Just got my Apache Pro a few days ago and I'm already running into issues. The USB ports will function about 75% of the time, I have to reboot the machine to see if they will next function on startup, and if there are USB devices plugged in forget it, Windows won't shut down on its own. What's weird is I think this occurred right after I installed the Elantech touchpad driver but I fail to see how that could influence the USB ports... Anyone else encounter this issue?

Yes, maybe it's your bad luck. I have none of your problem :D
Just curiosity, but why don't you pick a ROG? 750JM or 750JW is good enough.

You're using Windows 8 OEM or what OS?

Is that a legal copy of W7 (pirated software may come with problems)? And did you try installing other OS?
IMO, you should use W (7/8) pro or higher edition (I had bad experiences with Home edition). Avoid 8.1 since it still has bugs.

Is it possible to attach an extra fan in the optical bay as it is in the Lenovo Y510p?

8 and 8.1 both have run into problems. 8.1 was released in part to address the problems that 8 faced. The edition will not solve said problems either.

Can you reinstall the chipset driver and remove the Elantech driver?

Hello, got 3 questions on Apache Pro:
    1) Does palm rest get warm/hot during light use (i.e. browsing, Excel, Word, DVD) ?

    2) Does palm rest get warm/hot during gaming ?

    3) Does it use combo 2-in-1 port for mic and headphone out, or conventional 2 ports ?

    Thanks.

Hello guys, I'm planning to buy one of this either the ge60 or ge70, but I am worrying about the cooling capabilities of this laptop, is it really that hot?

I read that the gpu and cpu temps reaching 80c - 90c. With a casual gamer in mind, can someone stress test their machine with heavy gaming for like an hour with adaptive vsync on. Disabling vsync is just for benchmarking for me, so I just need to know what are the temps like with vsync or adaptive vsync on. Thank you

what's your room (enviroment) temp? if it's <27 C then nothing to worry. Just use a normal fan for you and your laptop, that's enough.
otherwise, do not playing (hardcore) game if you do not have a good external cooling system =))

Hi guys, I hope someone can help me. I bought the Apache pro with 4 GB RAM. I want to upgrade to 8 GB. Which one shouldI buy. Don't know which one is the right one.

And another thing. Installed all drivers under Win 8.1 ... Sometimes the notebook makes a single beep while the PC is running. Each hour or sometimes less. Sounds like the BIOS. What do you think?

    I've also bought the 4GB version and the chip I had installed is a Hynix DDR3L 1600Mhz with 11 / 11 / 11/ 28 / 39 timings and 1.35 voltage.

I've added a Kingston ValuRam 8GB chip with the same parameters and it works like a charm for a total of 12 GB RAM

As long as the timing/voltage is the standard spec as the stock ones then you can mix them with lesser chance of compatibility issue.

How a man can (and it is high educating one, engineering) be so stupid to lead a most of heat under the playing keys on gaming laptop??? Right side of laptop is pretty cool.. They should just change a side....

Anyone solved how to stop a fan on idle?

I have now ge60pro Apache and I had in two weeks gs60pro Stealth and both have almost same battery behavior:

battery icon show that AC is plugged in whtn it is not (it shifts within a few minute, I see it on battery icon ant screen change a brightnees), than it show sometimes that battery missing but its powered on battery, and somteimes it shows battery 100% all the time until it shots down (on gs60 I couldn´t even calibrate it but on ge60 now I can)..

Is it possible that both (2 diferetn MSI from 2 differetnt countries) have same hardware defect, (some charging or battery controller) or is it something software related??

I installed my own windows on Appache with all drivers from MSI webside, could it be something with it, it worked good 2 days ok and thet it get creazy...

    Someone? Any ideas?

    a little review

    +
Amazing screen Samsung (on ge60 Apache pro with gtx860 , other versions may have some cheap Chi mei )
    good sound
    good keyboard
Graphics cards can handle crysis 3 and BF 4 at max settings with 20 -25 fps, read somewere that it can also overclock well, have not tried it myself
2 mSATA place and 1 sata inside, for HD ( realy quick with ssd )

    -
Battery problems, sometimes it appears that the battery does not exist even though it is running on battery power, shows that it is charging when AC is not connected , shows 100% when it is half enpty, can be contact issue , strangely , I had the same problem with gs60pro Stealth , it can still be msi hardware fault
It kicks in headphones when using external HD in the two USB sockets closest to the headphones ( so you can hear the hd work , electrical interference ) , probably hardware failure, the usb on the other side do not interferes
Warm under hand when playing, warmest elements and fan sitting under left hand , which man using in gaming , right side is cool , totally idiotic placement on a gaming computer , they should just swapped sides , cpu reaches 93 and gpu 86 , with open the bottom cover several degrees less

Had it not been for the this annoying errors it would be a real 10 points score, now about 7

My first impressions after using this machine for <24 hours:

    +great keyboard
    +great audio
    +great screen
+great performance (only tested LoL and CS:GO, 100+ fps in both at very high settings)
+great price (paid 1050 for an openbox model)

~decent battery life, I haven't tried gaming but I got at least ~3 hours simply browsing the web on "balanced" power settings, not the best but it's what I expected for a "gaming" laptop
~heat, although I haven't tested exact temps it does feel a little hot to the touch while playing games for a couple consecutive hours. it's not TOO bad in my opinion and I expected some heat but again, I haven't tested temps to see if it's a real problem.

-poor touchpad, it's really noisy for some reason because i don't think it's fully sealed and moves around as you navigate, not a huge issue because of how often I will have an external mouse plugged in
-MICROPHONE, I haven't tried the fix that people in this thread have mentioned but out of the box the microphone is extremely poor and cuts out during use. Hopefully the realtek solution fixes my problems but I'm not sure if I'll have to remove the soundblaster software and thus renewing my audio experience (can anyone confirm if the fix requires me to remove the soundblaster software?)

8/10 for me so far! I'll post an updated review after another week or so of regular use.

Try the new Realtek drivers for the mic issues.

And for the touchpad rattle issues there is some fix but we need to open the laptop to adjust some kind of part which makes it noisy, it's simple and easy but it needs to be opened.

If you want more info there's a guy in YouTube who fixed it, search for the problem and you'll find it.

Does anyone managed to control our Apache's fan speed?

You may need to use Svet's tuning software to adjust the fan table in the EC firmware.

    some tip
If you hear interferences in headphones it is caused, you shouldn't believe it, by keyboard lights and SteelSeries software. Så some lights, most when changing colors and low brightness, make interferences. It takes time for me to uninstall all driver to come to this conclusion.

When gaming (I5 and gtx860 maxwell)(crysis 3 on max, yes it is playable) temps are 93 gpu, 85 cpu, when remove back cover (under laptop)(warranty label can removes gantly with box cutter and set back again, thats a one screw under it) then temps drops to 88, 80, and with laptop cooler with 2 little fan under it drops to 84, 75. No repasteng underwolting or other things...
so simple advice, like we did on old gx640, make a lot of holes on the cover, or make some cover by yourself e.g. of alu plate with many holes in, I byed one, sholud try to cut it in real cover shape. We must to do MSI´s jobb, eh...

On idle without fan ( I just remove cable, not to recommend to do it all the time) cpu gets 54 on simple tasks, office, web, and 57 when watching full hd video on youtube. So it is possible to have it silent on simple tasks. Mr. Sen7inel writes maybe some kind of software to us.....

No you can't turn off the fan without editing the fan profile but I would not recommend doing so. If you are editing it set it no lower than 25%.

I own a different MSI notebook, but developed a GE60 specific Fan Control Tools proflie for axel7 and figured anyone interested could benefit from it:

    1. Download RWEverything then install it.
    2. Download Fan Control Tools by Pherein, and unzip in the RWEverything installation folder.
    3. Download my GE60 Fan Control Tools profile, and again unzip in the RWEverything installation folder.
    4. Open "Fan profile applier" and set your notebook to GE60
    5. Select desired proflie and apply

    Enjoy :hi2:

You can try your hand at changing the profiles around, just make sure the editor is in 'simple view' mode.

EDIT: updated 'quiet' profile per suggestions, now it's quieter than ever!

playing candy crush on facebook? :) just joking

without extra laptop cooler and without repasting playing demanding games? how is it possible?

    guys, what temps you get?

Thanx Sen7inel one more time. You get a beer :)

guys it works well, the lowest fan speed is 38% (2250 rpm) (even 36%,2170 rpm works but maybe little unstable sometimes) and if you edit quiet profile to this value (under the step 1) you get almost silent laptop still with little cooling on, a cpu hold 40 degrees on simple tasks.

Wow. Isnt that too much? And you have the i5 version. I wonder what would happen to i7. And maxwell isnt supposed to generate that much heat. Does ge70 have better cooling than ge60? Being bigger it may have more room for air. Am i right?

i5 isn't so much weaker than i7, both have 47 tdp so heat is almost the same here, it is not cpu which make a heat problem, that's gpu producing heat when gaming, maybe I need to repaste I don't know. I had gs60 with gtx870 and get same temps (ambient temp is about 24).
GE has one fan but larger chasi, GS has 2 fan bat is tinner, so it is diferent, both reached 93 degrees but GS is stronger so make own conclusions. (but gs costs 1600 € and ge without windows 900 € ;)

I wonder how much the others get when gaming ( I tried crysis3 on max)??

Yea tdp is the same but still 2 cores vs 4 so it should still produce a bit less heat like 3-5 at least. At that temps do nvidia gpu-boost still work? Or does it go down as the temps raise?

870 heats more than a 860 so this proves that gs60 has better cooling.

What i wonder is the heat comparison vs ge70 and ge50.
And how do ppl feel that heat? Does it make you unconfortable?
Or how i5 vs i7 effects the heat?

Playing BF3 multiplayer with the U3 notepal cooler and the cpu core clocked down to 2.5 GHz.

Almost 99% GPU load with high-ultta and 1080p settings.

    67° max in CPU.

I don´t see perfomanse drop so I think gpu works ok all the time. The heat is unconfortable when playin because MSI´s most educating IDIOTS put a fan and warm components on the left side so ASDW and all under palm is warm, some area like between space and pad really hot, you need extern keys maybe just a numpad or something and play on this. Att the same time the right side is cool, yes, just that one we don´t use when playing. They should just sweep the side but a man need iq over 20 to realize that.
And all that from company who makes almost just a gaming laptops.. hahahah
If it wasn´t for fantastic Samsung screen I should newer buy it.

I wasnt expecting this model to run that hot and putting the hottest components to the right is a bit idiotic but its probably because of the dvd burner. It takes the area and everyone got used to having it on the right.

Do we not have an internal shot of a ge60/70?

Are temps the same on ge 60 and 70?

Is it possible to set this values on boot?

Its amazing, i don't even notice the fan noise and it is running almost in the same temperatures.

which one do you have? is it warm under a palm?
maybe your cooling pad suck out air, downwards, and my pushing upwards.. can it be a reason?

what temps you get without cooling pad?

and how hot you get under palm and fingers with cooling pad? uncomfortable?

a few people using dvd today.. on my old msi gx640 it was on the left side.... its just, morons who don´t think and don´t test own products.. If they tryed to play just a 10 minutes on it they should understand this heat problem..

This is possible... though this would require developing a custom embedded controller firmware. I did just this for my GS60. Without the settings in firmware, every time you shut down or unplug/replug the fan settings need to be reapplied. I suggest having the computer 'sleep' instead of shutting down to retain the settings.

But in the meanwhile I updated my original post with a new version of the profile, give it a go

If high temperatures scare you I strongly advise some research on y510p ultrabay gpu temperatures before pulling the trigger.

I know i know but they say it doesnt feel much. What i dislike most is the micro stutter. Is it that bad? I dont really care about the temps as long as it doesnt burn my hand. But i was expecting better temps on ge series.

Guys, can anyone explain me how to underclock GPU voltage? I did it with CPU to prevent throttling and it worked.

Ok i found what i was looking for a heat comparison of ge60 and 70. As expected ge70 heats less on cpu and much less on gpu. You can see it on the gentech's ge70 apache review

I think it's more expedient to get the GE70 with i5 to prevent throttling as much as it possible. BTW for games i5 is very similar with i7, but gives less heat.
Today i thought about changing my GE60 to GS60, but kepler 860 is too much slower for it's price. Maybe it's really better to change to GE70 with i5.

But in any case do not take GE60, it has really bad cooling system and you'll never get your 3.3ghz CPU and 1092 GPU in heavy applications.

I have never had throttling in my GE60 Apache Pro, neither in CPU nor in GPU, since I bought it 2 months ago.

A lot of BF4 long online games and AC4 fully completed.

Yea i have thought of that too but they are in the same tdp limit and it matters on games like bf4 can anyone with i5 post their system's after gaming?

Does your gpu perform at max turbo boost? (Stock clock + %15 of stock clock) Do you feel the heat on the keyboard? I dont want my fingers to burn :p

Not at all, it feels warm but it doesn't burn at all.

And yes, it runs at full speed, I even sometimes play with the GPU slightly overclocked (when I overclock GPU I turn off CPU's turboboost) and I'm still in the mid 80's.

Mid 80's?? Review on youtube gentechpc's onboxing showed the cpu in mid 90's and that was just after one benchmark.
