tassadar, Do you get the exact same error message as me when you reboot? And how long could you play Crysis before it happened to you? I had it ranging between crashing after 2mins to it crashing after around 45.

    Chaotic, i used several mods.
The graphics mods I used were -

    Qarl's Texture Pack 3 Redimized
    BETTER NIGHTSKY v1.2
    Bomret's Texture Pack: Shivering Isles
    Natural Faces.

Those were the bigger mods I was using.

Found an easy way to force the BSOD with the Crysis demo, run through the first bit until you see a hostile enemy and save, then load it from there and leave it idle make sure your comp is set to not auto sleep. You will load continue to die, repeatedly and within 10min-30min youll have the BSOD. Im thinking of using this method and checking diff drivers.

Yup, that's the same error I had. This makes it 5 people we know have this exact problem on select few games. 0 people have confirmed that they can play Crysis, 1 person said they have played Oblivion 'for a couple of hours at a time' without it crashing (the game I had the most crashes on).

Please report back if you experience any changes after trying different drivers.

Another game which has the error is The Last Remnant. It also has a demo if you wanted to try to replicate the error on that too (It was the same error but happened much more frequently for me on that than with Crysis). Also I do need to stress that the error only seems to happen while your actually 'playing' the game. leaving the game idle on screen won't cause the BSOD.

MSI should recieve my Laptop on Tuesday so i will be sure to let you and everyone else know on here whether they are able to fix it. I also caused the crash just before packing it away, so when they turn on my laptop it should show the error message straight away, hopefully that will help them diagnose the problem, and fix it, if they can.

Ok I figured you used Qarl's Texture Pack 3 Redimized. I am testing Oblivion now, I just had to config it to work with my pc controller. I've play for 15 minutes and no crashes yet. Once I get a couple of hours going I will let you know if I get a crash.

Looking forward to hearing your results.

Remember, I had the crashing happen more often when talking to people (when the camera sort of zooms in to talk and off when you finish) and when killing monsters.

I had all the graphics up to max, HDR lighting, AA off, Highest Resolution.

I started my game by going to the Fighters Guild and starting those quests... I managed to get to the third quest "The Desolate Mine" (the one where you have to kill all the goblins in "Desolate Mine") but I could never complete the quest because the crashing would happen almost straight away while killing the golblins in there.

Anyway, I REALLY hope your able to play it OK.

I tested two more games. Race Driver: GRID and Mirror`s Edge. Both played at 1366x768, with 4x Anti-aliasing and all ingame settings to the highest value for about an hour each. Didnt got the error with those games and they played flawless on the laptop

Sorta good news, unstailled 9.6 drivers and used the default drivers that came with Windows 7. The driver version is 8.56.1.13 I've played for 1.5 hours with no crash. BUT i also put a fan near my computer and took the comp off my lap and put it on a table. Not sure right now if it was a overheating issue or a driver issue. Note to self, always change ONE variable at a time lol.

    Damn... Grid crashes too. The list is getting longer my friends ^^; ;;

Tassadar, it's great you could play for 1.5 hours, no crash! I had the crashing happen more frequently when I had the laptop on my lap... that's when I thought it was an overheating issue, then i tried it on a table in a much cooler environment and I would still have crashes (although not AS frequently) even when the graphics card never went hotter than 75C and the CPU never above around 45C i think it was.

Maybe you could try it again, just without the fan this time. I probable will stick with Vista, but if the Windows 7 drivers work for you... then maybe there's a driver, modified or not, which would work for us Vista users.

I've been playing without the fan on my lap for about 30 min now with no crash. I think the driver may have fixed the issue. Ill keep you guys posted.

Any of you 64bit OS users that found drivers for the trackpad? I need them beause although the trackpad works there is no function in the control panel to disable the tapping of the touchpad because it recognizes it as a regular mouse?

Yes I found some. Its synaptics touchpad, look for those drivers on synaptics website. Or you can use the drivers from XPS Studio 16' was has a synpatics touchpad also. The Dell drivers is what I am use and they are better than the ones from the Synaptics website IMO.

BSOD is a driver issue im almost certain. With these observations I came to the conclusion:
    Installed 9.6 Drivers
Received BSOD with 9.6 drivers while playing Crysis for on average every 20 minutes while on my lap

Received BSOD with 9.6 drivers while playing Crysis for on average every 40-80 minutes while on desk

Uninstalled 9.6 drivers to Windows 7 default (see previous post for version)
Never received BSOD while playing Crysis for 90 minutes with a fan blowing on my computer while on a desk

Never received BSOD while playing Crysis for 60 minutes on my lap

    Reinstalled 9.6 drivers
Received BSOD with 9.6 drivers while playing Crysis within 30 minutes while on desk with fan blowing on it

    Uninstalled 9.6 drivers
    Havn't received a BSOD yet =)

I've just noticed on the drivers page for the Laptop that MSI JUST released a new VGA driver! dated '2009-06-25'

The driver version is 'Vista32: 8.572.0.0'

Now i'm almost positive that's the same version number as the one I was using... So I don't know if it really has been updated, but would someone else who experiences the BSOD problem try them out please? See if it helps anything?

    http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=driver&maincat_no=135&prod_no=1678

Also, tassadar898, You never mentioned the driver version you were using with Catalyst 9.6? And what Catalyst version are you using now that you rolled back the drivers to the default ones?

They are not new drivers, they just updated to ones they provided on the driver disk. The website had older drivers before. Also I do get any crashes in Oblivion, it plays without issue.

Great news 1chaoticadult, glad you could run it fine. I know your on Vista 64-bit, but what drivers/Catalyst version are you on?

Well I thought that the Catalyst was just software from ATI that lets you change settings for your graphics card, which you use along side the drivers for the card itself?

Although I could be wrong since I never used an ATI card before now, but that's how it worked with Nvidias 'Control Panel'

When you go to install Catalyst 9.6, click 'custom install' and it should scan your hardware and tell you what you need to install. On that page it will show a list of components to install, and what you already have installed.

So it will tell you if you need to update the drivers or not (I think it has a greyed out box if i you're already at the latest drivers).

Could you see if it tries to install new drivers (if so, what version are they?) or if it detects the ones you already have?

Because i'm wondering if it's a problem with certain versions of Catalyst now...

    Damn, that is bad news.

Are you able to find and use the windows 7 drivers that seemingly worked for tassadar898? Driver 8.56.1.13.

Also, are you on 32bit or 64?

I guess this almost confirms that it's a hardware issue? Seems only certain people get the errors, while some don't, on all different drivers and OS's.

    MSI should receive my laptop on Tuesday, I'll be reporting back on if they can fix it or not. And all our laptops are still under warranty so it's not all bad news I guess... unless they can't diagnose the problem and fix it! But lets hope that doesn't happen ^^;

I finally got GTA IV to work for longer than 5 minutes. Just make a txt file called commandline.txt in gta folder and add "-windowed -nomemrestrict" to it. Has been working fine for me.

I got the blue screen again but got at least an hour worth of gameplay before it froze. I dont know if it is a hardware problem or a problem with GTA IV, which is very buggy anyway.

tassadar898 indicated to me he has had no more problems since he used the 8.56 drivers. Maybe it is a hardware issue but not everyone has it. I been playing Oblivion with loads of mods without issue for the last couple of days for about 2-3 hours each day, no BSODs. Hopefully vaant MSI support fixes the issue so others can know what to do and so you will finally be able to play the games you want without fail.

    Hi guys,

Here are a list of games I've played for more than an hour without any hitches:

    Assassin's Creed
    Dark Sector
    Fifa 2009
    NFS Most Wanted
    Neverwinter Nights 2
    Prototype*
    RaceDriver Grid
    Titan Quest
    The Godfather 2
    The Witcher
    Pro Evolution Soccer 2009

*It BSOD on me once when I placed the ex625 on my lap after playing for more than 5 hours. I'm not sure if it's because of the heat or because the power pin was just halfway in the laptop (which i realised just before it blacked out on me).

Just to further note, I'm playing the games under the following conditions:

    Avg Room Temp: 28 Celsius
    OS: Vista 32 SP2
ATi Drivers: DNA Vista 32 version 8.612 BETA 3
    Cooler: None

    cheers,

    Soul-Acid

jman123, just tobe sure, you do get the same error message as me right? The one i posted on my first post a few pages back.

Also, do you have any other games to try? the only other games reported to have this error with a few people are:

    Oblivion
    X-Men Origins
    Crysis (full game and demo)
The Last Remnant (Full game and demo)
    NFS: Carbon
    GRID

vaant, I think that maybe my error message is a bit different, I think it says something that the driver´s stopped working. Also, it seems that you and the others are getting blue screens, while my screen just blacks out. I got some blue screens after I rebooted, but not while playing.

As for the problem, I first had it playing GTA IV, no patches, Vista 32 and the drivers which came installed. I tryed the 1.0.2.0 and 1.0.3.0 and now that I´m using W7 64 I tryed 1.0.4.0 and it´s the same. Just once using 1.0.3.0 I was able to play well with no crashes. Now I can´t even get to the first safehouse.

On Crysis, I didn´t played long enough using Vista, but on W7 I played at least for one hour before it first crashed. I changed the texture quality to medium and it didn´t crash until I changed it back to high. I think there are specific places in the game that causes more crashes than others, for example that lake in the beginning of the game.

On the other hand, I´ve played some games for many hours and had no crashes, like Mirror´s Edge, L4D, Killing Floor and Racedriver Grid(Grid not that much tho). Fallout 3, Far Cry 2, Warhammer40k, Oblivion, PES2009 and Assassins Creed I didn´t played long enough to know for sure.

I think and really hope to be just an driver issue. The Mobility 4670 is not used in any other notebook that I´m aware about, and it happens just for some games, so the card is not completely defective. We must get this to MSI and ATI attention so they can fix it(you helped a lot by sending your laptop).
If every ex625 is defective would be a pain =( Sending it back would be a pain, at least for me(as I live in Brazil but bought it the US).

Maybe it´s an overheating issue, as it usually crashes on the heaviest games. Also, back home I could play GTA IV for a while, but in London(where is hot like hell), it crashed really quick.

(GTA IV is not on your list)

Woops, GTA IV was supposed to be on the list. at least 3 people have confirmed it crashing with the error.

    And just to clear things up. I never actually got a BLUE screen. My laptop would freeze to a black screen and i'd have to turn it off by hitting the power button. Upon reboot, Vista would tell me I just had an error, and in the error report it called the 'event name' a blue screen. That's why i've been referring to it as a blue screen, even though I actually got a black screen? ^^;

And I think we've all worked out that it's definatly not an overheating issue, specially since we could play much more demanding games than some of the ones that would freeze, and we'd have no problems. Plus i would always record my temperatures and it never got too hot at all on the games that froze. It actually would get much hotter on games that didn't freeze (but that's only because I could actually play them for more than a few mins).

I also see that you didn't get any errors while playing Oblivion... It seems like I'm the only one who has experienced crashed with that game

In gta 4 I can play for about an hour running a fan straight into the back of the ex625, but it will eventually crash kind of randomly. Lowering the resolution seems to help in GTA 4. I have GRID and it works perfectly been playing online for more than an hour.

Is there a way to increase video memory by using ram kind of like what u can do with on board graphics?

GTA4 crashes after about an hour of play even while idling in the menu which is weird. I am thinking the crashes are due to driver/game conflict which cause the bluescreen error.

Note i had mp3s playing while playing GTA and COD4

I need to know what errors you are getting. You have not provided enough info.

What do you mean by default? The driver which came on the cd? Im using the 9.6 for W7 x64 on ati website. No crashes at all? Even on crysis and gta after many hours?

No the one that comes with Windows 7. 9.6 is known for having issues.

I cant get ATI catalyst to install on windows 7 or in XP. It just installs a manager but not the catalyst control center or drivers.

jman, you cant use the setup with the majority of drivers, you have to perform a manual INF install and then use DNA drivers to manually select install catalyst.

Beat me to it. Yep this is very true. I had the same problem and tried though device manager with finding the inf files, this works fine.

It depends. DNA drivers fix some issues for people but can break things for others. i would use whql drivers only unless you have specific issue then try DNA drivers.
