What's the proper way to apply the thermal paste onto the GPU?
Seems the stock way is to throw a big wad of clay-like paste.
I thought the good stuff isn't clayish, but rather more paste-like and spread in a thin layer on the GPU and not overflow all around the cavity.

    Please advise.

For the heck of it, here are some codes etched on the GPU:
    16N3WT 0816A2
    NG3685.MOP
    G92-720-A2
The 0 above is a bit rubbed off, but looks like 720.

By "stock way" I mean, that from the manufacturer, they just drop a big mess of paste. But I'm not sure what quality they are using since it's all dry-clay-like right from manufacturer and not used for a day yet.
Shouldn't the thermal paste still be a thick paste (wet but not dry, just smooth) for a long time?

Crap.... now I'm worried about the thermal paste on the CPU.
I guess I should check on THAT too.

I'm looking for thermal paste suggestions basically. For both GPU and CPU while we're at it on this laptop in particular.

Thanks theriko. I pretty much knew that, but wasn't sure if things changed lately. I have Arctic 5 still, but I'll look for mx-2 or ozc freeze since I guess they are newest.
    Thanks again!

I can't believe they put some cheapo paste on mine. *shakes head in disbelief*

The stock thermal paste come pre applied to the heatsinks from clevo, so is a hell of a lot easier for the resellers than removing it and then applying some decent stuff.

Silent mode is switched by the A button above the keyboard.

This is running silent and power saver mode with no cooler... cold as/colder than ambient!

I just ordered the GTX 280M from RJTech for my Clevo and finished setting up Windows Seven x64 RC1 (7100). Once I get the GPU next week I'm going to mod the hell out of the heatsink and flash a nice OC on it. With most of my finals done, I now have the time to bum around and really tinker around with my notebook. See you next week!

Anybody interested in a 9800M GTX for $350?

I'd be interested in your outcome
    Here's my wish list:
I have a 9800M GT and am tempted for the 280M. (I guess I have to update my Bios again though)
    I want an SSD drive
Just got Win7 but I'm on the fence.

I was also tempted to get the 280M but than I read rumours that Nvidia will be realising some 40nm mobile GPUs in the coming month. So I will wait a little.

That would be a good thing for us in the next few months. Nevertheless, I would still be very happy with the final g92.

Would be nice to have a timeline of upcoming releases so that we can time things out. If a 40nm is coming out in a few months, then that would be very good. Hopefully DX11 hardware to match Win7.

If manufacturers gave out complete timelines for when they were going to release every product, then there'd be never ending cycle of waiting for the next best thing and nothing would be purchased.

I noticed it too. It is on the right side starting around the "y" key and getting worse till it stops around the Enter Key. It never really bothered me but now I'm going to pop my keyboard and see what gives. there must be a hole in that area under the keyboard.

    I took the plunge and installed Win7 RC1 64bit.
It's pretty good if it weren't for the constant freeze.
I re-installed 4 times. Same thing happens. Just mouse freeze and everything frozen with no error. I have to do a reboot. Even froze prior to getting into the desktop once, while entering the PC name on the install.

Safe mode with networking seems fine though.
I'm using dual boot on a new partition. Still freezes after it does the Windows Updates.
Device driver shows two unknown devices. Is there some chipset drivers I should install for Win7? Maybe update my bios again?

    Thanks in advance

The latest Intel chipset drivers for Vista x64 also work just fine with Seven x64. Whenever I clean install a new OS on my machine, I also get a single unknown device that Windows cannot auto load from my drivers CD. That device is the infrared sensor (ITECIR). You have to manually install it from your driver CD.

Hello everybody! I'm new here. I Want to know something about my laptop Clevo M570TU. I bought it November 2008 with a 9800M GTX. I can upgrade it by a 280M GTX? Format MXM is same? And about motherboard?

    Thanks a lot.

Welcome to the NBR forums. :)

yes you can upgrade it to the GTX 280M.

I would not recommend it since you will only gain 10-13% performance (from your current 9800M GTX).... so its not very bang for the buck.

Did you get your laptop from clevo.fr ?

I am just curious, cause I am also thinking of upgrading to the 280M, but in EU is not that easy to get one.

you can order the videocard from other European vendors if Clevo.fr doesnt want to sell it.

You can get the 280M now in EU for 400 euros and a bit. The price of RJtech plus VAT plus transport plus the bank transfers and all that will probably be more expensive. As far as I know, we just have to wait a couple of weeks until the 280M will become more available and cheaper in EU as well.

    I'm stumped.
My computer freezes in Vista now. At first I thought it was just Win7 (as I explained earlier), but this is not the case.
I got my laptop back Monday after the manufacturer replaced my faulty Video card. Worked fine up until Friday when I put Win 7.
Must be coincidence. I think they put a faulty video card. Its the only explination. My memory tests fine.
    Very strange.

Did you format the hard drive before installing vista? If not there could be win7 files that are left behind.

I created a separate partition to install Win7. I was dual booting.
So technically, my Vista should be untouched. Or am I wrong?
I deleted the Win 7 partition and I now have one large partition again as before.
Problem is, Vista freezes and no errors. No freezes in the Bios (I left it on overnight) and no freezes in the Windows Memory Diagnostic (which showed no memory errors, and ran for a few hours).

I'm thinking that the new GPU they recently re-installed is faulty and that they gave me a refurbished one? The temps seem normal (47-49c degrees), so it's not overheating. One time.... I was even able to run 3dMark6 right through, and when it ended, it froze. But usually I freeze within 5 min of bootup.

I'll try booting in safe mode and let it sit to see what happens.
    I'll try lowering resolution too.
Any other tests I can try to pin this down?

I tried lowering resolution, and I still freeze.
I've been sitting in safe mode w/networking and so far, no freeze for the past hour or two. I've been going online, poking in and out of stuff, and even did a screensaver preview for a while (the one that works is Windows Logo and 'photos' since they both don't require direct3D in safemode).
    Perhaps there's a problem with direct3D?

I have the latest nvidia drivers. I started freezing with v.185.81, but, this driver worked fine on Mon and Tues last week. So I installed the newer v.185.85... but this freezes as well. Perhaps I can rollback to prior 185.81 and see.
For all I know, it might not even be the GPU, but I want to pin it down.

I guess your card is screwed. I could suggest taking it out and putting it back into the MXM slot, try to make it fit in as tight as possible.

    Thanks Blacky.
    It looks nice and snug.

I just put driver v.7675 from the manufac site, but these drivers freeze me too.
I only get it to work in bios or safe mode. I guess anything that doesn't enable full GPU features works.
It's the only thing I can guess is busted.

Oh well, time to email the manufacturer for a 2nd RMA.

I had a similar issue with my card. But under OC of the memories. The problem got solved after I took the card out and plugged it back in. But I plugged it in really tight.

This is why I suggest to you to do the same. It is a small chance it will solve the problem, but it doesn't hurt to try.

I ran checkdisk several times. But the one that lets me schedule within Vista and checks while rebooting. I didn't have to boot to dos to run it, since I CAN manage to perform some tasks if I'm quick and lucky enough.
    HD seems fine.
Strange how things work in safe mode though.
I also tried connecting to external monitor and hitting fn+F2 to switch off the LCD and just use external, but this will still result in a freeze.

I'm afraid to take out the GPU since they put stickers over the screws as if they are begging me to rip them.

I'm thinking about changing the CPU in my Sager np5796 from P8400 (2.2Ghz, 3mb cache) to a T9550 (2.6Ghz. 6mb cache). The new CPU would cost $205, do you think its worth it? Would I gain noticable performance increase?

not worth it at all for 400MHz.

that money can be put into getting a T9800 or T9900... or even better a mobile quad-core CPU.

I strongly advise you yo get a T9600 @ 2.8 Ghz. Very good price/performance ratio.

Actually for me, moving from the 2.4 to 2.8 made a noticeable difference and FPS in WiC for example improved by 20%. Depends what games you play.
