You can create a thread asking for advice, or head on over to http://forum.notebookreview.com/forums/what-notebook-should-i-buy.16/ and tag @Phoenix and see if he replies.

But you also can or rather, should tag @Donald@HIDevolution or @Ted@HIDevolution

Don't be scared to ask them, yes they work for a shop, but their advice is sound and won't try and con you into items you want. You'll note that they actually told Phoenix not to opt for some options that saved him money. If that doesn't show integrity, I don't know what will.

I am not the best person to ask about different laptop models as I only look at the most high end machines. To give you better answers, I would suggest you contact [email protected] or @Galm

    @vampyx

If you don't mind me chiming in regarding advice.

For any purchasing decision I make, regardless if it's a car, laptop or TV ect... It comes down to these few personal decisions.
    • What do I want to do with the laptop
    • What key features do I care most about
    • How long do you expect the item to last till it's replaced
    • What's your budget, be realistic
Anything you want, but don't understand how it works, do some research or ask some advice and ask yourself if you need it. If you don't understand it, even after researching, you probably don't need it.

Hope that helps a little with the decision making. The rest, is purely aesthetic.

@Phoenix hey phoenix thanks for the advice, i have emailed donald. the machine you have is a real beast.

    @Fire_Child22
of course thanks for the advice! i really appreciate it!
i'm currently using a MBP from school and it's too weak to handle the things i need it to do.
i'm pretty surprised it hasnt broken yet. it always screams when im using it for certain things. LOL

i use CAD(Modo,Keyshot,Octane/Photoshop) to generate illustrations. Occulus Rift

i do abit of gaming but not a priority.
basically its like carrying a desktop around with me because i use a
filco mechanical keyboard along with the laptop usually. :O

Key features is a decent screen when i dont have a 27inch to plug it into.

i expect hardware to usually last around 2 to 3 years

And my budget is perhaps up to 4k usd or more. just dont need an overkill.

leaning toward MSI because of the heating. just need a machine with no headaches easy to use
    and get setup.

Honestly speaking, your budget allows for quite an impressive range of options. So lets break it down a bit further.

What size monitor are you thinking. These days you can get upto a 21" freaking monitor.

As a content creator, you probably may prefer a 4K and or IPS. But on a laptop this is perhaps a waste and would recommend the 120hz option. It can be colour calibrated to suit your content fine and should not have many reproduction limitations should you print your work while allowing you to enjoy your games and with some 3rd party applications, movies at impressive 120hz.

Hardware to last 2-3 years, anything skylake or kaby lake and really any pascal gpu that's a 1060 or above should last for 2-3 years no problem, even longer should you opt for the 1080 solution.

MSI does indeed have very good cooling right now compared to say Alienware due to it's thicker size and thus larger fans and non shared heat pipes between gpu and cpu in the titan range.

However if your focus is more CAD design, perhaps think outside the box for workstation type laptops that have other cpu and gpu options. While the current pascal and kaby lake will handle the loads fine, a Quadro paired with a Xeon chipset may have more support with the programs you intend to use.

I used to do 3D animation and modeling, and back when I was using MAYA or 3DSMAX, they had specific drivers for FirePro and Quadro gpu's that may edge the performance over a GTX card or Radeon options.

The hardest thing for the types of programs you intend to use where HDD speed and cpu grunt when rendering. However GPU's assisted rendering is more supported these days, so your focus should be on fast, high capacity HDD's. The best performing NVMe drives currently are Samsung's range. With the PRO the best you can get, but the EVO and m.2 options are cheaper and still considerably quick. I'd not use CAD/3D or Photoshop programs without these unless you intend to use a scratch disk.

Should you go down the MSI range, the steelseries keyboard is amazing to use, one of the best keyboards I've used on a laptop, and should be enough for you to consider leaving that keyboard behind. But with that work you do, I'd still carry either a tablet/pen and or external mouse. While the touchpad is quite good for a laptop, it's useless for your application.

Now, I've not kept up with CAD/3D programs, nor have I until recently researched into laptops again, so there may be other options I've not considered in my above description. But I'm sure others will be able to chime in on more up to date options.

@Ted@HIDevolution, @Donald@HIDevolution and @whoever is in the CAD industry that can offer this fellow some advice.

In fact he made a change to the price on the website that saved me $70.00. He also suggested 2 other discounts that I benefited from. This man represented his company well ! Awesome man! Donald is a great person indeed! Tag me when you get your machine if you want me to tweak it for you!

This is what I'll tweak for you:

1- Uninstallation of all the Windows Store Garbage Apps
2- Removing all Windows 10 Privacy Invasion stuff like Telemetry, sending your keystrokes to Microsoft, automatically installing suggested apps in the background, allowing Microsoft to conduct expirements on your laptop, disabling automatic driver updates through Windows updates, disabling Windows 10 ads, disabling cortana, etc.
3- Removal of nVIDIA and Intel Telemetry
4- Adjusting a lot of options in PC Settings like disabling Windows Tablet Mode (you have a laptop not a tablet), disabling suggestions appearing in the start menu, disabling automatically connecting to Paid WiFi Hotspots, disabling Game DVR which reduced performance in games, and a lot more.
5- Replacing Cortana with a much better search tool that finds results instantly
6- Restoring the classic Windows 7 Calculator and Windows Photo Viewer
7- Restoring the Classic Windows 7 Start Menu

Phoenix Thank you for your offer to tweak my machine ! I am kind of concerned about the dragon center, I am getting a clean install and I am not sure I what it reinstalled. If I don' t install it how can I use the utilities that it works with like fan profiles, bios setting, color profiles and the 5 specialty buttons on left top of laptop? Are there any other apps you think I should omit ?

I recommend you use the Dragon Center personally, it has a centralized place for overclocking, monitoring voltages, fans, changing keyboard lights. I haven't had a single problem with it.

I don't know why you don't want it otherwise you need to use a diff. app for everything, HWiNFO for monitoring fans / temps, XTU for overclocking, Steel SeriesEngine for the keyboard lights, and I don't even know how to use HWiNFO for controlling the fans, only Mr. Fox does

Not all want running ODM's Bloatware :D

Not all brands laptops can use Hwinfo like we could with older proper Alienware socket machines. Even the new flimsy AW ECHOBOOKS have started having problems with Hwinfo fan control. You need re-start this Jokebook if you're finished with use the fan control, because the Hwinfo fan control take fully control over EC firmware. And yeah, Dell don't want fan control in their main Software Bloatware. Dell is Yesterday!!!
would be nice. But where should I run benches? And if I had one, the Evoc machine MUST have pure socket hardware bruh

Phoenix do you still use O&O DiskImage over Macrium Reflect 7. When I do a search all the post are yrs old. I will have OS drive Samsung 960 EVO 500GB M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe and stroage drive Samsung 850 EVO Series (3D VNAND Tech) SATA3 6Gb/s 2TB SSD. I want to be ready to made a reinstall image before I install all my programs. I read where you were having problems with Macrium Refect but that was with v.6 not v.7 right?

I use v7, it has an improved backup/restoration engine which is much faster. It's paid though.

Even the latest v6 works fine now albeit a bit slower. choose your poison

I just spent a few hours with @Phoenix setting up my beast - he deserves all the credit he gets here and more. He truly is an amazing individual and very selfless. It's incredible that a person I've never known or actually met is willing to go through such efforts ensuring that I will be able to enjoy something that much more that has absolutely nothing to do with him or his own benefit.

@Donald@HIDevolution, you guys came through. My machine arrived with a nice OC and so far the temps have been great. Your service has been excellent and I can fully understand why so many here choose and speak highly of HID.

Thanks to @Phoenix and HID for everything. I'm excited to get into this machine and see what it can really do.

Placed my order yesterday for a MSI 16L13 from HID/Donald. So excited to finally get this laptop as I have been contemplating it for quite a long time. Donald was very helpful and quick to respond to my emails if I ever had any questions about what I wanted to do. Everything went smoothly and I am "patiently" waiting for my new laptop, can't wait!

By patient I mean refreshing my order status every day as if it's going to change from "pre production" to anything else over the weekend on non business days.

    Updated just now !!!!!!

In Production - A dedicated build technician has begun working on your system. The finish line is near! Once the build is complete, the technician will benchmark, burn-in, test your system for faults, and make necessary adjustments. The build supervisor will sign off on the work order when your system passes all tests.

Maybe I will have it by the weekend !

When I start laptop for first time should I follow NBR Windows 10 Clean Installation Guide or stop windows from updating before we meet on TeamViewer or just login and let it update then meet on TeamViewer? I watch HD movie's on two TV's at once hope that is fast enough, think it may be 20gig download and 5 something upload.

Yes follow the welcome wizard in the clean installation guide, that is, do not connect to the internet otherwise you will be forced to login with a Microsoft Account

You can run the updates that's fine. In fact, do all the updates to save me some time
