Yes, the first panel had some red tinting on the bottom but the last one is perfect.

Thanks - it is comforting to know that I am not the only one being picky, and that HP will take care of it. :)

Well then it would appear the LCD backlight issue is still not resolved; I wish they would take care of that problem at LG Philips, it is unconscionable a $3000 laptop would have uneven backlighting. My current LCD (on the 8730w) also has that issue, although it is, on the third screen, much subdued and only visible on uniformly white backgrounds. It would seem they still haven't figured out how to mix the individual R, G and B leds postioned left, center and right at the bottom of the LCD. My old Toshiba laptop, with its dull, CCFL panel, has a perfectly even backlight.

They are very good at service, indeed, but you should insist, they have an advisory out (at least for the 8730w) saying this is "normal". I am certain with all the returns for faulty screens they have had they are simply trying to curb the return tide that is commensurate with the expectations of the clientele as for the so-called perfection of the DreamColor panel...

Regarding backlighting evenness, etc - some of you guys are are being way, way, way too sensitive about it. If the work you do or your preferences are that detail-sensitive, you should be looking into a desktop monitor well into the four figure range.

Let's not pick apart the 8740w and blow things beyond proportion.

Of course, you are right. It still does not change the fact that this is abnormal, though, especially when comparing to a $700 laptop (when new). I use the HP to show pictures to my clients. Only the pickiest ones notice the red and blue tinge on the lower corners, and mostly on black and white or subdued, nearly monochromatic pictures.

Thanks for the tip/warning - I guess they have a point - if enough are faulty, that is "normal". :)

And I hear ya - Toshiba A100, perfect display, served me very well for 4 years, just can't bear to look at it after the DC screen.

I don't know - when some areas travel up a good 300 of 1080 pixels into usable real estate, showing a strong tint is distracting. Granted, it is only white whites and greys that I really notice it, but it isn't professional to go on-site and present a web site (generally white backgrounds) with that sort of display (the techy version of showing up with a stained shirt to a client meeting??) I am not a professional photographer, but I do need to trust what I am seeing. Also, if HP is replacing them, then there has to be some merit to the complaints.

BTW, my 19" LG S-IPS desktop monitor is excellent - on sale at $250 a few years back. And granted, it isn't a wide-gamut, has some backlight bleeding, but accurate colours, even backlight, and viewing angles that only an IPS panel can give. :)

Yeah - like the bride who wants her dress to show up white, not white with a stain at the end! :D

    ROFLMAO!!!

Absof.. :cool:lutely! It's so dull compared to the DC even when in sRGB! In native color space under high brightness conditions (outside in daylight), there is simply no comparison, the DC panel really stands out. It's like day and night... And when I look at my old Toshiba 110CS and the old Thinkpad 500... It amazes me that we were actually able to work on these tiny, coarse, dull and dark screens... AND pay tons of money for enduring the suffering!!! Ah, those were the days...

Or... Wow, how did you make that antique faded effect at the bottom of the picture, just like my Grandpa's wedding pictures :D (when looking at the pinkish tint at the bottom of a black and white picture)

FWIW, I have been working with the best HP sales rep - the best phone sales rep, period - for a year now. His name is Sam Kramer, samuel.e.kramer at hp.com, (edited to ward off spam bots, by advice of several)...triple 8-625-0242, x 781-0836. Not only has he given me top discounts, but also additional discounts each time something goes wrong and, most importantly, he stays with the deal until things are resolved to your satisfaction. He is more like a corporate sales rep than a "phone" rep. I was referred by several others, and everyone I've referred to him has written me to thank me. Use him: you won't regret it. PM me if you have any questions.

EDIT: One person questioned whether it was proper for me to list this salesman's contact info. It was considerate of them, but I can assure you that I know this salesman well, having done many deals with him, and he is delighted to get referrals from NBR (and TPCR) members. It's how he makes his living. (I, by the way, do not benefit in any way by referring him.) It turns out that many NBR and TPCR members have already had him as their sales person and the accolades for him have been unanimous. Even a mod on NBR has used him to his satisfaction. I have also posted a thread asking for others to mention particularly helpful contacts - not just sales people - at HP. With all the difficulties some have, a reference of high quality, helpful people seems like a good thing to have on this forum. Any dissenting views?

Can you send me the e-mail of this person via private messaging, please? I'm looking for a BL keyboard with no flex since many months ago. Thank you very much in advance ;)

Funny, I read these recent posts and took note of Sam Kramer's name, only because I consider him not only the best HP computer sales rep, but the best in the business, bar none. Then I look down the "6 messages" to see who had provided Sam's contact info; it was me, over a month ago! Glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks so. Well, glad to see yet another; I know that he is very popular, and for good reason ;)

    Hi guys!
I'm thinking of buying a HP EliteBook 8760w strictly for live audio recording/production. After much research that is now my prefered choice ahead of the alienware, Dell precision M4600/M6600.
Does anyone have any info on this laptop? i.e. DPC latency, how it behaves when using USB & Firewire audio interfaces?
I'm mainly using Ableton Live8 & gonna be using an RME Fireface, FW or USB... any advice will be much appreciated!!
