Well, that was my point with the monitoring the m9750 pricing to see if it drops further. If it does, then maybe you go ahead and do it. It might at least buy you some time to see what all of the Clevo resellers do.

Amazing hos such expensive laptops can look so tacky. The M15x is nasty.

I personally adore the option to switch between the graficchips in the m15x. Would be nice to see something like that on other notebooks in the future. Switching from a X3100 to 8400M in a sony nb makes no sense in my opinion.

even if its a work in progress, the prices should remain similar:
    m15x: T7500 2.33Ghz, 2GB Ram, 120gb HD 7200RPM, 512MB 8800GTX for around $2,200 ain't bad at all

Agreed. However, the M17X prices are insane. The M15X would be something I would buy if I didn't already have my G2S.

the marks will be accurate, as far as i know the 3DMark scores ONLY test the capabilities of the Graphics Chip, not any other part of the PC. Although even if it does have an effect the 8800 will be a huge leap, looking at the same chart the 7950 beat most of the other 8000 series cards and was on a lower end processor

3dmark06 is highly CPU dependent. It has a portion which tests only the CPU and not the graphics card at all, making it obviously biased towards systems with better CPUs.

Well, actually ,the 3dmark06 is a pretty trustable source for laptop benchmarking. I ran it on my 7950GTX, and on somebody`s desktop with a 8600GTS which scored pretty close to my GPU,even though it is only 128 bit, and Crysis ran identically on both systems (the difference was that he had a desktop 2.2 processor, I had T7500) ,the same with Half Life 2, NFS Pro Street demo etc....
I know that if you want to play Crysis on med you need AT LEAST 5500 3dmark06 points...assuming that my system is the reference, and I have nearly 5400...

well the 8800 still looks pretty good tbh, even with the 0.8ghz advantage if its doing 2x the performance of a 7950, it still should be a very good contender and probably much better with the 256bit interface.

I wonder if Alienware can hurry up and release the m15x/m17x in the UK already, there seems to be quite an ample supply of 8800's over here with at least 2 companies offering them for delivery before Christmas

I actually just caved and bought the m9750, i like the idea of the m15x, but it isn't going to appear in the UK anytime soon (if its anything like previous machines it will be 3 months later then US with an extra £300 cost for same configs($600)). spent £1500($3000) and im very happy :)

in the end i chose not to wait, simply because the price of the m9750 dropped quite a bit(and when m15x/m17x arrive i bet they will either keep prices the same or simply stop manufacturing it), and there is no way the m15x could match it for price-performance ratio when it comes out in Europe. Plus its just a personal preference but the m15x/m17x look quite cheap/plasticy and i really can't quite see why they threw so much good work out the window (taking ideas from m9750, used it at a friends and its pretty amazing tbh) with using the glossy material, and a huge form factor. Well for anyone waiting for the m15x don't let me put you off, if you can afford it and want the 8800GTX go ahead, but im happy with my 2x7950's for half the price of one 8800.

    Hi,
I emailed AlienWare UK, this is what they had to say:

    "Thank you for contacting Alienware.

Regarding your inquiry, unfortunately, we do not have any definite information about when the new Area 51 m15x will be released or the starting price for it."

    :(

I was originally looking at the m5550 and the Rock Pegasus 670. The 670 seems to have too many issues at the moment. Plus, will all the other laptop manufacturers step up to AlienWares challenge?

    L

Edit: The m5550 is still up on the UK website.. (make of that what you will..)
