I had that happen to me, I just used throttlestop to fix it, works perfectly. Just shoot the throttlestop guy on these forums a message and he will hook you up with a download for the new version that supports haswell.

I'm disappointed with the QC as well. My hypothesis is that either the pasting machine or assembler is tuned for the thicker GE70, which causes more paste to be applied to the thinner GE60. I have no problem repasting the CPU/GPU. In fact, I'd rather do it myself so I know it was done right. The throttling is probably a haswell thing and not an MSI issue.

what?? CPU throttles to 800 mhz??? that 66% lower,

really, if that's the case I think I should reconsider another option

sadly I can't find other laptop with 4 usb,

usb is very important since I will use it for headset, external sound card and mouse

Blue, can I ask you how you set up RAID with your mSATA SSDs? I'm planning on doing the same thing as you (even the same SSDs lol)

You just change the bios mode to raid, then in the bios you can create your raid 0 volume. When you go to install you need to have the raid drivers on a usb or else windows wont be able to see the volume to install to.

Yes with the mSATA drives since the plug is electrically SATA they behave like any other SSD/HDD.

    1. I talked to MSI about the weight, the guy I got said he couldn't do anything but was very polite and seemed to commiserate with me. He said and I quote "If the place you bought it from won't let you return it, check with the consumer protection bureau of your state, I can't imagine they could get away with that"
    2. I called again about the heat and the person I got said that it shouldn't be getting that hot, he thought if it was getting that hot it would just shut down. Obviously it does not, it just throttles. Anyhow, he suggested returning for an exchange to the retailer I bought from because it wasn't supposed to be getting that hot.
    3. I got a reply back from Newegg, they're 'making an exception' for me and allowing me to return for 15% restocking fee and exclusively store credit. I guess I'm OK with that but it means I'll have to move from a gaming laptop to a desktop/laptop combo. I'm trying to bargain the restocking fee down.

Right now it looks like I'm going to return it. There is no one single issue that makes or breaks the comptuer for me, I think I could live with any one of them. However, with them all combined, it just isn't a great computer and doesn't meet my needs. It has bad battery life, flexy keyboard, shaky DVD drive, unacceptable temps and is heavier than advertised. I don't feel like I should have to downclock my extremely fast CPU to get the temps into an acceptable range. Like I said, if there were only one issue, I would be fine but the combination of them just makes this a far less than ideal machine.

I reached the same conclusion when I returned mine. Thankfully, I wasn't charged any restocking fees.

The laptop works flawlessly and none of its issues are deal breaking, but when all the issues are combined, I felt like it was a ticking time bomb waiting to explode down the road. I was very forgiving of the issues because I just got it and was willing to work them out, but given enough time, I was fairly sure I would be pulling my hair out from time to time due to mayhem of issues.

Edit: While I made no mention of it, my unit had a few keyboard issues as well. It had some flex and number 4 key was somewhat stuck.

Well I managed to fix my heat issue with a repaste, cooling pad and undervolt. Battery life is 4 hours for school related tasks which is fine for me. Keyboard flex is there for sure, but I dont really notice it that much. Even with the flex its one of the nicer laptop keyboards ive used, definitely better than my old vaio and I love the blue backlight. By bright dot has even disappeared for the most part (if it comes back but i just give the screen a tap and it goes away) so im pretty pleased. Im just annoyed with the Nvidia driver status right now.

So which one is better ? Plextor or this ?

    Hmm, why?
That kingston has R/W around 550MB/s
And Plextor has Read 540MB/s and Write only 340MB/s
So why do you think that the Plextor is better?

Speaking of msata drives... I recently bought a GE70 with a SSD as the main HD. Could I add a msata drive, too? And if so, could the SSD still be the primary boot drive?

    Thanks!

Can I install an mSATA drive into my GE70, and still keep the SDD drive as my primary boot drive?

Yes, it's just like adding a hard drive. Your computer will still boot from the current OS drive, and the added mSATA drive will be detected as additional storage.

Updated to Windows 8.1 preview. Now I cannot play LOL, or The Walking Dead on Steam. I tried updating to the latest 320.49 driver, but NVIDIA says it's not supported... =(

Since their are two msata slots, could I put in two drives as additional storage (without doing raid 0?) I can't access advanced bios settings, so I have no idea if this is possible.

Something interesting to note: HIDevolution offers a barebone model of the GE60 that I haven't seen anywhere else, with a few interesting changes in regards to the model. They call it the MH15GE.
MSI HID MH15GE-V2 15.6" Custom Built to Order Gaming Laptop

    1. They offer a free repaste on this model w/ IC Diamond, which is a clear sign that they and other custom shops are aware of the problem.
    2. The palmrest is plastic, not aluminum, so probably a lot better at not burning you.
    3. The lid is plain dull metallic paint rather than gloss with "eyes." Probably less of a fingerprint magnet.
    4. Very clean and simple appearance, with no glossy plastic bezels or strips.
    5. Still has backlit keyboard and 2 color power button, so retains the only useful cosmetic features.
    6. Comes with a 30 day "zero dead pixel" warranty on the screen, so even if you had just one bad pixel, you could have it replaced.

It's also cheap, starting at $925, so it wouldn't be unreasonable to just order it and one of those 9-cell batteries, giving you the same laptop without 95% of the issues.

Personally, I always want to install the OS myself, since as you can see earlier in this thread, pre-installed OS and drivers often don't work perfectly. Being a computer repairperson, I always have installs available. The price is about right without it though.

You can change what uses integrated and what uses the dedicated graphics in nvidia control panel. If its stuck on dedicated graphics when you arent running anything then you probably have some monitoring software that is keeping the dedicated graphics active, such as msi afterburner or hwmonitor.

I went ahead and ordered that model from HID, so in less than a week I can report on the different materials and if there is any difference in heat dissipation. Also going to order that 9-cell battery. I'm pretty handy with notebook tweaking, so I should be able to do a best case scenario report on the maximum in cooling, power saving and undervolting.

Another interesting difference with the HID version is that it looks to have a different WiFi chip.

Oh, also, it has an ESATA port I don't believe we've got.

Hey guys, I've been lurking on this thread for quite some time, a lot of good information! I've had my GE60 since Tuesday and I'm happy with it so far. Today, I moved my 750GB harddrive into the ODD. The Bios sees the drive fine but it doesn't show up in Windows 8. Are there any settings that need to be changed in the bios for windows to detect the drive?

Do you mean as far as checking if all parts are installed properly? I ordered it totally bare of HDDs, so the only thing they did was repaste the CPU and GPU. Even if they totally mucked it up, couldn't be worse than stock :p My plan is to open the box, throw away the included driver disk, then pretty much go through the same process of setup any reseller would (unless they are asshats that use the included driver disk).

    I suppose I probably should.

Also, I ran Peacekeeper Battery Test down to 5% and it got nearly exactly 2.5 hours at 40% brightness on WiFi. Peacekeeper is a rather intense benchmark but I don't think it's too much more than 'active' web browsing would be, especially if you like to keep music from youtube running in the background.

Apparently so. From what I've seen from posts about the GE40, GE60 and comparable barebone models (like mine which will arrive soon), nobody has had luck. People have tried ones from laptopvideo2go and also tried to modify manually. That was over a week ago though and I know from personal experience that it's easy to just solve a problem and forget to post because you're so busy using the machine ;)

Fiddlesticks. It really bugs me that I don't have mine yet so I can put hands on it and help figure this out. I've been annoying the heck out of everyone trying to pre-troubleshoot, but apparently it gives no errors or documentation and just fails on reboot. Is that pretty much your experience mrblue?
