    Hi guys,

I've just received my laptop from the repairing centre. It's almost completely fixed unless one new issue I've just detected.

When it runs a game or something with the nvidia 860m card it makes a noise ((similar to the sound of a faulty HDD)). I'm sure that is something about the VGA because if I run any bench or game with Intel VGA it doesn't make any noise at all.

    What could it be?

    Hi tiner

What was the reason you sent your laptop back? I think your fan is making the noise when heat goes up, it makes that noise.

I sent it because of my laptop's crappy assembly of the screen.

Besides, without any hope of success I begged them to solve overheating problems. They've changed the sinks with no temp difference at all.

Buuut, if it were some kind of fan issue it would appear in any time it goes up but it doesn't. After some test I can say...

It only makes noise with NVIDIA
It only makes noise when there is noticeable GPU load.
It only makes noise when it is on the cooler notepal (a bit of slope)

Most of GE60 2PE don't come with any mSATA SSD, but if the SKU you are looking at comes with one, then it can be either Sandisk, or ADATA, or Kingston.

Yes my SKU contains 128gb mSATA and blu drive.
I hope its a good drive in comparison to Crucial M550.

Well my laptop also has problems in the screen. Flickering. I am still waiting for them to open the RMA process for 4 days and no reply... Hope that after going to the RMA does not come with a new issue...

    Better cooling in the y50.

Better screen and more upgradable the GE60.

Ge60 apache has a TN display with 850m, apache pro has the really nice samsung pls display (essentially an ips or ips-like display) with 860m graphics. So if you can, bump up to the apache pro.

As for apache vs the y70, I guess it would come down to whether you want 15.6 with slower 850m graphics or 17.3 with faster 860m graphics. I've heard that the y70 display is nicer than the y50 but I would investigate closer on the lenovo forums if I were you.

Edit: I thought the the 5070 meant y70, not y50. If you're thinking y50, it has all kinds of display issues. The 1080p panels are bad, and the 2160p panels have 48hz frame lick issues (possibly solvable with a bios update). Once I saw the display reviews with the y50 I went with the apache pro.

    Hi to everyone,

I just bought it, and I must say that it is too much noisy, my cpu temp now is 49-50ºC doing anything, just browsing.

Someone got this temperature "colder"? must I buy a cooling pad? or I must do some holes at back to get more wind?

    thanks.

You must think about your ambient temp.

If your room is warm it's absolutely normal having those temps, even in efficient laptops, in terms of cooling. The main issue is the lack of a good cooling system under FULL load, in those situations you'll figure out how hot becomes that laptop due to it's cooling system.

There is some software for controlling the fan speed so you can make the laptop really quiet.

OK, question, everyone references the GE60 Apache as having the 850M and the Apache Pro as having the 860M but looking at ibuypower (wife was shopping for a photo editing laptop and I suggested that gaming laptops tend to have specs in line with what she needs) they list the GE60 Apache as having the 860M. Obviously, screen quality is a concern although she uses an external monitor for bigger editing jobs she does do the smaller ones strictly on the laptop. (She currently has a 3yr old Dell with an i5-2410m and dedicated graphics but I forget what exactly).

So does the non-pro come with the 860m now or is it likely to be the pro? I ask because she placed the order while I was gone last night and before I had a chance to do any research on the system (I'd heard of MSI but had not really looked into their laptops). She went with the HDD (no SSD but it looks like those can be added later), 8gb (figuring that if she needed more I could take care of that later as well), BR drive (reader not writer, she occasionally watches a movie on the laptop). i7-4810MQ.

Seems like a solid rig but I have concerns about the screen (which it will have) and from the sounds of it I will need to figure out how to calibrate it either way. The Samsung panel seems to be much better than the alternative TN panel...

She was hesitant to spend as much as she did but I figured if she was going to upgrade, an i5-4200 was not the way to go as it really isnt much of an upgrade. (I just wish she had waited to pull the trigger until after I had a chance to do a little more research).

All of the GE60 laptops we carry are the "GE60 2PE Apache Pro" with the 860M video card. Hope this clears up any confusion. :)

I am hoping this means with the Samsung panel as well.

On a different topic, it seems there is a lot of discussion about heat with this laptop and after reading a few things about MSI Nos, I am wondering if it can be disabled. I know everyone wants faster faster faster but in this case, the system should already be a huge upgrade from what my wife is using now so if it is disabled before she touches the system, she won't even miss it.

    To disable MSI NOS/Turbo.
    1. Remove battery (easiest).
    2. Reduce quality settings in the game to reduce the need to use the battery.

I guess I will have to see how it goes, no way to reduce cpu load when processing photos which is primarily what it will be used for (she doesnt even play facebook games).

    Thanks for the help.

For your information, the boost is primarily designed for the GPU, but not CPU.

Ok so I made this account purely just to ask this. I have had my ge60 since June. Has anyone else ran into the issue where pressing the 's' or 'a' button turns on or off their microphone? I saw it somewhere else on a msi forum but no one really talked about it. Its really freaking annoying. It occurs when I have a mic plugged in and also when I use the built in mic.

It shouldn't, have you updated the BIOS and EC to verify? Also Realtek HD Audio driver.
If problem persists, then contact MSI directly for warranty service.

Hi! my MSI´s cpu temperature reaches 100º playing while GTA IV, with the turbo button enabled. The GPU is fine, below 80º.

Could be a bad fitted fan or thermal paste?. It has just two months, but it happens since first day. I think i´ll open it, apply artic cooling thermal compound and buy a cooling fan base.

    P.S. i5 4200H, GTX850m.

P.S.2. That I5 is solded to the motherboard, isnt it?. So i cannot upgrade it in the near.-future... (i7-4702HQ reaches 7700 points! in cpu benchmark, 2x better than my i5).

The cpu is not soldered. Clean the heatsink and re paste, that helps in most cases.

By the way, the Turbo button isn't designed as GPU overclocking, see below FAQ.
What does the "Turbo" button do on my GE60/GE70 laptop?

Thank you for the quick reply. I am just a new mech.eng student and i dont think i would require the workstation GPU's for now to do what I am doing as i reckon things i do in solidworks will not be really complicated. so im wondering if it will run smooth and well for simple things.
Edited: Is it better with the 850 or 860 GPU? or is doesnt matter ?

You can open it up and do what you like to a reasonable extent.
Read warranty info from MSI here.

Heat is mediocre and acceptable. Some may find it warmer than usual which is normal since it's a gaming notebook.
Battery time is about 2 to 3 hours.

Why i m asking about heat and any other issues because i m in Pakistan.
my friend is coming to PK from USA.so he will buy from there .
so there is no MSI support in PK. i dont want any problems ,once i got this laptop i dont think i can return it back any soon if it did not work for me or got any serious issues.
i m currently stuck between ASUS ROG GL551JM-DH71 and msi ge70 apache pro 061.
    any recommendation from above laptops.
i read ASUS ROG GL551JM-DH71 have bad screen?

    Hello,
I own the: MSI Gaming Series GE60 2PE-012NL Apache Pro
    This is the 4700HQ, 2x 128gb SSD, 16GB RAM and 860M version.
So my laptop runs about 65degrees with just browsing the website and writing this text.
I've read a couple of pages on this forum and read this is kind of normal, but my laptop is making a lot of noise at the moment and i was wondering if anyone has already changed the thermal paste of this laptop?
Also will i break my warranty since there is a sticker on the back, but i seem not to break it when i open it.
(i bought mine about 2weeks ago)

What kind of noise did you get? If it's caused by the cooling fan then then fan housing might to be tight causing the fan to rub against the housing.
You can try to loose the screws on the housing just a little bit to see if it eases the symptom.
Warranty sticker is not enforced by MSI, you can just remove it completely. You can change stuff out, or repaste as long as you don't damage anything internally.

First of all tell us what are you going to do with the laptop...
In my opinion, price of GE series dropped for about 100-200€ so now it is a really good choice if you are planning to sometime game on it, not for many hours like 3+ ... it will overheat and then throttle but that's something what cooling pad and repaste can easily fix :)

    imma use my laptop for
    1. some school work (which means that it needs around 4hrs+ of battery life on "working" mode
    2. gaming (imma play games like crysis 3, watch dogs, ACUnity, etc @high or ultra settings)
    3. some video editing and source film making

    1. Do not expect 4+ with GE series ... Max 3-3.5hours...
    2. Ultra settings on Crysis with 860M? Nope, thats impossible... High maybe yes but i am not sure ...
    3. 860M nad i7-4710HQ is enough for that if you want quick rendering
