorry for my bad English.

Speaking from my experience with the 8150, I don't think you will need more fans as the internal fans of the machine are quite powerful. Having too many powerful will just create turbulence.
What the internal fans need though is more space to operate efficiently, and it's the reason why propping your laptop gives better results than even the most powerful of coolers.

This question is currently being looked into in a few different threads here on NBR. As or right now it appears that trackpad is tied into the keyboard lighting as a whole via electrical connection instead of a controller. If that's the case, it's only possible to shut them off independently if you physically break that connection. Definitive answer has not been found yet and I've also asked our production guys to look into it.

    Hmm...
Honestly, the trackpad light is the only thing that really bothers me about the new design.
Clevo really should have made it optional.
Anyway, I placed an order for an NP8250-S today over at XoticPC.
Hopefully the payment issues are sorted out. :confused2:

    Mythologic,
Since you are not a Sager dealer and build your Clevos from barebones with your own custom BIOS, Firmware, Mods, Hardware, etc., is there any chance you can offer a 240w PSU option instead of the default Clevo 180w PSU? Even if you aren't an overlcocker, there are reports that the 180w PSU may be inadequate if you max out your internal components. Intense gaming and beefy internal hardware is really pushing the 180w PSU. Of course, if you plan to OC, you're pretty much SOL unless you mod your own PSU. I really don't understand why Clevo didn't go with a 240w by default. Scratching my head on this one. This is perhaps the biggest issue holding me back from pulling the trigger on a P150/157SM purchase. I'm still undecided between this and a GT60, though at least the MSI uses the turboboost off the battery to overcome its 180w PSU when needed.

Our problem isn't offering it, although the internals are really setup for anything more than 230, our issue is that you simply can't BUY a power supply with the right ends, nor can you have it built because of the high wattage the barrel end that we have is only rated to basically 180W of power, anything over that causes a lot of heat, and would never get out of regulatory places (The UL would never certify such a thing) so thats our real reason that we can't offer a bigger PSU, is thats just too much power on one pin, it would be kind of a fire hazard :p

Thanks! This really explains a lot. So the problem really is more an engineering issue with Clevo. The power pin they implemented in the design for the PSU is just inadequate (at least in regulation) for anything over 180w. So if you mod a 240w PSU, you do it at your own risk. Though I suspect the pin IRL will probably be okay up to a 240w modded PSU, as far as heat, but it's still a safety issue based on UL regulation; and therefore, you can't do anything about the problem officially due to liability and legal matters. This falls on Clevo completely underrating the end user requirements of a maxed out system. If I do go with a P157SM, I'll have to do the mod myself. I don't mind doing it; but still, this is a bummer and hassle for most folks. Clevo should definitely be made aware of this issue by resellers and dealers.

Hi, I'm graduating this year and hoping to continue into computer science in university, so for a graduation present my parents and extended family are getting me a laptop (price range is like $1299 before taxes). So im going to need a laptop that is decently spec'd to handle the programming and the like, as well as have a decent battery life to get through a typical 5-7 hour university note taking day. Right now im looking at either the new MSI GE60 or the Sager/Clevo P151SM. Would either one be able to make it through a 7hour day of note taking and computing with minimal time at a wall socket?

Thats pretty much the long and short of it =) And yes we have sent that feedback to Clevo, and we'll see as time goes forward, but at least you can OC the processor on ours without sucking down too much more voltage, now that big ole GPU.... :p

Honestly I would look at something closer to one of the W series laptops as it will have less power draw while still having significant CPU power to compile etc, and some do come with decent discreet GPU's so you can game on them also (W350ST, etc)

i also dont like that shiny piece of plastic on the 157sm they used to replace the speaker grille.
all in all, the older chassis' looks is such a win for me, they could have just molded a new underside cover (since that thing is detachable) to accommodate the new vents and foot placements.

but i guess clevo just wants to go mainstream gamer design with the 157sm. the added features to me like twin msata ports for raid dont mean much imho, especially after reading articles like the one from tomsharware basically concluding that ssd's in raid 0 give nothing more than better benchmark scores but no real world performance benefits.

in the end, i think the deciding factor for most people here is whether that new chassis can lower temps significantly by 10c or more. from what i see, it could be closer to a 6-8c temp difference. cant wait to get those thermal comparisons between these two models.

how much is the ave price difference between the two models?
