Hey all,
I'm having a problem with blu-ray playback. It has worked for a couple of discs but on both Narnia 2 and The Day the Earth Stood Still I'm having problems. With Narnia just got a black screen and nothing ever happened.. with Earth a message popped up saying I needed to contact my manufacturer for updated software. I'm using the windvd8 that came with the system.
What can I do?
-
-
Either suck it up and try to update it, or buy windvd9 at staples for 40$. But i think windvd sucks.
-
lol, well any programs that don't suck??
-
-
hmmm... I'm using vista 64 as well.
-
anyone having problems playing games? I just got crysis warhead, it was working for a while but now it crashes. I play the game on high settings at 1600x1200 resolution.
-
Hey guys, I've had a GT725-074US for about 3 days now. Just giving some feedback for everyone else that owns / is looking to own one. From reading the posts here, I knew I could pump some more performance by updating the drivers. I wasn't able to see a good guide for the 9.4 drivers, I assume it would be almost exactly the same for the 9.3s. Instead, I pulled an nVidia trick outta the books. I used to have an HP dv9000 with a 8600M GS (yuk), and it was important to that laptop to have signed drivers because of Blu-Ray playback. So, I listened to others, and since the desktop and laptop cards were so similar (mostly just clock speed differences), all you had to do was download the reference driver and use the Have Disk method to force the desktop models driver onto the laptop and it worked like a charm.
I decided to take this approach with the ATI drivers and well, it doesn't work the same. You can force the driver, but getting to load the control panel was a different story, I ended up just using the control panel from the stock driver that the laptop was included with. I've had some mixed results. The good is... well, I can play games at max res (for the 074 it's 1680x1050) and almost always max detail and AF/AA (L4D, TF2, etc). GTA IV and Crysis are different beasts. Anyway, the performance is amazing, however I decided to check the temps.
Not so good. I've seen very different temp stories on this thread. I've seen people talking about (even posting pics sometimes) of idle temps around 50s. Everest picks up 3 different temps for the 4850 (I assume Core, RAM and Shader temps) and HWMonitor picks up one. At idle, I am sitting around high 60s .. which seems a bit excessive. Mind you I am running an Antec laptop cooler on high setting. It's the one which is basically two slot cooling style fans in a small case and is meant to just prop the laptop up and feed it some cool air underneath... the newegg link is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834997396. In games, I am running around mid 80s to upper 80s. Without the cooler, I am looking at mid 90s. This is disturbing. Do I have some defective cooling? Sure as hell seems out of control.
I will mention I also am not OCing the GPU nor using Turbo on the laptop. I am going to revert to the stock drivers that the laptop shipped with to see if it's something to do with forcing desktop drivers on the card. However, in the control panel, it has the PowerMizer options, so I know it detects a mobility card. Anyway, food for thought. Let me know what you think about the temps and the use of forcing a desktop driver. I'm pretty sure the sole difference between the desktop and laptop 4850 is the clock speeds. Take care,
Caz -
I guess I was more or less assuming from other benchmarks I couldn't max it out. When I said maxing out, I meant the highest possible detail / AA/AF. I'm sure I/we can run Crysis at 1680, but running it at max detail and AA/AF is a different story. I havn't bothered loading Crysis just yet as I am trying to figure out this thermal issue. Sorry if I made it sound like I actually loaded Crysis, as I didn't. I have loaded GTA IV though. As we all well know though, it's a CPU limited game due to inefficient porting from console to PC. I threw on Turbo for only a few minutes in that game and it made a difference (I was running it at 1680... highest detail I could, it restricted one setting to medium because their coders in their INFINITE wisdom decided to lock down settings based upon GPU memory)... poor choice if you ask me. There is a paramater to unlock it, but still, you shouldn't have to "hack" the game to unlock settings like that. Anyway, I'll report some findings on the stock driver temps here soon (next couple hrs) to report any significant differences.
-
Temps still the same with the stock drivers... upper 80s during gaming, and even hit low 90s in L4D. Bleh. Looks like I get to to tear it apart it and do some custom thermal modding just to make it last longer than a year. I know mobility products are meant to run at higher temps, but 194+ (F) is nuts, and I don't see it lasting long.
-
what the hell.. are the temps that bad?
or is you're experience the minority?
i plan on wowing it up on this laptop.
is my wrist going to get burnt?
i don't remember seeing that many complaints about temps in this thread or am i remembering wrong? -
-
normal video games temps are 40c cpu 68-70c Gpu (L4D, HL2:2, unreal tournament 2004 and everquest 2)
Demanding games (oblivion is the only beast i own that can make it do this)
45c cpu 85c gpu
I have never gone above 86c ever.. -
no!
My cpu idles at around 55*C and gpu at 68*C.
Bt the turbo mode does nt increase the temp, nor are the fans noisy. -
-
Well, I would say I like having a warranty, but there isn't a laptop that I've owned that I haven't taken apart in a matter of a couple days
. I am going to reapply thermal past to the GPU core and CPU core. I just got done taking off the cover (thus removing the warranty sticker), and can tell the thermal application wasn't too great. Oh well, these things happen. Fortunately I don't care about cleaning the old junk and applying my own stuff.
I have to ask though. I tried to search on this thread and on google... has anyone gotten a straight answer on the changelogs for the BIOS and Firmware? I am curious to as if this might help me. I purchased this laptop through NewEgg, so I don't know know if I have an "older" model with less up to date BIOS / Firmware. The BIOS is "R" instead of "S" listed on MSIs webiste, and I have no idea what the NB Firmware really does, so I am extremely hesitant to flash, especially now that I have taken that sticker off. Any info on those would be great. Guess it's time to order some paste cleaner and quality thermal paste. Ciao!
@iiqae.... the laptop itself is not that hot on the surface (keyboard, etc). And the fans aren't that loud either. The fans not kicking in has me a bit worried, and when I feel the exhaust on the right side of the laptop, it's warm, but not blazing hot or anything. Maybe the BIOS / EC firmware correct some temperature inaccuracies. I am hoping so, but again, waiting for a more professional opinion about those two pieces of software that could potentially leave me stranded with a $1300 deadweight. -
My idle temp for CPU is around 50s C, GPU is around 55 C
Mind you though, different CPU have different TDP
I think for P9500, it is 25W and Q9000 is 45W -
-
the gpu's them self are geared at 98c auto downclock. and if higher than that, they shut the computer off. -
its nice to know such safety mechanisms are in place.
-
Ah... good to hear that the safety mechanisms are in place. I assumed they were, Intel has been doing that on their processors since like... the Pentium II or III. I loaded up Furmark and was still hitting 91C, and now that it's been sitting for around 10 minutes idling, it's only gone down to about 70C (DispIO as reported by Everest). I just looked in my stuff (just got done with a move) and I do have my AS Ceramique on me, so I am going to clean off the GPU and re-apply this bad stuff. Might take a day or two of curing time, but I am hoping it will drop it significantly.
Still awaiting a response from MSI as to the changes the BIOS and EC Firmware make....no one else has any idea? Kinda disappointing.
-
After applying some AS Ceramique (and I've done this many many times), I just hit 102C in Furmark.... I stopped it, I didn't want to see it go any higher. This is rediculous.
-
-
Also if your having problems with the fan, put into sleep mode and wake up, some other guy had problems with this and he just sleep moded it, strange hehe.
-
I've only had it for 4 days now, so no need to blow it out (But I did make sure just in case, there's nothing clogging / blocking the fan). I do have it elevated, and I've tried positioning my cooler in many different configurations, but alas... no luck. Looks like I got a major lemon and am stuck with it since I took the (easily duplicatable) warranty sticker off to take the back off and replace the thermal paste. Maybe my Ceramique is just old and sucks, I have some better stuff on the way.
Sitting here at the desktop, and I am idling 66C GPU / 47C CPU... just disgusting...when I applied the paste, I took the heatsink off to see where it is / isn't making contact, and it appears that the heatsink is pretty warped, it's not even touching two corners of the GPU core. I would say 90% of it is touching, but the other 10% isn't, even with a small amount of thermal paste.
Oh, and I've updated the BIOS and EC firmware (and followed the directions), nothing at all. And now it's sitting at 68C... sigh... just horrible. My luck. Thanks for the help / suggestions guys. -
i would make sure they didn't leave any plastic over your heat sink like they did on the alienware m17's ( a few of them)
and make sure none of your pads are missing or tore up with spaces in them. if your pads are not seated correctly on the north/southbridge, this will cause a rise in temps as well. -
Yeah, I checked it all out thorougly
. The only heat pads are for the Northbridge and the RAM on the GPU, and they all seem to be making contact. The GPU has its own dedicated heatsink though... the CPU and NB share one, and my CPU temps actually seem to be *ok*, not great, but ok... I think I was seeing 65C in L4D, probably still high. But just now I was getting up to 104C while in L4D, and I just quit... doesn't look like I can game on this laptop, at least not for now.
And looking at the cooling solution, I am really surprised that other peoples temps are so cool... if I am not mistaken, both vents (backside of laptop and right side of laptop) are exhausts... so where the hell is it taking in cool air? From that mico sized vent on the bottom? That's just ludicrous. If mine is like everyone else's, I just have this small D with very little pin holes in it on the bottom to take in cold air... pretty sad. Anyway... back to the drawing board. -
65 is fine for playing a game. it can get as high as 80 or so. it's when your cpu is at 90 and above...that's when you start paying serious attention.
but if you feel it should be cool, then send it back before it gets too late to do so. -
Only problem is, I don't know if they will honor the warranty since I took the back off. There is that lame warranty sticker on there... which isn't even on my old HP. So I dunno how they will feel about it, but I guess it's always worth a shot and worst case scenario I pay them to fix the problem, as long as it doesn't involve a whole new GPU
-
yeah...there is that sticker issue....have you talked to tech support yet?
-
Nah, unless there's a number I don't know of, they are only M-F, and since I didn't even start noticing the temps until later Friday, it was too late to call them. I was impatient and wanted to just do a quick fix, but it may end up biting me in the butt. Like I said though, I've got some better thermal paste on the way, and it doesn't have any curing time like the ceramique does, so hopefully it will help. For now I will just game on the desktop while the good stuff comes I guess.
Some companies are cool and don't care too much unless you modify things, while thermal paste isn't exactly modifying much... but I can see if they don't want to honor it. -
put it back the way it was and call them on monday. ask a bunch of questions, then hang up. wait 2 minutes and call back. see who else you get to talk to. see if both techs answers jive together...if so...ship your box of for repair.

Guys a problem here,
My lappy comes with a UK keyboard but during first time booting I mistakenly chose US keyboard.
The effect: Some keys are printed something but print something else on the screen.
Though this is only prominent is special characters like @, " , #.
the top number line is messed up as well as the characters to the left of the alphabets.
Here is my keyboard:
What do I do?
Plz help
Thanks -

Hi GT-Fans
The info is probably a little late, but CPU-Z 1.50 does definitely not to indicate the real Vcore of the cpu!
Please use Everest or Sandra. There is it right!
To undervolting please use rmclock. Unfortunately the 9.5 Multi in rmclock is missing.
CrystalCPUID shows the Vcore also wrong to.
Recommendation:
Yesterday, I have the originals thermal paste of the CPU exchanged.
I used Coollaboratory Liquid (not the pad!).
The temperatures are @ Prime ect. by 8-10 degrees lower than with the original paste.
GT725 interior Pics (sorry but in german lang. only) -
8-10 Degrees lower? thats pretty big.
-
Sorry!!!
Unfortunately, I had made no images with the orig. Thermal paste.
Who likes it, can compare the temperatures with his GT725.
The picture shows the standard clock without Undervolting: (Room Temps. @ ~22°C)
note:
1. = > This is the right setting for the P9500 (TJmax @ 105!!!)
2. = > That is the real Vcore, this is changeable
3. = > CPU-Z does not show the correct Vcore
4. = > Core Temp.
The picture shows the standard clock with Undervolting: (VCore @ 1.000V, Room Temps. @ ~22°C)
The picture shows the standard clock with Undervolting: (VCore @ 0.988V, Room Temps. @ ~23-24°C)
-
Just wondering.
Is there also gonna be a version of the GT725 with 2 harddisks?
Currently the GT725 is still not available in the Netherlands. -
How do you on it?
The GT725 (MS-1722) have only one SATA-Slot. (also no adapter ect.)
...a second HDD would not even fit inside
Perhaps you confuse this with the partitions?! -
No, I don't confuse it with patitions. Too bad 2 harddisks won't be possible.
-
Thanks Sena.
Guys, do we have any way to monitor temps during gaming?
HWMonitor is faulty, it shows lower temps than what they actually are. -
@ Silicon
I use Everest Ultimate. -
I also use Everest Ultimate to monitor the temps. I personally use a second monitor, and I am able to put a nice little (moveable, editable) interface with temps / vcore on my second monitor while I game on my GT725's monitor (or vice-versa).
As for an update... I filed a warrantly claim with MSI yesterday, and in the form it asked if I had modified any hardware/software that they should know of. Me being a person of high integrity, I let them know that I did replace the thermal paste, however I never modified / removed any hardware component. They immediately gave me an RMA and told me to send it backNo questions asked... so I sent it off today, but it won't get there until Monday, I am not rich enough to afford $120+ for overnight shipping lol. Will give everyone an update when it comes back. I still have some Shin-Etsu something or another model thermal paste on its way. It's the one that performed the best in [H]ard|OCPs thermal paste roundup recently. Till then, keep gaming!

hello,
i would like to know if updating my video drivers is as simple as installing the newly released catalyst 9.4..
seems like things are a lot more complicated than i'm making them out to be. editing inf files. huh?
anyhow.. if anyone could go about telling me how im supposed to update my drivers so i can get better gaming performance, id appreciate it very much.
do i download 9.4 and thats it? or do i need to do additional stuff? -
The Catalyst 9.4 drivers and all the downloads on the ATI website is for their desktop video cards. So no, the 9.4 will not work on a mobile card without some tweaking. Thats where the modified inf files come in. They basically make the desktop driver compatible with the mobile card.
-
so is there a modded inf for 9.4 yet?
or do i have to find the 9.3 download and find the modded inf for that? -
okay lol now i'm really confused.
i installed wow on the data drive (d: drive)
now when i try to install the expansion, it automatically tries to put it on C: and of course there's not enough room..
the wow installer wont let me choose the file path so it doesn't detect wow that is already on there.
help a nub? lol. -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-VDAPjL6kY
according to this its possible to run crysis on highest settings at 1680 x 1050 resolution on msi gt725.
how was this done?? i haven't heard of anyone getting even close to these benchmarks with a single mobile gpu. -
Question, has anybody put a quad core in one of these (specifically like a QX9300) and had it work, and what kind of scores does it get?
-
I am also planning a change of the CPU @ QX9300.
It should work @ MS-1722 but absolutely you need the S-BIOS, and the EC4.29!
My biggest sorrow are the temperatures!?
