I live in Belgium to and I'm interested in this laptop as it might be the rival of the HP Pavilion DV7 1090eb. So what shop you're speaking of?

I think I'm going to get mine from NCIX, being in the lower mainland (Vancouver) it cuts shipping costs out of my price, but the main thing is I just found out that to upgrade from 32 bit windows up to 64 is a matter of 10 dollars or so, which was one of the main reasons I wanted to order from a custom retailer like Xoticpc (full capacity RAM).

The only part that's kinda suck is that NCIX is pretty schizo when it comes to extended warranties, and really depends on the product. But I rationalize this little shortcoming by reminding myself that any RMA for a company in the States will be handled and paid for by yours truly, so it works out in the grand scheme of things.

Anyways whats the best possible RAM you can shove into this biz?

I have a GX600 and i have had LOADS of trouble with it! It started of with the monitor going dead after it had been in hibernate mode, i sent it for repairs and they changed the Motherboard but it didnt help so they updated the bios and that didnt work either. Now i have sent it for repair for the 4th time in 6 months ( i just dealt with it for a while but now im not taking any of this **** anymore and i wont give up until i get a refund ). ATM my real problem is not the monitor, that was fixed in the bios update but the constant overheating is really bad. I can play games on full graphics with no lag but the laptop overheats after 10 mins of gaming (tried lower settings as well but with the same result). I will try keep you updated about my battle to get my money back ;D

BTW if you are planning to keep your GX600 and it turns itself off you just have to remove the battery for 60 seconds (and ac power) and then plug it in again=) worked for me.

its hard to believe this gaming laptop has such a slow hard drive speed. Everything else looks decent for the price.

The one from ebay got a Nvidia 9600M GT with only DDR2... that's got to be a mistake right?
If it's really only DDR2 then it's a rip off  Then this 'gaming' laptop is not worth it's price imo...

I'd like to know as well. MSI shows it having DDR3 in the overview, but the specifications shows DDR2. Other things I'm not sure on are the LCD (Glossy or Matte?) and Bluetooth (Included?).

That was actually the first question that I asked the seller and he responded that it's DDR 3 512 MB. It was just a misprint in the specification.

Yeah.. I'm just looking at it now and it looks like he has updated it.
There's also a -029 one listed that is more expensive. I can't see any difference, though? :/

    Edit:
Ah, actually, it still says DDR2 in the table at the bottom. If it was like this before then just ignore what I just posted.

Andddd, the more expensive one has blu-ray. Just noticed. x.x

Yeah the specifications chart says "DDR 2" but they can't really change that because it's a picture file and all they did was copy and pasted the picture from the MSI site. But the correct specs. are in the description above that which says :

    The Unbelievable Visual Realism
    - The Best NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT 3D Graphic Card

    ( Built-in DDR3 512 MB VRAM)

The newest NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT 3D graphic card (Built-in DDR3 512 MB VRAM) delivers remarkable performance and the unsurpassed feature for any 3D high-definition game.

Yeah. I noticed they changed it in the details at the top - didn't realise the table was an image, though. :]

Haha, I want to buy this laptop so bad. I wish somewhere in the UK would start selling it.. I know that eBay guy ships worldwide, but £115 shipping is waaay too much.

    Hey Nina..

The ebay seller Frostycomputers just got the GX620 in stock and is selling it for $1299 and he ships to the UK for $80 US dollars which should be equal to £45

UK $80.00 UPS International shipping 1-3 business days w/ tracking

    see here: http://tinyurl.com/msigx620frosty

lol and don't worry about the "512MB DDR 2" in the description. It's really DDR 3. All they do is copy and paste the specs. without checking it out first.

This might not fit in right in this thread, but since we're on the subject; is it possible to switch the HDD for a 7200 RPM drive myself?

yes you can, and it should be a fairly easy process.
However, knowing msi, they might put a sticker saying that warranty is void if you open the notebook up :p (happened to the GX600 I think).
If the sticker is there, perhaps try once the year is up

Yes, the HDD is uprgradable and you can switch the 5400 rpm with a 7200 rpm HDD by yourself. The CPU is also uprgradable.

Wow, thanks for posting this. :D I am so glad.. I've been looking for a new laptop for what seems like ages now, and whenever I find one I like, they aren't available to the UK. xD I'm so glad this one is.
Altogether, it's going to cost me approx. £780 - that's including the UK plug and shipping costs too. I think this is worth it.. Although it's £100 more than the samsung r560 i was going to buy if this one wasn't available. o.o
    Thank youuuu.~ :)

This site did a quick review of the GX620's performance -- ~5200 points on 3DMark06 @ 1280x1024. That's pretty good, about the same as a desktop Radeon X1900GT/X1900XT.

I'll have mine tomorrow evening. It's currently sitting at a UPS distribution center about 30 miles away. :(

Yeah, too bad it didn't arrive in the distribution center until Saturday evening. I don't even know if you're even allowed to intercept a shipment, but oh well, I'll leave them alone just this once.

If you guys have any requests such as benchmarks, pictures, extra information, let me know and I'll have answers tomorrow night. The first thing I'm planning on doing is wiping out the Vista on it and installing Ultimate x64.

Yes, if you can please post benchmarks, pictures and anything you find interesting about the laptop.

In the other thread with the MSI-1651, I see a few people are downloading video drivers and modded INF's(whatever that is  ) because they were having trouble with running their benchmarks. I don't think that should be a problem with your GX620.

I'm glad i found this laptop, i was considering a dv5t before, but now i am going to buy this. And the 9600m GT will handel Crysis at medium settings just fine.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=286033

I read these benchmarks of dv5t, which has 9600M GT DDR2. And it handels Crysis at , medium settings. So the MSI GX620, which has 9600M GT DDR3, will handel with no problems. Same for UT3 and COD4. :)

Why is this notebook so good for gaming?
Doesn't it have a way too large resolution?

EDIT: My bet, there's a WXGA version available... now waiting for it to be available in Belgium.
Does anyone happen to know which shops in Belgium carry MSI notebooks?
    thanks!

You can always adjust the resolution of your notebook monitor to something smaller by going into your display settings. It's very easy to do.

That messes up the quality, the native resolution always gives the best picture doesn't it?

The native resolution does give the best picture, but when you're playing a game and need to reduce the resolution, you're not going to really notice a drop in the quality of games because games are always constantly in motion.

My quick summary for the night:

-This laptop is well worth the $1300 price tag. The build quality is solid, although I should mention now that the aluminum part is actually only the screen lid and the palm rest, everything else is composite. I just got it up and going with Ultimate x64, so I still would like to do more benchmarks and such. Another thing worthy of mention is that the system comes with 32 bit Home Premium, which is odd since there are 4GB of DDR2-800 RAM. Even though it works, Windows can only address 3072MB of it. So far, I really like it and think it is well worth the money.

Some aspects I can now confirm:
    -Laptop has bluetooth.
-RAM is Espida (Transcend OEM) DDR2-800.
-Geforce 9600M GT uses DDR3 VRAM.
-Screen is matte, same as the ones in the 1651 barebone systems. Although the color is not as vibrant or bright as the Macbook Pro, it will satisfied all but the most picky individuals.
-There are no dedicated volume control. Touch sensors consists of Bluetooth, Wireless on/off and the typical media controls (Note: The system has these turned off on initial boot, so don't forget to turn them on when you make it to Windows).
-The laptop dissipates heat well, with the GPU maxing out at 77C through 30 minutes of Fur Benchmark. Fan noise is excellent as well; virtually silent when idle or low load, very acceptable levels with high load. This is probably one of the quietest laptops I've heard when it is rendering 3D.

I have yet to test sound and the webcam, so I'll definitely post some more. The only thing that I am have a problem with is the keyboard. The shrunken '.', '/' and right shift key will take some time to get used to. There is some flex in the keyboard, and the keys are a little loud when pressed. While the red accents do make the laptop stand out, it wasn't as gaudy as I anticipated or depicted on MSI's pictures. I am a bit concerned about how when the red finishing will hold up, since it has no protective coating and a good rub on something fairly hard can chip or scratch it. Other than that, great fit and finish, no panels misaligned or popping off.

Looks sweet, Inferno! Could I just make a little request; if you could get me a picture of the laptop from the front when its up and running, that would be awesome. I'd just like to see the overall appearance with the touch panel and what-have-you, or something in that manner.. :)

Inferno, I don't know if you're familiar with the screens of the new Acers but I think those look very good, they're glossy however whilst the screen of that MSI are matte...
Are the colours still vibrant and lush on that MSI compared to those of Acer (5930,7730,...)?

    Thank you!

I have to admit, the 9600M GT holds itself together real well in the high resolutions. Having 128 bit memory bus and low memory bandwidth, I totally expected it to fall completely apart at 1680x1050. As you can see, Crysis and DMC4 is moderately smooth, albeit not quite playable, at those resolutions. You're going to want to stick to 1440x900 or less for everything out there, which should yield smooth and consistent performance.

The screen in the GX620 is a Samsung LTN154P4-L01. This is quite a welcome change from the usual Chimei and other low-end stuff I've seen. Chimeray, I haven't had the chance to see the new Acer screens yet, so I compared this screen to the best one I've seen on a laptop, which is an LG Philips matte 15.4" LED screen on a Macbook Pro. While the color isn't as vibrant, this is easily fixable by adjusting Digital vibrance in the nVidia control panel to 10-20%. Honestly, the Samsung screen is very nice, and while the color doesn't exactly pop out, they are very balanced.

Thanks for the pics and the benchmarks! I've got one of these laptops coming, and I'm quite excited to get my hands on it. I was debating between it and the G50V, but bang for the buck I think the 620 is a better deal.

I'm curious TRF-Inferno - you have run the crysis benchmark, but you ran it in DX9 mode, did you try the DX10 mode, and if you did, what were the results?

Thanks Inferno for the great pics and for the benchmarks of your new GX620. It looks really great. how's the sound quality and webcam? I know that laptops and their sound quality overall aren't the best but I'd just like to know about the GX620.

you can get it on ebay from the seller Frostycomputers and he ships it to canada

    http://tinyurl.com/ebay-frosty-msigx620

or you can go directly to his site www.frostycomputers.com and get it there.

    www.mwave.com also sells them too.
