So if I have a GT60 16F4 barebones with an 880m I should wait? The bios isn't working for those people? When are they going to release them, and also I'm planning on a 980m not a 970m if that matters.

This model should be able to handle 970M/980M quite alright because it's a more recent SKU.

Quick question. I never really gave any attention to my CPU temps and GPU temps before the upgrade so I was wondering if this was normal. When gaming with turbo fan on i get wicked low temps, like 65-70c. With turbo off on certain games (Crysis 3 mainly) the fan is really quiet and the GPU gets up to around 80-81c and the CPU gets all the way up to 90-91c. At this point the fan will ramp up a little and then slow down to maintain those temps. It doesn't seem to be a bad paste job because the fan has absolutely no trouble maintaining a 90c CPU, I'm really happy with how quiet it is, and my performance is outstanding, but does that CPU temp seem a bit high? Shouldn't the fan ramp up sooner, or is that about right?

    Hey Talon
Thanks so much for this, it's exactly what I needed. By the way, I'm the guy that posted this thread
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/gam...rading-my-msi-gt70-0nd-219us.html#post9877413

I am so looking forward to doing this now :D

I will admit I'm a little nervous though. I've built numerous desktops but never messed with laptops before. But I feel confident that if I follow your directions to the T I'll be fine.

    This is my current system:
    GT70 0ND-219US
    GPU: GTX 675m 2GB
    CPU: I7-3610
    Memory: 12GB
    OS: WIN7 64bit

My only real question is do you think I should update to WIN 8.1 first?

Thanks again bro!!! You just saved me a bunch of cash :)

Mess with your nb now. Mine is a GT60-16F3 (Ivy-Bridge proc). Works perfectly with my nb. and no throttling with the latest ec firmware I got.

Eh guys I've got a question...

Will an 8 Gig dd3 mem's enough fore Windows 8.1? I've experience that WIn 8.1 seems to use more resources compared to windows 7. Is it much better to upgrade the mems rather then getting an extreme proc? thanks

Omega, I would say 8gb is a tad bit on the low side these days. I would suggest picking up another 8gb stick, or if you are using 2x4 for 8gb, then simply buy another or even 2 4gb sticks.

I have similar temps :) since the stock fan profile favors sound, it gets rather hot. Those temps seem inline with a lot of users but are also very dependant on ambient temps. There are several fan tools you can use to create your own fan profile so that fan operates hoe you wish.

Keep in mind there is a different fan speed% for the cpu and gpu, so depending on which one is getting hotter, it's how it reacts.

Thanks! Actually, it turned out to be that my Dragon Gaming Center was messed up from an unrelated driver update. I re-installed that and now the fan keeps my temps at 80c, perfect for a notebook as far as I'm concerned.

I do have another question if you guys don't mind. I've noticed in the Dragon Gaming Center that with the new 970m, the hybrid power says it's available but never kicks in. Do you guys think this is because of the Clevo bios on the card, or because the 970m is that much more efficient than the 870m it came with?

Yes the second option is more plausible ;)
It means your system stays within the designated 180W power limit and on full load there's no help from the battery.
80° as temps are perfectly fine :)
If I leave my fan at default profile I get 90° on both the 4700mq and 780m of my GT60.

Here's your request.. two videocards read properly by modded inf drivers under windows 8.1.

    gpuz 970m.png

I don't want to uninstall and reinstall NVidia drivers again for you to see the "Standard Graphics Card" read by GPU'z.

thanks omega. Im still trying to figure out if this is going to work on my NB. our info looks similar. however, your MB is the ms-16f3 where mine is the ms-17621. i have been trying to find specs for both but have not had any luck. would hate to get stuck with a card i cant use. if anyone has a clue let me know, I am not nearly as knowledgeable about this stuff as many of you but im trying to learn. Thanks everyone for sharing though.

It's going to work. update your bios first to the latest one found in msi website. One did successfully upgraded his videocard with a 970m and with a locked nb bios from the other forum, same as your spec's.

I can confirm that the 980m works on the MSI 16F3 (GT60). I bought the card from the link you provided since they have a nice price and seeing how you gto the 970m to work from them. After a couple of hours, everything works great and it wasn't necessary to flash vbios but I did flash mobo bios and EC firmware. Thanks for all the info, I found from a lot of stuff posted on various sites by you while I was googling lol. Thanks again tho and in case anyone was wondering, I updated from a 680m that burnt out to a 980m in a GT60 0ne.

Yeah. don't attempt to update your clevo vbios to msi. The msi vbios is not compatible with our generation nb. I don't know why but it definitely loves clevo vbios LOL

From what i can tell the only difference is the pre-installed heatsink on the Clevo model. You have to peel off this bracket on the back that is a bit nerve wracking and is clearly factory installed. Other than that there doesn't seem to be a difference. I didn't have to flash a vbios or anything. I know Talon (OP) did but I wonder if he had flashed the newest motherboard bios first if he would have had to do anything with the vbios. Unless you have a GT72 I wouldn't wait for an MSI kit. MSI has no plans for an official kit for the GT60/GT70 and i promise the GT72 kit is going to be more expensive for no real advantage.

You can peel that off with a hair dryer/heat gun :)
No difference between the mxm boards. Talon didn't update his BIOS so he had to rely on modded drivers.
The MSI kit is going to cost a bit.

He did update his bios later when he found out that after updating the vbios from clevo to msi got problems with windows (blank screen but normaly booting). How do I know? cos he asked me to send a vbios of my 970m.

After updating, then all of his problem where gone. And besides his got a much updated nb (haswell).

The "posts" that meet the card's vram and VRMs are in different arrangements depending on which chip type they are paired with.

The heatsinks for the GK104 based cards (your first link) is for everything with a GK104 chip from 670MX to 880M.

The heatsinks for the GK106 based cards (your second link) is for the 765M and 770M.

The new heatsinks will fit all GM104 cards (970m and 980m along with any future ones).

The posts will be in a different arrangement for each type and will require modding if used with another chip type.

New Original MSI Heat Sink nVidia GTX780 GTX770 E31-0406580-Y31 | eBay

Yes this is the one I used, and this will work perfectly.

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/MSI-GT70-GP...main_0&hash=item5414e586b7&afsrc=1&rmvSB=true

This is also the same heatsink and will also work perfectly. Though it looks used and more beat up. Since they are the same price I would go with the other brand new heatsink myself. Unless you need the heatsink faster because this one is located in Cali, while the other one will def take longer on shipping.

    http://www.aliexpress.com/store/pro...TX780M-E310-406580-Y31/207462_1924823030.html

Here is another one of the exact heatsink for even cheaper.

AFAIK all 3k models from MSI are IPS
Correct me though if I'm wrong :)
All factory sealed heatsinks have thermal components already applied. Try and get in touch with majster_msi. He usually has that heatsink for even cheaper :)

I'm from Brazil, and I am in doubt whether it is better to buy a HD 7970M for my msi GX640 or just go for a gtx 970m?

    I would advice.

    Upgrade Core i7 920XM + HD 7970M or Core i7 720QM + GTX 970m ???

    My power supply is 180W
    Excuse my English.
My sister is traveling 1st February to the US! Laptops in Brazil are very expensive!

Run games Dead Rising 3, GTA 5, Battefield 4 , Fary cry 4 , etc.

I also have a desktop and I can play some heavier games on the desktop.

Another option is to buy the HD 7970M for my laptop and a GTX 970 for my desktop

I wouldn't purchase either card for that laptop. Honestly I would sell it for whatever you can get for it, and upgrade to a new system. That laptop is untested with a 970m as far as I know so you run the risk of it not even working. The heatsink would probably need large modding. All of it just doesn't seem worth the risk for an older laptop.

You can get a gt60 1065 for less than $1500 in the states. Your money would be better spent doing that. Or maybe a good clevo system for even less!

    users upgrade alienware http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m15x/766985-970m-m15x.html
is very good ... my laptop is cold , is mod.

    IMG_20111214_170636.jpg
    7438&tipo=big&o=1.jpg
my HD 6990M consumes 100w, is much warmer than a gtx 970m, I'm sure works gtx 970m for mxm slot 3.0b is universal
when I was hd 5850m all say the same thing, the HD 6990M would not work, I was the first to tester and it worked, others tried to gtx 680m, hd 8970m and all the cards worked

bring a notebook to Brazil runs many risks, taxes here are absurd, easier to change parts of my laptop.

    Upgrade my laptop is $450 - $250 (hd 6990m)= $200

    $1500>>>>>>>>>>$200

    Hello guys

i have gtx 980m ...and updated nvidia drivers to the latest...also, i updated the bios, EC and Vbios from here (MSI Global - Computer, Laptop, Notebook, Desktop, Motherboard, Graphics and more 64)...

but i have lag spike when i run DPC latency checker....

Edit 1: Today i can see my GPU in Nvflash but i couldn't update the vbios ... when i restart my laptop it says you cannot open this file in DOS! any help?
Edit 2 : I updated my vbios you don't need to restart your laptop to flash the Vbios just use Command Prompt and after it finish restart your laptop and now im testing DPC latency Checker.
Edit 3: updating Vbios that is in the first page seems fixed the DPC latency checker problem.:)

I'm Sorry guys that fix didn't fix the problem but make it less and rare ... Also, there is no lag while playing :)

Updated vbios.. Look the power limit is enabled.. Can someone help me if how high the power limit should be set to? or just slide the core clock and mem clock?

I would push the core up at maybe 15-25mhz increments and see how it goes before I even touched power limits.

Also what vBios is this? I have an unlocked one for awhile but haven't bothered flashin it just yet. I got it from another guy over at TI Forums.

    Care to share yours?

Awesome thanks!! Haven't been over there in a few days. I downloaded and flashed the unlocked vBios without issues.

I'll play with this tomorrow. :)

Yes a higher quad would help for sure.

I got ahead of you.. Yes, updating the vbios is flawless btw... Have you tried to install and reinstall the Nvidia drivers? it seems that the mod vbios is a generic one.. I tried to uninstall and reinstalling the drivers but it needs a modded .inf drivers.. Check yours too if it doesn't need a modded inf file then good.
    -------

it seems that I've hit the limit for my 970m

    175 = Core clock
    600 = Mem clock

I wont touch the Power limit yet (default settings) unless you guys know the safe limits to move the slider for this one.

This is strange when playing dirt3 (although this game is a bit old) with same core and mem speeds.. The stock vbios (clevo)..fraps reaches 100 fps and up. With vmodded bios fraps reaches 40-50 fps only.. I don't know what's unlock with the modded vbios...

I have a weird problem. I recently purchased 64GB pendrive, today I tried to flash my vbios and on boot there's error message "Error loading operating system". I used unetbootin and boot from USB under Legacy mode. I noticed there are only 2 system files available for my pen: exFAT and NTFS, no FAT32, does it mean BIOS can't recognize my pendrive and I have to use another one?
