My 2 week old i640m is on for sale right now. :-S
I want the Dell XPS M1330. What's the maximum resolution you think this will support?
-
13.3" screens are 1280x800. I've never seen any higher resolutions without moving up to a 14.1" screen.
-
Umm, this may be a show stopper for me. -
its a 13.3" screen what can you possible expect? how good are your eyes?

However, in Dell's case, the new announcement might (and already has to some degree) cause an increase in orders of the current Inspiron line. Aside from any potential increase in build quality on the upcoming line and the aforementioned Santa Rosa + DX10 card offerings, many people who have been following this development find the new Inspirons to be inferior in every other way. In the case of the 1520, the weight and thickness have increased over the E1505; the keyboard layout has changed for the worse (some other people in this thread have reiterated my concerns about the placement Ins/Del/Home/End/Pg Up/Down keys); the speakers are now under the bottom of front lip, facing down, the optical bay has been placed on the right; still no DVI, HDMI, eSATA and the VGA port is no longer in the back; still no fingerprint reader or built in mic; oh and did anyone else mention the new design is ugly?
I hope the M1330 wins out, but I'm sure it'll be far too expensive, especially considering only an 8400M GS and not the GT. Now if they put an LED screen into the D630/830 those would be sure to win out over everything (no, they do not have an 8600M GT). -
14.1" at 1440x900 need a good eye. -
This "Dell's" design is a clear ripoff of HP's dv series...
-
I never thought I'd say this, but dude, I might be getting a Dell.
-
-
Look at the Sager NP2090; you won't be too far off. It looks like a ThinkPad, has an 8600M GT and costs like $1200.

Thankfully, it looks like they are using small, flush webcams like Apple uses. I've never understood why everyone always had their webcams in a bump. Granted some of those doubled as a handle, but many just seemed to do it to make sure you didn't miss that there was a webcam and that was unnecessary.
It's good that the E1420 has the 8400M option. I considered the E1405 briefly before because of the pricing, but the restriction of IGP killed it for me. Plus the E1405 was overweight considering it is 14" yet 5.3lbs while my MBP is a 5.6lbs yet a 15.4". Hopefully, the E1420 is much lighter since the new MBP is 5.4lbs. -
Ah... Didn't notice the keyboard layout.
The new Inspiron lineup really does look like last gen Toshibas with the current gen Toshiba keyboards ( Silver Keys ).
But the specs for the Dell surpasses the Toshibas and hopefully it can pull out cheaper.
However for build quality, I'm sure it'd come out as the same as the Toshibas. -

There is a mic, or dual mics, if you look at #14 in the pictures posted. One on each side of the webcam. I lacked webcam, IrDA and built in mic on the 6400 and 420 so I will absolutely buy either the 1420 or 1520. I don't think the new design is ugly but could be better. Fingerprint reader is a business thing. Why would you want that on a computer sitting at home? It's not like I would leave my laptop unattended at Starbucks or similar. Optical bay on the right - why is that bad? My T60 also has that setup. I can agree on the VGA port. Should be in the back.
I actually value my past experience with Dell's support people. I had a stationary machine with some problems over 2½ years. They were good and quick and helpful. I also find the Dell forum very good. Unless everything I mentioned here I would have bought an ASUS right away. IBM is great (have a T60 for work) but is too expensive/specs compared to an Inspiron.

What size of battery can we expect the m1330 to have and still be only 4lbs? Im guessing a 4-cell. Probably 2-3 hours battery life?
-
The original post is incorrect when saying the 1520 will have UXGA. The 1520 will NOT have UXGA.

dells famous for their price is to performance ration and this is just proof at least the E1420 and the E1520 is
compared to the asus F3Sv it seems to be at par or almost at ar with it in terms of erformance but as far as the looks go not there yet dell
HP!!! do something !!! -
So thats why they were selling all the xps m1210's for 999... Damn I'm hoping that the price for the m1330 will go down by sept to at least like 1400 with webcam, nvida, and the leds. I think I'm screwed
-
-
They certainly aren't going to drop that much that quickly.
-
mattireland It used to be the iLand..
Nice post. Thanks.
The thing I can't stand about these is the changes in colour. OK fine - if they must have a silver and a black option then fine but all these colours:
a) make the user look stupid and unprofessional
and
b) make it more prone to be stolen because its more conspicuous.
The colours DO NOT affect performance so what's the point.
I do like the GPU of 8400m though - that's pretty cool. -
The black looks decent from the outside. The inside looks like crap though...They made it even worse than before...
-
YOU DONT HAVE TO PICK SILVER OR RED! OMG..... NO WAY.... -
Does anyone know if these laptops will be available to buy in the UK by early August at the latest? What are current estimates of the 1520 and 1720 prices? If the 15" notebook can be upgraded to a T7500, 8600m-gt gddr3 with one 2Gb stick of memory for around £1000, I'll happily consider them.
-
The santa rosa business laptops were released pretty much the same time here so theres no reason why we won't get the inspirons at the same time to. I hope so anyway..i'm toying with the idea of the m1330 for uni.
I think you may end up paying a little more than that but i would expect it will good value.
Rock do that spec in your price range if dell were to let you down. -
Does anyone know if the XPS 1330 will have a non-glossy screen? It looks like it could be a great travelling notebook for business purposes and the glossy screens simply do not do well with office lighting.
-
The xps line was never designed for the business consumers. It's aimed towards the people who want multimedia on the go and hence why I dont think the m1330 will have a matte finish to the screen.
-
Thanks for the response. I think it's unfortunate (for me anyway) as an example, the Apple MacBook Pro was also not necessarily designed for business use but I see many people using it for both work and play these days - and it has a matte screen avaiable.
I guess I can hope but I understand its probably a longshot.
Cheers -
Nope. Definitely not going to happen; the M1210 never had a Matte option. Most laptops these days don't, its only the MBP and all of the ThinkPad/Latitude/HP Business models that do.
-
A non-MBP 15.4" is considered light if it is 6.0lbs.
I think the second lightest 15.4" is the Samsung X60, which hasn't been updated for quite a while and not available in the US.
The M1330 looks pretty and thin, but the rest are still ugly (a bit better than the current models though).
The worth things about Dell (besides the appearance) is the cheap brushed chassis.
I used an brand new X1210 for a week, and the palm rest and the DFJK SPACE keys were worn out after only a few days of use.
The following picture shows what I am talking about.
The shinny look of the keys and the palm rest really makes the notebook look old.
HP's Imprint coating would preventing the palm rest to from wearing and becoming shinny.
I hope we can see the same thing on other manufacturers soon. -

June 26th.... can't wait!

Ouch... I saw a post on a Dell Inspiron with silver palm rests that looked terrible. That is my only and big fear about buying an Inspiron. If it turns out like that in say six months - what will Dell say? I could not live with my most important gadget looking like that... At work (and home for now) I have an IBM T60 which is all black and no risk of wear since it is not painted, neither keyboard or palm rest.

oi stop eating greasy sandwiches
oil will detoriate the keys... lol -

Is it certain that these are coming out on the 26th?

So I've been thinking about getting a new laptop computer (actually it'll be my first laptop) since my current desktop has been giving me countless problems the past few months. But strangely, it's been perfect today. Maybe it knows I'm going to replace it soon
Anyways, my friend recommended the Dell Inspiron 1750 (thats what his friend has and he said it runs WoW very smoothly), and just as I was finishing the configurations and extras I wanted, the website said that product didn't exist anymore. Instead, it was replaced by a new Dell Inspiron 1720/1721, which I had no idea was being released today.
Now my problem is deciding which one to get... the 1720 or the 1721? I don't want to spend over $1300, and I need it to be good enough to run Warcraft 3 (that's all I really play these days) smoothly. I assume the video card and RAM upgrade is a must? The AMD version does not offer a video card upgrade and I'm not sure how good the one it comes with is.
Suggestions anyone? I can't help it but I think the hot pink cover is so cute. Call me an attention whore. -
Don't bother with the AMD ones...the Core 2 Duo isn't much more money and is just so far ahead in terms of performance.
WoW will run fine on a mid-range video card since the game itself is older. A GeForce 8400 or Radeon X1400 can handle it. -
The default video card for the Intel one is an integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100.
1. If I wanted to play some games (like most Blizzard games, Sims 2, nothing too crazy), do I need to upgrade the card? To at least the 128MB 8400M GS? How will it perform without it?
2. Any good in spending money on the processor upgrades? Is it worth it?
3. Do I need that extra .5/1 gig of RAM upgrade? I had purchased a desktop earlier this year with Vista and it performed very poorly. I assume it was because it didn't have enough RAM (1gig), but I also hear Vista is very slow.
4. How is the glossy screen feature? I've heard mixed reviews on that.
5. Does upgrading the sound card make much of a difference? Or is it not noticeable to be worth it?
6. Can I downgrade from Vista to XP? I did not like Vista before and I am very comfortable on XP and would like to keep it. Would that be a hassle? Do I need to go buy a copy of XP for that? -
Didn't anyone else notice that the gpu is GDDR2, not GDDR3 like the G1s.
-
1. Yes, if you are going to spend your money anywhere it should be with the video card. Choose the 8400 it will make gaming much better.
2. As for the processor, 2.4GHz is definetly an awesome feature but it does cost a bundle. To my knowledge, most average laptops run on 2.0GHz. Maybe go for 2.2GHz just to be safe.
3. This computer comes installed with Vista so you will need 2GB of RAM. Even if you choose to go to XP later I would stick with 2GB since many new programs are requiring it.
4. I only know as much as the youtube video has said. Shouldn't be a problem according to them.
5-6. I don't know the answers to five and six. Laptops usaully have weak sound systems. I am going to buy the m1330. Since I plan on watching and listening to media I will choose the better sound system. The computer comes with VIsta but you can always transfer to XP. Not a problem. My freind has Vista and soon put XP on there as well. Vista is slower and has some bugs still.
Nice name by the way. -
