Do you work for Gentech? Nothing against you or them, but it seems like many of your topics are about how they sell this or that.

For those of you that own the laptop, what are your normal idling temperatures for the CPU? I think mine's running a little hot. It's idling around ~40C on power save modes.

gentech is my fav reseller but i support most of them, if not all of them.
I don't make much topics except for my personal reviews or for particular products i like or am excited about unless they already exist, which i then post in them
the great bulk of my posts are regarding supporting the community, reviews or general discussion. The vast minority are any sort of mention of brands etc.
We all have our personal preferences and brands in the end -
i still havent secured a third monitor to fully support matrix display via nvidia surround so i havent finished my review
Whats the general consensus of this gs vs ge series? -

I just unboxed my GS70 and it has a bright blue stuck pixel smack dab in the center of the screen. Does anyone know if this is covered under warranty or if it is something I can fix?
Edit: Just started an UndeadPixel cycle and I will leave it running. Still would like to know if stuck pixels are covered. -

As a quick check, under 6% load on 'Balanced' my CPU is running 37C.

Idle temps on 40s is alright. 30s is excellent. 50 is a bit hot but the veredict shall be about full load. Try wprime to stress your cpu with 1024m calc and monitor it.
As for dead pixel check the warranties offered to see if it has a zero dead pixel or a tolerance. Hopefully you can get it fixed! -

Mid 90s indeed is hot for the cpu. If you reach the threshold when you get throttle then its time to take action.
Is this machine workable like other msis? It looks like one single panel in the bottom. Might need to repaste. -

Anyone know the response time for the LCD for the GS70?In milliseconds.

Whats the weight of power brick for gs70 and gt60...???

Another quick question for GS70 owners. Do you find that the fan is constantly running on the CPU? Ever since mine started heating up, the fan has been constantly running (presumably, to cool it). I don't think it's normal and it's a little noisy. The constant noise is kinda annoying and I don't recall it before the temperatures started rising.
-
Can some owner of the gs70 please give some information about the fan noise? What is it like in idle, when doing desktop stuff and when gaming?
Also, is it cold enough to keep in your lap when not gaming?
Is the trackpad multi-touch (maybe this is obvious, but i'd still like to know) and is it any good?
Thanks in advance! -

Also, having never used a 17 inch laptop before I am surprised as to how much I love the spacious keyboard and screen. It's thin enough, so I am not worried about portability. I ordered this backpack since mine is too small: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007M4YEVI/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 -
I'm curious, did any of you GS70 users have Windows 7 running on it? I was disappointed to see it supports Win 8 only...
-
human_aft3r_all Notebook Consultant
Not to question your judgement friend, but windows 8 works perfectly and I see zero reason to downgrade. I am wondering why the insistence on Win7 is so common around here?
-
Plenty of reasons, but maybe some people don't want to upgrade, just like you see no reason to downgrade. I'd like to be given a choice and have no idea why brands like MSI or ASUS choose to drop driver support for Windows 7 altogether. But that's another debate, I was wondering if people had mainly configured the GS70 from resellers with Windows 7.

I ran wPrime with 1024m digits of Pi and these were the temps it reached (note the max column, I took the screenshot after it ended).

Hmm...A little bit high temps or ?

My fan seems to only run when gaming or if the fan vents on the bottom of the laptop are being covered for a while or if the power strip is covering the vent on the right side of the laptop.
-
Just to add a few notes. I used this on my lap for about 30 minutes while sitting in bed last night and didn't run into any heat issues. Also as a side note I used this on a plane last week flying from Az to Chicago. I use the laptop with in flight wifi and got off the plan with a little bit under half charge (probably used it for about 2 and a half hours). it also fit into the seat tray without any issues. Hope this helps.

If I run prime95 with 8 threads for any longer than 5-10 mins temps rise to the mid 90s, they will get to the upper 90s and 100 even if you keep running for hours. I've not seen them go over 100. Intel XTU indicates throttling but the clock speed always stays at 2.6GHZ or more even with all 8 threads running and XTU indicating throttling. If you also run UNigene Heaven 4.0 while doing the CPU stuff, you get more throttling but again, the CPU clock speed never falls below 2.6 ghz regardless.
this thing does run hot as I said when I first got it, but even running Unigine Heaven and Prime95 for hours, it doesnt seem to get slow or anything. The GPU can get around 80 max but I dont think ive ever seen in above that.
In normal gameplay/rendering the CPU gets to the low 90s or so (rendering), with gaming sessions the CPU stays pretty cool, in the 50s or 60s and I cant get the GPU to go over 50 or so in normal game use.
All these haswell cpus seem to run hot, but they do seem to take it better than the Sandy/Ivy bridge chips did, at least regarding reduced performance.
The benchmarks seem to heat the thing up MUCH more than actual use ever does, but even under that stress and those high temps the system stays fast. -
-
Edit: Nevermind, just read the reviews and it says the 17 inch laptops will fit.
Still would like to know what your thoughts on the backpack when you get it. -
Every laptop I have has idle temps in the upper 30s or lower 40s. And the fan periodically kicks up. I don't find this MSI GS70 to be any different in that regard to my Dell's from the past. I'll check my idle temps but I'm pretty sure they are in the 36 - 41C range depending on how long its been idle.
The fan doesn't stay on long when you are basically on the desktop but will periodically do a little burst, same as pretty much any laptop I've had. -

First test of gaming more than 10 minutes: Mirror's Edge plays fine (max settings) until a graphics intense area, then the framerate drops to unplayable and does not return if I go back to a calm area. Then, Mirror's Edge crashes.
I check my battery and it says "Plugged In, Not Charging". I have never seen that before but that looks like a problem to me.
Any help? This seems pretty serious. -

I got my GS70 today. I love it so far. The battery seems just fine. Not the greatest, but just fine. Will do for school. So far I have mostly downloaded one video. Watched about an hour long show. Did plenty of browsing. Installed a few apps and software. Have the CPU Z and the HWMonitor running. (I know they don't use a lot of resources. So it's about to hit 2 hour mark and the battery is at 48%.
Windows 8 is actually awesome. At first I thought the trackpad sucks, but it is because of the windows 8 trackpad cool features. So if you swype from the top while you are in the app store you will get a bar up top. If you swype from the left you get to switch between tasks of Metro UI. I didn't even have to install VLC player. It's kind of cool.
One thing I changed in the Intel HD graphics settings was when on battery set to maximum battery life. So may be that helps, not sure. But I set when plugged in to maximum power, would make sense lol right? Actually, may be not as it's best to use least amount of power when running on Intel, even when plugged in.
The thing is very sturdy.
I did notice a huge framerate drop when I unplugged the power supply during gameplay of SC2. I had it everything on ultra settings and so plugged in had from 70 to 80 FPS, but when unplugged it dropped to like 35FPS. That's still not bad for the ultra settings, but damn that kind of sucks.
EDIT:Okay I managed to kill the battery in 2 and a half hours. It seems the bright white background like on youtube kills the battery quicker than watching a movie. I managed to finish one game using a touchpad against very easy lol. I guess I could have finished it earlier but I noticed it said battery was at 13% and so I moved in with my forces.
Now the battery life would probably be better if I set the graphics to medium or so plus use darker background or watch just dark movies.
So from this I can kind of tell that the battery life will last about 4 hours if just using it for school stuff.
I also noticed that bluetooth is on by default and there is no function key to turn it off. So I'll have to go look in the settings to figure out how to turn it off. I'm sure if that was off, you could save a bit more battery life too. Of course if you just use the airplane mode then you will get closer to 5 hours of battery life. I wouldn't expect more than that. -

People getting high temps, use tools like Intel XTU to monitor usage and determine if you are throttling under heavy usage. While temps are high, the important thing is to check you still get your full performance as advertised. Those high temps might be too much thermal paste on your CPU from factory. If this is the case, it might be worth it to ask for custom paste job with IC diamond from resellers.

If anyone else is interested in this, the standby time battery is not very good. Over the period of like 6 hours when I slept it dropped 8 percent in battery.
Also when it is charging, the notebook can reach all the way to 100 watts while using. When the charge is full but still plugged in, the wattage consumption jumps between 30 to 50. When plugged in and the screen is closed the power adapter only uses 1.2 watts. When unplugged from notebook, but still plugged into the wall there is no power usage. I haven't really played any games while plugged in and observed power consumption. Probably won't go over 120 watts. -
Hi, I want to buy an MSI GS70 but I do not trust MSI warranty, especially on dead or bright pixels. ( MSI General Product Warranty Policy.) I read on this forum someone had this problem with a GS70, I would like to know if anyone else experienced this problem or this is an exception. The industry standard for LCD panel varies, but I think it is not acceptable to have one defective pixel on brand new laptop.
-
Agreed with the not acceptable. I for once have not experienced any defective pixels with this notebook. I also did not look insanely close at the screen, but if there is something on it I rather not know right now as everything seems just fine, from playing games, watching movies/videos, and browsing the web.

Is the gs70's cooling better or the blade pro's?
-
Has anyone tried booting off a USB drive yet? I try to boot Ubuntu to dual boot but it quits reading from the drive after I select the option to try Ubuntu without installing. Has anyone else had any better luck with dual-booting?

I noticed that the fans are spinning all the time as well except for when you close the screen. I didn't realize it was an issue, figured that is what we get for having power in a thin format.
So the fans are not supposed to spin all the time? -

Edit: Also that laptop bag I got doesn't fit the laptop. Anyone know of a stylish bag that will fit the machine well? I LOVE Freitag but I am pretty far from dropping $420 on a bag. http://www.freitag.ch/Fundamentals/Backpacks/HAZZARD/p/F48_00049 -

Thank you all for your comments. I am pleased to see that some store provides a good service, I will buy from Newegg because NCIX does not guarantee the exchange of laptop and refers to the manufacturer.
