So modifying using your guide, doesn't invalidate the signature of the BIOS right? So no flasher is needed then?
Edit: i read the answer above and it's a yes. No flasher needed. Going to look into the tutorial :)

Yep, no flasher was needed but even with Dsanke bios i didn't need. So i cannot tell you if it will invalidate signature or not. But i could install it like an update.
I advise always to have a programmer and i even have some bios chip. We never know^^

A quick question: I have a P870DM-G here with an i5-6600k and from what I understand I should be able to change it to the i7-8700k or even i9-9900K, correct? With what kind of clock speed might I get away with when I want to keep the stock heatsink? I would think that I should not really hope for something like 4.6 GHz on all 8 cores but maybe 4.2 or 4.4 GHz?

no this is a physical limit of the component. the vrm is too small for stock frequency of the 9900k and the 9900 the limit is for every 8 core CPU LGA1151

the 9900k emits so much heat to 4.4 that the vrm are throttle a are heatsink that is not efficient enough. the 8700k is a much better choice see a 8086k if have done a madness
Dont upgrade you laptop with 9th gen... only if you need 128Go ram

Thanks for your answer, looks like I do not even need the k-models then as the normal turbo clock will already be more than the system could sustain.
Or are there limitations with undervolting with the regular models that still make the k models the better choice?

Yes of course ! The problem is the current " the better choice " is the 8700k but if you want a i9 9900 or 9900k(f) you need limited the current to 138A max because the vrm of the board delivry max 140 A in labolatory

Ok, so only looking at K-models now for undervolting.

The 8700k and the 9700k are priced almost identical, looks like two additional cores would beat hyperthreading as long as I am happy with "only 4.2 or 4.4 Ghz speed?

Or are there other advantages to the 8700k over the 9700k that I am missing?

Edit: 4.2 or 4.0 on 8 cores would be fine of course when 4.4 causes issues with too much heat, I don't want to fry that chassis - maybe something like 4.9, 4.9, 4.6, 4.6, 4.4, 4.4. 4.2, 4.0 for all cores.

Why are they less powerful in gaming, because of the limited maximum clock speeds and because they overheat the system more?

Only because of the limited maximum clock speeds. in gaming the most important is high frequency but the difference of the 8700k and the 9700k or 9900k the gain is 2 to 5 fps max....

Probably not as extensive as you - with 128 GB you must be using a bunch of virtual machines! Me I only use two or three at most.
Still some good food for thought, thanks!

It seems people forget... None 9900K will need default voltage.
Lower voltage will help on the total power draw. A huge difference between default voltage vs. a nice undervolt. More like 45-50 W less used power in full load with stock clocks. And a very good binned chips will do even better than this.

    Check the current...
    P=U.I
If you undervolt you dosent change the current
    This is electric physic

You're missing a lot of details here, since there is nothing static the P=U*I stays invalid.
But in short terms there is this thing where the voltage is high enough to saturate the shift level of these how to say internal mosfets where the signal transfer does not get too obscure in entire flow (symptoms like BSOD or freeze, the state of cpu gets lost).
So when you undervolt the CPU will drain less power and will slightly loose of it's processing speed (the delays are propagated through it's "processing fabric").

The current cap (reported) won’t stop you from run stock clocks if you have fixed the cooling(you said 42x all 8 cores at max). And none run P95 24/7 neither will all use Avx software. It’s for a reason Der8auer said use minimum 2 bin avx offset for their binned chips. Use it.

Regarding MSI. The added Power cap stop nice OC benching.

Anyone had experience with getting a different read with every attempt from a MX 25L6473F on a P775DM2MB-OD board? The software dump is consistent, but reading from hardware (as a belts-and-braces approach) gives me a different checksum and fails verification every time.

Make sure there is a perfect contact in the BIOS clip. Brush the pins of it a tiny bit and carefully. Most likely it's reading the BIOS bad because of the contacts in the clip. Had the same happen to my bios at obsidian-pc

Hmm. I have a brand new clip and the reader worked fine with the old mainboard (different EEPROM). I tried brushing the pins of the clip, and the legs of the chip without success so far. Asking around the local area (Austin, TX), it doesn't seem like anyone with a shop wants to help me with this using their known-good equipment (again, so far)

Yes, it does support it, but cooling that monster of a CPU will give you problems. TDP is significantly higher compared to even the 9900K, and those already require some magic magic (and delidding) to keep under control.

    This one :

KeeYees SOP8 SOIC8 Test Clip for EEPROM 25CXX / 24CXX with CH341A 24 25 Series EEPROM Flash Bios USB Programmer

On the basis of equivalence for the EEPROM, it seems to read consistently multiple times using the Gigadevice GD25LQ64 setup but I’d welcome input in case that might not be appropriate

Just to follow up on this, both the MXIC 25L6473F and the Gigadevice GD25Q64/GD25B64 appear to be 3.3 V devices. From what I can see, they are pin compatible and it seems like it would be reasonable to use the GD profile to read the MXIC chip (and it appears to work for reading).

I'd love a second opinion before I do something stupid, though, such as trying to write it.

EDIT : http://www.treetoptech.com/index.php/gigadevice-cross-reference-guide seems to give a decent overview.
