I was looking for an answer to that as well. Was told yes by XoticPC, but in Ryzeki's G51J Review:

Kevin, i would like to know 3(+1) answers:
1) What display does it have (for example G50V has [AUO1B7B, B154SW01 VB (AU Optronics)]) - i need manufacturer and model number...
2) On Ebay BTO-Tech shows PM45 chipset on his selling items - as i can presume that this is error - when i check on Intel site (Intel® Core™ i7-720QM) this processor specification - i can see that this is [Mobile Intel® PM55 Express Chipset] not Montevina chipset.
--2.1) Am I right (does G51V has PM55)?
This is not mentioned on Your review. And if it is true, is following possible:
--2.2) Can i put in this laptop [Kingston 2x2GB DDR3-1333MHz-SODIMM] 2x(KVR1333D3S9/2G)?
3) Please, post latest release CPU-Z (CPU, MainBoard, Graphics tab) screenshots for G51J.
4) Does this laptop support RAID0??? There are some posts that say - it is not possible!
Thanks! -

1. generic/B156HW01 V5
2. PM 55, dont see why not, although couldnt say if it would make things run faster.
3. see attached.
4. heh, not right now it doesnt. BIOS consists of letting you change boot order and enabling/disabling network boot, its pathetic. -
I'm happy about the reports I've heard of better screen quality, still a little peeved at Asus for the lack of RAID support.
Thank you Kevin for all your assistance! -
Hello kevin, I'm interested in buying this laptop with an 1333MHz Dual Channel Memory ram upgrade and was wondering if its a good idea if i use this daily 4-10 hours a day for online gaming for atleast 4 years, would it be able to last that long, this is my first laptop I plan on getting so i have very little experience.
Thanks -
ps. thats a lot of gaming! -
In Windows Experience Index on RAID and notRAID there is no difference!
Actually on my G50V Seagate 7400.4 1TB RAID0 - 8GB (DVD-R-DL-40files) file copy > paste on same partition is average 40MB/s.
I will test same file copy if RAID is no enabled ...
Of course HdTune shows average 125MB/s (and nonRAID G51J - 70MB/s.)
I like G50J, but i maybe will wait until CeBit 2010 - if nVidia will announce 360M with DirectX 11, then i will wait longer, because 260M with DirectX 10 is for Vista -
How does the keyboard feel? It seems sort of cramped after they added a number pad. Also how long does the battery last?

Another question about the keyboard - does it 'rattle' at all or make any noises while typing? The ASUS G50 I saw at Best Buy and all of the other ASUS notebooks there with island keyboards exhibited rattling.

I have a question.
Just got this laptop.. Installed the battery and when I plugged the ac adapter the laptop started automatically with no pressing power button... is this supposed to be like that? Battery didn't seem to be discharged completely, when I logged in to Windows it showed me 60% charged.
Thank you. -

Thank you. Is this a common problem with all ASUS laptops or only with this particular one? -

Could you measure the width of the laptop in centimeters and post that here?

Thanks for the review Kevin.
if you have any experience with the dell studio 1535 (1280X800) or similar laptop display from dell, how would you compare the viewing angles of the G51J to that? on the studio 1535 i currently use, if i wiggle the display vertically slightly the display's color/brightness change. its really annoying. -
That's a great review, anyway can anyone in this forum help me, I have a friend who is studying in Malaysia and he's looking for this laptop even if you know where he can buy this laptop from Singapore would be great.
Thanks

Very nice review btw.

Anyone else not a big fan of the pattern? I would prefer plain black, but thats just me

I'm not 100% sure about the 1.6GHz model, but the 2GHz model is able to clock itself as much as 2 bins up with three or four cores active, if it can. It's highest rated speed is for one core active (and it may not hit it of course, depends on it's temperature).
So probably that 2.8Ghz is for 1 or at most 2 cores doing something, if it's cool enough.
It's not really overclocking per se though, it's designed to do that. -
The i7 720QM is like this.
1 Core 2.8 max
2 Cores 2.4 max
3-4 Cores 1.73 max -
-
They are not disabled exactly, just in extremely low power consumption mode.
-
Yeah, and the way the question was written is sort of coming from the wrong side. It speeds ITSELF up if it's able to without going over a certain temperature and if it needs the performance. It's able to clock itself faster the fewer cores being heavily used.
So that way you get the best of all worlds. For modern stuff or multiple things at once, you've got a fast quad core, but for older programs that can't really use more CPUs, it's able to run itself faster. -
Oh i see now, the it works is really intriguing.
Thank you so much for explaining all that -
Apologies for the mundane question, but-- can any1 tell me what are the dimensions of the package in which this laptop ships? I need it in order to pick an intl shipment method. Cheers.

Just wandering,
The weight of the laptop as stated in the review (7lbs 8.2oz), does the weight include the power brick ? If not, how heavy is the power brick ?
Kind Regards. -
Hi there and welcome to the NBR Forums!
Normally is the weight of the laptop sans power brick.
For the power brick add 2-3 pounds normally. -
Thanks,
I like this laptop but portablility is important to me, I travel alot and dragging 8-10 pounds on my back is not ideal.
Anyway, is there any other recommandation for simillar laptops with simillar specs which is lighter and easier to carry around.
Kind regards. -
Another question,
Are solid state drives much lighter then normal hard drives ?
If the SSD is much lighter, I might replace one of the hard drives with a SSD to save weight.
And probably take the battery out and never use it to save weight as well -

i7
4830
up to 16GB RAM
500GB HDD
5.2 pounds without the slice, with the slice it comes at 7.4 I think... -
Does anyone know whether the GPU can possibly be upgraded in the future to a GTX 280m or better? Is it an MXM 3.0b GPU? Thanks.

SSDs do consume less and some weight slightly less to some noticeable. But capacity is limited...
-
-
OOHH I see. That is one of the best configurations. The system is faster overall in theory.

how does Intel Core i7-720QM (1.6GHzGHz, 1333MHz FSB, 6MB Cache) compare to Q9100 45nm "Montevina" Core2 Quad 2.26GHz w/12MB L2 On-die cache - 1066MHz FSB ?
-
Depends on what applications you're using, but as a general statement, I'd say it would be better to the Q9100 across the board.
-
Interesting question. I tried looking up, and it's hard to find direct comparisons.
For anything that's NOT using 4 cores, the i7 will absolutely be faster, no question (for example, a game that's only using 1 or 2 cores). If it's using 4 cores though, the older Penryn cores will be clocked close to 40% faster. So at that point, I'm not 100% sure. Nehalam is MUCH faster than Penryn at the same clock speed, but I don't know that it's always 40% faster. You could probably find situations were the faster clocked Penryn beats it (again, ONLY if in those situations all four cores are also being used-otherwise that i7 will speed itself up, and the clock speed advantage will be lost, and at that point i7 is the clear cut winner).
Personally I'd go for the i7 any day, although if there were other big considerations I might still consider a Penryn based quad core notebook. (Like the price, or the Penryn model having a much better GPU, or something like that. I mean I'd take a decent Penryn quad core with a great GPU over a mediocre GPU paired with a Nehalam quad core, that sort of thing.) -
yes. because Cod4= dual core optimized. GTA4 is optimized to use 3 cores so it willl get higher scores.

In fact, on quad threaded things, the QX93000 can see a slight edge over the 720 and 820, not the 920.
-
In terms of dual core vs quad core:
A Q9100 matches an X9100 in most games, but takes of in multithreaded software and games.
Q9100 > X1900 > T9900 (cost, heat, and battery life not taken into consideration) with the exception of Cod4, every other game at notebookcheck remains in the ballpark with the Q9100 and the fastest dual cores. -
I always wanted a gaming notebook due to the performance. But this one... I don't know about the print. I'm too old to have such a design.
-
This thread has been really helpful but I have a few more questions:
1. As far as battery life goes, on balanced with 70% screen brightness it only lasts 1 hr 32min, is there any way to know how much longer it would last on, say, a power-saver mode? I ask because if all i need to do is type notes in class i'd like it to last like 2 hours.
2. xotic pc also offers a 9-cell battery upgrade instead of the standard 6-cell. For this computer, anyone have any idea how much that would impact the battery life?
3. Random question, how long is the cord on the AC adapter? My previous laptop had a really short cord which made it really annoying in libraries and such where the plug wasn't right next to me.
Basically I'm looking for a computer that is powerful enough to comfortably play the games that are gonna come out while still having the battery life to last a class or two. This comp seemed perfect except for the slight hitch with battery life. -
