Just posting some feedback. I just played Crysis 3 for the first time, and man, its awesome! I did a 45 min run, heres some info about that run :

    Min FPS : 31
    Avg FPS : 35
    Max FPS : 59
    GPU temp after 45 min : 66c
    CPU temp after 45 min : 62c

Settings were a mixture of ultra and high. Everything looked so crisp and smooth. Fan boost was off during the run, fan noise was not so audible, but maybe for some users, but definitely not loud. I'm very surprised about the GPU and CPU temps. I was expecting much higher, but I'm glad this was the result. Currently installing a bunch of games, will post results maybe. Definitely happy with my purchase.

Hey guys, has anyone done a test on max battery life for just browsing, etc.? Also, just how bulky is it? I was planning to get the GE60, but the reviews for it have been atrocious so far, thus now I am looking at the GT60.

I also read about one person hitting something in the six hour range with 30% brightness, no mechanical drive. This was light web browsing.

I think the poster was in the GT60-2OD thread.

Can the gt60-2oc 022us put its shipped HDD (primary slot) and an aftermarket ssd (second slot) in raid 0?
Also does it support Intel smart response technology?

Yea if I got 5 hours with max brightness and my 2 drives watching youtube videos and talking on skype that definitely seems possible.

In response to that other guy it is bulky, but imo not too bothersome.

RMAed my GT70. Was getting high temps with repasting, 91 celsius on CPU while playing Fear3, a game not demanding at all. And 87 when doing 3dmark11. GPU temp had been fine, it never went up 80, but the CPU temp just was not normal. But heating was still not the main reason why I had to rma it. A real serious problem was, I got a mouse delay every 3 or 4 minutes when gaming. It seemed the game itself was not lagging, since fps did not drop, and enemies were still acting, and even wsad worked, but just the mouse would lag for 1 or 2 seconds every now and then. I paused the game and switched to desktop, mouse delay still happened. It seemed to me it had something to do with temps, coz the higher the temps, the more frequent the lagging was. It rarely happened when not gaming. I was using win7. I still do not know whether it was because of the hard drive, the temps, the driver, the game itself or something else, because I had not gotten enough time to test more games, neither to remove the hard drive, try win8, etc. My mouse was fine, I am definetly sure about that. Anyone else encountered this problem or by any chance knows why? I thank you in advance.

Edit: I was using stock 750gb hdd and samsung 840 250gb ssd. The game was installed on hdd. Stock WD hdd was making clicking sound, however I heard that it could be fixed by disabling idle3, did not try that though.

You could setup raid 0 that way but would not see any performance gain over the single stock drive.

SSD and HDD together in Raid 0 is not recommended because: Total capacity is equal to the SMALLEST drive in the array and performance is limited by the SLOWEST drive in the array.

Intel smart response technology is supported.

I was reading about the GT60-2OC because an user was considering buying it and asked for my advice. Damm it has such a good price for the specs! It would be definitely my option to go if I couldn't get the 780m :) And with some tweaking I bet it can reach up to stock 680m performance sustained!

Moreover, I noticed that just like GentechPC offered free RAM upgrade with the GT60 2OD, now they are offering for the for 2OC 022US and 024US versions!, so you get free 8GB from them :D I wonder how much they will last hmmm :)

It really does pack a lot in for the price. In fact, even the Asus and Clevo offerings were about $150 more for the same specs. I would have liked to have the 780 for the sizable performance boost, but the price difference would have been about $600. I think that difference would have also included a BD reader and a small mSata drive, but still not compelling enough to go for the upgrade in my case.

    I've pre-ordered a GT70 2OC-055AU :)

    It comes with a 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD.
Does anyone know how much free space the SSD will have? Does MSI put a recovery partition or anything on it?

Yeah! I am recommending it to a lot of my friends precisely for the performance it packs.

The 128GB is formatted for up to 118GB usable and you will have between 60 and 70GB available to use. It's good enough to use as a main driver and install the software you use the most, otherwise use the 1TB drive :)

Yeah this is always an option :)

The cool thing about the msata model is that it has 3 msata slots. If you fill the first drive, you can always add another in RAID or stand alone.

I ordered an GT70-2OC back in early June from XoticPC and got it yesterday. Basic config: Intel i7-4700MQ CPU, nVidia GTX 770M GPU, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD, and Windows 7. I've only had it a day, but so far I generally like it. I don't know why the system shows a warning in Devices and Printers that ends up saying the USB Controller driver isn't installed, and Windows can't fix this problem automatically, but it doesn't seem to be causing any issues right now. Slightly different key layouts from my previous computer are also causing a little trouble -- specifically having PgUp and PgDn on the same keys as Home and End, respectively, as well as the Windows key on the right side -- but I'm sure I'll get used to it eventually. A few of the good points I've noticed so far -- it's a bit quieter than my old computer, it's cooler to the touch (the area left of the touchpad could get really hot on my old one -- on the MSI here it's cold by comparison), and the audio seems pretty good (to my untrained ears, I seemed to be getting more bass and a sort of fuller sound in general). If it's as good as I expect it to be on the games I have, this should be a great computer.

Two things I'm kind of curious about, and feel free to just give me pointers if the info exists elsewhere already, are the ECO modes and TurboBattery+. I'm guessing the ECO modes control power profiles or something like that, attempting to provide the best settings for certain use cases. However, the screen's too bright for my taste in all of them except "off". If they can be customized a bit, they might be useful if other settings are helpful. As for the TurboBattery+ feature, I don't really get it. It seems like it involves saving battery power by changing settings for Bluetooth, wireless, and webcam, but I'm not sure how this works. Cooler Boost is new to me, too, but seems fairly straightforward -- press the button for more cooling power. If anyone could clarify how some of the MSI features like these work, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

    Hi all,

It's been very useful reading everyone's comments on this forum.

I've just got a query about storage. Does it make any difference having a 1TB HD in the Primary HD Slot and a 120SSD in the Secondary HD? I've usually read that people have put the SSD in their Primary HD (but doing that for the GT70-2OC-022 is an extra $150 odd). I'll obviously want the OS to be installed on the SSD.

    Appreciate any response. Cheers.

Uh oh, I think I might have a defective unit.... twice now my screen has gone almost completely dim except for a small area in the lower center. First time I came back from being away for about 30 minutes and the screen saver was on and the screen was super dim everywhere except the center. Restarting it fixed the problem. And just today right in the middle of gaming the whole screen just went very dim again except a small 6inch by 6ich circle in the middle off center. Shutting down the game and rebooting fixed the problem.

Sure hope I don't have to send this back :( Only had it about 2 weeks or so.... I'll be calling Power Notebooks tomorrow to see what they have to say. It's the upgraded screen too, 72% NTSC matte screen.

Is that error associated with a specific device you have connected? Have you updated windows 8 completely by checking windows update.

Info from MSI about the ECO modes:
...............ECO Engine power management system, allowing users to select from five different usage scenarios—text processing, gaming, movie viewing, presentations, and Turbo Battery modes—and instantly obtain optimized settings for screen brightness and sleep, automatic system sleep activation, and processor performance."

Just to be clear, we are talking about two 2.5" drives here, not an msata drive, correct?

If you spec a computer that comes with the 1TB drive only and no msata or 2.5" SSD, you could buy your own 2.5" SSD and put that in which ever slot you like. This may be the cheapest option to get what you want. Most computer's BIOS will all you to select which drive you'd like to boot from. If that gives you trouble, just physically swap the drives inside the machine. From what I've read, these machines are pretty easy to work on. I'll have some first hand experience in the next day or two.

I wouldn't only buy a 2.5" SSD from a reseller for a couple of reasons: 1. You don't feel like doing the drive cloning/installing yourself and do not mind paying extra. 2. The seller is offering the SSD for the same cost that it would be if you were to purchase it on your own.

Thanks for the mode info. As for my USB error, the only devices I've plugged into the computer are a mouse and a printer. Both seem to work, though the printer's giving me problems when I try to set it up as a network device. It always did though, so that's not too surprising to me. The mouse works though, and I think the printer works since I was able to get some sort of test page out of it. Devices and Printers shows an "Unspecified" device called "MSI EPF USB" -- I'm not exactly sure what that is or how it got there. As for software updates, I'm running Windows 7 rather than 8, but yes, I've gotten a bunch of Windows updates, since it had to pull down whatever Microsoft released since the computer was built and for whatever software I installed (e.g., Microsoft Office).

Does the GT60-2oc 022US come with 2 2.5 inch hdd bays? If so can the stock 1tb hdd be used in the primary drive along with a seagate hybrid hdd in the secondary drive?

Also can Raid 0 be enabled on this computer?

They install the OS on the primary drive, but I asked them to put the OS on my SSD instead of my HDD (SSD was secondary) and it costed an extra $20. So see if you can put the HDD primary but still put in a request to install the OS on the SSD

Yeah, I'm definitely having screen issues. Again today the top right corner about the size of a baseball has gone dim right in the middle of gaming. I've never had to RMA a computer before, do they send a box for me to put it in?

I take back all my positive feedback, having to send this back will really sour my first MSI experience.

I called Power Notebooks and they requested I send them a picture of the screen, which I did - just waiting for a response.

    Yes.
As mentioned above, BIOS should give you the option to select which drive you'd like to boot from. If, for some reason that is giving you problems, you can physically swap the drives inside the laptop.

I can't say with 100% certainty since I haven't unboxed my machine yet, but I know there are raid options when using the msata caddy. I would think that this is a bios/chipset function and should work for all drives. I would not RAID to non-identical drives. Especially not a 5400 RPM 1TB and a SSD or faster hybrid drive.

    Hi everyone,

Been a long time lurker on NBR. My Sony Vaio F-series laptop that I got back in December of 2010 is starting to slow down on me and is most likely going to my nephew soon. So, I wanted to replace it with something else. I just got an email from Ken at GentechPC that my GT60-20C-022US shipped yesterday and it should be arriving this Friday. I'm definitely looking forward to this weekend. I had some custom configuration done to my order and got the following:

    • Plextor m5m 256GB mSATA drive for my primary and a 1TB HDD for my secondary
    • 16GB DDR3 1600/PC3 12800 Dual-Channel (8G X 2)
    • IC Diamond 24 Carat Thermal Compound on both CPU/GPU
    • 6X Blu-Ray Read/8X DVDRW Super Multi Combo Drive
    • and a Clean Windows 8 installation
Now I've read that there have been issues with the Killer Wifi cards. I'm hoping my GT60 doesn't have any problems whatsoever. Otherwise, I'll have to change it out. (which wifi card would you recommend?)

Anyway, after this weekend, I hope to have some feedback for you all. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences and have a great July 4th Holiday!

If you keep the "G" button pressed on the touch panel when it boots up it supposedly keeps the CPU overclocked (havent had the need to try it so not sure if true)

Latest update, my screen now has a permanent dim spot in the top right area. Power Notebooks is sending me a new screen and I will attempt to replace it myself without having to send the computer back. I'm a little nervous about that, but the video looked pretty easy.

Rebooting used to fix the issue, not anymore.

On a side note - Power Notebooks customer support is fantastic. If your looking for a company that will really help if you have a problem, without making you feel like an idiot (I'm not very computer savvy which you probably guessed by my other posts), then consider Power Notebooks. They are fast and professional.

I guess this is what I get for going with the upgraded 72% NTSC matte screen :(

Hi everybody. I purchased a mis gt70 065us and ill be getting it by sunday and im pretty excited about it as it will be my first powerful computer ill own. However i have a myriad questions about it as it is almost impossible to stumble upon the user manual of this specific machine haha probably ill figure everything out as soon as i get it , but one thing i would like you guys to tell me is how to add an ssd ? im thinkin about buyin a samsung 840 120gb SSD and install it in one of the 2,5 drives that my computer comes with.
I would aprecciate it if anyone from here could direct me to an upgrade manual or something as i would like to know too where are the ram slots located.(alienware computers have 2 ram slots beneath the keyboard, and i would love not to have to dissamble completely my machine just to get something installed).
I hope someone could clarify my doubts and be sure that ill post some images about the matte screen ill get and ill post some benchmarks too for the ones that are curious about it. This is a great owners lounge.

    Hi guys,

Looking to replace my gaming laptop and after doing some research I pretty much know that I want one of the MSI GT60s (basically this configuration), but I have a few questions before I officially order it.

Right now I'm having trouble deciding whether or not processor and video card upgrades (relative to the computer in the link above) are worth it. Essentially:

Processor: Is an approximately $150 upgrade from an i7-4700MQ to a i7-4800MQ worth it for gaming? Is it worth it for other tasks like streaming or rendering video?
Video Card: Is an approximately $250 upgrade from a GTX 770m to a 780m worth it for gaming or other tasks?

It's not so much a question of budget as it is a question of value - it's more or less within my budget to spend the extra $500 or so dollars for both upgrades, however it's not worth it for me to spend that extra 400 to $500 for, say, a 10% increase in speed.

I've tried doing some research on whether each upgrade is worth it or not, but the internet has given me a lot of conflicting information. For example, most sources have said that the i7-4800MQ isn't really a great improvement over the i7-4700MQ for gaming, but it might make a difference for video processing.

Similarly, on paper, and on a couple of sites, it's been stated that the 780 is a massive upgrade over the 770, but on the other hand several sites have said that the upgrade is barely worth the cost. I'm also getting the impression that the 780 is only worth getting if your processor is at least a i7-4800MQ, but I'm not sure how true this is.

    FWIW, some extra information:
->The computer linked is more or less what I want. The only noteworthy change I'm definitely making would be going to 16 gigs of RAM. I may or may not order from a different manufacturer. I might also order from someone like ibuypower (as I understand it, their computers basically have the exact same internals). Not 100% sure yet.
->I'm new to gaming computers in general. Right now my current computer is basically a business laptop with a graphics card, as opposed to an actual gaming laptop.
->Following from the above, I've never overclocked or anything like that and I'm not sure how that fits into the picture.
->I do plan on using this computer mostly for gaming, but I do plan on working a bit in After Effects and Sony Vegas in addition to doing some 3D modeling (mostly Solidworks).

I think that's about it for now. I'd appreciate any advice or relevant links. Also, I apologize if this is in the wrong place.

    Thanks in advance

Is the gt60 too thick to carry around? I was thinking about buying it soon but in it's pictures the gt60 looked really thick. Someone let me know if it is a problem for them. Thanks in advance.

I don't have mine yet (should arrive by the end of today) but I have gotten some hands-on play time at my local retailer. The front edge of the laptop is fine but the back edge gets thick quite a bit. However, I still don't think it would pose too much of a problem if you plan to take it around with you. The GT70, on the other hand, is a beast. Bottom line, if you can find a place close by to check it out in person, that may help you come to a decision. Also, if you like, as soon as I get mine, I can take some pictures for you, maybe even have it next to my wife's Macbook Pro for comparison/perspective. Let me know...

Is it possible to achieve 6 hours of battery life with the gt60 with brightness at the lowest, power saver mode on, etc.?(Everything lowest or off for minimal battery drain)

What is the battery life for the gt60 when watching a movie or watching YouTube videos?

The news is that my machine is now being built by Xotic.

For anyone wondering how long it might take to go through this process. I didn't order mine exactly stock so I expected to have to wait, especially for the 95% gamut screen. I put my order in on June 10th, I suppose I should be seeing it sometime in a week or so.

I don't believe there are any adjustments to make for hybrid power, it should be automatic. MSI lists it as a feature on all the GT laptops. While a 780m based system can reach 180 watts of power draw, I wonder if a 770m system will reach 180 watts to use the feature. Maybe it's not needed?

    from MSI:
"NOS is the MSI unique feature to use Hybrid Power design................when the system total usage power is over the maximum limitation of 180W adaptor supply, NOS will auto turn on automatically to apply more currents and watts to support GPU to keep the boost work. It could let user get 10% more benefits on benchmarks and gaming performance."
