Definitely sold.
This will be my super ipod. External hds load songs onto the flash hd. I will buy the 10 inch screen. $300 sold lets go.

Can anybody tell me if this thing has Bluetooth or at least supports a USB dongle. It would seem to me to be a major omission for an ultraportable computer to not be able to connect thru a cell phone.
-
This seems a very priceworthy lappie
Is 3g connection confirmed?
It seems so in the youtube video but doesn't apear in the specs -
There will be no 3G, I double clicked that icon myself actually to see what it did and they indicated it would be removed -- wasn't meant to be there.
The screen would not be readable outside.
They're still working out distribution, they said they're talking to Best Buy but are unsure if they would sell this device (can you imagine what a boon it'd be over the holidays to sell this thing at $250 though?). It will be sold through their regular channels, so Asus resellers I assume and places like NewEgg.
They mentioned nothing about a 10in version. Also, they mentioned nothing about being to put Windows on this machine, they insisted it would be Linux only.
I was able to bring up a Linux Terminal screen, but didn't type any commands, I asked how much "damage" I could do by using it and they insisted you'd be restricted in commands that could be run, but I'm betting that's not the case so much. -

hmmm interesting if it were a bit more cheaper, like $99... i might be interseted.
$200 is a bit much, i wasted my money enough on "alternative" to a proper windows desktop computer.
palmtop $900 (windows mobile this one is next to useless, basically a compromise of a ultra limited version of windows)
mac notebook $2500 (this one is actually usefull, but for me, a mac is not a complete windows replacement. it is a good pc companion, definitely..)
but.. this asus.. as some post above suggested, this could be used as a kids first pc. -
-
I was already sold since the day of the computex release
-
The 10" model is to come out in 2008 I beleive but the pictures I saw of it, its butt ugly compared to the 7" in my opinion. I'm hoping they make the 10" model a bigger version of this 7" since the 7" looks stylish and sexy to me. I hope it will come out in black though, to offset the black border around the screen.
-
Andrew does it have a mechanical or magnetic clasp? does it have anything to compel it to stay closed?
-
Hey,
this is just great, it is good to see that you don't need a 2GHz processor and 2GB of ram just to surft the web and use office aplications...like with vista -
Ok look.
Put a 250 gb hd in an external, $200 total. ( or a smaller laptop hd and upgrade your laptop to 250 gb etc)
You have the ultimate ipod. Only you can use file sharing on it to download music on its own. Connect it to your car stereo. In fact leave it in your car 24/7 and when youre in wireless range get more music.
At $200 it would eliminate 3 consumer gadgets it could be like a storm I think. -
-
what is the max resolution of the vga out?
-
I was sold the first time i saw this. $200? amazing.
considering most UMPC's and small tablets have about the same power...for 10x the price... yeah, i'm getting one.
Would be great to bring to school, and sync up with a bigger PC or lappie when I get home.
put me up for 1...nah, make it 2 (i'll probably destroy the first one in a couple weeks ) -
Unless you have some monstrous oversized pockets. I wouldn't be caught dead jogging with this thing. -
I have tried this for 2 days,it's quite good for a budget 250$ lappy.
-
Haha... try to crack a smile next time. It looks like you're getting your mugshot taken.
-
Well no it would be a mini laptop whos prime purpose is like an ipod.
It wouldnt be as small as an ipod though. Wouldnt jog with it. -
-
-
When does it hit the market?
-

At first,i came with my Sony TX and asked the manager to take photograph in order to compare EEE and TX.But he didnt agree due to the difference in stylish, technology and price, therefore he showed some another 11" series.
I hope i will soon contact the manager to review it asap ,post picture first

@Andrew:do you mind if I borrowed your figure of Os screen for my review if Asus Vietnam dont allow me to borrow Asus EEE -
Hi GRZ530. Thank you for the pictures. They look very great!
By the way, does anyone notice that the "window key" now has been replaced with something different. Maybe a "home key"? -
Yes, thanks for the comparison picture!
And yes, its interesting that the Windows key has been replaced, maybe this is the final model or its different depending on the region???
I'm still worried about the small screen, looks pretty hard to read. They could have put a larger screen, did they not to cut down on costs? Can't wait until it comes out and for your review! -

Until Asus gets closer to actually releasing the Eee it's entirely possible that the Eee will go through many slight changes. -
Does anyone know if this laptop will have Remote Desktop capability to other PCs that run Windows?
-
-
There's the rdesktop tool under Linux (and anumber of GUIs for it, such as krdc) which always worked flawlessly for me to connect to WinXP using Remote Desktop. Of course VNC would also work.
-
All this preview is nice, but here is my first thought, "Where is the pre-order page?"
-
So the price will range from $250 to $500? What will be the differences in specs aside from the flash storage capacity? Amount of ram installed? Anything else?
-
The pre-order page is here
http://www.allasus.com/CATALOG/prod...d=346&osCsid=af2e5dd98ebc77b4f8b4ee580d20b932 -
-
I wonder is the ram replaceable.
-
well technically I could make a preorder page and take deposits.
Thats just a reseller named star tech taking deposits.
If youre new to how asus works its always really hard to get the new stuff and they like send 5 of something to all the dealers. So preordering doesnt let you get it any faster.
Dont preorder asus that would be my advice, learn all the different places you can get one and spend some time finding one when its new
Or relax and wait til its easier -

Ugh, I haven't been satisfied enough with notebook deals right now, that I am wanting to wait until Bearlake-Penryn refreshes out next summer, already heh, so the Eee is VERY alluring...!
But, I'm rolling with the Zune right now, and one thing I'm liking about the Eee is the light linux os! How much HD space would be left over after configuring XP on the Eee?
Though, maybe MS will get rid of DRM, or maybe the Zune firmware will get cracked... miracles do happen! Or maybe I'll sell my Zune...?
Damn. I'm beginning to think of using this Eee and a nice 21" LCD at college! Or maybe I could even use both this desktop and the eee at college--that would take care of my Zune. And then next summer when penryn-bearlake is out, I could invest in a top-of-the-line PC to replace my desktop/gaming/etc. I imagine I would still use the Eee, even then! Damn, I want one of these.
If it comes out mid-August, and sales do bottleneck the availability, how soon then can I expect one in my hands?? -
doesn't anyone happen to know if you can get these now in Taiwan where they make em?
-
GRZ530 if I wrong, please correct me -
What an awesome device, and the answer is yes, I will be picking one of these up when the product is launched. Everything about it is perfect and the SD slot makes it possible to upgrade the memory with 8GB for under 100 dollar/euros.
My only concern with the laptop is the crappy battery time. 3 hour will be between 1.5-2 hours in real life when you fiddle and surf on it. It would make a perfect video playback device on journeys or long flights but the battery will most likely die after little after 1 hour. That kind of sucks and hopefully they will offer a high capacity battery or find a way to make it more efficient. -

Still, it's possible the video out performance will be good enough for large LCDs. -
I'm pretty sure the video out res will be 1600x1200, that what it is on a Intel 910 chipset, and thats the chipset the Eee supposed to have
So a 21" LCD may work (with a VGA to DVI converter, of course), if the native res is 1600x1200 or below
Also luwalira, we don't know for sure that the SD slot is SDHC compatible, no one would answer that question for me, so you may be out of luck with your 8GB SD card
Although I hope it is compatible because I already have an 8GB SD card that I would love to use in my Eee -
A number of SDHC cards come with converters that are compatible with SD slots.
Just need to read the package when buying. Many, but not all, of them have it. -
As for the $200/250 thing, the $200 price was for a 4GB model, the $250 price is for an 8GB model. So its essentially the same either way. -
PLZ -
Maybe i'm dumb, but how is a low clocked Pentium M Dothan computer with SSD and a small display only getting 3hrs battery on 4 cells? Something doesn't sound right. For that matter, why would people be saying it runs 'warm'? In my mind it should be cool to the touch. Especially when running linux.
1) Make the screen the size of the display. I hate when companies do that. I went out of my way to get a laptop that didn't do that (w3j). And it even does it to SOME extent.
2) Higher res LED backlit screen. I'll pay. Don't worry, i'll pay.
It'd be pretty cool if it had 2xSDHC slots so you could really expand the storage.
It looks pretty cool otherwise. They fill up that backlid with a full screen and i'm in -
I like how half the people in here want more stuff in it or are complaining about something. It's a two hundred dollar laptop, that's practically unfathomable. you can't make a desktop for that much. The target audience doesn't need to output 4000x3000 resolution, doesn't need and array of SD slots, won't care if the ram is soldered on, and gets nothing from funning vista on it. Battery life is as simple as buying a replacement battery and swapping them.
Dont get me wrong, I'd love nothing more than to have a 9ish inch LED glossy screen in it, and yes, I'd pay for it too. I've not measured anything, but it almost looks like a widescreen would fit perfectly in the space occupied by the screen and speakers. Granted, you have to find somewhere to move the speakers, but I think it's doable, and I imagine somebody out there is willing to figure it out themselves, and might even be generous enough to write up a guide for the rest of us.
