If this notebook is not photo-chopped, I am baffled. This design brings tears to my eyes. Excuse me as I throw up in the hallway.

I think both images look photoshopped particularly the last one of the lid. The image looks like it is in gray scale and has had bright red lazily painted onto it with the lasso tool. The image in the original post also looks like a gray scale image. Unfortunately I have a feeling this is for real...

Photoshopped or not I think it's the real design too....and we didn't expect something different from Dell, did we?

Now, I'm curioius how the new version of the Precision M90 would look like...wait... no... I'm actually scared.

No, no, I was there (the 80s, that is) and the stone-washed T-shirts were definitely classier than this thing is.

You guys are all missing the point ;)

This laptop is a huge improvement over previous models by virtue of its inclusion of a full numeric keypad.

How long did it take Dell to realize they could actually do this? Only 5 years? :D

Give them another 5 and they'll probably fix the design.

All of ya are right. Dell should've had a major seller on their hands if they based the design of the M1730 on the M1330 (more "metallic" feel, slot loading drive) but no, they had to screw it up so badly. I never saw this day coming... Toshiba outdoing Dell on the top-of-the-line notebook PC department? I would've laughed in your face if you told me this a year ago.

This could be a trick to lure out a real picture from Dell. Now when this ugly (fake) design is out, Dell must counter with something before everebody waiting for buying the 1730 instead buy something else (anything that does not need welding glasses).

Am I the only who thinks the Inspiron 1420/1520/1720 design is better looking than the toy-appearance of the XPS 1330?

The inspiron's look like an expensive Saabs or mercedes, and the XPS looks like some 16 year old riced up his Subaru.

The both look nice, but the XPS looks like someone was trying too hard to look "cool". Like fake spoilers on a front wheel drive car.

Amazinly bad reception here huh :)

This can't be the real thing. I imagine they would keep some themes from the newly released 1330 and carry over at least a few of the concepts.

No way, I can't believe this is the real thing. And who leaked/announced it, anyway? Where did it come from? There's no way that Dell could consider releasing something like that after the positive reaction to the 1330. Plus, I doubt that Dell would settle for offering the GeForce 8600 and 8700 in it, even if they are trying to get a successor to the 1710 out ASAP.

I'll bet whats left from my rep its NOT a fake .

What simply happened is that DELL excuted all the ideas it got from ideastorm -- in one laptop .

    - "We got many requests for carbon fiber casing ."
    - "Too expensive , give them fake carbon - no wait , at a second thought just paint it to look like FAKE carbon fiber ."

    - "Now what color should the keyboard be ?"
    - "Well white keyboards always look nice and elegant , why won't we put one in ?"
    - "Hmm , shouldn't we use white for the rest of the case then ?"
    - "Noooo , white goes with everything ."
    - "Isn't that black goes with -"
    - "Well we got black in the casing so it should go with the white in the keyboard ..."

    - "Marketing called and they want the XPS logo in large spacing ."
    - "How large ?"
    - "Where ever there is space , you put an XPS logo in ..."

    - "And don't forget our 80's style DELL logo so consumer will know who is responsible for it ."

If this truly is the real design - which I doubt - then, that's more reason to invest in an HP business class workstation as I'm in the lookout for the successor to the Precision M90.

Hell, I will bet my old notebook that its not a fake. LesDelliens (the source of the info and images) is one of the best sources for Dell notebooks. They were the first ones with correct info and pics on the older M1710, and also for the recent 1520/1521 and 1720/1721 notebooks. I don't know how they do it, but they are almost always right. This does look like a poorly done photoshop, but I think thats Dell's design failure.

Yes, you are the only one. I suggest you get your eyes checked. The XPS M1330 is the best looking Dell laptop ever. Actually, its probably the best Dell laptop ever.

Yea, if only looks were everything ;)

Too bad the graphics card can't run much! They need to take th XPS logo off that system and put something else on it. They can package and sell it as-is in some other branding.

Well, while I wouldn't expect this to be the actual color (nobody can really think that looks good, right?), I don't think the actual design will be all that different. I mean, every previous 17" XPS has been pretty much a gamer-rehash of the Inspiron line; they were even called Inspiron XPS initially. Even my Precision M90 is basically an Inspiron 9400 with a different paint job (and different cooling system, mouse, and lid, but still same chassis). It's just one way for Dell to cut costs. I think somebody just took an Inspiron 1720 and photoshopped the colors on there. Like I said, it will probably be a riced-out 1720, but I just don't believe Dell would use this God-awful paint scheme; even they're not that dumb.

Well, I think that's a subjective thing. I think it looks like the laptop version of someone taking a nice car and "ricing" it out with tacky neon lights under the muffler, silly spoilers, and rotating light-up hubcaps that do nothing. But I know there is an entire demographic that thinks those things are cool.

I guess Im just not the target demographic. Even the dell website advertises it as having "Maximum Bling" - but the bling, the "louvers" on the back, and the red lights on the size and front, just seem like really silly add-ons, to me. But I'm old (40) so Im not really looking for "bling" on a laptop, just a clean design.

I am going to wait until Dell puts spinners on the lid of the notebook. Then Dell puts some gold plating on the lid. Oh and do not forget about the fuzzy dice. Some pink fake fur would be nice. Grills around the touchpad as well. Some pulsing lights on the bottom of the notebook too.

That would be a DELL XPS with style! ;)

I think you are talking about the M1710, the predecessor to the M1730 that is the subject of this thread...I am talking about their recently released ultra-thin-and-light 13" notebook, the M1330. It doesn't have bling (a small XPS logo on the bottom edge of the lid is the only thing), or louvers, or red lights.

And yes, the M1710 is quite flashy (and not much to my taste to be honest), but at least it isn't as hideous as the M1730....Lights and louvers > faux CF-look patterning and big red slabs.

Link to more info on the M1330 here: http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsnb_m1330?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

I'm afraid that they just might be that dumb. Actually, I don't even think its dumb. Blind more like.

The new XPS is just absolutely hideous...

At least they added the keypad FINALLY. The color of the system is just horrible, the keyboard doesn't match, there's too much XPS branding, and the mix of old design ideas with new design ideas just doesn't work. The only part of this new XPS that looks decent is probably the bottom because I don't like the inside and I don't like the top of the lid either. I really expected more after they came out with the m1330. I also expected more from the graphics card.

I don't know about all of you, but when I buy a system I want black, silver, and clean lines. Car-like paintjobs and materials have never appealed to me, personally. Also, just because I play some war games doesn't mean I want my laptop to reflect that. Dell seems to be on a copying streak here. They copied Samsung with the m1330 and now they're trying to copy Acer and VooDoo at the same time for this XPS. It worked for the m1300, but it's not going to work here. Dell should have tried to copy Toshiba instead.

    Wow! It's terribly UGLY.

I was expecting Dell to finally respond to Apple and their nice looking MACs, by focusing the XPS on a performance laptop that is ergonomic in e.g. an airplane (a 17-inch Macbook is less tall than my 14-inch Inspiron 600m!) and looks good for office use. Essentially, a M1330 XPS with a 15-inch and 17-inch screen option + better video card (with DVI out -- no more VGA).

But if they release this, I might as well go buy one of the new MACs in October. Dell, tell us this picture is a joke?

I don't like the finish on the inside; guess they are trying to copy HP's Imprint Finish, which in my opinion is much better looking than this. I do, however, like the white keyboard. Very Apple-esque.

This notebook is disapointing. Just so many people are focusing on how ugly it is.

I have been waiting for either Dell or Alienware to get a Geforce 8m series card into their gaming notebooks since the beginning of the summer. Now finally one of those shows up, but its still just the 8700M? Come on. Eveyone knows that the 8700m is merely an overclocked 8600m GT and still doesn't hold a candle to the 7950 GTX that was in the old 17" XPS. How could Dell let this happen? That's why I'm disappointed in this notebook. It won't match up to the performance of the last generation.

On the bright side, other rumors I have tracked down indicate the XPS 1730 will support SLI. Dual 8700m's might be acceptable if vista gets an update to support SLI anytime soon.

Oh, but it is still really ugly.

Wow! Thats pretty nice. And its nice to find another notebook with a backlit keyboard (after the MacBook Pro).

Now the decision to go with the 8600GS doesn't seem all that bad, as long as it comes with 2 standard. Although, this is still as ugly as sin.

Has anyone seen a backlit keyboard thats black? just wondering if it exists.

Im thinking once all the details are out, half of you are gonna love it and not care so much about the looks.....at least those of you in the market for a new laptop. Im sure the price will be good for what you get.

Dell isnt stupid, and we here are a microscopic fraction of the potential buyers out there.

The Logitech G15 keyboard has black keys and a blue/red backlight (blue for the original version, red for the latest revision). Granted, it's not a laptop keyboard, but black backlit keys do exist :)

I doubt it, it not like that's the only gaming notebook on the market, and the price of the M1710 wasn't good for what you got, so I don't see why it should be different now.

Sure and I recommend anyone who buys this state of art to seriously consider a trip to the local mental institution... just because they may happen to meet some of designers of this "thing" in there...not for other reason.

maybe, standard 8600GS upgradeable to 8700M GT

I doubt this will sell at all, the Clevo M570RU is much cheaper, the Alienware m9750 is much better looking if ou want out of the world designs and probably will be cheaper as well...

Dell just shot itself in the foot, ripped out its own left arm and repeatedly bashed its head in untill it became a some kind of urple mush. Dell then ate it.. I remember how the original XPS's were actually ahead of their time... PIII's running at 1.1GHZ... etc

Mind you, its meant I've used the spectre of a new XPS to drive down the cost of a 1710 - website quoted price of about £1800, getting it for £1350.

I think it's a joke. That ugly thing in any color can not be the new XPS. If it is, Alienware will be like,"Um Dell, we change our mind."

And those can't be the specs, cause with those specs, the M1710 (with the King inside it) will still kick the M1730s butt.

My X205 cannot hang with my M1710 on anything except playing music and that's because it has better speakers. The M1710 with XP does everything faster then the X205 with Vista.

The M1710 can go into kitchen and make me a ham and cheese sandwich and grab me a beer faster then the X205 can.... Alright I'm joking but a man can dream can't he.

I for one think that the 1730 should wait for 8800's to ship, since the 1710 started out with the 7800's, or was it the M170, don't remember. Either way, I believe the configuration will improve in later revisions, as to stay true to Dell's "habits"
