So, for having a 9.4 driver and a 9.2 catalyst, when done and i go to properties, it will say catalyst version 9.2? Or driver version 9.4?

Anyone else having wireless internet problems with this computer? I have never used vista before, so it may be just the OS, but my oh my does this comp have issues! I'm often getting "cannot display webpage" from some pages or all. It will give me the option of diagnosing the problem, but that never helps.

I have often gotten a popup that tells me that there is another connection or another computer connected to this connection, and I will be unable to access the net on here. I just can't pin point the problem here!

I have two other computers connected to my wirless router, both on XP, and they work flawlessly. I hardly ever have connection issues with them.

So my questions are, has anyone had issues with this model, Vista, or any other variance? I'd love to have a stable internet connection on my new computer.

    Thanks!

because the driver needs to be renamed to ATI Mobility Radeon 4850 and not Standard VGA Grafikkarte. once the driver is renamed and re ran..you will be able to post your scores back to orb. and if it you could connect, it still wont show till the driver is renamed

Just as a follow up to my earlier posts. I RMAd my GT725 (in which I had to pay the $50 to them) - got it back about a week later. Sounds great! What a fast turnaround! That's because that's exactly what it was. A turn around. Take it out of the box, power it on, it works! Put it back in the box and send it back!

As I've stated here, I took the Heatsink off and replaced the thermal paste. I also stated in my RMA I did this, they didn't care. When I got it back, I can tell for certain I have the same video card... same thermal paste, same thermal pads and same heatsink. Absolutely no changes whatsoever.

So - if you are looking to buy one of these bad buys, beware. This is a rig and I looked forward to it, but their support is atrocious. I told them I was a highly technical person, but for some reason I guess they thought they could just send it back untouched and not have me notice.

I also asked in email what was done to fix and what the possible problem was (I received an email with an excel spreadsheet showing the specs of my computer, however I know the damn specs... no problem/solution... nothing). My response when I asked? They simply stated the email they sent me was a list of the parts received. Great. Thanks, I am glad you completely ignored my question.

Glad a lot of people here are satisfied with the laptop... wish I could join the club. But that is the last time I will flush $1350 down the tube. Never again. If I don't get a response worth hearing from MSI in the next week, I guess it will be time to chop up the bottom and make a custom cooling solution (aka, no longer much of a laptop).

Where did you buy your gt725 from? Were you able to talk to the seller directly or did they just point you to MSI?

No, the mobility modder do not works for the HD4850!
Here is the list of the supported hardware:

May be that it e.g. with the 9.1 still works, but it's definitely not for newer driver.
I find it strange anyway, because the Modder tool is no longer developed, and KillerSneak (DNA) and so on, released no new driver.
    Muzzle from ATI???
It may also be that I am mistaken.

nope it doesn't. but you can download the 9.4's install using setup. the display driver won't install automagically but you can manually install it by selecting the inf's from device manger to MANUALLY install driver.

    Zergslayer,

I got the laptop from NewEgg, however their return policy is pretty strict for laptops, and you agree to that when you buy it through them. I cannot do a direct RMA through their website, I will have to call them directly for them to "determine if it qualifies" - since I've opened it, I don't know how they'd feel about it, but probably less forgiving than MSI was. I put some Shin Etsu thermal grease on it last night and it drops the temps anywhere from 5-10C; so things are looking up. However - I don't know the most efficient way of applying to the GPU core. I know very well how to do it to C2D processors, but this is a little different. I mainly spread a thin layer over the entire core using a plastic bag and my finger, and then a little dab to the center of the heatsink. I know too little AND too much is bad, so I am hoping I didn't overdo it. Either way, things seem playable. I logged onto L4D this morning (had to redownload it) and played one the more intense maps (Dead Air last scene) and I maxed out arournd 83-85C which is definitely tolerable, but that was only about 20 minutes of playtime. I'm still awaiting a response back from MSI, so we'll see.

Oh well brb going to work.

By the way on the ati overdrive it says my current clocks are 200/250? Stock driver and idle temp at 54*C? Is that normal? just making sure. I already put battery on high performance clock still says current 200/250. Noy doing anything tho.

Just booted up right now, stock driver no oc's on cpu and gpu. Ati overdrive states 40*C then climbs up.

    Current values
    Gpu clock 250mhz
    Memory clock 200mhz

    Checked enable ati overdrive
    500mhz
    850mhz

Just idling, now at 50*C after 20 minutes and while doing my recovery discs.

    Battery high performance.

Are these normal under idle? 50*C you keeding me?

I really wanted to make a new thread to make my question more visible but I will be a good forum user and post in the thread. I currently have a mac book pro 17" unibody and it's a nice machine overall but it's lacking the raw power. Anyways, down to the questions about the gt725:

    1) Is applying AS5 doable for cpu and gpu without dismantling the whole laptop down to the last screw?

    2) Is there a hotspot at the left palmrest? It can get kinda annoying while gaming.

    3) How's the battery life with regular usage? (no gaming of course) Like just surfing the web while typing documents.

    4) Top or bottom? You can interpret it however you like.

Did another test overclock cpu and gpu 580/890 10288 3dmark06 stock driver
Ati overdrive stated 81*C after the test. Comments anyone familiar with temps? What do you guys use too? The built in gpu temp gauge in ati overdrive?

Kindoff just like in idle, right when i start my computer, when everything is loaded up, i bring up ccc then ati overdrive. Off thr bat turnes on its 40*C and as the time goes on, it climbs up to 55 and it idles there 55-57*C. As for comparing, i saw testers or someone onxthe early pages with a screenshot of ati overdrive, i see them having 24*C and 32*c while benching. Im just curious what are other people are getting with temps with their gt725. Thats all. I wish fastial would read this.

This is one of the easiest laptops I have ever done this to. Just a warning though, you do have to take the "WARRANT VOID IF TAMPERED" sticker off one of the 4 screw holes on the bottom of the laptop. However, MSI doens't seem to care about this. All you do is take off those 4 screws, and one large plate comes off. You are now exposed to the TOP of the motherboard; you can see the CPU / Northbridge / Southbridge and GPU right there. The CPU and Northbridge are one heatsink, while the GPU is it's own. You can see this in the pictures of the GT725 taken apart. Then from there you have to take 4 screws out of the single fan, remove the fan. Then unscrew (screws won't come out) the 4 screws on the GPU heatsink and the 4 screws on the CPU/NB heatsink. Then they just slide out easily. From there I recommend cleaning the GPU/CPU with high % rubbing alcohol or arctic silver cleaning kit. Then pickup either some AS5 or better (I know that sounds crazy, but I just picked up some Shin-Etsu X-23 7783D, and it's amazing. I had some AS Ceramique, but it never lowered the temps.

The GPU is located right-center (if looking down at the keyboard), and the CPU is located right-bottom... so no. And no, there's not a hotspot on the right either. One thing they did good was avoid hostpots... however the cooling still blows in my opinion. The large bottom plate that covers the CPU/GPU has breathing holes, however where the *SINGLE* fan intakes air from under the laptop, it's a semi-cirle (why not an entire circle...) AND it has a grill over it (I can understand to limit dust and not have things accidently poke the fan)... but still... in my opinion it's horrible. But that's just me because I am experiencing some realtively high heat issues. Chances are I am going to mod the bottom.

Sorry I can't elaborate on that too much. I don't use it much without the power, but I think it's anywhere from an hour 45mins to 2 and 1/2 hrs depending on what you are doing. I'd say closer to the 2hr mark or a little over, it's pretty efficient for a gaming laptop.

    Top!

    Again, Ran 3dMark06

    Stock/8.56drivers from msi/Stock CPU/GPU Room Temp of 75*F(24*C)

    9308 Ati Overdrive Temp 79*C

    Overclock/ 8.56drivers from msi/Turbo Mode CPU/Overclock GPU 580/890 Room Temp of 75*CF(24*C)

    10288
    ati Overdrive Temp 81*C

    My Cpu

    Core#0 36-39*C
    Core#1 36-39*C

    GPU when Idle is 55-57*C
Im thinking this is normal if some1 can confirm. As I read back 10 pages starting from 160, Silicone has same temps as me but mine is somewhat cooler.

I would post some pictures but I dont knoe how I can save the 3dmark06 scores. Can some1 tell me how to use the printscreen button?

Can people post their temps idle/load?

Im amazed how im only on stock driver, I could already reach 10k+ maybe in a day or 2 ill change to 9.4 or maybe tonight.

I just finished 3DMark06 (1.1.0). I am running 9.4 Drivers with a stock CPU / stock GPU and achieved 9355 points. The highest I saw the GPU temps hit was 81C at the end. In between tests I was seeing 78-80C. I don't feel like OCing right now considering I am just now meeting "normal" temps with expensive thermal paste. But I imagine your temps are normal.

Edit: Forgot to put in the score :p

Hey all. I've gotten pretty frustrated with connection problems associated with the Intel 5100 wifi card. I'm thinking about buying an expresscard wireless card to replace it. My question is, am I going to lose the functionality of the touch sensitive wireless button? How will I turn the card on and off?

at boot my GPU is at 40c cpu is 28 or so
moderate gaming (source, l4d, dungeon runners (fun game) Unreal tournament 2k4) Gpu 60-65c cpu 40c-45c

demanding games Oblivion with everything high 80-85c cpu 50c (It seems post processing really adds to the temp like temporal AA or bloom)

I've never had any problems with the WIFI card. It's been solid as a rock so far. It's not dropped a single time. Have to say I'm even more impressed with the laptop than i thought i would be, especially as my stock benchmarks are at the high end/higher than most of the ones published. Not meaning to brag lol.

I only wish i could get hold of the tv card for it. MSI's response was amazingly helpful "in all hardware stores".. I cant even find anywhere on the internet that sells it. Some retailers reckon they have never been officially released.

Any recommendations for alternative cards? :) This thread rocks! :))

Flashing the bios is for people who REALLY know what they are doing. the bios they are referring too unlocks the overclock limits on the mobile radeon. which means alot more heat beyond MSI's view of 'safe specification' I would avoid it in your case. Especially since you have problems with just getting drivers installed.. messing up flashing your GPU could render it to an unsalvageable state.

    1) kinda yes and no. you can use AS5 on some parts (cpu/gpu) but need ceramique for the northbridge i think i could be wrong a person here tried that and still had thermal issues with a faulty MSI.

    2) mine stays really cool warm spot is upper right corner thats where the vents and heatsinks are huddled together. HD stays cool around 35c so palm rest is just barely above room temp

    3) 1hr 30min but you cannot use 3d mode at all while on battery. this seems to be set by the bios no workaround that i have seen. then again it probably would only last 20min if you could

    4) Depends on mood

Redlance, im not talking about flashing the bios on the gpu lol ill never do that. Im talking about BIOS like the 1.0S at the website. How do i install that?ive done bios before but it was easy because my g50vt has the asus utility flash makes it quick and painless.

You're going to need to make a bootable USB drive, because the flashing process is done through DOS.

You need an application that can make a USB thumb drive bootable, along with DOS system files and the BIOS update files from MSI's website.

Connect the USB drive to the computer and back up whatever is in the USB drive, because the utility program is going to completely wipe it out. Extract the DOS system files to a folder, and start up the HP USB Utility program. You don't need a big thumb drive; something as small as 16MB will work just fine.

-Make sure the program sees the USB drive under Devices.
    -Leave the format as FAT32
-Check the boxes for Quick Format and Create A DOS System Disk.
-The box below the last option will become active. Point it towards the folder containing the DOS files you extracted earlier.
    -Click start.
-Once the program is finished with the formatting, extracted the contents of the MSI BIOS update zip file. It will extract a folder containing three files. Move those three files to the thumb drive.
-Open the thumb drive. It should have nothing else but three files: flash.bat, A1722IMS.10-, and AFU414SD.exe.

-Keep the USB drive connected, reboot the computer.
-When the MSI logo shows up, press F10 to change boot order. Select the USB device. It should boot up the thumb drive, showing the Windows 98 logo momentarily and going to a DOS command prompt.
-Type without quotations "flash.bat" and hit Enter.
-The BIOS update program should begin to read and wipe out the ROM. Leave the computer alone and do not interfere until the program states the flashing process is complete/successful.
