i cannot find crysis about the house at the mo, i have a sneeky suspicion i gave it to a friend to test his pc with.... or its in the garage under a lot of boxes, so thats out for now.
I forgot to mention earlier that the ati drivers limit the overdrive to 550 core, 900 memory, which is less than the 650 core freq mentioned as available on the 4870 (desktop version?) by someone above.
The ATI Overdrive autotune feature says, after a shortish non visible stress test, to up the core to 540 and mem to 890... which is not far off full rate.
Overall, even when apparantly maxing out on speed, the fan noise is minimal, and heat lower than what my old HP tx1020eq turion TL-52/Nvidia 6150 based laptop put out, so quite impressed overall.. therefore I can only assume reliability shoul dbe good as we are not stressing thermally.. remember it was hitting 77 degree core at that rate, which is lower than some other guy said his 9800gts? got to - 89 degrees i think
to he who asked, I don't want to waste time doing a battery run down test right now - i want to play around before doing such a long test, vut thanks for the info
BTW, it has no fingerprint reader, which i realise it never said it had, but i assumed it did.
the BR is an Optiarc BD ROM BC-5500S BD reader only (no BR write), so make your own enquiries if you like - i beleive it is not lightscribe, but that is not of great interest to me.
I said in another thread last night that I had tested the BR playback through 1080p projector abnd hdmi switching amp, and it worked great - no stutter, even when opening explorer on laptop screen and surfing, and even when trying to pull IE across into projector display (the BR video overlays everything else, so this is a useless endeavour).
any more specific questions?

-
cutterjohn - the respective temps are the last figure in the triplicate set - so at stock, out of the box, at about 9849, it hits about 60 degrees.
-
Fais, got to Crysis folder, then Bin32 run the test from there.
Should be GPU test and a CPU test, run em both. -
yeah clandestineuk could you find out, what display is exactly used in this notebook? (manufacture and typ)
You should be able to find it out with Everest Software:
http://www.lavalys.com/products/download.php?ps=CE&lang=en
Ah yeah and what HDD is in this laptop? -
Also you guys could try this one http://www.passmark.com/products/pt.htm
as a reference my 6831 scores 450 stock. My desktop scores 1355 ( q6600, 8800gt sli ) -
HDD = WDC WD500BEVT - from what i have briefly read, good performance for the heat/current draw/noise/capacity, mainly due to 2 platters of 250GB each.
for teh everest sw, i am only going to do a trial version - so is it not worth getting the ulimate demo rather than corporate one? -
-
So right now... the 4850 is looking like a 9800m GT. Considering the desktop 4850 ( let me bring to the attention the 800 core architecture is the SAME in the mobile card as the desktop ) the mobile 4850 shouldn't be too much slower. But as you see once the clocks are ramped up, it really shines.
Ok what about using something like Riva tuner to clock the shader clock higher by itself? Might be worth trying, also I found this futuremark comparison chart ( not very accurate but, interesting at the least )
http://service.futuremark.com/hardware/graphics_cards/nvidia_geforce_9800m_gtx -
i am uninstalling and reinsalling it now
i got far cry not crysis brianvp -
Lol yah I just now realized , oopsie =D
-
Use whatever version you like
Ultimate is more complicated i guess. -
So the outside of the laptop ( on the lid ) is plastic? I thought it was supposed to be the same brushed aluminum as on the inside?
Or am I seeing incorrectly on youtube? -
laptop lid appears to be painted brushed metal, or a metalised plastic - still fairly nice. not "plasticy" if you know what i mean.
As for perf test - i get 849.7 without turbo (at 540/890 suggested safe o/c) and 945.8 with turbo. i.e. about a 10% rise.
as an aside, I get 1447.3 on my watercooled Q6600 running at 3.6Ghz, with ATI 3870. -
WOW 945... that's amazing for a laptop. That boosted my opinion of the gt725 even more, once my desktop sells, I'm grabbin the 1900x1200 when I can find one.
1447 on desktop , very nice, I forget what it got at 3.4ghz on air.
Speaking of that, I have an MSI mobo ( 750i ) on my Q6600 I there is a huge FSB hole in the bios, from 1199 to 1500 I can't set any clocks inbetween. So I either run it at 2.7ghz or 3.39-3.43ghz ... which I get stable performance at 1.35-1.4v on the proc.
But I have no idea what that fsb hole is all about.. I really just want to run it at 3.0ghz like I used to with my p35 board. -
i am assume that everest only provides info on components, and does not benchmark as such. It cannot tell the display monitor by name (its still says generic panel), but does provide "manufacturer = 170MT02-G01", and "Monitor ID = SEC4A47". does that help?
-
Does it come packaged with 32-bit Vista? I thought I read somewhere it came with 32-bit, but the search function isnt finding anything now. Should I grab a copy of 64-bit ahead of time so I can do a fresh install right out of the box or should I stick with 32-bit?
-
it comes with vista 32 bit only. I have vista ultimate 64 bit available - is this really worth moving to? if so, how can I extract my key, or is the one on the label correct. i forget if it is or not
although i suppose bitlocker on a laptop is a sensible move, memory freeze attckes nonewithstanding... -
According MSI marketing stuff it's stupposed to be brushed aluminum, as is the wrist rest like on the GX620/MS-1651/GT627. The rest of the case is some type of plastic. (Just wondering or if MSI will go to full aluminum casing or maybe something else, but I'm guessing that they invested enough $$$ in that config that they'll be using it for a while, and maybe swapping in an Al bottom too some day... nice to have the Al on the LCD cover though as it should help protect it a little... also DO USE that little spongey pad that they sent if you do NOT want to EVENTUALLY get marks on the LCD panel... lots of Apple notebooks had problems like that and supplied no protection, so I had to hunt down some on my own... just don't leave it running with the lid closed and the sponge, as the sponge might melt or do something else nasty...)
-
ok guys finaly far cry 2 bench are running result coming soon
what res should i run on ? -
I'd do:
1280x1024
1680x1050
maybe 1280x800 too... I was running most games on the MS1651 when I had it at either 1280x800 or 1280x1024... as no way was it going to handle 1680x1050 adequately...
Oh hey, could you also run HW monitor and record the CPU/system/hdd/GPU temps for the bench too? -
Your max res is all that matters, because that's what we'll be using to compare it against the 9800M GT and GTX.
-
Dang I cant find any 9800m gtx, 8800m gtx benchmarks on far cry 2!!
All I can find is stupid SLI benchmarks
Other than that, this gives somewhat of an idea of what the 9800m gtx does, http://www.anandtech.com/mobile/showdoc.aspx?i=3196&p=5 I mean 8800m gtx is only like 5-10% slower if that.
But not farcry 2, if anyone knows of any sites that benchmark 9800m gtx on farcry 2 post em. -
I disagree the more common resolutions should be tested as well, else why bother with 1280x1025 3DMark06?
IMO the 1680x1050 is only really good to show that it may drive a demanding(GPUwise) app at native resolution. The lower resolutions would be for those wanting to max FPS. [EDIT] or play at a playable frame rate if it can't drive 1680x1050... [/EDIT]
And temps, I just want to see how it handle thermal dissipation under stress. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl would really be better for heat as it's incredibly unoptimized and I seem to get highest system/CPU/GPU temps from running that game.
@brianvp we could ask someone in the G50VT Owner's lounge to bench it... actually there may already be far cry 2 benchs buried in that huge thread anyways... or failing that the 9800M GS overclocking thread in the main ASUS forum... -
Ok I found a good 9800m GTX thread with some scores... check out the SM 3.0 score with the single 9800m GTX... screw overall score, that has nothing to do with it, the SM 3.0... the 4850 beats it... look. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=299286
4850 = 4633 SM 3.0 3dmark06
9800m GTX = 4221 SM 3.0 3dmark06
WOW -
ok here we go have a look guys hope this will help
far cry 2 bmark very high
http://i41.tinypic.com/2nlzllg.jpg
hight res higest quality
and some other -
just a quick question faisalhero. how did u update to catalyst 9.1 did u just use the desktop drivers from the amd site?
-
hmmm... resolution at very high settings didn't seem to make much of a difference...
-
-
-
That powersupply in faisalhero's video look alot like the on ethat comes with the GX620/MS-1651/GT627, as in it looks like the same size.
Battery should've been 9cell, as at least in the US both models ship with 9cell(or will ship whenever they show up...).
Unboxing: You should've pulled the accessory box out first, it has a little handle area to grab and pull. Most nb makers that ship 2 boxes like that put some sort of grip on the accessory box, then it's easy to pull the nb out. I kind of cringed when I saw you turn it upside down like that...
Mouse is nice, hope that we get one in the US too as I could use a new one very badly, but I guess if we don't get one it'll make me actually go out and buy a new one somewhere... probably just newegg it and a spare or 4.
Anyways, back to finish p1 and then onto p2...
[EDIT=p2]
It's Alunminum brushed finish for the LCD portion and the wrist rest, according to MSI marketing material. The bottom part of the case is some sort of plastic, so its the same general case design as GX620/MS-1651/GT627 and likely any newer MSI nbs. Maybe they'll spring for Al bottom section too some day or move onto something else, but I'm kind of the opinion that they likely spent some $$$ just doing what Al they did do and will stick iwht it for a while...
nitpick you uttered "nVidia"
OH! save! Later in p2...
P1 touch button is user programmable to launch whatever app or whatever you want...
[/EDIT] -
maybe wait for a GT727?
I did call MSI UK just now and the guy did say that the GT725 only has the 1680 screen so no point asking for a 1920 one.
maybe anvika can work out a better deal... -
seems pretty awesome to me . though i don't know how a 9800 would perform for far cry 2
-
did u get urs i think they out of stock now. they change the spec now on the web site and also say order upon request. -
-
Those appear to be some pretty good scores for Far Cry 2...
What were the old 3870x2 scores? Those would be fun to see as well as vs the 9800GTX and stuff.
Thx Fais for the benchies! -
pretty good numbers for FC2. Could you try DX10 on Ultra high settings?
-
I just called MSI US sales department and they said that the expected release date for MSI GT725 in US would be March.
-
let me know what u decide to do with it. im still 50-50.
even though its not the 1920 reso, it's still sold out. Thats the power of the HD4850 haha ;D -
If I want to overclock the ATI Mobility HD 4850 to 550 core, 900 memory, what programs do I have to use?
I'm a noob in OC -
one of you guys should oc the ATI Mobility HD 4850 to the Mobility HD 4870 clocks and test 3d06. it could be interesting.

Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
My god !! Awesome information but WOOOOW
25 pages in a day? An NBR record thanks Fasial you lived up to your hype. -
i have to say it was not all Fasial.... others have provided a lot of info for me to act upon too.
-
Good looking lapy, but I expect more power of this
-
-
gddr5- this is very big difference!
-
GDDR5 could be HUGE...
-
here some far cry 2 bmark in ultra high dx10 some1 requesrd these and turbo mode
quick review coming up soon @u tube
http://i40.tinypic.com/n6dzx4.jpg -
The video card in my current laptop packed up earlier this week, and I was kinda hoping the GT725 would ship somewhat sooner than that. -
The 4870 would have to be around the 600+ range... more like the 680, but.. how they would pull that off, dunno. I still dont understand how the desktop 4850 perfoms literally 30-40% under the 4870, having the same shader cores, only difference being clock speed on the core and memory, plus the gddr5.
Makes you wonder...they say the ati shader structure works around clock speeds more than what nvidia does with different shader counts for different models.
To be honest... the 4850 is the midrange card, and the 9800m GTX is the high end of Nvidia. Technically ATI is late here yes, but if you look at the timeline of GPUs... the 4000 series is paralell with the 9800 series on the desktop. So really, give ATI some props for at least keeping up with Nvidia's highest end mobile card with a MIDRANGE make.
So really, the 4870 mobile is the one to actually compare to the 9800m GTX, yet it will most likely be competing against their gtx 200m series.
