Microsoft restricts how much RAM a computer can have installed at the time of sale to 1GB if that computer is to use Windows XP.

After the sale a user can upgrade to more than 1GB however Intel's 945GSE chipset only supports a maximum of 2GB of RAM.

But no idea what kind of RAM is used I guess. Kingston's site doesn't show the "HE" but all the other models lists 2GB 667MHz DDR2 Non-ECC CL5 SO DIMM KVR667D2S5/2G.

Assuming it is the same as the 1000h as far as ram goes (which it most likely is)... ram is upgradeable, but there is only one slot. You can add up to 2gigs, but you need to get rid of the 1gig already included. It is standard 200 ddr2 667 ram.

I read somewhere in a purchaser's review that the Eee 1000HE came with a carrying case. Can anyone confirm and whether it's a decent case or just a sleeve? Thanks

I saw in an unboxing video that it came with a case. It looked like a zippered sleeve to me.

I guess I'll use that when I'll "travel light" and a proper case otherwise.

It is a very basic cloth sleeve with plain plastic zipper. I think it is fine for something off the bat if you dont already own a proper case, but it doesnt give enough protection like many notebook sleeves or cases.

Guys, if anyone has this laptop already, I need to confirm something. My asus doesnt seem to display red properly. When I tried Dead Pixel Buddy, and when I tested the red background, the color seemed too "orangish". If anyone can try that out and see if they have the same problem, please let me know so I can confirm if it is only affecting my laptop.

    Thanks.

1002HA has a 2 cell battery, the other two have 6 cell batteries....That alone kinda kills the 1002 for me, though it does look great.

Between the NC10 SE and the 1000HE, I think I'd go Asus, because they are mostly the same, but the Asus is going for ~$125 cheaper ($374 vs $499), and it has a (marginally) faster processor. Plus, that keyboard looks a lot better than the original 1000H keyboard, so it should be pretty much on par with the NC10 and HP mini 1000 keyboards.

This keyboard solves all of the problems that I have with the one on my 904HA. As soon as replacement keyboards become available in the aftermarket, I'll get one and slide it right into my 904. Perfection!!

Samsung is making a mistake if they don't drop the price of the NC10... soon.

I know and considering price wise the NC20 is crossing it out that makes it even worse.

When the NC10 was introduced it was a fair price. The EEE 1000 was actually about $600. Then prices just dropped like a rock, and Samsung didn't drop the prices as they went along. I suspect a price drop is coming.

I sure hope so. Otherwise it would be silly to buy an NC10 right now.

I'll wait a bit longer since I'd prefer the NC10... but pretty soon the 1000HE will be callin' my name.

The 1000HE was the redemption of the EEE lineup. It has been faaaaaaaaaaar too complex for too long now.

Any details on the 1003HE? I'm assuming 10", hard drive, and 6 cell battery from the name, but is it getting a new design?

Is that your RGB LED backlit XPS 16 that you are comparing it to? You will find huge differences in color between different notebooks depending on the panel used. Putting my T60 with the IPS panel next to anything always makes the other notebook screen look blue tinted and wacky color wise.

You really dont notice it as much if that is the only screen you are looking at. If you want to see something horribly awesome just compare notebooks or displays side by side at BestBuy where they run the same loop on everything. Some just look really off.

Regarding the new Asus netbooks from the link http://www.small-laptops.com/2009/02...ounces-1000hg/. if I'm not mistaken one of them mentions wireless a/b/g/n. if i remember right "a" and "b" are completrly different technologies - i.e. I don't think you can match them together. Windows 7 is expected to be out this fall with retail editions out before the holiday season. For netbooks they expect the Windows 7 "Starter" edition will be used in low end systems and Windows 7 Home for the pricier ones.

I also read somewhere that Asus will reduce the number of laptop and netbook models. Too many variations and models competing against each other.

Regarding colour differences between a 1000HE and another one, you can't really compare too much. It's like apples and oranges. or a Dell XPS or IBM/Lenovo T60 would probably have a better screen than a $375 netbook.

    They aren't that expensive. :)

The max resololution without an external screen is 1024*600. It has a "compressed" feature that allows 1024*768 but from what I heard, most movie players may not like it.

Already can use 2GB of ram, and dual core is unlikely since Intel does not want them in netbooks, yet.

2GB of RAM is insanely easy to upgrade to in any netbook. Amazon actually offer a deal for most popular netbooks to be coupled with 2Gb of RAM for 24$.

S/N of the on board sound? I am a musicain and didn't purchase this to use for recording but this is the quietest on board sc I've ever fired up. Forget the silly little speakers, I find them nasty. Butt. Hook this puppy up to a big system and you will be suprised. Normally you get a lot of background trash or a 60Hz hum. Not with this guy. Very little bit of hiss. The ultimate iPob for not mucho more cash.
I'm thinking of a second machine just for my front room stereo. Must be the lack of moving parts that makes it quiet.
The USB port is not a SATA.
Wishing for duo core? open the task manager and check out the the 2 CPU usage history displays? any one no why?
Also whats the word on 6 cells being repetedly drained to the max? My son says it's better to keep them toped up and repeted draining them will shorten life. I sure like being able to wander around unplugged for half the day.

The sound on my EEE is loud, try playing with the Realtek settings. Certain things like a youtube video may sound louder or softer than an mp3 depending on the Realtek setting. And the Atom is not dual core, it has hyper-threading which makes it act like a dual core by boosting performance.

I wonder if the 1000HE is capable to support a 500gb 7200rpm HD...and second..I wonder if the F9 recovery function would work after I install the new drive.
(I guess no, because that function is stored in the old HD...but want to confirm...)

    Thanks for reply!

Yes you can put a 500GB 7200rpm HDD in the 1000HE. Any 2.5" SATA HDD would fit in the netbook.

You won't be able to use the F9 function on the new HDD, but you can easily clone your old HDD to your new so you can avoid reinstalling your OS.
