I believe MSI had these rigged so the 680m is unavailable on battery power.

Actually, sometimes the simplest answer really could be the answer. Does anyone here happen to own a current model Alienware 17x or 18x AND an MSI GT70/1762? Can you test the power plugs with the MSI? If it works, that would provide a ready solution to anyone looking to upgrade to a more powerful power brick.

A question from a potential buyer, do the gold plated audio jacks really provide noticeable better sound than normal jacks? Or are they just a marketing gimmick?

hey guys...It's been awhile from my last post...
I just saw new nvidia driver came out for 680m...as striker mention too...
My question is should I uninstall old one first and then install new driver? or just download new driver install over old one? which method can get best result for our notebook?

PS...question for new 0NE owners...have you got the freebie yet?

The answer is, it's part marketing (for those that don't need it), and part reality (for those that do need it). Speaking about audio equipment in general and not specifically about the MSI, the answer is, it kind of depends on how much of an audiophile you are and what you're using it with.

If you "like good sound" but know little about it, and plug in a $50 pair of headphones, generally the answer is, no, it will not provide noticeably better sound TO YOU. (except maybe through the placebo effect).

But if you plug in a really high end set of speakers or headphones, or other variations of quality equipment, AND your ear is tuned to hear the finer things in life, then YES, it can make a difference in specific cases.

So how high end is high end? how tuned do your ears need to be? Sorry, I'm afraid my knowledge of the subject comes to an end before I can answer that one. I appreciate higher quality audio than many.... but I'm not quite enough of an audiophile to be able to quantify it for you.

I can tell you I use a pair of small Bose speakers (overrated BTW) on my computer and notice the difference between those and regular speakers. I've got an MSI whitebook in the mail with the plastic jacks, and will be using it with $100 headphones, and I'm not worried about the quality. BUT IF I was planning on hooking it up to the really nice high amplified surround sound system in my living room (that I don't have) and then crank the volume up really high... then I might be wishing for the gold plated.... MIGHT. I guess I'll find out in 9 days if that was in error.

My opinion and reading on the subject says; positive conductivity, resistant to corrosion in moist environmments, and probably more gimmick than not. I wouldn't count on any real noticable sound difference based on gold-plating alone. ;)

    :)

With NVIDIA's new installer package, there is no longer a need to uninstall the old drivers. It will do this for you, and install the new driver quite nicely.

    :)

I havent dug into the inside of my laptop yet.. but it was explained to me by a salesperson that this unit has 2 64gig mSATAs in SuperRaid

.. yeap.. just went in and looked and only 1. Oh well, now I just need to find a 128g mSATA and I am set. Dunno what that salesman was explaining to me.

Most likely the salesman simply got it wrong. There is a model with 2x64, so he probably read "128gb" and "mSATA" and just assumed it was 2x64 super raid.

No worries..... it all gets confusing with so many models..... so many configurations. At least you know what you have, and the big thing is that mSATA SuperRAID adapter. For the moment, MSI has restricted these to branded models only, and I do not think these will be easily obtained for some time to come. Again on a positive note, since you have that mSATA adapter, you can upgrade to SuperRAID in any mSATA SSD capacity you desire.

Any of our fine custom resellers here can assist you with this.

Yeah, 128GB SuperRAID models are available, but I believe MSI restricted distribution of these models to Asia, Canada, and Europe.

    :)

EDIT: Upon further consideration to your problem, I realized finding another 128GB MemoRight MS-701 mSATA SSD may be difficult. As such, which mSATA SSD would be a perfect marriage for your existing SSD?

If you cannot find the same 128GB MemoRight MS-701, probably the best alternative would be the new 128GB ADATA XPG SX300. I believe this mSATA SSD will pair perfectly with the MemoRight SSD, and technically speaking, the same drive..... essentially same specs, same performance levels, and same LSi Sandforce 2281 controller. Here is an article that should set your mind at ease in this choice:

ADATA XPG SX300 128GB mSATA Solid State Drive Review

Also, NewEgg currently has these in stock for $134.99 each:

ADATA XPG SX300 ASX300S3-128GM-C mSATA 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Not a bad price to upgrade to SuperRAID performance, and best yet, 2 x 128GB in RAID0 will double your primary capacity to 256GB. ;)

    :)

Thanks for the info, I have it bookmarked and I will probably pick this up soon.

Do I need to reformat or do anything like that? or just plug it into the SuperRaid card and I am set?

Yeah, you will need to flash your bios to the RAID version, install your new mSATA SSD, create your RAID volume, and a fresh install of the OS.

Between now and then, read up on these topics (setting up RAID0, fresh OS installation, etc.). You can find tutorials right here in the forums, but if you run into any problems, folks here will be happy to assist. Just let us know when you are ready to go.

I have quite a bit of backlight bleed on my panel. To avoid returning or replacing, is there any way to lessen the light bleed by adjusting the panel?

Most bleed is on the top and bottom, far more than my previous units. I'm hoping my seller or perhaps myself can remove the front bezel and loosen, tighten or adjust something.

Oh and HERE is a quick disassembly video I found for the GT70 but it doesn't show how to remove the front bezel, just how to unattach the monitor itself.

Yeah, I know..... but you understood what they were saying, right?

MSI HQ is based out of Taiwan, and many times I will see spelling or grammatical errors in their promotional content. I guess there is something to be said of things getting lost in translation. Makes you wonder if they have an 'english' proof-reader on staff, doesn't it? LOL!

Their other blurbs at the bottom of the screen were bad English, but they at least made some sense. Like the other ones made sense in English, you understood what they were sayings, but the tense of the word was incorrect or something. But the aforementioned quote just makes zero sense in English lol

And it's even weirder that it's their official channel. I'm shocked a multi-million dollar company can't find an editor for their official YouTube channel who speaks and understands English.

When using Raid on SSDs the Intel RST version and the Raid Utility OROM versions should be from the same group.

Series 11 versions of the Intel RST and Raid OROM support Trim on series 7 chipsets.Series 6 is a maybe.

If your RST is an 11.2 version then the best Raid Utility OROM is an 11.2 version.

The newest RST is 11.6.0.1030 so the best OROM is 11.6.0.1702

If you are not able to mod the bios yourself with the newest 11.6.0.1702 OROM then paying someone like Svet, maker of the VBios Mod Tool to make you an unlocked bios with the 11.6.0.1702 OROM.

You could always wait for MSI to release a new bios with the OROM.

    OROM 11.6.1702:

Just a random question: I was looking at some of the new models with Windows 8 and I was wondering if it's the regular Windows 8 or the Pro edition. And if it's the regular edition, does anyone know how much it would cost to upgrade a regular edition Windows 8 to the Pro version?

95% certain they ship with Windows 8 (regular).

Upgrade costs depends on how you go about it.

If you buy a computer with Windows 8, and you want to buy a Pro UPGRADE license separate, it will set you back $69.99
FAQ: The ins and out of Windows 8 pricing - Page 2 of 3 - Computerworld

If you buy a computer from a system builder like gentech and want to skip the upgrade BS and go straight to standalone licensed copy of Windows 8 Pro, then it will set you back $134

OR, In my opinion, it seems that your BEST option is to buy a new computer before January 31st with Windows 7 on it. then the upgrade to Windows 8 Pro is only $15. Read the full 3 page article at the link above for all the nitty gritty details.

Oh, ok, thanks. I wasn't sure about the upgrade pack thing. I thought the $70 was for upgrading Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro, I didn't realize it also applied to computers with Windows 8 regular on it.

It really does seem silly how it would make more sense to buy a computer with Windows 7 on it. Like a lot more sense. $15 compared to $70 is MASSIVE.

The problem is when you have pre-configured models like what MSI and Asus sell, you don't really get much of a choice. You get what the system gives to you, which means putting Windows 7 on it for the $15 upgrade doesn't make any sense since it'll cost over $100 to put Windows 7 on it.

The way Microsoft is handling this is kinda silly in my opinion.

Microsoft is giving MUCH steeper than normal discounts for early upgrades right now, compared to what they've done with past releases. Windows 8 is such a departure from previous generations, and is being eyed with enough skepticism from some that I think Microsoft is trying to get as many switched over EARLY and quick so as to start building a critical mass of users and adopters. Just my own personal observations.

If I were buying a GT70 right now, I would definitely get it ASAP with 7 and snag the cheap upgrade... and can always downgrade later. (but in my case I got a whitebook and already have 7Ent to put on it)

I know I'm one of the skeptics... Windows 7 is still working A-OK for me, thank you very much. I really don't need a CPU cycle eating new UI or smartphone styled app store... But that's just me... and I was one of those that hung onto XP all the way through vista and into the first year of 7, so you can just call me grumpy and old fashioned and ignore anything I say :p

Yeah the GT70 I just got has 2 offers that I have to figure out how to use, I think its all based of off registering the product. But I should be getting Win8 for free and then a backpack, steelseries headset and mouse. Going to have to print out that form, fill it out and fax it today when I have time to get the ball rolling. But, anyone know if I get Win8 Pro this way? or do I still need to upgrade for $15

Awesome, GREAT NEWS KEN! You and I have only been trying get them to do something about this, since..... Oh, I don't know...... since like, DAY ONE! Nice Vantage score too, but I still don't understand why they continue to test with PPU enabled. I'll just ignore the score of '33907'......

    FINALLY!

Sooooo, should I now stop posting about the 'throttling' issue, or should I continue until we see the EC firmware update? Any word on when we can expect this update?

(I'm dancing inside, but my body is not moving until I see this..... do'in my inside happy dance.)

Yeah it was since day one. :)

I tested the beta EC firmware myself earlier and confirmed no more throttling and it was with a 150W adapter, it never shut off.

Here is the result with GT70 0NE GTX680M both stock vBIOS and modded vBIOS:

Ahhhhhhh, very NICE Ken! And it is especially nice to see MSI is seeing to customer needs (unlike other manufacturers..... *cough*, *cough*.....ASUS!..... *cough*, *cough*). Eh-hummm! Excuse me, had to clear my throat.

Beta EC Firmware? And, just why is it, that I don't have a copy of this? :D (just kidding.... I can wait for the final release!)

I think the new EC firmware allows for a nice moderate boost, and best of all, NO THROTTLING! I see the temps ramped-up quite a bit with the modded vbios, so I'll probably stick with the stock vbios. Could you please run two more Vantage test..... one, all stock, no Turbo (TDE), no AfterBurner..... then a second, stock with Turbo (TDE) only? I would like to know if the EC firmware update restores the Turbo (TDE) function, as intended. It should!

    Thanks Ken!

    :)

I'm not much for overclocking when there is effort involved, but I can definately see the joy of having the ease of using the turbo button as it was intended should I ever feel the need for speed, so it would be great if this works!

Here is the benchmark with TDE on and off. EC firmware has nothing to do with vBIOS and according to Warner it was compiled by nVidia not MSI so not much they can do, but Svet sent me quite a few modded vBIOS I can test it later:

    Thanks again Ken!

Hmmmm, so the Turbo (TDE) function still isn't doing much of anything. Looks like MSI still has a little more work to do here.

    :)

EDIT : I've played 30 mins BF3 in ultra settings and turbo mode enabled. No throttling here :D Better than before !

    Hi all,
I just purchased the GT70 and was wondering where I could download updates from, I went to the MSI website but there is no driver section. Thanks in advance for your help.

Has anyone here ever own a NP9170 and the GT70? I was wondering if anyone can give me a feedback on which of these has a better build quality. And can any of these last for at least 4 years? Can't decide which one to buy.

Is this the chasis that has an msata slot ?
If not can it be equipped with the raid msata modul ?

I heard that this msata raid modul can deliver for each msata speeds of sata 6 gbps.
If this raid modul is connected through a sata interface how is that possible ?

Does it have bluetooth 4.0 integrated on the motherboard, or do i need to get bluetooth through a minipciexpress wireless card ?

    No
    Probably, depend of the vendor.

There is two msata 6 gbps on the msata SuperRAID module connected through a SATA 6gbps interface. So you won't have 12 gbps ;)

Bluetooth 4.0 is provided by the Intel Wifi 2230 or Killer Wifi card.

You new folks coming to the thread really need to do your own due diligence, PRIOR to questioning! Constant repeat questions, only inconveniences other members/owners with repeat answers, and the answers are already here! To avoid this, all that is required is a little light reading (and/or Google) on your parts, beforehand!

No# 1 post of the thread, HERE..... 'Downloads' and 'Where To Buy' sections.

For complete info on the MSI GT70 0NE, please go to the lead (No# 1) post of the thread..... HERE! There you will find information on mSATA SuperRAID, and in the 'How To' section, a link for a pictoral view of what this looks like in detail. Also, no, Bluetooth 4.0 is not integrated with the motherboard, but is with the Intel 2230 or BigFoot Killer Wireless-N 1202 wifi cards...... so no need to worry about a separate express card or bluetooh dongle.

    :)
