The touchpad is in that position to accomodate right handed people; it gives access to the pad without moving away your left hand. Looks like it's going to be like that for a while. It's an inconvenience for lefties (but then are so many other hand related ergonomics).

Looks like I will once again have an AMD under the hood.

Last time I did was when i had my server (dual mps) which I had to sell :(

I need some benchmarks for hte 6150. Will it be able to handle Need For Speed(s), CS, CS:S?? I know its asking alot. but I want to know before I drop my cash.

So will it be able to play games with low detail??

I basically need the laptop to play games while i travel to University conferences etc, or when I am studying at home and need a quick fix.

I am assuming 64bit memory bus, shared meory etc.

    I don't agree with you.

First, I don't think the reason that the touchpad is in middle of the machine is that it is more convenient to right-handed people. Even if it is moved to somewhere right under the middle of the space bar, your left hand isn't in the way. Your left hand will only barely cover a small portion of the upper left corner. On the other hand, with the current position of the touchpad, your right hand has to move in order to access half of the pad on the right comfortably. For example, with your palm sticking to the palm rest as if you are typing try to use the vertical scroll bar. You will know you can hardly use it without bending your fingers a lot.

Second, the 17" models (also from HP) have the touchpad positioned right below the middle of the space bar. If HP is keeping the touchpad in the middle of the 14" and 15.4" machines just because it is the convenient position to the right-hand people, why do they do the same thing to the 17" models?

The 14" models has the on/off switch on top of the touchpad. This helps prevent touching while you are typing. However, the 15.4" models do not have that switch, so I hope HP will someday fix this. Even though it looks ugly, Dell does this right.

Thanks for the pictures Heffer. Looking very good.
Side note: Gotta love the 'duhish' captions for each picture.

Actually, alot of notebooks don't have on/off switches for they're touchpads including my Dell. My old Toshiba had a function key that performed that task. If my memory serves me correctly the Dv4000 which is a 15.4 has and on/off switch for the touchpad.

Interestingly enough, the article Heffer linked says the Dv2000 is the first 7 new hp notebooks.

Yeah, I like it too. Note it is only on dv2000 not v3000.
Also, from the CNET pics, the v3000 doesn't seem to be as thin as the pictures on the first page suggest.
Hopefully the dv2000 will be at least a little bit thinner.

The older pavilion ZE series also have an on/off function....I get all paranoid when watching movies on the battery life, so I turn off the touchpad w/ the button to save what little power it consumes.... but it's still nice to have if you don't want someone messing w/ your computer, and you know they're not gonna know why the touchpad isn't working, lol.

Well thats about the same thickness as the Asus A8JM which is still reasonable. Also all the ports on the V3000 are on the sides, since the LCD swings below the back and wont allow ports back there.

Oh, I said even Dell did it right. I meant they don't have the touchpad in the middle of the machine; it is right below the space bar.
Hmm... I had dv4000 before and it did NOT have a on/off switch.
I know there are a lot of notebooks that do not have a on/off switch, but there are also a lot of notebooks that do not put the touchpad in the middle.
A middle touchpad without the on/off switch is sometimes really annoying when your right hand touches the touchpad while you are typing.
I really don't understand why they don't put the switch on the 15.4" models.

Yeah, I also notice the seven total models. I guess there are 15.4" coming up. But the article says "two consumer lines that come in a glossy, piano-black finish with inlaid patterns". I hope the later models will also be nice looking.

I only wish HP makes those of harder plastics. All the v2000z, l2000, and dv1000 that I know of (plus zv6000), have a glossy finish of the keyboard and the touchpad after the first 6 months. You can rub them with alchohole as long as you want, there's no use; it's just the plastics.

I love the Compaq v3000 but wondering how much thinner the dv2000 is??

Looking forward to more 64x2 models (AMD already & later Intel) preferably with dedicated GPUs & webcam option & good speakers. I actually think the speakers should not just be below the screen as closing will muffle sound.

Looks: I prefer all black, even go as far as preferring matte black, the only thing I really want shining is a bad ass screen (again matte because I don't want gloss obstructing view of that screen). A few accents fine, but overall I think notebooks look best in black-like a tux. I'm all for options & personalization but let's not forget the classics just so we can gear up with an orange-silver-tuxedoshirt..as funny as they might be.

Best guess is that HP will announce additional X2 models when the X2 ships in June, probably at Computex Taipei on the 6th. They had to announce the X2 dv2000/V3000 now because it has an Intel counterpart that's closer to shipping. HP doesn't have any reason to hurt their current model sales until then.

    ZOMG!

The compaq v3000 looks insane. Love that all black look. Its like an updated Thinkpad but better.

Cannot wait for the dual core turion. Hopefully the graphics wont suck that bad. Although I have heard that the geforce 6150 is better than the ati xpress200m so it shouldnt be too bad.

i don't like the weird wavy line thing going on with the hp's design. i assume those aren't b/c of bad image quality. if it were just plain black and silver, i would like it much more...

This is a bit off topic, but has anyone noticed HP's new 'theme' so to say?

I don't like it . . it's not appealing. I don't exactly know what they are trying to do. Looks like they want to make it seem more personal.

I'll have to see the dv2000/v3000 in person before I finally decide what I think of them.

According to one of the links posted on NBR about the Compaq/HP, it seems that these two laptops are two of upcoming 7 new laptops.

I hope one of those is a 15" with a decent video card and turion x2.

I don't think anyone answered my previous question. Anyway, I'd like to know if anyone knows when the dv2000 is coming to Canada?

I really like the look of the dv2000. It's just very minimalistically black and cool.

Looks totally different from the pics posted on page 1 of the v3000.

Can anyone confirm?? This pic makes the v3000 look like garbage. Like an older toshiba laptop

Quite interesting early review considering you can see the V3000 in video action. They also gave numbers for the battery life, but didn't mention which battery they had on their model. It appears this sexy beast have more than 4 hours autonomy ! I am pretty impress. Too bad they complained about the screen... i was going to pre-order it!!

But I still don't see why they could only give a score of 6.9/10.

    In summary :

    The good:
Strong set of specs for the price; solid performance and battery life; can be configured with AMD or Intel processor; bright 14.1-inch display; includes most of the ports and connections home users need.

The bad: Putting pressure on the case above the optical disc drive results in buzzing noise; lacks Windows XP Media Center Edition option.

    Here the link http://reviews.cnet.com/HP_Compaq_Presario_V3000/4505-3121_7-31864365.html?tag=feed&part=rss&subj=video?tag=vid&autoplay=true#mgallery

6.9??? It's probably because they haven't fully tested it yet, and reliant on the past models' reputation. One thing I don't like about CNET is that it's very subjective.

Looks like nvidia has updated their GeForce Go 7 series with the inclusion of the 7200, and a picture of the v3000.

What is interesting is the specification of the 7200, which can be found here:

    http://www.nvidia.com/object/go_7_series_techspecs.html

Scroll to the bottom, and note that it says "n/a" next to memory. Hmmm...

YHEW! Thank god, according to the 3D demo on the HP site the DV2000 DOES INDEED have firewire. I was scared when I saw they didn't list it in the press release but I guess u take that with a grain of salt when they say:
    "price starting as low as $1099, $999 after a $50 mail-in rebate"

1099-50= 999?! Whoever typed that is the guy I want in charge of MY rebate check! :)

Does anybody know what's the difference between HP dv2000 and Compaq v3000??

It is just different design and webcam option?
Or one of them is really 'better' than the other?

I was gonna to buy a Dell Ispiron using those coupons, but now I've seen these new HP models... I think I'll spend a couple of extra bucks...!

They are the same, except for a few optional features. With the dv2000, you have the optional Geforce 7200(only on the Intel version) which is not available with the V3000, but other than that and the features you mentioned they are the same.
