Hey guys, I have been waiting for this GT628 to come out, that is equipped with the Nvidia GTS 160M. Suppose to come out MID OF APRIL but, This morning I contacted them via email and the associate responded with this....
Hi Marc,
I haven't seen this model showing on my April On-the-way shipping
schedule; therefore, I'll say this GT628 may released on May for
earliest possible.
Please check our website http://www.msimobile.com on late April for more
information.
Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to let me know.

That is bad to hear.
I purchased my gt627 and expect its arrival in 4-5 days. Thanks god I did not wait for this beast. -
I've contacted, msi again about the gt628, it might comeout on msimobile on April 18, 2009. The customer service from msi is not that bad. I tought it would be but I guess I talked to the right person with better knowledge about their products. Crossing fingers.
-
how much stronger is the Nvidia GTS 160M compared to the 9800GS
-
Doesn't even come close. 9800M GS>9800M GTS>GTS 160M>9800M GT. I believe it's close to 9800M GT. We'll see pretty soon.
-
The GTS 160M has a smaller die than the 9800M GS(and 9800M GTS and 9800M GT) so it should be a more efficient chip, but judging from Nvidia's(and notebookcheck's) specs, the GPU itself is similar to the 9800M GS/GTS. They have the same amount of processor cores, transitors and shaders.
However, the GTS 160M's clocks are higher than the 9800M GS(they're the same as the 9800M GTS though) and the smaller die may allow it to overclock better than the previous generation GPUs.
I'd say it should perform somewhere near a 9800M GTS or 9800M GT. A pretty decent gain although not a substantial one. I'd guess at best 25-30%. We'll have to see though. -
-
thank you +1 rep to all
-
Heh, this is discussed already.
Here. -
Any specs and price?
-
Specs here. Price I think is not awailable yet.
-
Thanks!
Seems very capable but will have to see what CPU is available and of course the $$$,but very nice overall especially with the BD player but if they could keep the cost at a reasonable level it will be a player. -
I think it will be about the same price as the GT627. Pretty much the change was the GPU;s thats it. Looks like everything stays the same.
-
-
I believe it will also be using DDR3 RAM memory instead the DDR2 that the GT627 currently is using. God Bless
-
Nope It will be again with DDR2
-
Like what I said, most likely or even will be, everything stays the same except the GPU itself. So, for the ones with GT627, if you by the GTS160M itself, it's a direct fit. And no I don't know where to buy em yet, all I know is the GTX280M, you can preorder the card by itself, from xotic pc. But that's different.
-
Soo will the GTX280M fit in the 627?
-
Nice, they still use the cheaper DDR2. DDR3 has NO benefits at the moment. Pure marketing - no performance or battery life difference. Maybe when Intel moves their controller into their notebook CPUs and allow OCing, there will be a difference, but not in our current hardware.
GTS 160M = 48W, GTX 280M = 75W - I think the 627 will have issues handling the heat and hence will not be possible. -
Offcourse 280M GTX, will not fit in the 627, I was just saying that you can pre order it individually. And upgrade the laptop for example in Sagers. What I was trying to say is, you can order 160M GTS to replace the 9800M GS on the 627.
-
I can't miss here to say...
If somebody sells his 9800M GS i buy it right away. Then we will make some d*ck measuring contest between 9800M GS and 160M GTS. -
This Italian website states that it comes with 4GB 1.066 MHz DDR3:
http://www.onehardware.it/26/03/2009/msi-gt628-un-notebook-per-videogiocatori-esigenti/ -
I can't find the site again, before when I did the searching I visited a lot of sites and either if was not mentioned what DDR type will be used or it was written DDR2. What is for sure - PM45 supports DDR3, it's only MSI who need to make some improvement to their current motherboard (current motherboard comes with 200 pin SODIMM and DDR3 needs 204 pin SODIMM), so to support DDR3. Since this laptop is beeing delayed, I think they did this excatly to bring it out with DDR3 memory. We'll see when it is on market.

Delayed? so no GT628 in Canada for the next 2years!?
They are about to release the 628 and we still have 1 model of the 627 that is 1800$ CND, and no GT725...lame oh, and don't even bother contacting MSI Canada... -
Canada's always been behind in terms of notebooks >.> Seems some companies just don't deem us as profitable as other countries. I mean, MSI already isn't that huge and mainstream so chances of their models in Canada is already low.
This machine pretty much looks like a GT627 judging from the specs aside from a GPU change so hopefully the price won't drastically increase since the GTS160M is basically an overclocked 9800M GS on a smaller die >_> -
The grill will be black instead of silver.. that's another difference.
-
Oh so they finally changed the chassis? Was about time lol
MSI(like Asus) seems to be recycling their notebook chassis's between series with little if any modificationsso this ia good thing lol XD -
And there don't seem to be any red markings on any of the keys....
I'm not sure which looks better 627 or 628 Hmmmm.... -
-
These look very nice, just wish it came with an other color besides red
-
Damm! i dont knoe if I can wait any longer, If I do, I promise you ill make sure ill be the first one to post benchmarks :]
-
any new news?
-
no news
no news is bad news -
indeed. no signs of it on the msi website either
-
ahhh! this makes me mad.
-
lol like what the thread says, delayed. Lol. That gateway 7805u w/ 9800M GTS is really tempting with 64bit and upgradable processor up to a T9900 3.06. Damm such a good value. All my friends couldnt wait and they bought it. The wuxga 1920x1200 on the gateway and 9800M GTS is s great, plays all games also. I dont knoe. I called msi again and they told me the 628 is not even on the april and may release date quiet yet i called 3 times just to ask the same quesition to get different answers from 3 different people. Lol. But damm atleast when we wer all waiting for the 725, it wasnt like this.
-
The Gateway is a very, very good performer, but the color UGHHHH! and 17" to big.
I want something that looks good and performs even better and MSI's fit the bill, too bad it's delayed.Any word yet? -
Like what i said, its not even on april or may releqse batch, thats what those associates told me that works at msi. Thy might be lying we dont knoe.
-
I'm guessing early May for US.
-
I wonder if it'll suffer from the same chassis problems the GT627 is suffering >.>
I mean, the grill is black now so maybe they changed the chassis build. -
What sort of chassis problems are reported for the GT627?
I'm sort of new to MSI laptops and honestly have not heard any bad news so any input would be great. -
Click Me
Basically, people have reported that the touchpad goes from matte to glossy quite fast if used even for a minimum of time. For some it was an oil buildup, but for tohers it was genuine wear after even few days' use.
Some people have reported this "glossy" issue to affect certain areas of the notebook where your hands usually lie(palmrests and such). Apparently, this problem is also present in the older ID-1651 models as well, just that I suppose not that many people owned an MSI(or a barebone) to really call out the problem.
However, in the thread there are "solutions"(or more so options so it beomes less bothersome) as to how to deal with the issue. -
Thanks for the input and link Melody.
So from what people are saying is the coating on the touchpad and palmrest rubs off, that's strange I have never heard about a coating being rubbed off so quickly.Hopefully if the updated GT628 comes out it will address some of those issues.Anything else I should be concerned about?
This laptops performance blows my mind especially with only 1 GPU, now it's time to decide if all the pro's outweigh the con's. -
Well people say it's unfortunate because they really do think the MSI is a good laptop but I suppose lesser chassis build should be expected for such a great price/performance ratio.
The only other thing I can recall is the keyboard flex and cramped keyboard, but the former can be fixed(there's a thread here with easy steps) and isn't so bad depending on the user and the latter can be gotten used to. -
This makes me sad... anyone else tried to call?
-
we want news! Allez MSI!
-
any news on this? i'm really liking the specs of the GT628, thinking it may be my next laptop.
-
Waiting also, but still no news. Their customer service has no information either.
-
Ibought a 725 instead of waiting. Right when the manager at msi told me the gt628 wont be at the april and may batch for release to resellers. Im like heck no aint waiting that long just for similar gt627 with just an upgrade of gts160m. Doesnt make any sense to me.
-
This panel has gone glossy.
Why cant MSI keep it straight?
That coating truly sucks, and it even does nt go away easily.
