I am extremely surprised that MSI does use foreign branded components in its laptops which means customization would not effect much but does reseller customization for Ram/HDD require BIOS/Kernel/Electrial changes from them?.
2)I assume the Msata SSD in the GT60 2oc comes with Windows 8 installed, is it possible to move it to the HDD and install Windows 7 in SSD? and How can I do that?
3) Do windows 7/8 have different drivers that need to be found in different sites?I am planning to use Nvidia 3D vision would the downgrade to W7 complicate that?

2: yes you can clone the Windows 8 image to HDD and install Windows 7, however, you might need to change BIOS to UEFI with CSM for Win 7 and UEFI for Win 8 everytime you want to boot to different OS.
3: Most of the drivers for Windows 8 on drivers DVD are compatible with Windows 7 even the nVidia drivers. the only driver you need to download is S-Bar for Win7 and USB 3.0 Drivers from Intel's website. -
Just wanted to say hello to everyone. I have been reading the forums for a couple of months now, and wanted thank all of you for all the information provided. I have been between the Asus g750, Alienware 17, and MSI gt70 for the same couple of months and came back to Notebookreview daily in my research.
I finally ordered the MSI GT70-2OC today along with a Samsung 840 SSD. I just wanted to ask a couple of questions about it before it arrives.
1. Was wondering how the keyboard compares to the Asus G750's. If anyone has experience with both I would appreciate your opinions.
2. Is an immediate repaste recommended even with the 770m? (I have never done this before)
Thanks in advance. -
-
Well, i've just been to the warranty service, my gt70 will be in testing tomorrow, lets hope they'll fix it and i'll be able to play stalker and other fine titles once more
Though now i peobably understand why alienware laptops are pricier. -
My GT60 2OC had a BSOD today, and looking at the dump files it appears the Killer e2200 network driver thing was to do with it. Is there any reliable fix for this? If it's bluescreened not even a week after purchase then it's clearly not stable and I am very annoyed. Why do companies these days insist on not making sure things work. Very disappointed.
Also, the space bar doesn't work properly, pressing the sides of it often results in the button not being pressed despite an audible click. It's not the end of the world as I would normally plug my own keyboard in anyway, it just means that when I have to use the laptop on the go it is a frustrating experience. It's powerful, it runs all my games easily but it does feel like a bit of a botch job at some points. -
I just bought a HDD caddy. Gonna replace the ODD tomorrow. Also, going to buy an SSD, as the last one I ordered got lost in shipping. And WB blue HDD is going to go into the caddy. -
Hello all, MSI GT70-20C user here.
How do I set up matrix display so that I can run dual monitors (laptop screen + monitor) in Battlefield 3?
I've tried going to the Windows screen adjustment settings and setting them to "extend" and I've gone to the Nvidia Control Panel to set up "Multiple Displays" but I can't get it to dual screen. Thank you. -
I tried it on my GT60 and set up the 4 monitors, tried combinations and learned about it. The only GT60 that can handle multidisplay gaming would be the 3K edition, since it is advertised as such and has vga, hdmi and display port mapped to the dGPU.
I had a BSOD caused by my 2200 card too a while ago. Since ownership in June, I have had a total of 1 BSOD. A BSOD is not only caused by a faulty unstable driver. It is also caused a by driver that was unable to cope with what was happening. A combination of software can trigger a chain reaction that causes the device to fail. Expecting software perfection is understandable but difficult to achieve. No company can provide that yet unless you want a very close system that no one can access except the main manufacturer. That's a detriment in general haha.
If you do continously get BSODs though, you do have an issue that needs to be resolved. As far as drivers go, I think there has only been one driver update to the NIC.
An immediate repaste is not necessary, first you need to confirm if you need it. Try some games, check temps and if you are experiencing higher temps than other users, or throttling, it might be worth your while to repaste. Don't worry there are numerous videos and tutorials you can use, and you can take your time, it's not a difficult task -
Ryzeki, thank you for the quick and detailed reply. It's a bummer that it wont work. I guess I'll go buy a better desktop video card. Haha.
-
and yeah it's a bummer. I guess we need to wait for newer models or plain simply build a desktop with a beefier GPU.

is there any heating issue with gt70 or gt 60 with stock thermal settings??? and how about msi customer service in canada?

Guys, I've run into a bit of a problem. I bought a new ssd, put it in and tried turning the laptop on, but for some reason, its not running. So I just took out the new ssd, thinking that it might be faulty, but after doing so too, the laptop wont run. Any suggestions? Im kinda freakin out!
UPDATE : I've managed to get it running all normal now. Only one issue left : the new SSD shows in bios, but not in windows disk management. A quick google search and found that many are having this problem. What do you people think I should do? Apparently, disconnecting the primaty ssd, and booting to the windows setup with the new ssd only, formatting it from there and then, back to primary ssd seems to work. Any suggestions much appreciated!
UPDATE : Finally, I've managed to get the new SSD running. After hours of trying solutions found on the internet, the solution was unpredictably easy. I just swapped places with my primary SSD, and voila! got two ssd running perfectly now. Anyone know the name of the app used to test the SSD speed? crystaldisk was it? -
Hey guys, I have had my GT70 for around 2 days now and have noticed a huge memory leak... after leaving the pc overnight for a utorrent download - I saw it in the morning to see that it had used 8.3 GB / 12 GB ram used, but no program (task manager) had memory usage above 150MB, i used RAMMap to find out what was using so much memory and it turns out its is the Nonpaged pool - that is using nearly 5.8 GB. I am using the nvidia driver version 326.80 btw. Anyone know how to diagnose this furthur? any help would be appreciated

I am still having the ram issue even if I do not use uTorrent... the ram keeps filling up and when restarting the pc, it keeps configuring windows 8 - and the windows modules installer worker is the problem it seems, when i run the sfc /scannow - it crashes the computer after using up all the available ram - on the system log it has problems removing language packs - im really fed up with this issue and want to remove windows 8 and install windows 7 instead - ive already made backups of all my data - only problem now is, what bios settings must i do to install win 7 again - anyone know the procedure to install 7 on a preinstalled win 8 pc..?
UPDATE: Nuked windows 8, and finished the win 7 installation, no ram leaks, all drivers updated, i didnt even mess around with the BIOS - it just worked somehow LOL - awesome -
USPS has me worried, my baby should have arrived by now and their tracking does not work outside the US and there is no way of telling when it has left their realm. 3-5 business days they said...

It's not as secure as the windows 8 mode but is very snappy.

Could you let me how to update the bios and set it up correctly for fast boot? because currently I get MSI LOGO -> SHIFT F10 thingi (bigfoot crap, i set it for 1 second) -> win 7 boot. Im ok with this takes just 12 seconds to boot, but if i can shave off a second here or there why not. -

You can turn of network booting in the advanced tab.

Can you post the new Msi logo

Ultimate frustration with Windows 8, I was born in 91 and as a 22 year old it is unbelievably ironic that I rather than a 60 year old am complaining about Windows 8. I am buying the Msata version of the GT 60 2OC but the SSD will have windows 8 on it and I want to remove it from SSD, put Windows 7 instead and work with Windows 7 while 8 stays as a ghost on the HDD. How do I simply do that? Do I have to switch to UEFI to work or does UEFI only make it faster? And what is the issue with the space bar in the gt60 keyboard as I heard steel series keyboards can never be fixed by anyone including MSI/Steel series?

Hello GT70 20C experts.
I had a GT70 ONC and changed my ram for 2X 8go 1600 cl9 1.35v so i wanted to use my ram on my new sexy GT70 20C. I wanted to change the ram the 2X 4go 1600 CL11 1.35v but i Can't find them, there is 2 free slots under the cooler so I Have added my other ram but i wanted to remove the old ones.
So does someone know where the 2 others ram sticks are? Do you know if I can find a dissasembly guide or something to find the 2 others sticks.
Thanks in advance for your time and expertise. -
The RAM sticks you're looking for are under the keyboard. You have to remove 2 screws on the bottom panel (the ones with a keyboard marking near them). Next with a credit card or other flat but durable plastic remove the touch panel (where you find the touch buttons). Lift it on one side and carefully start lifting all around it. Don't put much force because it's kept in place by some thin plastic clips. Once it's removed be careful as there is a very thin flat cable connecting it to the motherboard. You will find the remaining screws of the keyboard. After that search for 2 black gloss plastic covers. Beneath them you will find the RAM sticks
Oh and here's a link I found for a disassembly manual for the 1762. It's the same for your branded model too.

I haven't faced any spacebar problem with 3 MSI machines I had (GX660R - GT780DX - GT60). I think you are refering to the way the spacebar is pressed. On older models if you pressed it far to the edges sometimes it would not register. That was because the suspension meccanism was placed a bit too much towards the center of the button. It has been fixed since the GX660 days to my knowledge. -
Hello, I just got my msi gt60 today. Should i go to msi website and download the latest driver, firmware or utility and how can i check whether all my drivers are up to date. Sry im a noob.
Thanks anyone who answered. -

The primary concern is the graphics driver which you should get direct from nvidia.
-
-
A few questions to help diagnose it:
What is your current version?
What version are you updating to?
What is your windows version?
I updated from 326.19 to 326.80 under windows 8.1 without any problems (just now). I'll check the performance with Skyrim tomorrow.
Also, you guys should stop basing Windows 8especially if you haven't tried it.
Trust me, I was as sceptic as you were. Just update to 8.1 rtm in oktober (or the preview now) and it's fine to work with (boot to desktop and all aps enabled).
With the new all apps menu it's alsmost like Ubuntu Unity. -
Updating to - 320.49(this is the version nvidia site gave me but unfortunately failed due to unable to find compatible graphics hardware)
Windows version - Win8 6.2.9200 Build 9200
Actually i'm not biased towards Windows8, it's my first time using Win8 and a MSI laptop so i'm sort of getting use to it.
Win 8 is kinda fun though. -
But yeah, Win8 is not made for desktop or laptop use, but it works good enough, and is quite a lot faster.
On your subject; 320.49 didn't work for me either.
I know is 326.19 BETA is stable because I used it for the last month or so, and it'll install properly. And, like I said 326.80 BETA installs as well (no problems so far).
I think the next WHQL certified driver will be released soon because of windows 8.1.
So your choice, if you want to upgrade. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Yes, install the latest beta and make sure its the mobile series you select.
-
One more question, do i need to download the drivers on msi website? -
I'm still on the stock drivers, will upgrade after the Windows 8.1 gets here.
.... umm.. I think I need to repaste the CPU. Temps are getting way higher now after sometime of playing crysis 3. hitting 90c and upward.... This wasnt happening before. I just noticed this recently, that the laptop was running a bit warmer. The GPU temps are fine, hit 77c max on crysis. Is this CPU demanding? Crysis 3? oh well, might as well do the repaste anyway. -
Has anybody been able to overvolt or overclock the 770m past +135mhz?
-
It has FINALLY ARRIVED
I am now a very proud owner of one of these babies.
I have one concern though, can anyone tell me how to install my HDD caddy(replacing the optical drive)? Mine did not come installed and I cant find any videos online that do change it specifically on the MSI. I don't have a drive to put inside it as yet but I would just like to install it so there is not a gaping hole on the side of it. Thanks guys. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
You should have a little l shaped bracket with one or two small screw holes on one side and a single larger thread on the the other, the single large thread is for the large screw going through the casing into the bracket, the two smaller ones should attach to the back of your caddy.

I'm supposed to receive my gt60 2oc today and am wondering how long I should make my first charge. Is there anything else I should remember to do at startup?
-
Now all is running super smooth on WIN 7 64. -
-
How is the stock matte screen on these (just ordered a GT70)?
-
Has anybody had issues getting the computer to go to sleep? It seems to be fine after it just boots up (meaning I can put it to sleep many times without problems), but after a while of being on it seems to randomly not want to sleep. This happens whether I close the lid, use the sleep hotkeys (FN+F12), or use the sleep command in Windows 8. The screen will go black, but the fan will not stop spinning and the keys will remain illuminated, and the computer becomes unresponsive until it is power cycled.
Note that this does not happen all the time, but only occasionally. I'm not sure where the problem would lie... -
Should I charge the laptop overnight. Will it damage the battery? Are you supposed to keep li-ion batteries plugged in as much as possible?
Thanks. -
If you just got the pc - both the gfx and the lan/wlan drivers will surely be old, to check them you can go to the nvidia icon on the taskbar and also the killer icon - they both will lead you to the menu's (a bit of playing around) and you will find the driver versions.
Personally I do not move my laptop around much - I keep it plugged in all the time. The batteries if kept plugged in stop charging after a certain % is reached so that they do not overcharge - this feature is very common with all laptops now. My battery stays at 98% and says not charging. -
