I'm using laptops for online games since 6 years, there's no way you can do it well over wireless. Even with the best of the best setup there's always a small hic-up every once in a while that usually comes at the worst moment. If you are playing online cable is the way to go.
Still it shouldn't disconnect often, I usually get 1-2 disconnects per day but still for gaming that's 1 too many .
-
-
The key wll be to pinpointing the issue - the cause of wireless disconnects are notoriously difficult to diagnose!
My disconnects frequently, probably every 5-10 mins? I will do some more testing tonight and if I can't solve it, I'll have to call on help.
Petrov. -
I'm not getting disconnects, but I am getting very slow transfer rates, such as 1.0mpbs. My signal strength is fair to low though, could this be the issue? The router is a Netgear Rangemax G.
-
check your Wireless adapter's configuration.
make sure to disable Power Saving settings, set everything to Max Performance.
And set the Wireless to 802.11 G. -
-
Can anyone recommend a bag for this guy that'll work to carry a Zalman NC1000 as well?
Also, anyone try out a screen protector on this thing? -
I'll try your suggestions Goph. I can see how the Wireless G setting may help.
EDIT: Ok, I got the latest drivers from Intel's website. Apparantly windows update doesn't have them yet but my wireless is working much better now. I should have thought of that right off the bat because its the first thing I normally do when I am setting up a system. Update the connectivity drivers. I just thought this laptop being so new it would not be neccessary.

Alright Lads I ordered my Nexus (M860TU) from Kobalt tonight.
One of the guys at kobalt kinda told me to wait until he emails me about any sort of student advantages the might be able to offer me but i couldn't wait any longer every time i've went to order a laptop something has come up so i just ordered it.
Specs are pretty minimal but in a year or so i'll upgrade the warranty and the CPU and RAM for it. I just dont have the money now.
I cant wait till i get it. It's also my birthday which makes it an even better time to buy the Lappy/Beast/SexBox.
Specs are;
CPU: Core 2 Duo @ 2.4Ghz HD: 250GB 5400rpm
GPU: 9800M GTS
RAM: 2GB DDR3 (1 x 2GB card)
OS: Vista Home Premium 64 bit
So glad i decided to get this over the 2096 so much more potential for power.
I want to do lots of benchmarks so if there's aything you guys want (just ask and ill give it to ya's) including benchmarks on any games i can get my hands on.
I already have bioshock so that'll be my starting point.
Do any Kobalt owners have any idea how long i'll have to wait to get it. I know MrDJ and milcs waited the better half of a century for theirs. -
Congrats, nice system - you won't regret it!
Petrov. -
Micky, me and MrDJ had to wait exactly 22 days. They have started to clear the big backlog of orders they had, so hopefully yours won't take as long.
Your config looks great... this laptop is indeed amazing! -
ok,ill edit my post milcs
congratulations micky
it wasnt that long realy just felt like it. it was 17 days from when the money was taken from my account. if you compair that to alienware it took 6 weeks.
its well wort the wait.
edit: it was 22 days from the day of ordering and 17 days from when the money cleared.
you broken it yet milcs
edit:
just been out of the house for the first time in almost 6 weeks (yippee) and had a lovely greek meal.
now im back its time to game
testing out a few games ive never been able to play before.
me thinks its going to be a very long night. -
Does anybody know if the 'Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Card' would be compatible in this laptop, and if it would fit in the provided slot?
The cards dimensions are:
(H x W x D) = 1.75in x 2.35in x 0.19in
Card Information available at:

Nope.
The full length version on the left in this PDF fits perfect.

1) The dvd-rom drive doesn't open randomly... in fact it's pretty hard to open and requires repeated pressing. Maybe a blu-ray vs normal drive difference? I've resorted to ejecting dvds from explorer :/
2) Fan issues; mainly the notebook runs *too* quiet and the fans don't come on enough, or perhaps the gpu and cpus are kept too cool for them to come on. Bios fan mode of "continuous" results the fans in never coming on! No whine or anything; fan noise is very quiet (probably because it's not running high enough!)
3) HDD heat. 250GB 5400rpm Hitachi hard drive (rated for 55C), got up to 70C (at which point I shut down the system) *halfway* through a 200GB format. Ambient temperature was 23Cish (~74Fish, fairly cool for a sunny afternoon, but still somewhat of a warm day relative to other days).
I shut down the notebook and came back a few hours later (hd was 28C at startup). I ran SpeedSwitchXP, underclocking the CPU cores to half speed, and redid the ~90minute format... and it got up to 52C max. There are definite issues with fan control and/or cpus overheating the chassis, imo. I think this notebook will benefit a lot from undervolting and/or running the cpu underclocked when full power isn't needed (i.e. most of the time, for me).
No cooling pad (yet), and I'm considering a solid state drive and maybe vents on the underside. The plastic's pretty thick so that looks tough to do unless it's a professional job (crc machine). I don't think the HD models or sizes are an issue at all; fan control and inadequate cpu cooling likely are. -
From what i understand the cooling on the CPU is fine and it stays well within acceptable temps?
Also assuming i do get my laptop today it will have been 56 days from order to delivery on my laptop -
:S Just saw "1 OF 2 DAMAGED @27 " as current status when i tracked my order on the City Link website, any one able to shed light on what this might mean apart from more delays and annoyance for me?
If it is what it says and not something else i just have to pray its the laptop cooler or something.... -
Petrov. -

-
@Deathknight- Good luck. I hope all is well. I would give them a call just in case (to the delivery company)
@Tarentum- Check whether or not you are in Silent Mode. In Silent Mode, I've never heard the Fans coming on. It's really very quiet. It's really surprising. On normal mode, I can always hear the fans. But quite quietly. But they are there. (not the fans, but the air being circulated...)
Regarding CPU and GPU's temps... I think that it's really not necessary to undervolt it as it is.
- My CPU never goes above 60ºC (and this is after one hour of Orthos stress test).
- The GPU, never goes above 80ºC while gaming and the maximum I got was running the Furmark Stability test in which the GPU reached 88ºC. I then partially blocked the exhaust and it raised to 91ºC. Unblocked it and went back to 88ºC and stabilized there pretty fast.
In what concearns the HDD... If you haven't checked this thread, please do: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=292624
Apply that patch. With me, I went down 10ºC at idle. My HDD now idles at around 45ºC and can reach 56-57ºC under use.
@ioaniro- You have a great responsability... making a through comparison between the Nexus and the m15x! Hope you receive yours fast.
@MrDJ- haven't had much time to break it. But this thing is unbreakable... -
that does not sound good. 1 of 2 means one of the boxes has been damaged. lets just hope its not the notebook. i would get onto rock immediately and get them to ring city link.
fingers crossed for you De@thknight. -
Ye called City Link and they told me 1 of the 2 boxes is in Stafford because it was damaged and the other is being shipped to me today. i'm just praying that the laptop is the one being delivered today but knowing my luck i have a 99% chance of it being the laptop that is damaged and 1% that its not. I suspect the 2nd package is the notebook cooler i got. Who knows atm i can only pray!
Can't call Rock atm until i get home as i refuse to pay to call them on an 0845 number on a mobile. -
Yes, that's unlucky... I hope all will be well in the end and I really hope it wasn't the laptop... Good luck.
-
Thanks milcs, going to be spending my IT lesson in the afternoon constantly pressing refresh Atm i'm just praying and praying!!!
-
Me too mate... I really feel sorry for you. Luckly, after all the storm is over for you, you will find a nice sunny spot to just enjoy your M860TU and be happy.
Good luck and keep us posted,
M. -
@ Deathknight. That is an awful long time to wait for your laptop. If it was me; some heads would roll down at Rock. I'd probably eat someone!
Yeh i figured that when i ordered it would be after all the hustle and bustle because the m860tu was just out so i hope i get mine relatively soon. Next friday would be nice *hint hint* anyways i can't complain too much now.
Yeh i cant wait to get it.
Im gonna put some money away for a few essentials next month. Laptop bag, cooler etc -
I will milcs, atm Jack@ROCK is trying to find out from City Link the weight of the damaged parcel so that we know which one it is. I'm still hoping its the laptop cooler, can only wait and see
DK -
-
Well my Dad's just told me i have 2 boxes from Rock at home so maybe my luck is different after all?
-
Hope it wasn't the laptop box, broken in half?
Just jokes, I'm sure it will be all fine - it's not that easy to actually hurt a laptop through all that packaging and bubblewrap/foam.
Petrov. -
2/3 of the box is packing. The laptop is between some large amount of foam.
-
-
Milcs, any chance of just listing (+ maybe linking if your feeling nice) any drivers that i should be installing on the laptop once i get it?
-
Happy for your 2 boxes (that I hope are intact).
I didn't install anything on my Nexus yet. Its all stock.
Things I installed (very easy to find just by googling them):
HWmonitor (version 1.08)- Keep track of all your components' temperatures
Rivatuner- Gives you GPU clocks, temps and etc in a graphical way.
RMClock- CPU clocks and voltage (graphical view)
Furmark- GPU stress benchmarking
ATItools- GPU stress benchmarking
Primer95- CPU stress
Orthos- CPU stress
HDD tune- HDD performance analysis
AND, most important:
The patch for the Intel Data matrix storage (or whatever) to push down the HDD temperatures. There: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=292624
That's about all I've installed (appart from games). I haven't yet had a go with new GPU drivers, which I think are going to be the ones worth playing around with. Appart from that... if it comes pre-installed, you should be good to go.
GO HOME... Let us know how everything is looking. Good luck. -
Well its here
installing stock drivers atm then going to download the temp stuff and the HDD patch. No damage i could see to the boxes to city link error -
Congrats!
Let us know how it goes... -
I will HDD is at 56 before the patch, with the cooler, will see what its like with the patch
-
congratulations De@thknight. panic over
now enjoy.
dont worry i will be asking lots of questions as well when it come to loading patches and updating drivers. -
Ye milcs will never want to go on the forums again once we're finished with him
-
So 3 more nexus arrived and no new mini review? Shame on you guys .
-
Mines an xtreme 620 not a nexus
Installing the turbo memory drivers takes ages.... -
drivers already loaded on the Nexus
-
Hehe, btw how do you turn off the auto indexing in vista? i know its been said but can't remember where.
Thanks
DK -
There you go: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=166532
Follow that amazing guide and switch off everything you don't need.
My CPU is really whining a lot. The bluetooth solution seems to sort that out... but there's another whining (less audible) coming from the same region.
Regarding mini-reviews... I'm afraid I don't have the time now to do it, but I'll gladly answer whatever questions people might have.
When I have the time, I will put a mini review together! -
Dunt forget the Intel wireless patch! It seems to work for me.
-
Good to hear you got yours alright Deathknight.
What's this whining sound i've been hearing so much about on the forum is it that bad because I havn't ordered mine with the bluetooth module. I didn't think i would need it.
Am i gonna miss out without having it or can i just buy one online and install it myself? Im assuming it goes into one of the module things at the side? -
Daaaamn turning off auto indexing takes way to long
-
what do you guys mean by CPU whinning?
