Does anyone have any idea yet for a exact release date, because, i cant stand the waiting. I check everyday, but it just says: New Product, Release Date Unknown. I also mailed with MSI a couple of weeks back, but no response.

Unfortanately my retailer has updated the specifications of the European 017NL model, and it appears that it does not have a Blu-Ray drive. So I will not be buying it.

Guys, the man I ordered my GT725-212US from on eBay has kept in contact with me seeing as that model is pretty much being discontinued as he has been told by MSi. He called me yesterday to offer me another similar laptop (some Asus model), but he also told me that the GT729, according to MSi, should be releasing in the U.S. sometime in late July to mid August.

This is still a bit of speculation, but I think it's gonna be here before we know it.

    http://eu.msi.com/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=135&cat2_no=271&prod_no=1794

Btw, the specs up there, if ur buying the 017NL like me, then these are the correct specs:
    http://www.alternate.nl/html/summaryListing.html?searchCriteria=729&cat1=036&cat2=334&cat3=000

And this website keeps up with the prices and when the have them in stock:

Frostycomputers.com is selling a new version of the gt729

here the link to the ebay page:
    http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300329224822

Do you think this is a good buy?

    Here the Specs:

I am concerned about the Resolution. Read in different other Forums that higher means less gaming power and they would go for a lower resolution. Is that so?
Read somewhere else that you cannot actually boost a quad core cpu. Is that true as well?

    Thanks for your answers.

Great that there is another version out that, that is already in stock.
Its a german version i guess so...
About the resolution, well, u dont have to use 1920 x 1200 if youre games
dont run smooth on that res, just use 1680 x 1050 then, there is no difference
    with a native 1680 x 1050 and a 1920 x 1200 that runs 1680 x 1050,
so its really more like an option to go higher, but your not obligated or something.

No, it doesnt. Just try it with the computer you are on now, just lower the res, and see what happens. Everything just gets less smoother and stuff, but i doesnt matter if its native or you programm it to a resolution, effect is still the same.

Yes, that is correct. The sharpest resolution on an LCD is always the native one. Then, as you go to lower resolutions, the image gets more and more blurred, due to being scaled to fit the screen.

1680x1050 on a native 1680x1050 panel should look better/sharper than 1680x1050 on a native 1920x1200 panel (for example). Though it depends how good your eyesight is, and how close you sit to the screen.

    Hey guys!
I'm new here (this being my first post).

For a few months I've been saving up for MSI's gt725-212US, and shortly before I'd saved enough it disappeared. Based on what I've read I've pretty much concluded that it has been discontinued. Xoticpc told me that "MSI has discontinued that model and are currently revising it/updating it." Of course the next day the 074 reappeared on their site. I'm too picky with what I want in the laptop I have found no other laptop that satisfies me. I require a 17" screen (MUST be 1920x1200/1080), quad-core, 9800m gtx or better graphics, blu-ray, 4gb ram, <$1700, etc...the gt725-212 fit perfectly with that description.

Anyway, I'm not really sure what my question is, but the gt729 us being released within the next month in the US, based on what I've read. Frosty Computers sells two models of the gt729, neither with the product name extension; e.g. gt729- ABC or gt729- 123. So I don't know if it's an European version or what. Even if it a European version (I'm in the US) I suppose it would be okay if I got one, right? Here's the link: http://www.frostycomputers.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=GT729&CartID=1
They also state that it's pre-order only, and will ship out early to mid august. That's fine. But since the European version has already been released by MSI, and this has a wait on it, I can assume it's the US version? With shipping it is $20 less than my limit. (w00t)

Also, if the gt725 has been discontinued, why haven't MSI removed it from their product site (msimobile.com)? Either they haven't discontinued it, or haven't gotten around to removing it yet.

    Thanks.

If you can wait a little while, it's probably worth waiting for the Quad version of the GT729... The extra graphics memory will help at that high resolution in the future (or now in the case of GTA4). I can almost guarantee it will be in or VERY close to your price range because of what Frosty has the preorder for.

I had a GT725 ordered last week; the order got screwed up and my unit must have been allocated to someone else.

Anyway, the supplier said that the 725 was now an "end-of-life" product. I rang MSI UK today, and a very helpful guy confirmed the specs for the GT729.

There will only be the one model of the GT729 according to the guy, and it's a shame the screen won't be 1920x1200 (apparently this screen is hard to get to fulfill existing GT725-210UK orders, hence going for the lower res panel on the GT729).

It's going to have the same price as the GT725 and I was told *should* be available from "mid-August".

Ok Guys. If you live in USthe and want the higher-end gt729, this is really just what you need to know. I contacted Frostycomputers.com because I still had a few concerns about what I was actually getting. Within a few hours I got a very friendly, personal response from one of their staff. Here is my email to them:

    And their response:

So this sounds good to me. A few questions answered. Race you to first place in line! :)

    Could it be a mistake?

Every version of the GT729 has DDR3, if a site says that it doesnt, then they are wrong, the GT725 however does not have DDR3.

    Aright awesome!

So Im buying this laptop for college and I was wondering how manoeuvrable u think itll be.
I dont care about weight much as its only 7 pounds(Iv carried my share of 30 pound backpacks in school), but how hot do you think it will run?
Also, how long do u think the battery life will last?

Just to be straight, Im a huge fan of games and thats why Im buying this thing, but do you think its also suitable for class?

In general 17" laptops are not very portable, but for school they're fine. I've read that the gt725 (not the 729) is actually lighter than many 17"laptops. When gaming this laptop, even with the 9 cell battery, only makes about 1.5 or less hours. Barely 2 hours watching a dvd. Now note that these figures are what I read on a review for the gt725-075US, which disappeared months ago. That laptop also made pretty high temps, so resting it on your lap might be a bad idea after a few hours. And you might want to put a divider up between you and that person next to you because all that hot air coming from the laptop might... Also that had a 2.5GHz (or close- I don't remember exactly) dual core cpu, the the higher-end gt729 has the quad core, but clocked lower (2.0GHz). I wonder what kind of difference that will make.
Also, I know someone at my school who is a nerd and likes games, so about a year ago he bought a gateway p-something laptop (dual core, p8600, I think, 8800m gts, 4GB RAM, etc) and it was 17". He has no trouble carrying it around. He doesn't put it in his backpack; rather a separate laptop case.

So yes, I think this laptop is perfectly suitable for class.

Im gonna use the GT729 for school aswell, i need to travel quite a lot to get to my school, bike, train, and a brisk walk. But, this laptop, the 017NL version anyways, comes with the Backpack from MSI, so i wont have any trouble carrying this arround. I have a 15,4 now, but its in a ty backpack.

    First issue has arrived.
My boss is on vacation, and me and a few other
co-workers are running the business for 2 weeks.
We can pretty much order what ever we want, but i
made the mistake of asking my boss when one of my co-workers
had him on the phone. He said that he will order it when he
gets back, thats on the 2nd of August so have to wait till then.
Just praying that they are still in stock then, and not sold out or something
because then i will go MAD.

I just pre-ordered mine from them! And a few hours they showed up and xoticpc ( http://www.xoticpc.com/index.html) Save a few $$ there. Note that they just call them the "MSI GT729" and don't add the suffix (gt729-017 or whatever) because the US names haven't been released by MSI yet. Everyone says the ETA will be mid august. That's what I'm waiting for.

Read that c2q is actually worse than c2d when gaming. Is gt729 only available with Q9000 and 2.4 ghz c2d or with 2.5 ghz as well?

Dont believe that expo, only in single threaded games, but in a proper enviroment with multicore, the q9000 can beat even the powerfullest extreme series duo core.

So u think, the c2q 2.0 (which can't boost) can beat a c2d 2.8ghz (which can boost) in games like gta4, crysis and cs:s? Cause notebookjournal.de tested gt725 with c2q and c2d and in every game (Inc. Gta4) the c2d was faster, even without the boost. (if u don't speak german, on the last page it has the comparison graphs)

I just saw that the company i wanted to order them is already out of stock.
So, i just blew the whole thing off. Im buying a Desktop for 1600 euros and
thats that. Quick Specs: Intel Core i7 920, Asus P6T Deluxe V2, Asus GTX 295, Coolermaster M850, SilverStone Raven RV01+W, 1 TB Samsung, 3 x 750GB Samsung in RAID 5. So, i guess i wont be on this forum until next year, when im buying a new notebook. So have a great year all.

Frosty is saying the Q9000 can be overclocked to 2.3GHz. I havent kept up to date with the 725 thread, but I heard it could not really be overclocked? Does anyone know for sure what the current situation is regards o/c the Q9000?

    Hy guys.
Does anybody of you even tried 8 GB of DDR3 in GT729?
I know they´r still pretty expensive and MSI technical table says (max. 4GB), but used chipset PM45 can hold up to 8GB ram...
After few moths (years?), when 4GB modules fall under 100E, it can be best possible upgrade for me.
