Area-51m – 5750 and Smooth Creations Custom Paint Job <-Link :awgrey:
Smooth Creations:
I want to start off by saying, in my relatively short time on this planet, never in my life have I been so impressed by the quality of support, excellence in courtesy and level of professionalism in dealing with ANY company I have ever given money to. Smooth Creations has wowed me in every way shape and form from a customer standpoint and I could not be happier.
Please, PLEASE … understand the fact that Smooth Creations is not your ordinary custom design shop. Their level of quality and expertise is on the same level as Orange County Choppers. Custom built toys with a waiting list because the demand for the best in the biz is always high. If you have problems waiting a few weeks for your machine, stick to smaller, lesser known companies.
You may remember a certain NBR member named DarthBeavis who had his work showcased from SC and the outcomes was exquisite. DB's machines were the definitive reason that convinced me to customize my laptop to reflect something I enjoy. And what better two things to paint on my laptop than zombies. (Don’t ask its some weird obsessed I have)
My initial contact with Jim, owner of SC, began on August 21st when I sent him an e-mail stating the laptop I owned and I was interested in getting some work done. He responded eight minutes later with an initial quote and to send some pics in so he could get a better idea of what I was looking for. I sent him the pics and called him the following day to discuss over the phone some of the design work I wanted done. Jim explained to me that to use the artwork I wanted, the current lid on my 5750 would need to be removed and replaced with a Smooth Lid. I told him that sounded great and we discussed some additional details over the next few days. Jim told me that once they do a design, they never replicate the same design over again which I thought was totally cool seeing as; what would be the point of a custom painted laptop if someone wanted to copy you? Jim also gave me the option of cutting out the AW head on my 5750 and attaching it to the new smooth lid. We decided against it seeing the final design work. I sent my lappy to SC on the 29th of August it arrived at SC on September 9th (I paid $14.50 for ground shipping from Boston to OR, which looking back at it now was a mistake, I should have paid for overnight or at least next day… the longer your lappy is in the mail, the bigger of risk it could be damaged)
I called once a week to check on the status of my laptop, Jim personally picking up every time keeping me updated on the current process… telling me…"I think you're gonna like it…"
Ummm Jim… I "think" you're right.
I will be forever be sending my laptops to SC for work like this. No more selling laptops on ebay to pay for my next laptop…I am keeping them all and framing them under glass when I am through with them. This isn't a PC anymore…it's ART!
Over the next couple of days be writing more on my laptop for I literally just received this thing less than an hour ago. My heart is beating a mile a minute. If you think it’s exciting to get your Alienware back in the mail…wait till you send your lappy to SC.
Jim added a color change to the initial paint job… if you look at it from an angle you see a rainbow of colors…a type of chameleon styling if I’m not mistaken. The pics don’t really capture the essence of this laptop’s beauty. It would be like taking a picture of the grand canyon with a 3.1 Megapixle camera. My camera is 4.0MP but you can see perfectly well the craftsmanship on the graphic. So I’ve been writing for a few minutes straight already… I think I’m gonna go play with it. I dare you to try and get work like this somewhere else.

Nice. Or should I say SMOOOOOOTH! I want one!

LOL, I can feel your enthusiasm pumping down the broadband veins of the internet given the manner you wrote this. I have to say, that's some mighty impressive zombie art there, what an incredible level of detail. I don't think that's what I'd get exactly but, as you say, that's what makes it individual.
Thanks for the recommendation here. Can you give us a ballpark of how much something like this costs? -

Now why did you have to go and do that duke? Its looks so good, now i might have to do the same, and i just spent too much money already on my lappy. curse you i say....curse you!!!!

-
Very detailed... I don't think I'd ever spend that much
-
It really is an addiction. I have visions of my future house with 10-20 laptop lids under glass hanging on my walls...

I'm glad you NBR mods like my write up. Other forums did not take it to heart, and they have deemed my review as breaking the rules of their forums. H[F] administration needs to be reworked asap. Apparently they don’t like size 8 font, don’t like more than 1 link in posts and ban for using their “contact” button listed on every forum in the universe. Or maybe they are just anti-alienware. Why have size 8 option if they will edit your post? Or why even have a case-moding section if they don’t want to hear about a customers experience? They should update their “rules” section asap. It’s a f@@king disgrace… so again I commend you guys as a professional forum. You really got things straight here.

I can feel your excitement way over here in my own house.
The design and paintjob are beautiful. The zombies are a little...scary . I'd hate to be the guy they're standing over .
It really does look amazing though. I don't think I could ever get myself to spend that kind of money though. Well, maybe if money was no longer a concern... . -

Thanks for the compliments to our forums Duke. No problem at all with the way you posted; as a matter of fact, the font size does a lot for your post.
That's a wonderful paint job. It looks great from the pictures but I can tell it needs to be seen in the flesh to be really appreciated. Thanks for posting. -
nice paint job!

They certainly do! I submitted my review that I wrote along with a bunch of pics. Hopefully it will be posted soon. I also have a video of my brother-in-law and I opening up all the boxes and unveiling my MJ at like 3 in the morning! I just got back from Canada and I was so tired but I had to see my baby! I am trying to compress the video footage so I can post it on youtube as a link from the review.

yeah, good stuff duke!

That's beautiful man.
$500 though....ouch... -
That is amazing paint job duke. When i read $500, i was a bit shocked, but then converting it into £, it seems about right; especially if you will be using it as decoration in your home when your done with it.
I absolutely love it - the zombie idea is great (obsession or not) and it looks like they have really exceeded themselves. Congratulations on having the best looking notebook on the forum (sorry darthbeavis) -
*points at DB* naa na na na naaa na -

Would love to know how either of you got a hold of these people...I sent e-mails about once a week for a month and posted to their forum...zero response. I eventually went with Justin at XoticPC to get my notebook painted.

ROFL. I hope that was a joke.
Smooth creations did an excellent job, looks great. -
WOW
thats an awesome paint job
superb attention to details, looks great
though, i've always wondered about people's obsession with zombies... do you like...
...want to get eaten or something?
anyway, all these custom paint job compared to dell with the ugly white rim is like compairing a lambo to a pinto (ryhmes!!!) -
lets just say i wish i was a zombie...

Commissions for quality artists aren't cheap. Add in the fact that you need a specialized artist to handle laptop art ...
Course. Not something most people would want to throw $500 on. But most people don't need to commission quality artists for a paint job, either. -
Very nice work, I've been really wanting to do something with my notebook for a while, my first option was a laser etch, but haven't found a reputable place yet.
I really would go with Smooth Creations, they sound, and of course with much evidence, do an amazing job on everything they touch(magic hands eh?). Though my only conerns were price, and how eye catching it will be(I'm trying for a sleek, subtle and 'elegant' look, no zombies for me haha ). I've already emailed Jim a few times, got a quick response, looking forward for details and everything.
Hopefully I can scrounge up some cash(I'm tempted to buy a Wii or the paintjob...). -
I'm going to send in my laptop in to Smooth. Even though my laptop isn't new, and it would be better spending the $300 - $500 towards a new laptop, nothing beats the look of the laptop! Hopefully everything turns out well.
-
I think a lot of the cost was due to the phase-changing paint. But even if you send your laptop into Smooth, they'll think of ideas and feed them back to you. Thats what they did to DB's if im not mistaken.
-
My laptop went thru Hypersonic (which sucked as it cut of my communication with Smooth). I did hand-deliver my desktop to them as I will my new mountain mods rig. -
it's awesome! -
I know this is'nt lappy related but after I seen this post I went to there website and I looked at there creations. After I senn them I was in aw at the detail. So I wanted to give them something new and something that I use 24/7. My Mobiblu Cube2 multimedia player. I've been talking to an assistant (I think) there and she is talking to the paint shop about it.
Here is a pic that shows how small it is, but is my older cube not the one above.

Besides painting, does SC do any other mods to computers/laptops?
-
Wow nice! Did you get a matching mouse or anything? Oh and how about a matching cell phone, mmm! And a matching coffee grinder and...
Oh yeah I do wonder how much to put something simple on a coffee grinder, coz mine's black and that's pretty boring. I think some kinda white and green crazy stripy bubbly design would be sooo cool! But from the reviews of my grinder, it'll break in half a year anyway so perhaps that's not the best idea so nevermind. I'm also not crazy about the grinds, and it sounds stupid when grinding compared to the ugly one I got that cost half as much. So stay away from the Bodum coffee grinder if ya know what's good for ya!
Ok so, what's another good thing to paint, I wonder, other than a computer and a media player? There's not much that you can do with an iron, and coffeemaker just doesn't seem like it's worth it... Winter break's coming, I'll temporarily cease to be broke, so that money's gotta go somewhere!

Amherst has a place called 'the hanger' that has the best chicken wings on the planet... you can get them in like 32423 different flavors, and they come in different sizes based on plane names... the 'concord', 'boeing', etc -

Must say that your paint job is awesome!
On one hand I am very jealous, yet I'm not enviable of the stress of you trying to keep it scratch free LOL -
I got my laptop back from Smooth. The artwork is absolutely amazing!
