No worries. This is an invaluable resource. Glad I could be of some assistance, I make use of it often enough

Should I get the latest drivers from the msi website or getting here is an equivalent method of getting them? I'm more worried about the bios, is the latest release the latest and greatest?
-
Only exceptions are perhaps if @Phoenix has a slow week .
By all means if NVidia tells you to update, do the update. That's about the only thing I do differently. -

New steelseries update messed up my install. Wouldn't detect the GT73 keyboard or rival 700 mouse

Has anyone found a source for the Thunderbolt NVM firmware? On my GT73VR, I'm running version 18.07 while my friends GS has version 21 and Intel's most recent appears to be 25.

Yeah. All other versions have worked fine so hopefully just a point update but. As the rival 700 shouldn't cause an issue either.

so about this 'new is always better' thing...Who's going to flash this first?

I'll flash it if someone can verify it has the new CPU ucode (microcode) update. I don't want to deal with boot loops and clear CMOS again just trying to set my command rate back to 2T so I can flash...and THEN set it back to 1T and more boot loops....

Ok I flashed it and it soft bricked --and this was after I reset everything to default too, exactly like going from .313 to .319, but this time it was worse.
Power off a few times worked on .319, but not here.
I had to clear CMOS to get the system back. No amount of power on/off cycles would get it up after flashing was completed.
After clear cmos and one manual power cycle, it boot looped 5 times and then worked normally. Looks like the kaby lake microcode was updated too. The windows ucode update is reporting that no update is needed.
For those who don't know how to clear CMOS, this is a 100% guaranteed RMA in the works...
I wasn't scared since I do have a Hardware flasher but still...
Doesn't the GT73VR have two Bios chips? A main and a backup?Donald@Paladin44 likes this. -

One of the gentech people said the GT73VR has two Bios chips.
Which is why clearing the CMOS causes 4 or 5 boot loops...
I think I even saw one of the older MSI laptops with a picture of *two* Bios chips, (or at least two PLCC8 chips right next to each other, one with a blue dot, one with a yellow (or red?) and one was the primary Bios chip).Donald@Paladin44 likes this. -

I disagree somewhat. I shall wait with bated breath for YOUR laptop's Software page to be updated I accept that the chips are different, but very much doubt the driver package has too many differences for each MSI laptop. Its a bit naive to think that the drivers are going to be machine specific, think about how many times MSI/Realtek/Microsoft would-have to tweak drivers for specific laptops/ranges. I've been doing this long enough to realise that manufacturers aren't that crazy - it would be a nightmare support-wise if they did. Plus, Given MSI's fetish for changing model range numbers when someone on the dev team breaks wind...... I'm sure they don't want to have 8000 versions of a driver package to suit.
I have been using what you post on MY laptop. ALL have worked without issue. If that weren't the case, I wouldn't even be allowed to install. So I call partial BS I'm afraid. The only thing I haven't installed from your GT73VR Titan Pro is the Thunderbolt driver because (duh!) my machine doesn't have it. -

So a) there are incompatiblity issues ranging from such nuisance like the one I posted above to crackling in the speakers or worse audio quality
b) You gain absolutely nothing when it comes to driver updates, it won't make your computer any faster, the only thing that would is nVIDIA's graphics drivers and even that is questionable with their horrible drivers team now, it's the draw of the luck
To summarize, there is no need to waste calories on sourcing the latest drivers from different models unless you know for a fact that it will fix some problem that you have or perhaps support a newer OS. Like for example, I don't mind stealing Intel Chipset Drivers, IMEI, IRST, Card Reader (after verifying the driver INF file contains the model of my laptop's card reader) but audio drivers, I would really avoid that.
