Many thanks for the quick response!

I will have a look, many thanks.

The ones I have already seen are the Icy Box or the AKASA, but neither are SATA 3 D:

By slot do you mean connector itself, or space to host a MSATA drive? I believe my model will have the connections hidden away, but not so sure on internal space available...

    Commonly seen is this one.
12 7mm SATA 2nd HDD HD Hard Driver Caddy for Universal CD DVD Optical Bay G9 | eBay

Some versions have the connector present and some are simply missing.
You can post a picture of the connector and everyone here can check for you.

Cant seem to find any drives that confirm they are SATA 3 (6Gb/s). I actually have a very old SATA1 version already, but it would be wasteful to use this for SSD. I believe the 1TB drive internally is 7200rpm, so not sure if that would create horrific vibrations / sounds if swapped to the dock.

In terms of the mSATA connector, the question was more around internal space to actually seat a mSATA SSD drive... saw comments previously saying that users who did find the connectors were unsure of where they could actually mount the drive...

Just got this the other day, great laptop, graphics card is great for mid-level gaming, so high settings, but not ultra does the job, excellent for video editing, photoshop and other processor intensive things. Does this laptop have mSATA slots then? Saw posts earlier, some people are saying it has, others are saying something about it not having the screws? Just wanted confirmation from somebody who has installed an mSATA SSD (if the mSATA ports exist). And if not, then 100% confirmation that it can't be done, that way I can convert the optical bay drive to an SSD instead (which is a shame but oh well).

It's not as good as the Dynaudio speakers on the GT series, but it's not bad. I think you'll find the speaker quality better on the GP than your garden variety budget laptop you find demoed in a local retail store.

    Hi guys,
I'm new here and I just got my GP60 2OD laptop for almost 2 weeks. As of now the laptop is great. I found no major problems at all. The only problem I have is the sudden boost in the fan. Even though I didn't use the nVidia graphic card. Is that normal?
Another thing that I'm concern of is recently my laptop will usually go to sleep by itself. Even though in the power plan, I already set it to never go to sleep. But whenever I left it overnight, the next morning i found it already asleep. Is there an extra power setting that I'm not aware of ?
    Need help here~

Click on Advanced of the power plan that you use, then check sleep/hibernate settings in there to make sure.

    Hello,
I am having a problem with display on new notebook. OS is Windows 8.1.
    Scroll down for laptop specs (exact model i bought): MSI GP70-2PEi545FD Gaming Notebook [43,9cm (17.3") Full-HD / i5-4210H / 4GB RAM / 500GB HDD / 840M / FreeDOS] bei notebooksbilliger.de
    Video showing a problem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eQJkF6cS54
These scan lines show occasionally for a few seconds without picture being ghosted and then disappear. After some time it becomes permanent and picture become ghosted as shown on video. It usually happens in games and when it happens it persist when i switch to desktop so i guess both video cards are affected. I have tried several different drivers for both video cards with no success. Changing resolution both in game and on desktop temporary fix the problem.
    Any clues? Thanks.

Can you test it in BIOS mode?
Secondly, go to Device Manager and disable the Nvidia GPU and see how the screen behaves afterward.
Do not disable the Intel HD Graphics at all.

Have you done anything to your system? Such as an OS reinstall?

laptop is brand new and came out of the box with free dos and i installed W8.1.
i could not try any other os as i do not own them.

did some testing and it seems that problem is not showing if the v-sync is on. but i did not test it thoroughly.
it is not problem for me as long as its some kind of driver or software related issue. ill just use v-sync from

the thing that worries me is that it persists do desktop once it happens.

i will try some other options and the one you recommended, i will also get external monitor tonight and test to see if its post processing issue but i highly doubt it.

i also might get a good deal on w7 ultimate 64 bit and try it out. i dont like the feel of w8 anyway.

thanks. ill post my findings later for future reference.

If it's a brand new system then none of this should had happened.
But please go ahead and try to update BIOS and EC firmware, and perhaps reset the OS once just to be sure, and then verify the symptom one last time.
If problem persists, then you can claim DOA exchange with your vendor since a brand new machine should not have such problem.

Just got my GP60 yesterday, bought it through HIDevolution. The camera isn't working at all, windows won't even recognize it's there. Does anyone have this issue? I suspect that HIDevolution forgot to reconnect the cable when they opened it up to add a third wireless antenna.

This is my second MSI laptop. I used the first one for two years then I had to switch to another laptop because one of the hinges broke. I'm afraid that I will face the same issue again with the GP60 because the hinge design is basically the same as the one I had before. I'm very gentle with laptops but the hinges are not practical at all and carry a heavy weight on a small area.

Most MSI notebooks come with the webcam turned off by default. Press Fn + F6 to turn it on.

As Hutsady said, press Fn + F6 to connect the webcam, it will not launch any webcam application so do not expect that.
If you press Fn + F6 again which will disconnect the webcam, therefore make sure it's activated and then you can use Skype to verify it.

No...It is not MXM type like in GT series. None of the new laptops which are not "bulky" can be upgraded.
GE series is also not upgradable.

Only the GT series can do the upgrades, also the upgrades on mobile GPU tend to be costly, $500+.

Hi Guys. I must admit, I did not read through all of your posts on this thread, but I fairly new to this forum, and I am in need of help with my brand new MSI GP60 2PE Leopards. In short: Can you Guys provide me with some optimizations for software etc, so I can get the most out of of my machines in terms of gaming performance? Thanks in advance.

Hey guys, does anyone know of a solution on how to get to the LCD hinges of the GP60-2PE LCD? The hinge on the right side seems to have come loose and now there is some wiggle on the LCD. Any information regarding to this would be much appreciated. Thanks. First time posting btw, Hi all!

Okay so finally took apart the GP60 and sad news, no mSATA port .

One thing that was quite nice is that there is a single dimm for the memory, so tempting to upgrade this if I can find the same module (not sure if it will increase performance much, but I do some video editing on it, so might speed that up a tad when I also have other applications running .

Unable to upgrade the gpu (thanks to other posters here confirming), so only upgrade path I can see is a SSD. Still undecided if I want to put this as a replacement for the current HD; moving this 1TB drive to a cd-rom replacement dock [Route 1], or whether to just install the SSD in the cd-rom replacement dock [Route 2].

Some pros and cons I can think of, if anyone has any advice then would really appreciate:

    Route 1:

    Pros:
    • Know the SSD will run on SATAIII connection
    • Will not need to install an OS on the mechanical HD
    Cons:
    • Slightly more work
    • Concerns that 7200 HD will be noisy in CD-ROM dock

    Route 2:

    Pros:
    • SSD unlikely to be noisy in the dock
    Cons:
    • Have not been able to validate if the connection from mobo to dock will run at same SATAIII speed
    • Difficulty locating a CD-ROM Dock that is defiantly SATAIII
    • Will have to install OS on mechanical drive and boot from use this to use cd-rom drive

Don't go for route 2 since ODD port is mostly SATA II, there's only one ASUS NB which is an exception.

Thanks Kevin, think Route 1 is the way to go then. Has anyone else done this and put the 1TB 7200 HD in a dock? Just concerned with how loud this might possibly be (vibrations, etc).

Maybe swapping for a slower rpm speed drive would be best...

Personally, I would love to have SSD + 7200RPM because of speediness and storage. The price different isn't much yet it's speedier.

Hey guys, I am sorry if my question sounds a little bit stupid, but I am hoping to get a good answer here since a lot of you seem to know a lot more than I do.

I have a Msi GP70 2PE Leopard Laptop. I am really into video edition and 8gb ram is not actually enough for me and I wanted to buy 32 gb of memory Ram. This is how my actual RAM memory and motherboard looks like:
    [IMG] [IMG]

So my questions are: What Memory RAM brand do you recommend me? How do I know if it is compatible with my laptop and not memory RAM for a desktop computer or another type of laptops? Any other comment, tip, etc to add before I buy something?

Thanks in Advance, I really appreciate it!

For Haswell systems, you must use DDR3L (1.35v) memory modules, and it should be 8GB max per slot thus giving up 16GB total.

This model has only 2 slots, total supported amount is 16GB.
So since you already have 8GB right now, you can add one more 8GB to have a total of 16GB.

The BIOS firmware probably had reserved some codes that were not removed which misled the program into thinking that there are 4 slots.
Besides, the hardware design can really do 4 slots if MSI wanted them but since GP series are more like entry level thus why the extra 2 slots were purposely not added.

    Kingston, Adata, Corsair, etc.
Best to match what you currently have, if unavailable then either try to stick to the same brand and same memory type (DDR3L) or then to replace it with a kit with a pair in it.

Any of them is fine. As for Corsair itself, they are just a marketing company so they still have to be using first-tier manufacturer's products.

Hey I am getting repetitive, and I am so sorry for that, thank you very much, but before purchasing I don't want to have any doubts.
I couldn't interpreted what you just said about Corsair, would you mind putting it in other words?
I noticed the Corsair is a DDR3L made some reaserch about that L and heard it was better than the regular DDR3, does my laptop support DDR3L?

I found this RAM memory of 32 GB, and if possible I prefer buying 32GB and forget about it instead of 16GB and regret about it later. This is the one I am talking about: http://www.ebay.com/itm/32GB-2x16GB...=ES_Informática_y_tablets&hash=item58c00b8121
Does my Gp70 support this? Thanks again, I really appreciate it.

    Hello,
Regarding RAM upgrade for MSI GP60 2PE Leopard:
    I purchased 16GB kit (8GBx2) DDR3 PC3-12800 Unbuffered NON-ECC 1.35V 1024Meg x 64
    http://www.crucial.com/ProductDispl...p_category=&parent_category_rn=&storeId=10151
to replace the RAM that came with the laptop
    SK hynix HMT41GS6BFR8A-PB
But when I installed it the BIOS wouldn't boot. fans spinning and power button red, same as if poweredd up with no RAM sticks in slots at all.
I tried combining new RAM sticks with the original, but same issue appears to be persistant.

I created a ticket with MSI support, but I wonder if anyone tried upgrading RAM and what they did to make it work. I thought that maybe CMOS battery needs to be taken out for hard reset, but it is not easy to get to, so i'd rather figure out what the real problem/solution is first.

the only difference in specs between the hynix (PC3-12800s) and crucial (PC3-12800) RAM seems to be the "synchronous" indicator (which I understand is supposed to be still compatible).
which leads me to believe that the RAM I purchased is not working, or there is something I don't get about very detailed specifications of this MS-16GH motherboard.
BIOS doesnt have any settings for RAM configuration.

That's an incorrect memory, you will have to purchase DDR3L 1.35V. That item is still a DDR3 even though it's rated to run off 1.35V.
Additionally, using the compatibility tool which confirmed that the product isn't compatible with GP60.
