I've noticed at random times even during boot and when waking up from sleep it will alternate between the nvidia and intel graphics. It might just be some kind of optimus initializing process. So far from what I've seen you can't disable Optimus (would have to search online) without uninstalling the drivers for the nvidia card. and only using Intel. I did run the MSI battery conditioning program overnight and noticed afterwards the initial battery estimate is now 5 hrs and 18 mins on the power saver setting. My guess is that's generous and it would be more like 4-4 1/2. Time will tell.

Well... thanks nstech. My fan started to make rattling sounds just after 2 weeks of usage (and i was not abusing the turbo button anyway), so i think it was mainly bad luck and those stupid nstech fans... I really hope the next batch of barebones / ge60-70 start to get new and better fan models...

If someone is not already aware, majster msi can supply replacements for this model.

I did get to do a little more with it this weekend. While downloading some more apps and doing web browsing stuff I'd say I got in the lower 4 hour neighborhood. If I really took the time to play with brightness and other settings I probably could get that closer to 4 1/2. At one point the estimate said only like 2 hours with 90% battery, but then I realized I still had it in High Performance mode from when I was gaming. Changed that back to power saver and it went back up.

One little thing I did have to look up was I noticed my laptop was at 97% and I plugged it in to game and noticed the battery read (97%, plugged in-not charging). I was worried I had broken the power connector or something, but it turns out that MSI has a charging thing they do. I found this explanation on another forum "This is normal behavior. Once fully charged, the notebook will stop charging the battery. Once the battery level reaches 95%, the battery will be charged again. This prevents the battery from being damaged from being constantly charged, and slightly reduces power consumption while plugged into the mains." So it looks like it is something by design, not something broken.

I did do some light gaming with StarCraft 2 at native resolution and played for like an hour and temps weren't bad at all even without using a laptop cooler. I did turn the turbo fan on just to see, but I never saw the GPU temps go past like 75C. The underside of the laptop didn't even feel hot, just the air coming out. The only spot on top that was warm was the spot right between the keyboard and the touchpad, which I read elsewhere in this thread is right near the CPU.

So far the only annoyances I've had are Windows 8 complaints vs complaints about the actual laptop.

Ah alright! Seems I'll be going with the GE60 then, it does seem like a pretty good laptop with no extremely major issues thus far. Thank you so much for all your help, I really appreciate it :)

Don't expect to get 4-5hrs with usage.
I can get a little over 4 hours with wifi off, brightness all the way down, and the mechanical HDD off (my primary is a 120GB ssd). This works for taking notes.
The weight is fine as long as your bag is big enough.

Can you monitor your CPU/GPU voltage during usage with AIDA64 or GPUZ?
Clean your heatsink/vent and clean-up if necessary.

It's likely triggering on a background program (keyboard light manager for instance), go through them all on the nvidia panel. You can also add the indicator in the bottom from the nvidia control panel (check the tabs on the top of it) to say what programs are using it (though it does not always get everything).

There are processes that may use 3D acceleration so it's normal to see the orange light to come on randomly.
But shutdown must have something to do with either CPU or GPU overheating, or AC adapter overload.
Make sure BIOS and EC firmware as well as Intel/Nvidia drivers are up-to-date for best computing experience.

What did you do to fix the 'orange light always on' issue? I updated from Win8 to Win8.1 today, updated all the drivers and the keyboard firmware (following MSI's procedure). Everything seems to work correctly except the power light is always on orange. The blue light does flash on boot as per usual.

Reinstall drivers with a clean install. Clean Intel and Nvidia drivers with DDU and wifi turned off, install first MSI webpage's Intel VGA driver and then Nvidia latest one.

The New GE60 MSI models as we have seen in gentech's review ran at high temps. of 90+ with factory paste. It seems the fan of the GE60 is slightly smaller compared to the GT60, the copper tubes in the GE60 are only 2 compared to what seems like 5 in the GT60 and in the GE60 the HDD is placed in the Secondary Bay making the heat concentration more towards the right side as CPU,GPU,HDD are all on the right vs Primary Bay in the GT60 non pro which places the hard disk to the far left away from the CPU,GPU's heat. Are these valid reasons to conclude that with or without proper paste, the GE60 will remain hotter than the G60 in general? What do you GE60 owners think?

I want to share an intersting thing. The WEI (windows experience index) score of my GE60 2oe was arround 5. Yesterday I did a ram update - from 8 GB to 16 GB. Then the WEI score increased to 7.1. Actually the one with Desktop graphical performance was the lowest and it was showing its score. Suprisingly, it increased with a ram update. Maybe these laptops work better with 16 GB rams :) ?

WEI will not benchmark the Nvidia GPU but Intel Graphics Device.
Try using 3DMark 11 or 2013 to compare the before and after instead if you want the correct results.

Anyone having BSOD problem while playing game ?

I just bought my GE60 2OE yesterday, the spec is i7 4700MQ, GTX 765M, 16GB RAM. It came with DOS OS, so i installed it with Windows 8 64bit. I also installed all the drivers included in the disk that come with it.

I get BSODs caused by ntoskrnl.exe message everytime i play game ( i only tried 2 game, Wargame Airland Battle and Banished ).

Anyone have this problem ? Any fix would be appreciated :D ( sorry for my bad english )

I just noticed that i have 2 different RAM with 2 different voltage, 1.35 volt and 1.5 volt ( both show as DDR3 in BIOS), i heard that Haswell only support DDR3L RAM, is this that caused the problem? should i return the NB ?

You can't use 1.5V at all, so you will have to remove it.
Haswell supports DDR3L which is 1.35V only.

Hello! I own a GE60 2OE and recently I have noted some issues of various slowness. I have compared my pc performance while playing Titanfall, and with maximum video settings the game is unplayable, while my friend pc which has same components as mine (he owns a Alienware 14) is fine with maximum settings.

    My specs are:
    Intel Core I7 4700MQ
    Geforce GTX 765M
    16gb Ram
    hdd 750gb

the only difference with my friend's is that he owns a SSD 128gb

Besides I have an old version of the bios (E16GCIMS.110) but I can't get the new one E16GCIMS.117 to update because, despite I followed the procedure on the website, I keep getting a BOOTMGR missing error when starting from USB to get to FreeDOS

    anyone has any ideas?

What other applications are installed on your laptop? Check under Task Manager -> Startup and see if there's anything running that shouldn't be, or something you can disable. What kind of anti-virus are you running?

Basically look for anything that could be taking up resources.

as meaker said, i guess the 2 open spots are just for msata..
i tried to plug an old pci-e ssd (16gb) in one of the open spots but the computer didnt recognize it.
im guessing that usb adapter wont work either.
i guess it would only work if the adapter had an onboard serial chip and showed up as a sata drive.

yeah after doing some checking around what i thought was a pci-e ssd i had from an old asus netbook only works with that kind of port for that one netbook.

i guess ill save up for a msata anyway.

now.. when i play games the touchpad gets very hot. from the cpu im guessing..

some people in this thread talk about undervolting it.. how do i do this?

ive already repasted it. it actually wasnt too bad when i took it apart, but i put new paste on it anyway. i used artic-5
the temps went from 97 ish to 87 ish.. still kind of hot tho.

    Can anybody help !!!

    Update

I have MSI GE60 0ND - 427UK MS-16GA with 128 SSD - I need restore to factory settings but the F3 recovery process fails to run. I burned a restore DVD set with the built in process which only created 2 DVD disks. When I started the factory restore asked for it wanted a third. I now require copies of the factory restore disks or iso images to burn them myself. Can anyone help.

Is anyone experiencing problem with the gaming mouse coming with the laptop? I have Ge60 2oe and windows 7 is installed on the laptop. When I connect the gaming mouse, it's not working sometimes. When I check the device manager after connecting the mouse, it shows an error about a "bluetooth periferial device". I don't know what the problem is, there is usually no problem but sometimes it makes me sick. Any solution?

Just picked up the GE60 i7 4700MQ (2.40GHz)/765M that newegg currently has for $999 and after reading through the entire 80+ page thread, the first thing I did before turning on the machine was pop off the bottom cover and check out the heatsinks and sure enough they really do slather on the thermal compound quite liberally from the factory. I cleaned up the mess and reapplied just a thin amount of the excess compound and put everything back together.

Playing Tombraider 2013 for about an hour, I get max temps of 84C on the CPU and 79C on the GPU, would I get much improvement reapplying a better compound? I get similar CPU temps running the 1024 benchmark of wPrime. Simcity 2013 also looks and runs fantastic as well.

And speaking of which is it true they actually use Arctic MX-2 from the factory? That stuff is pretty expensive yet they seem to waste a lot of it.

Am I reading this correctly that you used some of the compound that was originally applied to the CPU/GPU and that you did not apply brand new thermal compound?

If so, then yes you will want to put on brand new compound. When you re-use some, it can create air pockets which will result in higher temps. Your GPU temps look great though, CPU could be a little lower.

i noticed in the xtu program you can set the boost multipliers.
    default is 34,33,32,32

would it impact anything if i put it 32 all down the line? i dont think games will miss the 200mhz but i dunno if it would lower the temps any.

i undervolted the cpu voltage offset by -100mV, it did help alot

I have GE60-0ND - 427UK MS-16GA with 128 SSD - I need to restore factory settings but the F3 recovery process fails to run because it couldnt find the files and the burn DVD set I made from new 5 months back only created 2 DVD disks. When I start the factory restore process with them it asks for the 3rd etc. I need to get the copies of the dvd or the iso images asap. Please reply. Can anybody help !!!
