Just got this sucker about 2 hours ago, drives and memory in, winderz installed, up and rockin.
10875 CPU 8core 16 thread
32 gigs 2666 (yes it it supposed to be 2933 if I remember right). Will address that later.
1 TB evo+ nvme as C, 512 gig kingston nvme as D, 1tb evo ssd as E.
Has a AX201 wifi and a bunch of other bells and whistles.

My last unit (MSI = POS) had a 9750 with same ram and drives....it was not even close to as fast or nice as this thing is.
Build quality is killer, nice keyboard, nice screen (144hz) driven by a RTX 2060, not bad audio, very solid chassis.

Will add as I get used to it and get everything tweaked....can't exactly use old images from a different lappy now can I ?
BTW, yes it's running LTSC, working on all the updates and junkola now.

Oh, strangely enough, not 15 heatpipes....only 4, 2 for cpu and 2 for gpu...but they are HUGE. I'll have to measure but they are like 5/8" wide...possibly more. 2 fans but they have tons of blades.
Very different setup but it's running cool and fast.
Haven't had time to do much with it yet but *allegedly* the cpu will boost to 5.1ghz 1 core.
We'll see.

 

Sounds awesome. I have a pb71df-g on order which look to be the same except with the 2070 super. I'm curious on how your thermals work out. And what you think of the fan noise. I'm upgrading from a 13.3" w230ss to this beast. Shame no amd version.

Can you use tdp down on the cpu if u wanted to? I'm tempted limit the chip a bit for cooler thermals.

Quick question...how the hell do I get "computer" or "my computer" back on the desktop ? I'm missing it and can't for the life of me remember how.

Thanks for the GPU-Z. Can you run 3DMark Fire Strike with HWiNFO monitoring active? The Fire Strike graphics score and GPU power shown in HWiNFO should verify whether it is the 115W version or not.

Yeah it's pretty featured, it should be hosted in a variety of places though.

 

I just did these, will try maybe tomorrow with hwinfo.
Pretty much everything out of the box with zero tweaks, dunno if it's good, bad, or pathetic.
The fans spooled up but were not loud nor was it annoying or irritating

 

OK here ya go, looks like it maxed at about 82 watts....unknown if it'll go higher at this point.
I did see that the cpu wattages are unlocked and definitely has a downclock setting for 35 watt.
Interestingly the monitor is a LG Phillips with 144hz and 346.54 hz ability ?!?

 

Yeah definitely the 80W version then. It seems that the slower/lower bandwidth GDDR6 in the 2060 refresh is dragging its performance down into the 1660 Ti range.

 

How long does the battery last?

 

Dunno and probably won't be finding out for at least 6 months.
You don't buy a 17" notebook to lug it around much, it's what they call a desktop replacement.

 

Weight rather than size would deter me from moving it around. As you can see in my sig I have a hefty DTR which I move around in my house. I'm looking for a complementary mobile solution for work and play, but I do like to work on a 17inch screen. It's perfectly possible to have a powerful thin & light 17incher as the new tongfang models prove. It just needs a powerful battery.

 

It's still the same tradeoffs that's it's always been. I have a 13.3" that I had the misfortune of working on for two weeks while sequestered for work. By the end I talked myself into a 17" as the next machine no matter what.

Just got my tracking number for my new clevo PB71DF-G. I should have it Friday. I believe it's the same as this one w just a 2070 super. I'm curious to see how it will stack up compared to my old d900f monstrosity.

For a 17 it is *relatively* thin and light.
I don't even own a scale but I'd guess about 5lbs and add maybe 6-8 ounces for power brick (smallest 180 watt power brick I've ever seen and I own 3 and have used dozens).
I have the larger of the swiss army backpacks and doubt it would hinder me at all when wearing it and a 17 fits nice and snug in it so it won't slide around (it's the blue one, maybe 7-8 years old?).
Yea, the backpack has held up extremely well.

 

That's one thing I'm worried about. Mine comes with a 230watt brick. I'm hoping it's smaller than my older ones

The bricks have shrunken slightly. It is probably the same as what came with the N970TF and NH58AF1.

 

You can always mod a dell one lol. That brings back memories.

 

The brick is the same size as a iphone 5 but about 1 inch thick...it's seriously small.

Well, here we are.
Ran firestrike in performance mode instead of entertainment mode (hey, I didn't know it was there mmmk?).

 

Is the GPU power limit higher in Performance Mode?

 

To be honest, I don't know. There's this utility called "Control Center" that was on the driver disk, that's where I found the "modes".
It also controls fan speeds, keyboard lighting, and "flexikey" which can do keyboard macros and key swapping.
That's also why I posted the CPU wattage....which was 91'ish.

I'm still learning this thing, the bios/uefi is funky as hell and I haven't played in there nearly as much as I'd like.
I'll get some pics of the bios at a later point and post them....it's definitely not your normal and does warrant showing.
There's a name they call it and it certainly isn't american megatrends or anything I'm used to.

If you post a screenshot of HWiNFO GPU sensors section after running Fire Strike in performance mode, the GPU Power sensor should tell you what the GPU power limit is.

 

Well, if you look at the last screenie you'll see total system draw was 190'ish and the cpu was eating 92'ish.
Doesn't leave much more than about 80 for the gpu considering the fans were at full speed and the mobo takes some, account for normal loss and inefficiencies....that leaves about 80.
I honestly don't relish running it again without a repaste and undervolting.
You can see the cpu was hitting 95 and it went into thermal throttling.
Just smoked a cpu in a MSI GP759SE leopard a month ago or so and have no desire to dump ANOTHER 2k cash after being denied a warranty from Computer Upgrade King (read: douchebags).
No I did not buy this unit from them, but I did buy the MSI from them.
So yea, in honest reality I'm into this laptop for about 4k since I've bought 2 and only have this one to show for it.

 

You cant undervolt a 10th gen chip. If you figure out a way let me know. It's normally disabled now. That's why I asked you aboutblimit the chip to 35w for lower temps. It's all u can do now

I just went from a 13.3" W230SS to a 17 " Sager NP8378F2 (CLEVO PB71DF2-G)

I'll check for an owners lounge for it in a bit. Just trying to download some stuff to get it going before I have to leave for work. So far I really like it. Obviously it's a big difference in size. One thing I'm happy to report is you can undervolt the 10TH Gen Intel chip with Sagers. I'm running a -70millivolt setting already. Stress testing the cpu had it max at 70C roughly 3.6GHz. These are quick and dirty numbers for right now. I haven't really done much with it except get the backups started and such.

Intel XTU seems to allow voltage changes but with adaptive voltage it's difficult to verify.
Anyone know how to be certain the change is taking place ?
XTU didn't balk at all, took the settings and saved it, you'd think Intel would be the 1st to scream "you can't do that"
I have it set to 065V down and everything seems happy. I don't want to set it to a static voltage because then you won't get boost when it needs it.

Your lappy looks just like mine except the hinges are slightly different and my power button is on the left not right...and my track pad is dead center as yours seems skewed left a tad but it could just be the picture angle.

 

The track pad is definitely skewed to the left. I've noticed typing on the keyboard is off to the left too. It's good for gaming, but it's a bit rough getting used to for typing. It's a bit of an adjustment.

I started a new owners lounge for it. That why I stop hijacking your thread. I've put some pictures of the internals along with some benchmarks to start.

 

I haven't truly messed with the undervolt much. What I recommend is doing a stress test with an without the undervolt in intel XTU. You can keep track of the boost speeds and if it hits the throttling limits. I realize that with all the down clocking built into the 10th gen chip it's rough to figure out what's going on. The w230ss was easy to see a big increase in boost speeds compared to not running the undervolt.

 

So I played with undervolting and testing to see if it made a difference. It's really tough to tell. This chip is way overpowered for a laptop so it either hits 70C thermal limit to start throttling power way too quick to matter. I would def say it helps. I saw 5-6 degrees off the max temp while it was power limited. The boost frequency was slightly less than then when it's not undervolted. Strange behavior though.

With a undervolt it will likely turbo for longer but yes temps are not likely to drop.

 

You can see the benefit obviously when you run benchmarks, but I'm really not sure of the point except for bragging rights. Crummy way of trying to keep parity with AMD. It makes for real ugly behavior. The turbo limit is set to allow the CPU to draw 107W for up to 48 seconds or u til it hits it first thermal limit of 70C where it chokes it off and limit current. I like the way the fans slowly ramp up and down but w that behavior they lag waaay behind the thermals on the cpu. All it does is make the machine sound like a jet engine. You need to set it to max fans to have any chance of getting a good boost. The fans are way too loud then.

Does anyone know the settings for power saving mode? It doesn't seem to limit the CPU in anyway.

Performance mode. CPU turbo boost to 107w
Entertainment mode CPU LIMITED TO 45w
Quiet mode CPU limited to 15w.
Power saving doesn't seem to limit the CPU at all from what I saw plugged in. 15w on battery only?

I mean you can also look at it as getting the most out of the hardware without tweaking it yourself. It is technically the ideal way for turbo to act.

 

I wonder if we've put way too much thought into the benchmarks that we read in reviews and the companies are forced to "chase the numbers" instead of optimizing the laptop for a better experience.

Ok from what I saw power saving mode limits the GPU to 80 watts and disables turbo on the CPU when plugged in. It doesn't have much of an affect on reducing fan noise though. It still runs the fans at a higher rpm than I would like for comfort.

 

That's more what the power profiles are supposed to be for like balanced and high performance.

 

How much do temps drop when you disable HT?

 

Depends on how much it was being used.

 

Not sure I understand. HT as in hyper threading? I haven't disabled it at all. I'm just trying to define the characteristics of the sager CPU power profiles for the new chip. The only thing that gets disabled would be turbo boosting.

My only change is a -100 millivolt under volt. That maybe dropped 5C off the peaks under current throttling conditions (with a corasponding loss in freq). It did allow the fans to go silent under most light load conditions so I'm happy w the trade.

Yup.
These 8core cpus are so crazy fast especially with the evo+ nvme's we are both running as primary drives.
Take a Koneigsegg Agera RS and down tune it 50 horsepower....can you tell the difference ?
It will still run hot and still be suicidal fast.

There is a bios setting for turning off hyperthreading but the only thing I really believe it would affect are those few programs coded to take advantage of it.
I don't think it will affect heat at all except for when running benchmarks made to stress it.
I guess I need to grab a copy of cinebench or something.
