o...I thought the MSI GT725 came with Windows Vista 64-bit?

I'm sure after the Catalysis 9.1 driver update and a 64-bit Vista would increase the benches.

CPU will only be "upgrade-able" if the bios can recognize the different CPU. It is possible, as long as the MSI cooling system can keep up with the heat of the other processor.

Hey +rep for the effort, even more so given you did it with company over. I mean heck its one thing to ask people "hey do you mind if I open this package I have been waiting months to get", but to throw on top of it....."do ya mind if I take a video of it by the way".

Classic, and don't worry you did a better job imho than Frosty, just by the sheer lack of "O MY GAWDS"! in your video.

The 3dmark06 were spot on with what was expected as we already had preliminary numbers provided (just check out the other 60+ page thread regarding the 725). The only thing we are lacking at this point is real world hands on experience which you are helping with.

Hit the proverbial nail on the head. WTG Faisal! I keep waiting for the guy who says "Jackass" in Happy Gilmore to jump up on the screen everytime I watch the Frosty Vid! It is one thing to make the video in excitement. It is stupid, however, not to update the video upon learning that the info contained within is incorrect.

With a 2.26Ghz P8400, the stock GTS is more like 8900 or 9000.

    Now you're just assuming that I'm picking on the 4850 because I own a ASUS G50Vt which happens to come be have a 9800M GS. Lets not forget that the provided results of 9437 in 3dmark06 are with a HD 4850 + C2D P9500 @2.5Ghz 6MB L2 while a 9800M GTS + C2D @2.26Ghz P8400 3MB L2 scores from 9300-9500 in 3dmark06.

Well... You could get a MSI GT627 with 1gig 9800GS and put a quad core in it. That would rock those benchmarks I'll bet. Oh, it would also be about 1/2" thinner than your Asus, and lighter.

Months before purchasing my ASUS (being my 3rd ASUS notebook) I was actually considering to buy the MSI GT627 instead, but it took awhile to be released and MSI notebooks aren't easy to find in Canada. :(
I'm happy with what I got though, but I sure would have loved the aluminum finish on that baby.

PS. The MSI GT627 is actually heavier than the ASUS G50Vt.

Perhaps that's the key to 10k.

+1 rep Faisal for staying up all night to benchmark for us everyone.

Shall direct all posts here now? Let's close the other one? Makes it easier to have one thread as a refernce for the GT725.

Anyway, faisal, how's the build quality? I noticed the 9 cell sticking out the back haha

I think i will most probably go ahead with it. I have come to the conclusion that 1680 isn't all that bad.....i did read tons of thread about the resolution difference.

M860TU is sub-$1400, but my comment was only meant for correcting his overstatement of the 9800M GTS performance.

I don't at all care about this notebook, but I'm really hyped about the ATi cards, because I've been able to replace my 9800M GT with one of them if they show up well in gaming benchmarks. But now.... I have to wait until more info is release on Nvidia's mobile G200 series.

right, i have now installed the latest (9.1) ati drivers, and used the catalyst control overdrive feature. and it turned up the following results in 3dmark06:

all done with turbo mode enabled

core 500mhz/ mem 850/ 60 degrees in ati overdrive temp reading = 9849
    525/850/62 = 10114
    550/850/76 = 10352
    550/900/77 = 10491 - about 1000 more than on first go :)

we have our 10k+ laptop people

i am now going to hunt down crysis.... btw, are the necessary tests readily accessable from menus, or do i need command lines - if so, plese let me have the necessary ones. cheers

p.s. microanvika are on the case with msi re: misreprented screen res and are renegoitating the price. they also claim that msi have said the 1920 model will never come in to uk... maybe this is clearing headroom for GT727?

Where did you get that info from? 1300 EUR?! That makes it at least 1450 EUR here in Austria. Goodbye MSI, this is a JOKE.

    I'm waiting for a 1gig VRAM 4850M notebook sub 1200 EUR. F*ck BluRay and Vista x86, I'm going to use XP x64.

    And it is DDR2.

Nice score, but how long will your battery stand turbomode?

I’m torn between the 725-074 and 725-075. What’s the difference between the two? Only screen resolution and dvd/BR player, everything else the same? On 17”, is that really worth the $250 difference? Any recommendations on where to purchase the laptop? I was probably just going to order from Amazon, but I’m open to suggestions. Thanks!

The CPU's are also different. I prefer the P9500 on the 075 model with its slighly higher speed but more importantly double L2 cache size (6mb > 3mb).

The BR thing is total personal choice, however for me with a rather large BR collection and changing over from buying DVDs to buying BRs its a must for mobil movie watching of any of the latest movies I add to my collection. Also with the HDMI out I have the ability to bring HD to anyone. There are times when visting friends/family who own an HD LCD but not a BR player to share in the fun that is BR.

Im not sure about you but with me I don't buy a new computer but once in every great while so I would rather go with more future proofing for a few (relative I know) bucks than be in a position of wanting later (bigger CPU, BR, Screen, etc). If you hold on to a comp for 4years you are talking the difference between a few bucks a month.

Those 9800m gts scores are a bit high, check out the gateway p7811 3dmark06 score from Anandtech. http://www.anandtech.com/mobile/showdoc.aspx?i=3373&p=5 I trust this site more than any other site, the scores they posted for my 6831 are exactly accurate to my 6831.
Now I know the drivers have been updated... but that's my point here... the 4850 might have some room here with drivers.

How are you OCing it? Overdrive? If so, are the clocks it's at the limit for overdrive?

EDIT: have you tested the battery life yet as well?

EDIT2: Those 9800m gts scores do seem high (probably OCed), the 4850 should also have a fair bit of potential since the drivers aren't mature.

Those are pretty good, was the GPU temp 60C throughout all of the tests? (MUCH more important for something like a nb IMO than raw performance.)

MSI may be having trouble sourcing the 1920x1200 LCD panels. The 725s haven't shown up in the US yet AFAIK, anf the 627s seem to be in rather short supply as only the smaller higher priced guys have any in stock, while Amazon continues with pre-order.

    [EDIT]
I haven't bothered with Vista yet, but from what I was reading, I thought that MS allowed a selection of 32 or 64b architecture when installing Vista? MSI only ships with 32b arch support? No way to go 62b if you re-install and select 64b? (Seems kind of silly to ship a 4GB machine with a 32b OS... It's like saying, well this car has a V8, but the engine controller that we supply can only drive 6, so it's more like a V6... but we don't like to talk about that.)

Red trim: has been a concern of mine since looking at retail models v. barebones at least on the ASUS and MSI models that interest me. At least MSI doesn't overload the nb with lots of useless LEDs, and a ridiculous paint job...

GTS scores, not really look at this http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=336013&page=9
overclocked the 9800M GS in the G50VT to GTS clocks... pretty good temps too for an nVidia card. (Seems from my reading that the nVidia cards tend to run a little hotter under load.)

I wonder what the nv 9800M XYZ series would be like if they had the full complement of CUDA processors... instead of half...
