You have two sata ports, your 2.5" bay and optical bay.

So my new Leopard 940M came today and as it turns out, it does have an empty mSATA slot above the wireless card. Here are some pics. In the top picture you can see the empty riser at the top, and the part number- GP60 2QE-836- is shown at the bottom (I blanked out barcodes and serial numbers from the pics). You can also see the black screw below the bottom right corner of the wireless card- this is screwed into an empty stake and it intended to hold down the mSATA card. The bottom picture shows a closeup of the riser and the text "SSD" printed on the mainboard.

I will be getting a mSATA drive in the mail tomorrow, and I plan on cloning the hard drive to it and switching it over to be the boot drive. I will report on how it goes.

Interesting, we are not stocking the new one so that must have changed since the old one. I'll be interested to see your results.

Generally, it is not an advertised feature by MSI and we've seen mixed reviews about this therefore it's possible that there are two types of PCBs out there.

Thinking about a memory upgrade, but unable to find the anywhere a MSI16D3LS1KBG online for UK delivery :(

Not really sure what the benefits of having 'matching dimms', or even of having 'matched' dimms' to be honest. Looks like the msi16d3ls1kbg is not that great anyway - http://www.memorybenchmark.net/ram.php?ram=Kingston+MSI16D3LS1KBG/8G+8GB&id=5217

Considering just purchasing another 8gig dimm from here http://www.kingstonmemorycards.co.uk/laptop/msi/msi-gp60-laptop

Think this dimm would be bottleneccked by msi dimm, but would give me 16gig. Any advice from those more knowledgeable than myself?

    Cheers,
    Rich.

So long as the voltage, speed and timings are the same then you should have no issue.

Davin, how did this install go? I'm interested in hearing more about the msata install. What model msata drives are you getting? Is there an optimal setup for combining the 2.5" SSD and msata SSDs in a raid of some sort? Is it any more efficient to have a 250gb msata + 250gb 2.5" SSD than to just have a 500gb SSD? I'm trying to figure out if I should get an msata SSD in addition to the 2.5" to replace the hard disk or just spend all that msata money on a bigger 2.5" SSD. Any thoughts?

    Hey there,
Just got myself an MSI GP70-2QE and the manual states
    About Hard Disk Drive
Your notebook is equipped with a 2.5-inch hard disk or mSATA SSD (optional).
and the MSI website here: http://www.msi.com/product/nb/GP70-2QE-Leopard.html#hero-specification states:
Storage: up to 128GB SSD+1TB SATA 7200 RPM

has anyone tried msata SSD larger than 128GB
I would prefer to get a 250GB msata SSD but quite a few in this thread even seem to doubt 128gb being possible.
    any advise?

If the msata slot is full size, you should be able to fit up to 1TB msata SSD. Though I am not aware of any particular limitation that would make you not being able to use it.

Thanks, it's just the official MSI site stating the "upto" 128GB that made me a little cautious about getting a larger SSD than stated to be compatible, even though it sounds an odd limitation

You are able to fit any capacity msata ssd in that slot, most likely its listed that way because of msi prebuild did not come with anything higher at the time the spec list is made.

Currently, there's virtually no limit with mSATA therefore you can install any size of SSD.

Thanks. Ended up going with a 250GB Crucial MX200, working a charm. The laptop 100% refused to boot into Crucials firmware update utility (Crucial Storage Executive), no matter what i tried. I had to update the drives firmware on my PC's motherboard which booted into the utility 1st time.

Only complaint I have with the laptop is I can't get the numlock to stay on, every reboot it turns off again. tried changing the numlock toggle in BIOS but no luck. Checked the MSI site for a newer BIOS but all they have listed is E175AIMS.10H and my laptop came with a newer BIOS E175AIMS.10I

    Hello everybody

What's the maximum resolution that the GP60 2OD-072US can handle in an external monitor? Because I'd like to buy a Ultra QHD (3440x1440) monitor and I'd like to know if I would be able to use it with this laptop.

    Regards.

Unless someone has it available as a torrent for download, you can contact it MSI for recovery media - assuming they have it available.

As ProStar said, the only way to get it is to contact MSI directly. Please note charges will apply since this service is additional and not covered as warranty service.

FCPGA socket, so the CPU is modular/removable. As long as the system's firmware supports the upgrade and you use a good thermal compound, you may be able to do the upgrade. I can't say for sure about the firmware, though.

Unless you're replacing the RAM, match what is currently in the system to better ensure stability.

If you intend on replacing the existing RAM, then you're basically looking for: DDR3L (1.35v) - 1600. The CL/timings don't matter as far as compatibility is concerned, but the lower the number, the faster (not much faster).

I may have missed something in the previous pages, but I was wondering about installing an mSATA in my GP70 2PE Leopard? I saw some who said there was a place to install it, but others who say there isn't a slot. I have looked at it myself and it appears there is a slot for one above (when looking at it from the bottom with the cover off) the wireless card. Is this where it would go? Thanks!

Edit: I got in contact with MSI Support and it appears that the answers for the two main questions are:
    1. The RAM is upgradable to 16GB (2x 8GB DDR3L-1600Mhz) MAXIMUM.
    2. The slot next to the WiFi module IS an mSATA port.
