You get get a tiny 4 port usb hub from targus for about £3. I only ever use 2 usb ports really, 3 at most...especially when i'm on the fly and not using a usb mouse. I would feel pretty stupid having a laptop with usb cables or pens sticking out all over the place. 2 is plenty for general use.

Initial impressions of heat, noise, more details on the screen (guessing they sent you an LED screen?). How much reflection do you get off the screen? Viewing angles, especially vertical.

Is the weight evenly distributed across the machine or is lopsided?

If you have an extended battery take a shot of it on the machine? i know it's supposed to stick out below the machine but I want to see how much it sticks out.

    Touchpad impressions?

How consistent/reliable is the fingerprint reader?

How big is the power brick and how much does it weigh?

I assume the latency on your EVDO is still up around/above 200 (ie, not gaming capable)? Is it revision 0 or A?

How good is the wifi at picking up a signal?

What's the noise like on the slot loading drive?

How are the touch buttons across the top (media direct and whatever else is up there)?

    How are the speakers?

    Recovery time from sleep/hibernate?

If they sent you a SSD, what's your boot time?

How solid are the screen hinges?

Are all m1330's coming with BluRay drives?

I'm sure I have more non-benchmark questions but the above list is probably more than enough for an initial impressions story. If you only talk about one thing talk about the screen.

edit: which SSD are they offering? The 32gb Samsung (SATA?) or something else? Is it a 2.5" drive?

Regarding the SZ update, I'd need a computer in my hands by August 1 at latest. If it's released late July, by the time it ships it could be almost September by the time I get one (unless I can walk into a Sony store and pick one up).

The TZ has a fantastic form factor. I am concerned it may still be underpowered for Vista though and I am not really interested in downgrading to XP right now...also given the amount of typing I do on the go, I'm concerned about the extra small keyboard.

I'm probably going to buy the 1330 when it comes out...unless I get an SZ. I'm just going to monitor ship times and figure it out from that.

Does your review unit have an SSD drive? If so, how does the load time compare between that drive and some similar laptops with normal 5400 or 7200 drives?

    Agreed :D

Price would be the most important piece of information. Aside from that, your impressions of the keyboard feel, screen/backlight (esp if you have the LED model), the media buttons on top of the keyboard (are they as annoying as the HP ones), and overall build quality would be greatly appreciated.

My biggest questions are whether the Ethernet port is Gigabit speed and the total weight with the 6-cell battery.

I'm also wondering if it comes with a remote, and if so, is it infrared or bluetooth?

Even though my brother won't be playing many games on this laptop, I'm now worried about the 8400M GS....I know he loves to play Tiberium Wars...but I know for a fact he will fall in love with Bioshock. Are there any alternatives in the same price range that has better graphics capabilities?

Keep in mind that the only two companies I'm talking about is Dell and Sony. (His choice)

We'll try to get to as much of this as we can in the first thoughts review, and we'll hit all the points as best we can in the full review.

We have a unit with a red top, it's prety impressive, even with a not-final paint job. Out model is one of the last pre-prod units, so there are a few imperfections that we're aware of and won't grade against, mostly in regards to paint.

Incidentally, this one does have Rev A from Verizon in it, the speeds are spectacular. I don't know that I'd commit to using it for gaming, but for browsing, it feels similar to WiFi...in this market anyway.

Agreed, this is what I want to know more than anything else right now. I'm now torn between the m1330 and an Asus z35f, with the biggest factors being battery life and price. The Dell might drain a little more because of the graphics card (the Asus uses an onboard Intel video chipset), but the SSD might offset that. Please run some good tests on the battery for the review.

I got a Canadian flyer from Dell with info on the XPS 1330. I'll scan it once I dust off the scanner in the closet.

It looks like it starts at $1499 CANADIAN with:
    Intel COre 2 Duo T7100
    Vista Home
    2GB RAM
    120GB HD
2.0MP webcam (therefore not the LED backlight)
    8X DVDRW

No info on the options in this flyer, but the Dell salesguy was kind of clueless when I mentioned the options. For example, I asked about pricing on the LED and blueray, he goes on to say $1000 for each option. I said no way, the Sony's LED backlight aren't even that expensive, and he goes on to say that no Sony's have LED backlights.

So that seems to be 1399 USD. I like that it comes with 2 GB of RAM standard. From there, the video card would probably be about 125 USD, based on what the M1210 offers now.

How much do you think the LED backlight might cost?

By the way, I just now registered to post in this thread. :D

For comparison, the XPS1210 is on sale for $1199 in Canada, and its $999 in the US.

That's cheaper than the SZ and comparable to the Asus W7 prices on newegg. I'm sure it'll go up when you add LED backlighting and dedicated graphics. They'll probably offer discounts before too long though.

Nope, the first M1210 discounts came like 2 weeks ago, or about 3 weeks before it is discontinued. I doubt it will be discounted until another year or two, when its replacement comes.

A base price of $1299 would leave (for me) about $400 of budget space for the 8400M, a faster processor, and hopefully the LED display. Wonder if I can squeeze it all in.

Considering the XPS M1210 is $1399 without the sale currently going on in Canada, this doesn't seem like a bad price.

It will be cutting the budget close, but it should be manageable. $50 for the bump to T7300, $150 for the 8400M, and ~200 for the LED screen.

if its only $100 more expensive than the older one, this should start at $1299 or so. (Considering that until last week the M1210 was at $1200, not 999, which I assume is a clearance price).

Well.. Dell is really milk-ing the US on this model. Better wait for coupons for this thing before buying.

    Same spec configuration.
T7100, 2GB, G8400, LED LCD, 120GB, wireless N, Blue tooth, black color, std warranty

US site 2180 before tax and shipping
Canada 1640 before tax and shipping.

I understand Canada has a lot higher tax then us but still I bet it will cost at least $200 less getting it from Canada.

i just went and configured a m1330 on the US site:

    Base Price- $1299
Configured- $1879 w/ core 2 7300, 2GB, Vista Home Prem., Standard Display w/ 2.0 MP camera, 120 GB 5400RPM hard drive, the 8400GS, DVD-RW (no choices), Sound Blaster, Finger Print Reader, 9 cell battery, Wireless-N, and Bluetooth

HOLY MOLY ITS UNDER 2K THIS IS MY NEXT COMPUTER

preliminary ship date is 27 July tho, they say its a 30 day build time

The LED screen is 150 bucks fyi, so i might have to put that in there. is it really going to be all that much better than a standard screen like for viewing outdoors???

It's not so much the viewing angles etc.. it's the battery life it affects most as far as i'm aware.

If those prices are anywhere near the same in the UK i'll probably get one.
