    2016 and Beyond: What are we missing in laptops/notebooks?

    The list Mr. Fox already made is a good starting point, but I think these are also necessary:
    1. I would like to add RGBLED 16:10 (1920x1200) displays back on the field. 4K is stupid on small laptops. WUXGA is the sweetspot for flagships. No crappy WLED backlight, I mean a full spectrum RGBLED backlight. I don't care if it is TN or IPS, but there CANNOT BE ANY LIGHT BLEED (cough, Alienware 18, 17R2). G-sync/Freesync capable, 120Hz

    2. HDMI in feature. This needs to come back, I loved having this available.

    3. Edge to edge glass. No f**cking bezels. The cleaner the lines, the better. Less places for crap/dust to accumulate. I just have to wipe my M18x with a microfiber cloth and I'm done.

    4. NONCHICLET KEYBOARD. Screw the industry for thinking island/chiclet keyboards are a good idea. I still miss keystrokes on those kinds of keyboards. Old style is superior.

    5. Built in ATSC tuner. Yes, because I want my PC to do everything.


    And no, I don't care how much it costs. Just build me the ultimate computer. If clevo could buy the chassis design from Dell for the M18x R2, they should. And fit a new board with updated components and engineering.

    Footnote: I think given the chassis size of the M18x, if clevo built an 18" model, they could design a liquid cooling system to fit where the optical drive would normally be. Would be an amazing feat of engineering to put a pump and reservoir in that tiny space. I know it has been done in the M18x, shame it never came to market.

    What exactly is the difference between chiclet and non-chiclet keyboards when you're not looking at it? You're not supposed to touch the area between keys...

    System bios to be as openly compatible to MXM upgrades as a typical desktop is to new cards. Most systems have an issue with this card or that time for that to end..

    Return of socketed mobile CPU chips. Perhaps AMD can bring something to the table as Intel and Nvidia are responsible for the dire state of choice these days.

    Building a notebook like building a desktop. So not paying ridiculously much for upgrades while ordering from the factory and paying for things you dont want or need on your machine. Giving you ultimate freedom in what parts you want and what not. I would for sure get something different from i got now.

    Oh look I happen to have not posted here yet. Let me rectify that real quick.
    I want:
    • 120Hz/144Hz, 1080p/1440p, 8-bit colour depth, high colour gamut (100% sRGB, 100% Adobe RGB, 72% NTSC or above) 13" through 18" laptop panels with decent viewing angles and ultra low motion blur/anti-ghosting tech. You know, like the decent desktop panels that are around? They should cost less due to lack of a bezel, smaller screen size, and lack of need for on-screen options (like brightness etc), etc so they shouldn't be $300+ like desktop panels are.
    • I want dGPU-only machines with enabled iGPU for Quicksync and Browser-based acceleration etc, BUT the iGPU must not be attached to anything; similar to how desktops have it (MUX switching to iGPU-only etc can still be an option, of course).
    • Triple antennae a/b/g/n/ac wifi + bluetooth cards. Since the intel 5300N, wifi + bluetooth + 3 antennae has simply not happened (that I am aware of).
    • Plug and play, non-inf-modding-required GPU upgrades via MXM. I don't know why this is so difficult/needs BIOS mods/etc, so I'm asking for it.
    • Socketed mobile CPUs to come back. Without gimping, or stupid expensive prices. $1000 for the mobile equivalent of a $300 desktop CPU is more than highway robbery.
    • Why not? Internal liquid cooling. Somehow. As long as it works, isn't going to break, and is easy to service/upgrade components that it's applied to.
    • Keyboards like this. Do you see that keyboard? I could do Final Atomic Busters on that keyboard. Just add some backlight support, maybe, and you're good.
    • Speaking of keyboards, I'd like a large key rollover thanks. Seven or eight key rollover should be sufficient, but more is always better. This is a direct connection to the system and the system's range of usable keyboards is essentially tuned to that system, plus it isn't limited like USB connections are... there shouldn't be so many problems holding multiple keys at once.
    • My D900F had one of the best mics I've ever used. I want good microphones again. Just because it's a laptop mic doesn't mean it needs to suck like no other
    My brain's running dry right now, mainly because all the performance-related stuff has been cleared by Mr. Fox and the performance lovers already.

    I think it's time we stop having everything about laptops soldered and proprietary. Modularity is not a problem. Upgrade-ability is not a problem. BIOSes don't need to be locked down. If a laptop owner is stupid enough that he or she would break something by fiddling with a BIOS, then they'd do it on a desktop, and you don't see those so locked down. So there is no excuse.

    I mean not when running the laptop ofcourse :D But like a module with cooling etc integrated party so it can be isnerted in anylaptop without tinkering too much with the internals. Imagine just a small thin gbox with the gpuboardinside and a heatplate that touches the to be cooled components and can be directly connected to the laptops internal cooling while installing the card. Make it an industry standard so that a lot of options are available just like desktop graphic cards etc.

    That isn't a huge problem if you accept machines being about the same size/weight as the Dell Inspiron e1705. Well the problem is that almost nobody would. :/

    Thin, light machines with reasonable power? Then it becomes physically impossible sadly, the best alternative then is having a partially upgradable machine by making the motherboard swappable.

    For those that haven't seen it yet, there is a new poll available. This is for everyone, not just Eurocom customers. Let your voices be heard. Such intelligence can be used by Eurocom as leverage to influence other major players in the industry and may even help turn the tide on the overwhelming prevalence of crippled BGA turdbooks that are such a huge impediment to awesome performance. It would certainly be nice if there was less pathetic garbage littering the landscape and more excellent high performance options to choose from.

    No, it does not. I have delidded the 6700K and it runs @ 4.7GHz with c-states disable 24/7 and has no thermal issues in the Sky X9 using Liquid Ultra thermal paste. They cannot sell it with a delidded CPU because that voids the warranty from Intel.

    Delidding the 6700K is as easy as falling off of a log, but I would not recommend it unless or until you confirm you did well in the silicon lottery and have a CPU you're ready to live with forever. If you don't get a good one, you can try your luck on a replacement and sell the original on eBay. If it has been delidded, it might be more difficult to sell for a decent price.

    I don't have a long wishlist.

    1- Toolless panel removal.
    2- SteamOS preinstalled for dual booting on gaming laptops and driver support. [Putting a Linux based OS on gaming machines would provide the biggest incentive for publishers to provide support]
    3- Longer warranties [3-4 years] on BGA units.
    4- HD+/UHD 17" options

    While I would like the ability to upgrade, as my G73 lasted most of 5 years ...I know a laptop could get pretty ratty with the wear and tear of very heavy use. It isn't a huge priority for me. [...your mileage my vary]

    18 or 20 inch monitor for the laptop. Something as big or bigger than the M18x for sure.
    It must be black!
    As much desktop based hardware in it as possible.
    Metal Casing for durability.
    Plenty of air circulation (it doesnt matter if 2 inches thick if its got the airflow)
    3 SSD drives and at least 1msata.
    120~144hz monitor with 4k
    touchscreen!
    Easy and Quick access to the GPU and CPU areas (no 20min dissasembly job!)
    A universal standard layout inside that allows the machine to be easily upgradable to newer tech after 4 or 5 years without having to replace the whole thing including the motherboard.
    Dual or if theres room triple SLI.

    I would LOVE to see what Google is doing with Project Ara, the modular cellphones, equivalent in laptops.

    Imagine if you could buy the chassis, the GPU, CPU, Battery, other modules, screen and everything that fit a universal modular patern to build your own laptop. That would bring them closer to PCs. Actually, even better than on PCs (if it executed like they're doing with Ara)

    When you think on Clevo Barebones, it may sound similar, but it is not. It still require lots of specific technical assembly that if not performed by the vendor you loose your warranty and such.

    For instance, even though I know how to change some stuff myself, I couldn't do other things like change or adapting/modding for a different screen.

    Could the reseller buy a higher binned/delidded cpu from siliconlottery.com so the buyer doesn't need to open/modify it immediately? ( takes longer/costs the buyer more of course )

    Note:half of these ideas are completely insane and will probably be outrageously expensive.

    1) Dual MXM slots Full desktop GPUs like a Titan X/980 TI KINGPIN on a laptop. Using the additional MXM powerplug and 2 x MXM which should be enough to power it.
    2) Return of RGBLED and if not true 10 bit monitor(way too expensive), true 8 bit IPS monitor.
    3) X99 laptop with broadwell 10 core.
    4)Once efficiency on TEC units improves, a TEC cooler on a laptop with proper insulation etc.
    5)144hz IPS 1440p+ monitor. 4K is a bit too much for laptop but 1440p should be good.
    6)Mechanical keyboard on larger laptops.
    7)Dual TB3 with support for SLI eGPUs.
    8)A full overclocker's laptop line from Clevo(and not like the messy GX700..), like we have ROG/KINGPIN/Corsair Platinum on desktop.

    Would be nice if vendors provided the option for a de-lidded CPU from SiliconLottery of the high clock variety :)

    I wonder if a delidding tool for motherboards, half his tool screwed into the motherboard heatplate screw holes would be viable for delidding already soldered CPU's?

    That is a really sweet tool, but delidding a 6700K is so easy I would almost be ashamed of spending money to do what I can do in just a few minutes with a thin razor blade that cost me almost nothing. If a person were doing a high volume of delidding, that tool would be a good investment.
    Sounds like it might be a good way to damage the soldered connection on a BGA CPU. I would be a bit leery of trying that for fear of destroying the motherboard. Using a thin razor blade would likely be safer in the case of a BGA CPU.

    It might work, but I don't know how fragile or subject to fracture that joint is. Even hanging a heavy heat sink on a desktop BGA CPU (yes, a few of them exist) can weaken that joint. The "snap" when it turns loose might not be good for it, and the leverage of having the tool attached might increase the risk, but I really don't know. Nor do I plan to ever own a machine with a BGA CPU to find out. :vbwink:

    Are there any laptops with a BGA Skylake desktop CPU even out there? The mobile CPUs typically do not have an IHS.

    i while back i saw a sager notebook with an i7-990x for the x58 platform and i was like , this has to be fake xD , afterwards i learned some notebooks will actually use desktop cpus. back then x58 platform had a wide spectrum of cpus , now there is a socket for mid range, and another one for high end cpus

    hopefully, Dell's smash hit XPS 15 will hopefully will force OEMs to get the technology, price and balance right.

    with the internal components being same ie: Intel cpus and nvidia gpus (dont you love monopolies ! ) mainstream and non extreme tech crowd will go for either smaller footprint or smaller price.

    The reality is non hedt desktops are on the way out, as laptops are now with 90% of the performance range of 6700. The demand is being replaced by near high end laptops. XPS 15, Zenbook Pro, Macbook Pro, HP Z Studio are the kind of laptops that are going to have wide appeal.

    Clevo's P750DM is an engineering marvel. They really need to market them and get a badly needed design win with one of the major oems like Asus.

    personally, I'm now looking forward to Iris Pro 580 laptops.

    ok my wish list is very simple :

    -hassle free gpu upgrades : no need to worry if x gpu will work on x laptop as long as it has the standard mxm form factor it should be upgrade-able.

    -ability to test secondary gpu on right mxm slot: i dont know if this has been adressed on latest models but having to swap secondary gpu to primary slot for testing purposes is soooo tedious and time consuming (removing heatsink)

    -bigger wattage power adapters !!

    -dual cpu laptops

    -mobile xeon cpus : why not? maybe you have a small enterprise and you dont have that much space for a data center , a low profile laptop/server with a mobile xeon cpu could be the best option.

    Option to not include the internal webcam/speaker/subwoofer/fingerprint reader? Others might prefer to use high quality external DAC and amplifier for their headphones or speakers.

    I might be a but late to this thread, but here is my input. I have not read the entire thread. We suppose everything can come true in future, and no one will complain about me being too utopic.

    1. All companies should use the exact same firmware, same design, same hardware components, so that regardless of what I buy, I am able to change to something else as easy as it is with desktop.

    2. Water cooling inside the laptop without making it huge, and without making it too heavy to carry around. Also, use liquids that can be cooled by electric cooling effect, not only by classic termoconductivity. Usage of a pump that is not too noise is also a must, as I am an audiophile and need my silence in my life.

    While at it, use hybrid with both fans, water cooling and if outer materials allow, make them be termoconductive too to get rid of as much heat as possible. Plastic is way too termo-insulating to be practical. Add small lines of metals to make the entire case farraday cage thingy so that no electromagnetic shock will destroy laptop.

    3. Absolutely everything should not only be compatible between every single company, but everything should be modular. Not only modular, lego style modular. Need a cpu, buy a black box with for screws, attack it to the main body. Same for GPU, and everything else.

    Cooling and everything can be done by cooling ports if water cooling is implemented, so no reason to worry about overheating, even if this would ever be implemented. Again all these boxes should have the same size, no compromise between companies, no compromise between 15 and 17 and other size, only main chasis should be different and allow more or less pieces.

    4. At least enough power for everything, without having to carry more than one PSU. Enough power for OC, and for multi core CPU from X series not only K series, all without making the entire laptop too thick to be portable

    5. Everything should not weight a lot, let's say 6KG at most, because after this point it will not be portable anymore.

    6. Reinforced magnesium - carbon fiber - steel on all constructions, so that it is as light and possible, but as hard as possible.

    7. Display should all have 100% human vision color coverage, not only 100% adobergb, and while at it, implement 16 bit color display, and do not cheap out on making them. There are enough technologies making this possible. No AMOLED here, because it suffers from after images after using it for a long period of time and at full brightness.

    Display -> Modular. Under all circumstances, I want to change it in less than 5 minutes with a new one, should the need arise. All displays should have at least 120Hz refresh rates + variable sync + 3d compatibility + at least 4K if not 8K while at it.

    Add a module that will attack 3 displays. Like, have a main display, put one on right side, one on left side, have 3 display setup. All connected to the main, having all of the above advantages, and connect a mini display above for notifications and other toolbar type stuff. While at it, all of this package should be possible to carry with you in the same spot, even if it adds to thickness. These extra display things can be even half of the main one, but to expand the view more will always be welcome.

    While still at display segment, make hinges really durable. Reinforce them with whatever you must, use more hinges and use steel-aluminium-carbon hinges that can support all of the above, or make the multi display idea have desk thingy support for each additional display.

    8. While at it, give laptop a bit of machine learning and a bit of AI to help you through your work. Not windows cortana stealing your data AI, but real AI. Also, no company stealing your data for marketing. Everything should be encompassed with a module of firewall, that should purge all connections that user does not enable. All data transmissions should be secured and encrypted without loosing any speed.

    9. Audio part. Well, ESS9018 the minimum for a DAC, Muses02 + 1 W of headphone amplification should be the minimum for headphones. Add true line out, and use bulk transfer when using an external DAC to improve audio playback. Use an angled speakers design, very good quality speakers and software for them, up to audiophile levels, and while building a 1KW PSU, you can also add at least 15-50W speakers that use both silk domes for treble and a kevlar smaller driver for bass. This way, you should be able to pull full 50Hz-20Khz linear audio reproduction with software enhancements leaving space up for imagination. Also, speaker system should be as clear and sound as good, at least as a Sennheiser HD650 or a Sennheiser ie800, if not better. All modular, speakers, DAC, AMP, everything modular.

    10. Add anti-theft option to scan for DNA or retina at startup, not only fingerprint, and have a module that will send you the GPS data if someone tries to use it without you knowing, and send everything in that moment to your smartphone, and give you a fast way to send everything to police by 1 button click, all approved by all police in all states, like a trusted system. This should not cost more than 5$ a month for having a small nano-SIM card within to do this for you. All components should be authorised to be used by you with the same test, and make it 512 bit encryption. This one might make second hand sale complicated, but with everything being modular, there will be far less need for this. Modules should be able to be sold and confirmed by the new system, by AI communication between systems, and as long as AI should be build right, it could confirm the paypal payment and that both parties are in agreement, so no need to complicate things. Also AI should check both the selling party, and the buying party for trustability.

    11. Smartphones and every gadget should use a faster than USB3 connection, with more reliable ports, and the entire ports part should be modular, so if you do break a port, just change it. Same about power plug on laptop, modular, so if you break the power plug, you just change it. Motherboard should be modular too, thought this should be the most complicated part.


    I think that if they made them like this, everyone would be happy.
    So there you have it, the most cutting edge laptop evolution that I can think of right now, to be practical and a power leviathan in every possible direction.

    Except for the display idea, everything seems rather achievable in next two years with a bit of work. Display idea is not exactly achievable due to size constraints and because it would become pretty thick if implementing those ideas right now.

    Also, I want better matte coating. By better, I mean way more smaller particles, there is matte coating on which the coating itself has bigger granules than the individual pixels, and it is a major letdown.

    Okay, then that idea can be dropped. But the rest of ideas should be plausible.

    I thought that farraday cage would mean protection against electric static charges, not isolation against all types of electromagnetic pulses. I just found out how it is used to protect wifi cards and ssd against electrostatic charges.

    Someone creating modules and setting up a market standard is a must. I can create blueprints based off my engineering degree for most of the ideas posted above. Especially changing how cooling works is important, because it could allow for another degree of modularity and another degree of performance without having to sacrifice size, weight or noise.

    I can blueprint that in under 6KG, your average 17.3" chasis, and average thickness. It would never be slim, but what I have in mind will never be as thick as the Xeon CPU laptop, which is really thick.

    People will not really take this into consideration, but if we can change the way cooling works inside, and ports inside, we can make things modular without much hassle. And very strong build.

    Though, I would not want to see the final price on this thing. But that is not the point. Enthusiasts could have everything they dreamed of, portable, and within reasonable dimensions.

    Cooling has long since been the problem here, because while P750 from clevo had a very cool design with easy to open hatches for every component, it still needed a bit more cleaning, and it needed to be more modular. Not to mention that every company has their own standard these days, and this is hurting the customers if they want to cross a company, and it creates a very segregated aftermarket.

    Forget the term laptop, build a PC into a Briefcase with the following :
    • Full size, detachable, RGB, wireless keyboard, built into the shape of the Briefcase (with the keys facing inward & protected during transport obviously).
    • Triple, thin, OLED/G-Sync, 100Hz+, 1-4ms, 4K displays. The 2 side displays would pull, or pop out from the sides of the briefcase.
    • 6700K and full, removeable desktop (not MxM) GPUs in SLI, all 3 items watercooled. Would like to be able to flip a panel open on the outside of the briefcase, slide the GPUs in (like a hot swap hard drive), not have to worry about connecting an SLI bridge and easy no-fuss watercooling connections inside those bays. Obviously special water blocks would be needed, as well as special connections for power.
    • Internal PSU, with fan holes cut in exterior of Briefcase of coarse. Allow for any modular PSU of the right dimensions and include very short cables sticking out in the PSU bay area to connect with the desired PSU. These short PSU cables should be available for replacement parts too.
    • A panel/door in the exterior that opens, revealing a storage cavity for your favorite mouse.
    • Ventilated plates in the exterior, where you can unscrew it and screw a desktop case fan to the inside side of the plate and plug it into a small waiting fan connector.
    • 4 PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe connections, 4+ hot-swap bays for 2.5" drives and a dedicated raid controller.
    • Make the half with the displays in it able to stand up at various degrees much like a laptop cooling pad would offer.
    • Built-in surge protection.
    • Make the exterior design of this beast look awesome, with RIG lighting and call it the "eSports Command Center" lol.
    • The best speakers & sub you can fit in this thing and a well amplified headphone jack, mic jack AND combo jack (to save us the trouble).

    But dude, some of these would either make the thing wayyyy thicker than you want it, and wayyyyy heavier. Though, you could actually build this yourself, given enough time, skill, money and of course patience.

    I can even build it for you, but it would weight at least 10Kg, be the actual size of a large briefcase, and be pretty noisy. Not to mention the final costs of a prototype for this. But it is doable, given you can find the rarest part, which are the screens. But if using a thick briefcase as model, you can simply use 3 AUO B173ZAN01_0, which are 100% adobeRGB, and create small bezels and back carbon-alu covers for them.

    Keep in mind a single one of those weights 0.5KG though, and it all would be so exhausting heavy in the end.

    The whole idea is basically a desktop PC being made extremely portable for both us and the staff in charge of carrying the equipment for Esports competitors. Reducing the number of items that you have to carry to a LAN party, or big events, but maintaining no sacrifice in performance. These could also be used by business professionals that have their own office, or desk. When they need to take their work home with them, it's on the same exact computer that they were already using at work. Yes, I know, it will be heavy, but this is a much better idea than the sacrifices you would put up with with those all in one units, where everything is crammed inside the monitor and you are still making sacrifices.

    Current gaming laptops can be brought easily around with you, but with the limitations on how much battery life you're going to get, especially with laptops like my Clevo P870DM-G, you're going to have to plug yourself in somewhere for sure. If you have to plug yourself in somewhere anyway, wouldn't you rather have 3 big beautiful screens and all the other stuff that I've mentioned? If you want something lighter for short-term use you are pretty much looking at either a gaming laptop like the Clevo as a second gaming portable if you are rich, or you are going to go with just a regular laptop, tablet, or smartphone. Let's face it.... If you are somewhere and actually plan on doing some serious gaming, you are going to be in that spot for a long enough period of time, that you may as well have every thing available to you that this briefcase PC would offer. Also I was not referring necessarily to a computer being built inside of a briefcase. I'm talking about a computer that exhibits many of the design features of a laptop, but is actually a PC shaped like a briefcase.

    I wanted to build a laptop over to an aluminum briefcase, the problem I had was that locally (Namibia) there are no suppliers of aluminum briefcase. I tried to speak to a local aluminum dealer to see if I can build my own case, and once they heard what I had in mind, they refuse to sell me even a nut.

    What would I like to see in a future laptop?

    • They should add 4 slots for memory modules.
    • They should really build the casing from aluminum instead of plastic and then spray a thin aluminum coating. (This should help with the heating problem almost all laptops seems to have.)

    • They should add at least 2 fans, 3 if they are really generous.
    These are my ideas.
    They can solve the battery problem if they use proper batteries instead of what they can get for cheap in bulk.

    Aluminium is bad for constructing a case. It is heavy, very easy to bend, and a good electric conductor. You would have a short circuit fast with a full alu case, and even if not for short circuit, you would still have to carry a full ALU case with you, which is heavy. P870 from Clevo already has 5KG without power brick, due to heavy cooling and other components. If you start from it, and add another 3-4 KG for case, you end up with a 10KG thing that you cannot lift from ground. (my training weight is 10KG for one hand, and I cannot do more than 14 lifts per hand at once)

    Best thing there is are polymer (plastic) cases, reinforced with carbon fiber. Very light, does not keep hear inside, very strong material, no electrical conductivity. The bad part is that a high end polymer is more expensive than aluminium or other metals.

    Why have an external GPU, that you cannot take with you anywhere, when you can have high end dedicated GPUs inside laptop (Clevo P870DM-G)?

    Serious gaming laptops have 2-3 fans already :D

    Serious gaming laptops have 4 memory slots already :D

    My bad, here in Nam we don't even get Alienware, serious gaming laptop would set us back 25k to 45k easily. Since it's usually above what we can afford, they simply just don't import. All what we get is Celeron, iCore3, iCore5 and the really expensive iCore 7 with basic specs from around 5.5k to 17k.

    I guess I really need to consider moving to the UK where its much cheaper hahahahaha

    That is not great.. I really hope they advance the technologies, but I think that prices are will always be high for the higher end laptops, as they see it as a niche and they see it as a high chance of making profit.

    I would wish for lower prices too~
